If you’re wondering what on earth there is to do in Honolulu on New Year’s Eve, then here’s a full breakdown on this evening’s events.

DINNER:

Grab some grub before the parties and fireworks. Senor Frogs has a special NYE Buffet with live music and dancing for $75. If you’re looking for an enormous meal, Hoku’s at the Kahala Resort will have a 6-course menu with dinner starting at 7:30 p.m. Hoku’s is expensive though; the meal will cost you $185, and make sure you call ahead for reservations #739-8760.

CONCERTS:

The legendary 80’s band, Foreigner, will be playing all its catchy tunes from 10:30 ’til midnight at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. Dinner and concert packages range from $275-400, or if you’re just catching the concert, tickets are $125-250. Call #921-4600 for package deals or #1-877-750-4400 for show-only tickets.

If girly 80’s music is your thing (it’s mine!), head to the Hilton Hawaiian Village to watch The Bangles ring in the new year. They take the stage from 10:45 to midnight. Tickets are more reasonable, ranging from $90-200. Call #550-8457 or visit www.honoluluboxoffice.com to purchase tickets.

There’s some kind of MTV hip-hop party at Pipeline Café, which features Shwayze, Cisco Adler, and DJ Skeet Skeet — none of whom I’ve heard of, and probably none of whom I will know in five years. If you’re interested in going, though, doors open at 9 p.m., and tickets cost $45 or $90. Order tickets online at Ticket Master or call #1-877-750-4400.

CRUISES:

The Navatek I departs from Pier 6 at Aloha Tower at 10:30 p.m. and returns just before 1 a.m. Tickets are $145 or $170. Call #973-1311 for reservations.

Sail aboard the 170 foot Ali’i Kai Catamaran for $40 or $50. The boad leaves at 10:30 p.m. from Pier 5 of Aloha Tower and returns at 1:30 a.m. Visit FireWaterEvents.com for more info.

The Star of Honolulu leaves from Pier 8 at Aloha Tower at 10:45 and comes back at 12:45 a.m. Tickets are $113 and up. Call #983-STAR or visit them online to purchase tickets.

FIREWORKS:

There will be plenty of activity around Waikiki and Aloha Tower and fireworks will be a big part of the festivities at midnight.

PARTIES:

If parties are more your thing, there’s stuff going on Downtown at Next Door (which will finally be re-opening after a long hiatus!), thirtyninehotel and an 80’s music bash at The Loft. In Waikiki, there’s a masquerade ball at The W Honolulu and a “sparkle” themed party at Hula’s Bar and Lei Stand.

I thought the Hawaiian Electric Company was completely incapable when they shut off my apartment’s power last week. Then, just four days later, the island of Oahu went black for a solid 12 hours. Supposedly, ABC Stores in Waikiki and other stores with candles, flashlights, and batteries made tons of money — so much so that people lined the streets just to get through their doors.

We certainly learned a thing or two about how thoroughly screwed we are in times of emergency. But the after-effects of such a crisis are quite intriguing:

Generators were ordered to light up Obama’s compound in Kailua during the blackout. It appears the President-elect was not in the dark for as long as the rest of us.

Reports are showing gas prices dropping at an exponential rate. It’s close to reaching under $2 per gallon!

Finally, just as I was afraid to open my fridge, I guess sashimi is selling at rock-bottom prices to ensure they don’t go bad!

So, if you’re visiting the islands any time soon, make sure you bring a flashlight, drive around as much as you want to take advantage of the gas prices, and head to the closest sushi joint for a good, cheap sashimi dinner!

At the Luxury Travel Awards, earlier this month, Whistler won the Gold List 2009 Award for Best Overseas Ski Resort and a Platinum Award for winning the award for five consecutive years. The Fairmont Chateau Whistler was named Best International Ski Hotel.

“These awards are great news for us as we move into a period of incredible energy and anticipation here at Whistler, the last full season before the 2010 Winter Games arrive,” says Arlene Schieven, spokesperson for Tourism Whistler.

“We have a unique set of tourism products and experiences, and it’s gratifying when our visitors recognize the quality of the experiences we offer. And this year, along with the new PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, our visitors can take in World Cup events showcasing our 2010 Winter Games venues.”

