Vulnerabilities in ‘All in One SEO Pack’ WordPress Plugin Put Millions of Sites At Risk

Multiple Serious vulnerabilities have been discovered in the most famous ‘All In One SEO Pack’ plugin for WordPress, that put millions of WordPress websites at risk.
WordPress is easy to setup and use, that’s why large number of people like it. But if you or your company is using ‘All in One SEO Pack’ WordPress plugin to optimize the website ranking in search engines, then you should update your SEO plugin immediately to the latest version of All in One SEO Pack 2.1.6.
Today, All in One SEO Pack plugin team has released an emergency security update that patches two critical privilege escalation vulnerabilities and one cross site scripting (XSS) flaw, discovered by security researchers at Sucuri, a web monitoring and malware clean up service.
More than 73 million websites on the Internet run their websites on the WordPress publishing platform and more than 15 million websites are currently using All in One SEO Pack plugin for search engine optimization.
According to Sucuri, the reported privilege escalation vulnerabilities allow an attacker to add and modify the WordPress website’s meta information, that could harm its search engine ranking negatively.

“In the first case, a logged-in user, without possessing any kind of administrative privileges (like an author of subscriber), could add or modify certain parameters used by the plugin. It includes the post’s SEO title, description and keyword meta tags.” Sucuri said.

Also the reported cross-site scripting vulnerability can be exploited by malicious hackers to execute malicious JavaScript code on an administrator’s control panel. “This means that an attacker could potentially inject any JavaScript code and do things like changing the admin’s account password to leaving some backdoor in your website’s files in order to conduct even more “evil” activities later.” Sucuri blog post said.
Vulnerability in WordPress plugins is the root cause for the majority of WordPress exploitation and this is one of the main tools in the web hackers’ arsenal. The plugin vulnerabilities could be exploited to access sensitive information, deface websites, redirect visitors to any malicious site, or to perform DDoS attacks.

Till now, we haven’t seen any web attacks conducted by exploiting these vulnerabilities in the wild, but WordPress website owners are recommended to update their All in One SEO Pack WordPress plugin to the latest version immediately.

5 Basic Tips to Improve WordPress for SEO and the User Experience

WordPress is one of the most popular content management systems available today. In September 2012, it was reported that WordPress powers 1 in 6 websites.

As someone who codes within WordPress on a daily basis, it’s easy for me to sell WordPress to clients. They are assured that the CMS platform is future proof – at least for the foreseeable future.

However, downloading and installing WordPress isn’t enough to make the site successful for SEO, security, and performance. But the following basic tips will improve your WordPress site for SEO and the user experience.

Although most of you reading this post already have a live WordPress site, this post will begin at the point just after a self-hosted five-minute install.

Remove Some WordPress Defaults

The top item to remove from WordPress sites: the “Hello World” post and “Sample Page”. If the site is still in development, then these elements are OK to have for testing layout and typography. Once the site is live to the public, however, make sure you remove them – you could even delete them from the trash to keep your database a little less cluttered.

Tip: You should rely on better content than the default post and page. If you want to have better sample content you can download the WP Example Content plugin by Josh Ferrara and Jonathan Simmons.

In addition, remember to remove (or change) the default “Uncategorized” category. If you want to keep it, at least create a new category that you know will become the most popular category for you and set it as default. You can do this within the admin area by navigating to Posts -> Categories.

Why this is good for SEO: The sample page and post “Hello World” is less problematic for SEO, but more important to remove for user experience. However, the default category should be a top focus for SEO. Your post is generally not uncategorized, so ensure that you create relevant categories for all your posts.

Set Your Permalinks

The default setting for Permalinks isn’t an efficient URL structure for SEO. Changing the setting to Post Name (/%postname%/) is usually best practice. Some like to use /%category%/%postname%/ as their setting but can cause a few issues when content for categories aren’t optimized (more on that later).

Why this is good for SEO: WordPress’ default setting sets all pages to run via URL parameters, which Google advises against.

