New parents understandably have many questions about caring for their newborns. As a pediatrician here are some questions I am frequently asked.

What is SIDS?
SIDS stands for Sudden infant death syndrome. SIDS is the unexplained death of an infant younger than 1 year. The peak age for SIDS is between 2 and 3 months of age. Although the exact cause for SIDS is unknown, there are ways to protect your infant from SIDS (see below).

How can I protect my baby from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)?

To decrease your baby’s risk for SIDS:
* Always put your baby to sleep on his back.
* Your baby should sleep on a firm mattress with a tight fitting sheet.
* Do not put any loose blankets, pillows or other soft items in the crib with your baby
* Use a wearable blanket Such as the HALO® SleepSack™ wearable blanket.
* If you choose to swaddle your infant, use a wearable blanket with built in swaddle instead of a loose blanket
* Do not allow your baby to sleep in bed with you. Your baby should sleep in his own crib or bassinet.
* Do not expose your baby to cigarette smoke.
* Breastfeed your baby if possible.
* Consider using a pacifier as your infant falls asleep during the first year of life. For breastfed infants, pacifier use can be delayed until breastfeeding is will established, usually around 1 month of age.
* Remind grandparents, babysitters and other caregivers of these recommendations.
* Encourage “tummy time” while your infant is awake to help strengthen head, neck and upper body development.

Where is the safest place for my baby to sleep?
The safest place for your baby to sleep is on her back in her own crib or bassinet in the same room as you. Side sleeping is no longer recommended as a young infant can easily flip onto his tummy. Do not allow your baby to fall asleep in your bed, as this is a risk factor for suffocation or SIDS. Make sure that there are no loose blankets, pillows, soft bumpers or other toys in your infant’s sleep space as these can accidentally lead to suffocation or SIDS. In addition, studies show that using a pacifier while your infant falls asleep may decrease your infant’s risk for SIDS. Instead of swaddling your infant with a loose blanket, it is safest to use a wearable blanket with built in swaddle for the younger infants and then begin using a regular wearable blanket when they show signs of rolling over or breaking loose of the swaddle.