So what’s green about Whistler as a ski destination? Whistler Blackcomb won last year’s Environmentally Responsible Tourism Award at the BC Tourism Awards for its high levels of environmental and social stewardship programs.

For eco-travelers, they can carbon offset their Whistler holiday with the Whistler EcoPath. The online calculator will determine the greenhouse gas emissions of their trips and give them the option to purchase carbon offsets from Offsetters Climate Neutral Society.

Here are a few of Whistler’s environmental initiatives:

Whistler2020 is the community’s shared vision and plan for continued success to the year 2020 and a step on the journey to a sustainable future.
Biodiesel Bus Fleet – In summer 2007, Whistler’s transit bus fleet switched over to B5 biodiesel fuel.
Whistler Green – A ‘green’ building standard and associated checklist has been developed in Whistler, with energy efficiency standing as a cornerstone.
Partners For Climate Protection Program – Whistler was recognized as an environmental leader in the country, as the first community in Canada to have completed the final milestone in the Partners for Climate Protection Program (PCP) developed by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives.

If you’re heading to Whistler this winter, Whistler.com recommends these green travel tips:

“When you leave your hotel room, turn off the AC/heat, lights, TV and radio. Close the drapes.”
“Participate in hotel linen programs, or let the hotel know that it’s not necessary to change your sheets and towels every day.”
“Use public transportation when available. Whistler is a pedestrian-only village, so once you get here, there is no need for your car. Everything is within walking distance, or you can choose to take a short bus ride.”
“Take only the brochures or maps necessary. Return others to the brochure stand.”
“Participate in hotel recycling programs by placing recyclables in appropriate bins.”

For more info about Whistler, check out the resort online.

Happy New Year!

Bars in Scottsdale will celebrate with a huge block party, the W hotel will host a masquerade, the Tempe Improv will do comedy with Frank Caliendo, and Valleywide restaurants and bars have special dinner/dances planned for New Year’s Eve. But what if big crowds getting blitzed doesn’t rock your world? If you like your celebrations to be a little more low key, here are a few alternatives that will help you greet 2009 on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008:

Game night with family or friends: I’ll be heading over to a friend’s house where we’ll play board games till the break of dawn, well, probably not that late–I’ll be lucky to make it to midnight–but you get the picture. Find some friends, gather your favorite games, sport some food and drinks on the kitchen island or countertop, and play the night away. If you’re into video games or Wii, do that, instead. But make it a fun night for all by just spending time together doing something you all really enjoy. Anyone up for some Trivial Pursuit? How about this new game called Partini? I gave a copy away to friends for Christmas. You have to hum, mold clay figures, act out a scene or a word, and make up sentences. Fun stuff.

A movie marathon: Two years ago, my boyfriend and I decided we’d spend the evening at the movie theater catching up on the new releases we never seem to see before they get released on video. It was a quiet blast. We enjoyed an early dinner out before the crowds shuffled in. And then we headed over to a Harkins Theatre to watch a few movies on which we both agreed. We amazed ourselves that we made it to midnight. It was a fun way to say hello to the new year. I’d do it again if asked. Heck, I’d even suggest it again.

The theatre awaits: If tickets are still available, “Let the Sunshine In” with a 40th anniversary production of Hair by Arizona Theatre Company. It shows at the Herberger Theatre in downtown Phoenix on New Year’s Eve. The special production includes dinner. Tickets are priced between $64 and $99. There’s also a special Broadway Tribute show being conducted at The Phoenix Symphony. Tickets for that range from $26 to $76.

Got any other ideas? Post them here.

I have found a place that you absolutely have to try. It’s called Sweet Escapes Eats and Treats. It’s located on 10402 South Kedzie Avenue across 103rd Street. We are talking Gourmet Cupcakes, Gourmet!!!! I think I would probably live there if they would let me. If you have a taste for sweets, you cannot beat it. They specialize in cherry cheesecake flavored cupcakes. In addition, they have children’s parties where the kids can decorate their own cupcakes – how fun is that!!! Mom alert ….great place for a birthday party or a party just because.

If you are not into sweets or maybe not right now, you can try something from the breakfast and lunch menus which include homemade breakfast sandwiches – not the drive thru variety with ham, bacon and eggs. Lunch menu features deli sandwiches which include chicken and tuna salad or roast beef, etc. There is something for everyone there.