Add Some Update Services

When new pages and posts are created it may take some time for that new URL to be indexed by search engines (depending on the site’s crawl rate). To speed this up, WordPress offer the chance for you to add update services within the General Settings page. Ensure these four are in the list:

http://rpc.pingomatic.com/
http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping
http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/pingSubmit?bloglink=http%3A%2F%2www.domain.com/

Why this is good for SEO: Having your site indexed is fundamentally the most important thing for you. If a URL isn’t indexed it will never be shown in any SERP. Not indexing quickly or often enough means your site could miss some big organic search opportunities, especially if your site relies on current affairs or breaking news.

WordPress Homepage: Blog Posts or a Static Page?

Originally, WordPress was a blogging platform. Although still essentially true, now it’s more of a content management system (CMS).

Because its conception was for bloggers, the default setting sets the homepage to output your latest posts. If you want to change this to a static page:

Create a blank page for your latest blog posts.
Go to Settings -> Reading settings.
Choose whether you want latest posts or a static page for Front Page Displays.
For each article in a feed, show the excerpt.
Ensure “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is unticked.

Note: some themes actually use a different method by letting you choose a page template to output blog posts rather than use the default settings. I’m not a fan of this but is something you should be aware of.

Why this is good for SEO: Solving the issues above will help with potential duplicate content and indexation issues.

Customize Media Settings

By default, WordPress provides settings on how to deal with image thumbnails. I’m not a fan of the default settings – I like to set my own dimensions for all three available image sizes (thumbnail, medium and large) per WordPress install; and more importantly I like my thumbnails not to be cropped exactly to the dimensions. I don’t like this as, more often that not, I want to upload images that maintain their proportion when resized.

To change these settings, simply navigate to Settings -> Media and change the settings to how you like to see your site deal with thumbnails.

Tip: Already have a site set up and you’re only now realizing you can do this? Want to automatically change all previous thumbnails? There is a solution. Once you’ve changed the settings as above, you can download the plugin Regenerate Thumbnailsby Viper007Bond that can do this for you.

One more thing I like to do is untick the month/year hierarchy setting. Some larger sites do have a need for this for better organization, but it’s an unessential setting the majority of the time.

Why this is good for SEO: Thumbnails are useful to display an image smaller than full size, which helps bandwidth and performance. As an example you may want to upload an image that is 2,000 x 2,000 px – this size will only be needed for people who want to download the full size version. Here it would be better to set a large size to say 940 px to ensure that it fits on most screens – then simply call that image in the source rather than the larger version. Note that this is different than adding the full size image and then resizing to 70 percent in image settings (as the original 2,000 px image is still called and loaded).

Use Google Analytics

You should never manage a site without some form of tracking. Google Analytics is free and so easy to implement that there’s no excuse not to use it.

Create a new analytics profile, and then install Google Analytics for WordPress by Joost de Valk. This plugin makes it easy for you to connect your profile to WordPress without the need to use copy and paste (and you can also enter the tracking code manually). Once connected, there are numerous settings that you should tweak at your discretion.

Additionally, you should ensure that you enable site search in your analytics profile.

Why this is good for SEO: Having analytics on your site can provide so much useful data and help you complete a number of different tasks such as locating 404 pages, studying how long a visitor browses your site for, and how much traffic you receive from search engines. Incorrect implementation of analytics can cause incorrect data to display. The Google Analytics for WordPress plugin makes it easier for you and adds functionality such as tracking users by username, which is useful for ecommerce sites and ignoring administrators who spend a lot of time in the site and cause anomalous data such as extremely high page views.

Summary

By tweaking some default settings, setting permalinks, adding update services, and customizing media settings – plus installing Google Analytics – you will greatly improve your WordPress site for SEO and the user experience.

How to use Flickr to Drive Traffic to Website?

Images are one of those element of Blogging, if used wisely can be very useful. Specially, if you are one of those who creates own graphics, click pictures and use it on your blog, you can use it for traffic and also for Backlinks. Now, there is something which I have been doing from long time with images, screenshots which I take for my blog post and driving traffic. I’m going to share this dirty little trick which I have been using to drive traffic from Flickr.

