Words are very powerful. We have the power to speak negative and positive into existence. Not just to others but also to ourselves. Our internal conversation has just as much impact, if not more than the words we speak aloud. I have been working on rebranding my wedding design company. It is quite a cumbersome project because it requires me to dig deep and really define my brand and my company's direction. When I feel overwhelmed by something, I tend to procrastinate on it. I think this is a pretty common reaction. Unfortunately, it's also self-defeating. It keeps me from making decent progress on things that are meant to elevate me.

I say things like:

I should be working on rebranding my company right now.
I need to get this done.
I have to get busy if I want to finish this within a reasonable timeframe.

Everytime I had some free time to work on it, I would tell myself these things. This adds to my anxiety and to alleviate the anxiety, I simply avoid the project.

THE CAUSE OF SELF-DEFEATING THOUGHTS

Finally, I stopped and asked myself, "Why am I avoiding working on my rebrand? Don't I want this?"

YES! Yes I wanted it! I realized the hindrance was in the words I was using. Should, Need and Have are words that imply an obligation. It was as if I was bullying myself into focusing on the rebrand.

I immediately changed my internal dialogue and suddenly things started to improve drastically. I started saying:

I want to work on rebranding my company right now.
I want to get this done.
I want to finish this within a reasonable timeframe.

It might seem small to you, but it made a BIG difference. The words I used when thinking about the rebrand project defined my attitude towards it.

A POSITIVE MINDSET

I am determined to eliminate all self-defeating thoughts that hold me back from going for and obtaining my highest dreams. And I ask that you join me.

If you've never sold that top-tier service offering... If you've dreamed of leaving your full-time job to pursue your dreams... If you've ever wanted something but believed you couldn't have it because you don't think someone would hire you or give you the chance... Vision Boards

Oftentimes, we talk about creating inspiration boards for our clients. But what about for yourself. Have you ever considered creating a vision board?

What is a Vision Board?

A vision board is typically a poster board or corkboard on which you paste or collage images that you’ve torn out from various magazines. It’s simple.

The idea behind this is that when you surround yourself with images of who you want to become, what you want to have, where you want to live, or where you want to vacation, your life changes to match those images and those desires.

For instance, I attended an event nearly two years back called Making Things Happen. At that event, I wrote down a list of things I want to see happen in my life and I drew out an "I AM" statement. That statement reads, "I am transforming spaces and minds." Well, I moved forward in my life, taking the path that was laid out n front of me. These words surround me everyday, but to be honest I do not consciously focus on them. They are just there.

Then something cool happened one day. I took the time to review those words. The very things I listed were now happening in my life! My words were like a vision board. Vision boards do the same thing as my lists did. They add clarity to your desires, and feelings to your visions. For instance, at the time I wrote those statements, I knew I wanted to service wedding professionals by helping them grow and expand their businesses. I wanted to help them become whatever their vision as an entrepreneur. Taking the time to write it out made it indelible in my mind.

Types of Vision Boards

I have been thinking about this more and more, sparked by a discussion in a Facebook group that I belong to for wedding pros where everyone shared photos of their workspace. My workspace is incomplete. I have been so busy working on building Backstage Bridal that once I got my desk and chair in there, I just sat down to work and didn't bother to finish what I started. But I want to. Part of my wall gallery will include a vision board.

Here are two vision boards that I came across that I am liking:

Found on Elle Magazine's site, this vision board belongs to top TV producer Ellen Rakeiten. I am fond of it's neatness and her use of binder clips. But I am also swaying towards something more creative such as this:

I love the beautiful mess of it all. This vision board was featured on Refinery 29 as part of a slideshow of Linda Rodin's NYC apartment. Ms. Rodin is the skin care maven for RODIN olio lusso (aka luxury oil) for the skin.

How to Network Effectively

The wedding industry is a unique animal indeed. A pretty, lacy, fluffy and fabulous animal but certainly unique. You absolutely have to be a people person. As a wedding planner, you know that you will need to interact with brides, but what about networking with vendors? When you attend Backstage Bridal Pro Academy, you will have ample opportunity to build key relationships. Doing so plays a huge part in the success of your business and helps you develop a support system of people who can encourage and inspire you along your journey of sustaining a successful wedding planning business.

