Thrifting

I used to be quite the avid thrifter and then, well, time and life and moving somewhere with crappier thrift stores interfered. I mostly thrifted clothes and if I ever turn up my college photos showcasing my 90s uniform of vintage dress-white tights-black mary janes, you guys are in for a treat. In the mean time, I thought I would link up with Mandy (of The Haps) for High on Thrifting Thursday.

Of course, I didn’t go thrifting this week, but as I’m trying to dip my toes back in to blogging with words and things, I’m hoping she’ll make an exception. These are my absolute favorite thing I got at the thrift last year.

Going Forward

We are repairing and rebuilding. I appreciate everyone’s kind words and thoughts. I have no plans to ever discuss details of what happened in this space. The internet never forgets and Spencer never needs to know. Honestly, I hope I block most of it out. Some details are still there and some are already getting fuzzier.

Physically, I am much improved. Apparently I had massive blood loss, received a transfusion and my hemoglobin is on the way up (YAY!) They used those pneumatic cuffs to prevent DVT after surgery, but it looks like I have some issues with my superficial (i.e. minor) leg vein and ended up in the ER this morning. My mom had some pulmonary embolism issues, so better safe than sorry, but everything checked out ok.

I plan on just moving forward with regular content. Week in pictures will be up tomorrow. I may dwell here or there and I have a few choice things I would like to say to fate/the universe/someone but perhaps those things are best left private.

Thanks again for the understanding, sympathy and kind, kind words.

I lost our sweet girls on Tuesday at 21 weeks. I think because of preterm labor. I don’t know. Still processing. My water broke and everything gets blurry. Thanks for everyone’s kind words on twitter and facebook. I’m home from the hospital, my husband is home for the next two weeks and my sister is coming tomorrow. People saying nice things to me makes me cry, so I probably won’t be responding to comments or messages.

Spencer: What’s dat, mama?
Me: It’s a bagel. I’m going to toast it and put cream cheese on it. Do you want one?
Spencer: No, just help you.
Me: I’m putting it in the toaster, it’s too far back for you to help, but you can help me put cream cheese on it. Do you want one?
{toaster reads 3 min left}
Spencer: No. Just help you. Done now?
Me: No, when it says 0:00
{gets out cream cheese, toaster reads 2 min left}
Spencer: What’s that? Done now?
Me: Almost. It will beep.
{toaster beeps and blinks 0:00}
Spencer: Done NOW!
{puts bagel on plate}
Me: Ok. Hold my hand and help me spread it. Do you want one?
Spencer: Spread it, OK!
Me: Ok. Do you want half? I can cut it.
Spencer: No. Just help you eat it.
{grabs full half a bagel, licks it makes a face}
Spencer: Yuckers.
{drops on floor, cream cheese side down. Of course.}

P366: Feb 5th – Feb 11th

We had what is becoming a pretty common week around these parts: doctor appointment, questionable news, spending a week getting a new appointment. A bunch of sitting around and waiting, really. I am not a fan. Spencer watched his first Super Bowl, he liked the Doritos more than the football and Madonna’s half time show sent him in to a toddler rage. Good times. So, here’s some pictures of the vaguely fun things we did to try and keep Spencer entertained and me distracted.

First Purchase

I’m 20 weeks as of yesterday and have yet to make a single purchase for the girls. At first we were waiting until we knew the sex because we weren’t sure what we would need in addition to what we had of Spencer’s baby things. Then we were in twin shock. Earlier this week, we finally found out the sexes (both girls) and I finally bought something.

I know it isn’t much. I still feel like I am waiting for the other shoe to drop and something could be horribly wrong, a nagging feeling I haven’t been able to shake this whole pregnancy. But it is something. I’m invoking the power of positive thinking with six dainty and very girly socks.

A little twinformation

I’ve been trying to update properly on the whole twin pregnancy thing, but we keep getting different information or new surprises at every appointment and then by the time I process that information something else changes and I can’t keep up. I’m frustrated and confused and still trying to find a doctor that is a good fit and they very best medical care for me and my babies. So, here is what I know for now.

I’m pregnant with identical twin girls.

What’s that? A little confused? Don’t worry, I am too. I had been told they were fraternal. Seems like there was a little ultrasound miscommunication.

Here’s the breakdown:

11 weeks: ultrasound in the ER – one baby
12 weeks: no heartbeat via Doppler, no ultrasound
16 weeks +1: no heartbeat via Doppler, ultrasound reveals twins
16 weeks +3: formal ultrasound, tech verbally states: 2 placentas, membrane, probably fraternal
19 weeks: heartbeats via Doppler, no ultrasound, inconclusive AFP/Quad screen, given high risk referral for ultrasound/amnio
20 weeks: high risk ultrasound shows one placenta, identical twins and girls

The high risk OB also stated that I might be showing signs of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), which I don’t recommending googling. It’s pretty scary shit. Needless to say, I spent a few days freaking out. I had my formal ultrasound reviewed and apparently that report states 1 placenta. But, both my husband and i clearly remember her stating 2. My doctor asked my the results, so I said two, but this must mean she never actually read the report??? I’m changing doctors. Obviously.

I’m choosing not to worry about the TTTS yet. This may be naive, but I don’t actually know anything more yet. I am clinging to the hope that the high risk OB wouldn’t have blithely sent me out the door with simply a two week follow-up if something was seriously wrong. He did raise an eyebrow that I was seeing a resident, but that is changing.

I’m working on getting an appointment with the OB I originally saw with Spencer for further evaluation. So. Now we wait. Again. To find out what other crazy news I can find out at my next appointment.

And for those wondering why the one vs. two placenta distinction is important, one placenta is always identical twins, while identical twins can also have two and fraternal twins can only have two. Identical twins are considered slightly higher risk and can have some identical only complications, like TTTS. There are also two types of identical twins and it has to do with a membrane and I am pretty sure both ultrasounds showed a membrane, but I am at the “trust no one” state of this pregnancy.

Spencer seems a little disappointed about sisters, but he is coming around. And he is very excited about babies. We’ve been showing him old pregnancy and newborn photos to get him used to the idea. He is enthralled.

I’ll keep you posted.

Updated: I have an appointment on Monday for a second opinion. Yay! That was not an easy appointment to get.

Wordless Wednesday: A bit of yellow

I live in Southern California; this means I can grow many traditional bulb plants (daffodils, tulips, and the like), but they bloom super early. Every year, without fail, I get the first bloom of the year with in a few days of my Mom’s birthday (Feb. 5th). These two popped up on the 6th and made me smile. Happy Birthday Mom! Miss you!