Before I talk about Flickr for backlinks and driving traffic from Flickr, let me talk a bit about Images SEO. Images, not only helps your blog post look beautiful but it also helps in driving traffic from image search, if used wisely.

How to use Flickr for Traffic and Backlinks:

Let me start with Flickr traffic part first. We will be using Flickr desktop uploader to speed up the process or you can use their iPhone app or anything else to upload pictures on Flickr in bulk.

Flickr is a high PR site # 9. Getting a backlink from Flickr using your anchor text will be a great way to increase backlink. Though Flickr added a nofollow attribute to all of the external link recently, but you can use it to generate lots of traffic from Flickr and for brand building.

If you have a watermarking tool on desktop, use it to add watermark all the images that you are planning to upload. Usually, I upload images which I own copyright for. Mostly, Images which I take when I travel or images from Bloggers meet or screenshot.

Now, open Flickr uploader and add your images with proper Title, Tags and description. Try to use proper tags on Flickr, as it will make your article more reachable and you will be getting targeted traffic from Flickr. What sense does it make to have a beautiful theme and a killer portfolio that isn’t search engine optimized? Google, Bing, and Yahoo could care less about your pretty photos and web design. They care about things like alt tags, file names, keywords, and hundreds of other really, really boring tech things. Understanding those “boring tech things” might bring you new success. Misunderstanding them could help to put you out of business.

What is Search engine optimization (SEO)?

SEO is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to your website from search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo etc. via “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results in search engines. The theory is that the earlier (or higher) a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and so on.

The following ten tips are those that we think are either often overlooked or common mistakes. This is not a top ten list.

Top 10 simple tips to get noticed by the world wide web:

1. Content is the best optimization. Any type of optimization is effective only in combination with high quality and unique content. Ideally, the text contains keywords that highlights the overall theme of the post. The content should be understandable and readable. Use your keywords wisely. Text should be written primarily for visitors, not for search engines.
2. Exchange backlinks with other relevant websites relating to your topics and with high authority websites (websites with high page ranking). Also link between pages within your website, but do this with caution and only if it’s relevant. Don’t link every page to each other.
3. Think of a good name for your image files. Google also draws images in the calculation of the ranking. Google displays both text and images on it’s search results page, drawing on relevant images contained in the post itself, which are linked to the corresponding page. Implement keywords of a specific subject in your file name, instead of DSC93948.jpg use Tennis-Andre-Agassi-New-York.jpg if you have a picture of Andre Agassi in New York for example. Don’t forget to use the alt tag and title tag for your images, which also provide better usability and optimization for your search ranking.
4. Use short permalinks, including keywords. Use an understandable permalink. Instead of http://yourwebsite.com/page-id?495/ use http://yourwebsite.com/andre-agassi-new-york/. Please note that only the first four words in a permalink are relevant. Google doesn’t care about any succeeding words in your permalinks.
5. Use search engine optimized themes. Some themes use a lot code to create the layout and design. Google will wade through the source code to find the relevant content. The more code you have, the less content and keyword density. Fast performing themes are good for your Google ranking, since the performance of a website is one of two hundred criteria that determine your ranking.
6. Create a sitemap in XML format. With WordPress and plugins like Google XML Sitemaps it is a very easy task. Google has a variety of other useful tools, too, such as Website Optimizer and Webmaster Central.
7. Highlight informative content or keywords on your website. Use h1-h6 to highlight headings or subtitles of an article or important sentences. Use the strong tag, too. But please don’t overdo it!
8. Add your posts to social networks. But please don’t only promote yourself. Promote other posts and websites you like. People will honor your kindness and link back to you.
9. Don’t use black hat techniques or mirror html sites. If you try to trick Google, they will find out. Promise. Recently, some pretty high-profile portfolio sites were recently punished by Google for such practices. Being sneaky will do more harm than good.
10. Don’t use flash. Flash is virtually invisible to search engines. Use WordPress. Period.

Last but not least, don’t try too hard! Concentrate on publishing unique, relevant and quality content. If you do that, everything else will be a cake walk. Content is King!