If you are like most people, you may feel a little self-conscious when attending a networking event. It is not easy to push yourself to approach potential business associates and make connections. Don't panic. Like anything else, networking is a skill that develops over time. Here are a few tips that will help you maximize your networking efforts at the Academy.

Preparation - preparing for a networking event means finding out who is going to be there, who you want to meet, and what you hope to achieve. Join our Backstage Bridal Pro Facebook Group where you can virtually meet who will be there beforehand. Build your confidence by writing down some things you want to share about yourself. Use your camera phone or bring a digital camera so that you can document who you met. Take snapshots of the business cards you collect just in case you misplace them. And don't forget to bring plenty of your own business cards.
Warm Approach - Do you attend functions and timidly hang out against the wall or sit at table waiting for someone to come and talk to you? STOP THAT! Show your confidence by always approaching first. Scary? Sure! But super easy once you get the hang of it! A great tip is to pretend you are hosting the event and you want to make sure everyone is having a good time. Ask things the host would ask - "Are you enjoying yourself?" "Have you made any good connections?" "Have you tried the signature drink?" Don't be afraid to engage in small talk. This approach always makes people feel comfortable.
Have a Giving Spirit - Many times people network to see what they can get out of it, not what they can give to help others. You might think, "But at Backstage Bridal Pro Academy, we are all planners. What can anyone possibly give me? What can I possibly give them?" We all have something to give. Talents that you have, I may not have and vice versa. Networking is a two-way street. Listen intently and determine if there is something you can give to the person you are speaking to. One of the things I am really good at when I network is by learning what someone does or needs and introducing them to other people I think they should connect with. Do I get anything out of it? Sure I do! I gain the respect and gratefulness of the people I connected and that is a major part of relationship building. You never know when that relationship may be key to your future endeavors.
After the Event - Follow up on conversations quickly. A warm interaction gets cold as time passes. Jot down notes on the back of the business cards you collect. "Loves pink just like I do!" "Went to UCLA" "Super cute haircut" "Also does stationery" These notes help you remember people more easily and will assist you when you draft an email to reconnect with the people you met. When you meet hundreds or even dozens of people, it's easy to forget the little tidbits that made your conversation with that person unique. Even if nothing fruitful comes of the relationship immediately, it is important to stay in touch and be friendly. You never know where the relationship can take you both.

Are You Jelly?

Do you ever feel jealous? I have to be honest...sometimes I do.

Yeah. Most of us have areas in our lives that we might feel a little too embarrassed to admit. But I made a promise to all of you that I would be transparent and real with you at all times. And I am here to tell you that I have had the green eyed monster read her ugly head in my life at times.

Jealously is something we all experience and it can actually make you feel pretty darn bad. Not to mention that it does wonders at keeping you unfocused. That is unless you have a new way of looking at this emotion.

What am I talking about? I'll tell you what I am talking about, my love. I'm talking about jealousy being a good thing.

{angry villagers...YIKES!}

Now I know some of you might think I have lost my mind, and that's okay but before you send the angry villagers to come burn down my house, hear me out. There are many good things that this emotion can bring. Jealousy and envy are perfect indicators of the areas where you are holding back in your business and/or life. It points to the precise area where you need to take action or where you need to open your heart to move ahead.

But first let me say that feeling jealous and acting on your jealousy are two different things. When you are jealous and you say and think negative things, you are subconsciously sending yourself a message that success is a bad thing. It's true. Have you every heard of the Law of Attraction? You know the one that says, "like attracts like"? You are putting up a block to your own success by speaking and thinking negatively about anyone who has had more success than you. Especially if you are a driven and ambitious person and you want to have achievements beyond your current level of success.

Next time you find yourself saying or thinking:

"What makes her so great that she can say XYZ?"
"Hmph, he thinks he is so great but I can show you where he isn't."
"Why does she deserve to have success when I am just as good as her."

or other things like this, I want you to stop yourself dead in your tracks. How? By implementing these the three tips below:

Be supportive. Bless them. Cheer them on. You have a choice to either contribute to the negative energy in this world or be a positive force. And remember that like attracts like. So if you want to attract success and want supporters, you will have a greater chance of making it when you yourself are a supportive person.
Remember that jealous feelings bring good news. This is the Universe's way of showing you exactly what you need to do. Instead of bashing the next person, thank them because they are showing you what you need to emphatically pursue.
Stay in your lane. Don't start comparing yourself to others. This puts you in such a negative mind space and it can literally sap your drive and ambition. When you start comparing yourself to others, you are in some ways telling yourself that YOU SUCK. And I am certain that is not the message you want to give yourself. Stay focused on yourself. What are you grateful for? What's working for you? What can you take action on right now?