Their website features a coupon for bogo free cupcake (for those of you who do not shop, that means buy one get one free). Click here for the coupon

How can you save money on 2009 eco-holidays? responsibletravel.com offers these 3 top tips for booking your holiday next year:

Beat the Euro. – “Destinations like Turkey, Egypt and Croatia are going to be extra popular in the face of an unforgiving Euro exchange rate. How about a week of activities in and around the stunning Croatian islands? Or stay in a cave hotel in Cappadocia for unique holidays in Turkey that you’ll never forget!”

Go off-season. - “Accommodation owners are always keen to welcome guests during their less busy periods and you may find you have an even more unique and personalised experience. Try popular self catering accommodation in Cyprus and save when you go off season. Even avoiding weekends can be a good way to save. Plus in popular destinations you’ll usually feel less rushed and have more time to get to know a place when you shy away from the tourist hordes of the high season.”

Research alternative destinations. – “Visiting somewhere less populated by tourism has many advantages for you and the local people and you are much less likely to be subject to bumped up tourist prices. How about Senegal instead of Kenya? Or Ecuador instead of Brazil? By traveling to less visited countries responsibly you are helping to boost local economies and promote responsible tourism in the areas you visit.”

It is truly an icon here in Atlanta. The painting was completed in 1896 and it depicts the Battle of Atlanta. It was given to the city by George Gress, the founder of the Grant Park Zoo, in 1898. The diorama was added in 1936. This is old Atlanta, but worth your time.

There’s so much hullabaloo and disaster mongering going on about the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama. The list of potential things that “might” happen is getting longer by the day.

If half a million people show up, the infrastructure should be okay, except for major issues such as transportation and dining near the mall. But if a couple million people converge on the Mall, the infrastructure, along with the food service industries will be pushed to their limits.

So here’s a few of the potential “disasters” that might occur due to massive crowds attending the inauguration celebration, and my estimation of how likely it will happen.

Multiple hour waits to get on Metro trains leaving the National Mall — With crowds expected to run at least five times more than a typical July Fourth event, it’s likely that Metro will be overwhelmed, even with 15 hours of consecutive rush-hour scheduling. Likelihood – very high.
Mobile phone service will cease — Due to overwhelmed cell towers around the Mall, especially during the hours just before and after the ceremony, the cellular carriers will likely not be able to handle all of the call traffic. Considering at times all over the Washington, DC area, especially during rush hour, it can be sometimes tough getting a call through, so don’t expect to place a call phone call on the first attempt 3 minutes before Obama takes his oath. Likelihood – medium/high.
Chartered busses might not find parking – With upwards of 10,000 chartered busses potentially bringing people to the inauguration, where are they all to park? So far, potential places include Wolf Trap, JFK Stadium, Hanes Point, and more so parking should not be an issue. Likelihood – low.
Getting people from chartered busses at remote parking areas to the National Mall — Getting upwards of a half a million people to the Mall and then back again quickly will be an issue. So see #1. Likelihood – high.
Grocery stores will run out of staples – With a million-plus people who are not staying in hotels looking for items such as as bread and milk, grocers may run out quickly. While the hint of a snowfall in the area causes some people to rush out and hoard 200 rolls of toilet paper and 40 gallons of milk, I doubt that retailers will miss the opportunity to stock up and make big bucks form our out of town visitors. Likelihood – very low.
Parking at Metro rail station will not accommodate all the cars — With only 60,000 parking spaces spread out over 42 stations, if you don’t get to the Metro very, VERY early, chances are you won’t get a parking spot. Again, see #1. Likelihood – very high.
Getting a meal on the Mall will require an act of Congress — You should be able to find plenty of hot dog vendors around the Mall on inauguration day. But if you want to wait out the exit rush after the ceremony, at a restaurant anywhere near the Mall, expect a multi-hour wait. Likelihood – high.
Restroom facilities will be tough to find – DC does a great job at having enough porta-potties at most major events in the Mall, so this shouldn’t be an issue. Likelihood – low.
Finding a taxi to get to or from the Mall – With all the expected street closures, security checkpoints, rerouted traffic patterns, and the massive crowds all heading to the same place, finding a cab (or for that matter, a cabbie willing to bring his cab anywhere near the expected gridlock on Mall that day) is unlikely. Likelihood – medium.
People will simply grin and bear it — In the crowd that descends on Washington, DC, there will be some complainers who expect a seat on the Metro train, a table at a restaurant just blocks from the Capitol, parking garages to have open spots an hour before the inauguration ceremony and no hassles getting to and from the Mall. But I hope people will just expect the worst and smile when things go well. Likelihood – high.