Sobering Truth: NOBODY Knows What's Going to Work For You!

Before we get into this, I want to preface this post by saying that I'm writing this post from a place of love. I am part of several Facebook group pages specific to the events and wedding industry, creatives in general and a few for women entrepreneurs. Although I find that it can be a great place to vent, to ask questions about issues you may encounter as well as to receive feedback and encouragement, I also see people ask questions about what they group members think they should do to grow their business, what they should name their business, where they should advertise for their business... it goes on and on and on.

Maybe I'm old school because I don't think a business can be built by asking strangers online how YOU should build YOUR unique business. (I assume, you want your business to be unique, right?) Oh and in case you didn't know...those people you enjoy communicating with on Facebook and Twitter...you know, the ones you adore and have a great time socializing with but have never met face to face. Yep, they are strangers. You don't know these people! Don't get me wrong, there are some really genuine people out there. But there are also a whole bunch of people who will give you bad advice and tell you wrong things because they don't want to see you succeed. There are also a bunch of folks out there who take a guess at an answer and because they wax philosophical, it completely comes off as advice you should take.

You learn by failing and getting back up. You learn by attending educational conferences. You can even learn a great deal from mastermind groups and hiring an advisor or linking up with a mentor. But people, please for the love of God, PLEASE STOP ASKING FOR ADVICE ON WHAT WORKS FOR YOUR BUSINESS FROM PEEPS IN SOCIAL MEDIA! For that matter, stop asking your family and friends and colleagues too. WHY? Here is why...

NOBODY knows what's going to work for YOU. Emphasis on NOBODY and YOU.

NOBODY knows what's going to make you happy, successful, wealthy, free.
NOBODY is going to float your boat, rock your world, blow your socks off or free your mind.

NOBODY.

Not your $500 an hour advisor. Not your mentor. Not your mastermind groupies. Not your therapist. Not your BFF for like ever. Not your trainer. Not your psychic. Not your mom or your dad. Not your dog or cat. Not the ghost of your wise but dearly departed great-aunt Violet. And certainly not me.

NOBODY can tell you - with absolute, iron-clad, take it to the bank certainty - how to make your video go viral, how to guarantee that your marketing plan is a starry-eyed success, how to become the most popular wedding professional in your world, or how to get what you desperately want.

NOBODY can predict all of the variables. Determine the way the pendulum will swing. The flux of the market. The mysterious way your brain operates. The variability of your own vigor and commitment.

NOBODY knows how to make you more industrious, more productive, more focused, more efficient, more rarified, more more-ified, more YOU-ified.

NOBODY knows what's going to work for you. Not really. Not completely. Not for all the king's ransom, the moon and stars or all the pearls in the bottom of the ocean. NOBODY. Nope.

All anyone can do is tell you what worked {FOR THEM}, what's proven {FOR OTHERS}, and what's likely {FOR SOME}.

All anyone can do is hold you closer to your best ideas, and say, "If I were you, I'd do it like this."

All anyone can do is ask the inevitable questions that YOU still need to answer.

All anyone can do is bear witness while YOU crack the code, while YOU coax out YOUR brilliance, while YOU finesse out all of the pieces, and frolic into the success that YOU earned.

NOBODY knows what's going to work for you.

Unless, of course, you know someone with the name NOBODY. {In which case they are an awesome and spectacularly wise sage and a divine soothsayer and I'm going to need you to hook a sister up and introduce me to this wonder of wonders!}

So I am sharing my favorite MUST HAVE travel apps because they have not only made traveling more affordable but they have also made my life so much easier when I am trying to navigate new and unusual territory. From booking a flight, to hailing a cab and more, these apps will make traveling to Backstage Bridal Pro Academy a breeze.

Before you travel you’ll need to download a decent weather app so you can plan ahead and pack accordingly. Accuweather is truly the most accurate and it can give you weather information up to 15-day local forecasts as well as 15 hours of hourly forecasts, forecast videos and can store up to 15 locations.

I browsed many 5-star luxury resorts, but once we checked them out on TripAdvisor, we were suddenly aware that the resort website only puts their best foot forward. With thousands of user reviews on TripAdvisor, you get the real deal from the guests who have stayed there and their point of view. You can also review photos that guests have uploaded, and believe me when I tell you, they show you the good, bad and the ugly {stains on carpets, cracked tiles in the bathroom, etc.} Rave reviews and outstanding guest photos are why I chose Terranea Resort. It's an excellent app when booking hotels or searching for things to do.

We want you to enjoy your travels and to arrive here and back home safely and without incident. But let's be real, crap happens at the airport. Your flight is delayed, you miss your connection. First of all, the name of this app is CRACKING ME UP! But besides it's comedic name, SitorSquat app is actually really useful. It may not save you money but it can save you a lot of embarrassment. Finding a restroom on the go, especially if you are in an unfamiliar place and want something 'decent', can be quite challenging! And if you get caught in any kind of crazy traffic congestion on SoCal, trust me you may find that you have to go. There is nothing worse than being stuck on a clogged freeway and trying to figure out where to get off near a safe and well maintained restroom. This app lists over 100,000 toilets around the world and incorporates user reviews and even pics {although this might be a little T.M.I. if you know what I mean}. Still it's a must have and I am extremely glad someone created it!

Say you are not renting a car or hiring a private sedan, you might consider taking a cab. But have you ever had trouble finding a taxi? Lord knows I have. Taxi Magic is an incredibly useful app that helps you find a taxi, book it with a few taps directly through the app {works in 30 cities. In other cities you book through click-and-call} and even track your cabs arrival! LOVE IT!

Hi Myiesha! We are so glad you took the time to chat with us today. If you don't mind, let's jump right in. Tell us a little something about how you entered the wedding industry.

I decided to enter the wedding industry because of the sheer joy that I experience from weddings. The soft music, the beautiful wedding party, the gorgeous Bride and that special look that the Groom shows when he sees his Bride for the first time! My first wedding was for my cousin when I was in college. She told me that I should plan her wedding because I "know how to remain calm, keep everyone focused, and I will make sure that everything is just right." And she was right! :)

I think the name of your company is so adorable. How did you choose it?

Kiss and Tell Weddings says exactly what I want you to do-Kiss your Groom and Tell everyone about your fabulous Wedding! The name is different and it piques your curiosity.

You know, that is so true. Every bride is excited to seal it with a kiss and relive the moments of their wedding afterward. Myiesha, what accomplishment are you most proud of?

Booking my first wedding under my business name. It was scary at first but it turned out to be a huge success!

What are your greatest challenges or fears?

Becoming average. I never want to get to the point where I am just 'going through the motions" meaning that the excitement and butterflies in my stomach goes away. I want to give my all from my very first wedding to my last wedding.

Good point. It's so important to remain passionate and present for your clients and for yourself. Would you mind sharing your favorite wedding photo or item with us?

The picture 'Love at Last' is my favorite wedding picture because the couple is saying 'we did it! Today I really did marry my best friend'

I love the look in their eyes. Myiesha, I know you are relatively new in the industry but we'd love to hear the vision you have for Kiss and Tell Weddings in the next 5 years.

In the next 5 years I see Kiss and Tell Weddings branching out into assorted events (parties, reunions, corporate events, dances, etc). I see my company expanding in services and education.

And of course, we have to close with the golden question...Why did you choose to attend Backstage Bridal Pro Academy?

Honestly, when I officially opened Kiss and Tell Weddings I prayed to God that He show me the direction that I needed to go. I also prayed that He would lead me to other honest wedding professionals who would not mind teaching me the ropes. Professionals who would push me to succeed. I read about Backstage Bridal Pro Academy and it offered everything that I had been asking for. But what really sealed the deal was when I tweeted that I needed help with a wedding question and Lisa actually CALLED me and gave me tons of advice (and this was before the Academy was announced). Today we go Backstage with Jasmine Cianflone, owner and principal planner of This Moment Events in East Windsor, NJ...a little town about 15 minutes outside of Princeton. Jasmine is a wonderfully sweet lady who is making her mark in New Jersey servicing multi- and intercultural brides. She has incredible vision, drive and passion and I know you will absolutely love her just like we do.

Hi Jasmine, thank you for taking the time to chat with us today. We are so excited to hear all about you. So tell us, how long have you been in business?