So what do you think? Will Washington, DC handle the crowds or will it be a tourism nightmare? Make a comment below.

Why not leave the kids playing while you check out the grown-up activities? This summer’s big drawcard is Vaka Moana – Voyages of the Ancestors, an exhibition which celebrates the cultures of our Pacific neighbours. You might even have a chance of luring the children to this one, with the hands-on body tattoo and log drumming workshops. You can also see cultural performances, daily film screenings, and walk the Exhibition Discovery Trail.

Remember to bring your swimmers and your friends to the National Maritime Museum these school holidays!

Dates: Until Sunday 25 January
Times: Wet World is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm, with the last entry at 3:30 pm. The Maritime Museum is open from 9:30 am to 5 pm (and until 6 pm in January)
Location: Australian National Maritime Museum
Address: 2 Murray Street, Darling Harbour
Public transport: Catch a train to Town Hall station and walk across Pyrmont Bridge, take the light rail to Pyrmont Bay station, or the Monorail to Harbourside station

Air New Zealand took one step closer towards carbon neutral growth today. One of its aircraft took off, powered in part by a second-generation biofuel.

The Boeing 747-400 test flight will investigate how the new fuel, made from the Jatropha plant, stands up to use at the high altitudes and extreme operating conditions.

The two-hour flight is another in a series of trials taking place at airlines around the world. These flights are testing different types of biofuel to determine the viability of using the sustainable alternative to the fossil fuel-based Jet-A1 fuel used by commercial aviation.

Paul Steele, the executive director of the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), a representative of aviation industry organisations, said that the flight was a significant step towards the industry vision of carbon neutral growth.

Says Steele: “Earlier this year, the leaders of the aviation industry gathered in Geneva to sign a Declaration on Climate Change, committing the industry to a pathway towards carbon neutral growth.”

“The efforts taking place in New Zealand today and other projects across the aviation sector are designed to make progress towards that goal, providing the aviation industry with a reduced-carbon form of energy and allowing the sustainable future of air transport which is a key generator of economic growth.”

A growing aviation sector produces two percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions. Through technology and operational performance improvements, the sector is reducing the growth in carbon emissions to approximately half the rate of the growth in passengers.

For more information, visit the website www.enviro.aero , a resource centre on aviation’s environmental impact.

If you fancy a bit of razzmatazz for your New Year, this will be the 23rd London Parade – and what a way to go!

Okay, maybe cheerleaders are not your thing. And they’re not mine, though faced with the enthusiasm shown by the girl in the photo, I might have to change my mind a bit!

But the great thing is that this is a very British parade. And that means it will be stuffed full of all kinds of eccentric and offbeat entries, as well as cheerleaders from the UK and US.

Each London Borough is entering, with diverse themes – one promises an undersea adventure with an ecological theme, whatever that might be. There will be the Arapahoe High School Warrior Marching Band.

But the Donkey Breed Society will also be strutting its stuff, presumably with the assistance of four legged friends.

The London Pearly Kings and Queens will be adding a traditional Cockney note to the proceedings. And if you haven’t seen Pearlies before, you’ll be amazed by their outlandish, glittering costumes.

A more rural vision of England is what you prefer? Well you’ll get the Merrydowners Morris, dancing their way from one end of the parade to the other.

Still another facet of traditional British life is shown by the Goldwing Owners Club of Great Britain, with their lovingly tended bikes.

And the parade also, apparently, features Yaksha – the King! A fearsome chappie who comes from the Karnataka tradition of Indian dance. (His web site is a bit out of date though.)

The parade will start at noon from Westminster, and the tail end of the procession will arrive in Green Park at quarter to three in the afternoon. You can watch from anywhere along the route – up Parliament Street, then up Cockspur Street and Pall Mall, turning up Regent Street to Piccadilly, and along Piccadilly to Green Park.

There will be professional commentators at a number of different spots – or you can pick up the free newspaper printed by the organisers so you know who you’re watching.