TME opened its doors officially in July of 2010, so we're coming up on our 2 year anniversary. It's been a great ride so far!

Why did you decide to enter the wedding industry? How did you get your start?

Weddings were an easy choice for me- I get choked up if I even drive past a wedding. I just LOVE them and the possibility they represent. I was that "typical" little girl who has always been obsessed with weddings, entertaining, and parties. I used to make place cards for Thanksgiving dinner and insisted that everyone dress for the occasion, even though my family is the type that likes to stay in pj's and eat all day. Some part of me has always wanted to be a wedding and event planner, although I didn't think of it as a viable career option until I discovered "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?" Yes, I was inspired by a TV show! I'd watch it, and make comments to my then boyfriend (Now husband) about what they could have done better, how I would have done things differently, and why I'd be so good at planning weddings. One day he said "Then why don't you just do that?" And that fateful day in 2004, the idea for This Moment Events was born. I had zero real experience so the idea and the dream sat while I worked a "real job" in corporate America as a software licensing specialist and salesperson for a business to business technology reseller. All the while I was planning events for friends, co-workers, and even at work. Eventually the pull became way too strong, and I started applying for internships. In 2008, I landed one with Curtain Up Events in NYC. I loved every single second of it!! The hours, the pressure, witnessing the quiet moments between families... it was incredible! The owner trusted me so much that I got to run two weddings for her while she was out on maternity leave. I knocked them both out of the park (despite many a snafu) and I knew it was just time to get out there and do it for myself. I noticed a gap in the market in NJ - no planners were focusing specifically on multi- and intercultural couples and weddings, and being in one myself, I figured I'd fill that gap!

I love your vision and your ambition. How did you choose the name This Moment Events?

Honestly I tend to think it chose me. I went back and forth about naming the business after myself, or naming it something like "Amazingly Gorgeous Special Days".. but a string of adjectives just didn't speak to me. To me, weddings and milestone events are about the moments. The stillness in the moment right before the chapel doors open for the bride to make her grand entrance. The moment the nuptial couple's eyes meet across the aisle. The moment they are pronounced married and become a family, really and truly... There are so many of those moments embedded within the day and the planning process itself and I consider it my mission in life to help people take stock of those moments- to stop and be present, because literally, this moment is all we really have.

It really and truly is about the moments in life. Speaking of special moments, what accomplishment are you most proud of?

I think honestly my greatest accomplishments are all the events that I've done. In 2 years I haven't done hundreds, but each one has been unique, special and really enjoyed by the guests of honor. And I am very proud to have played a part in that.

Jasmine, will you share with us your greatest challenges or fears?

My greatest challenge in this business is remembering that it's not a competition. I have a bit of a hard time staying focused on the goal of doing what's right for me and for TME and not losing sight of the goals I've laid out for the little empire I'm growing. I have to remind myself that the race is with me, not every other planner out there. My biggest fear is that I'll somehow fall short or not do someone's story justice. It hasn't happened yet, but I'm constantly upping my game to make sure it never does.

Thank you so much for sharing that with such honesty. I know there are many others that can relate to this fear. Pushing past that fear and moving onto a little wedding eye candy, would you mind sharing with us your favorite wedding photos?

This photo is from my first paid wedding as This Moment Events, and my first full planning client - who just happened to be my sister! She was single for a long time but she met her match and got married for the first time at 47! Our incredible photographer, Kate Connolly of Kate Connolly Weddings put together this shot of the meaning of one of the Adrinka symbols that are featured on the couple's rings. Paired with the bout it just makes a great statement, and showcases a little of my modern, funky, multicultural style.

That is absolutely beautiful. I love the meaning behind the symbol! So Jasmine, where do you see your company going in the next 5 years?

In the next 5 years I see myself running a highly successful planning & design firm, offering full event design services- I'd love to move more into a design role myself or hire a team to do this. I'd love to have a staff of about 3-5 like minded people. I'd like to be maxing out our books at 20 events per year, staying really focused and boutique. I'd like to have a storefront or office space that gives other pros a chance to meet clients, hold events, and generally indulge in all things wedding. I also see myself branching out to pursue some of my other entrepreneurial goals. I'd like to launch my secondary venture of business coaching and branding services for micro- and mom-owned businesses.

And last but not least, why did you choose to attend Backstage Bridal Pro Academy?

I chose to attend Backstage Bridal Pro Academy because I am all about continuing education. I'm still pretty fresh to this whole business owner thing, and I'm always looking for ways to grow and improve my skill set. There is always something new to learn, and the lineup for BBPro is second to none. Industry leaders are packed in there. And I know I'll get an incredible experience along with my education. I'm also very excited for something NEW that isn't the same old convention- I know this will go deeper than planning 101, and I can't wait to get in there!

Transitioning From Your Day Job to Your Wedding Business

Many of us dream of the day we can kiss our day jobs goodbye and work in our businesses full time. Our reasons vary from taking control of our lives and managing our own time to enjoying our work and even being more available to our families and friends.

Day jobs provide a few securities. They fund our businesses as we build them and they sometimes come with health benefits, paid vacation time and birthday cake in the board room. But they oftentimes don't fulfill us as creative, independent entrepreneurs.

Transitioning from "day jobs" can sometimes take years. Making the leap from "working for THE MAN" to living your dream can often seem impossible and daunting.

So how, exactly, do you make the transition? Certainly we don't just up and quit our day jobs without a plan. Today I will share three steps to help you make the switch from being a cog in the wheel to owning and operating the entire machine.

PLEASE NOTE: These three steps are not the only way to do it. There are certainly other methods to transition and a variety of variables to consider. But they will get your mind in the mode to take steps in the right direction.

Shall we proceed? YES! Let's...

1. FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR DAY JOB.
"WHAT!" you say. Mmm hmm, you heard me right. I share this with you based on personal experience. How you behave at your current job speaks volumes about how you approach your own business. Allow me to explain. Are you paying attention, because this is so important to keeping your energy high and remaining positive spirits when you get home at night. Your mood throughout the day will provide you the fuel for the evening, whether that fuel is pure clean oil or sludgy thick oil. I'm pretty sure you want to always be excited about your business and ready to dig in when you leave your day job. It's the pep in your step and the zig to your zag. You can't spend eight hours at work in a miserable, crummy funk and think you'll be fired up for your passion when you get home. So commit to love being there during the time you're there and remember it's simply a means to an end, not a permanent situation.

It's like Oprah says, "I know for sure that what we dwell on is who we become."

2. BUILD A FINANCIAL CUSHION.
I kind of feel like I shouldn't have to tell you this but I'll do it anyway because there are people who haven't given much thought to how they will pay for their lives and their business until things are really taking off. Next you will also need to take time to evaluate your approach to your business. Ask yourself and map out:

What is your business model?

What are you selling?

Who are your ideal clients?

What exact problems are you solving for them?

3. VALIDATE YOUR IDEA
This means telling talking to real people. I'm not talking about asking your Facebook friends or Tweeting your inquires. And I definitely don't mean asking your friends or family members. They are biased. If you do any of those things, you are not making the best decisions for your business. I need each ofnyounto go out and meet those that are your target market. Give them a chance to see your smiling face. Allow them to get to know the real you, see your passion and relate to you. Find out what frustrates them. Talk to them about the exact problems that you want to help them solve. Ask if they'd pay for your ideas. This helps you determine if you have a viable idea. After speaking to a bunch of people in your target market, you'll know whether your idea is on track. If it is, you can start making offers and launch your business.

There a many more methods that will help you transition for your day job to your dream career but these three will certainly kickstart your move.

Hard Work and Ramen Noodles

Are you working your fingers to the bone? Are you burning the midnight oil and the daytime gas? Are you pouring blood, sweat and tears all of your work and still finding your bank account dry as a bone?

No need to feel alone or ashamed! I've been there and lived that. Trust me, I've seen my fair share of rough times. During these times, I was stressed the freak out! And to make matters worse, my cell was on the verge of disconnection, my rent was severely delinquent and my cabinets...let's just say we found creative many ways to jazz up a package of Top Ramen that wouldn't probably warrant a cookbook!

It's hell when you have loads of passion with little profit. My friends and family thought I was avoiding work. How insulting! I work harder and put in longer hours in my own business than I ever did working for "The Man"! I am passionate, hard working, willing to put in long hours and I love what I do. But I was in the poor house. It was time to understand why in Sam Hill I didn't have any money.

You see, when anyone says, "I work so much and I'm still broke", it's more than likely that at least one of three issues are at the root cause:

1. Spending Beyond Your Means
2. Not Charging Appropriately For Your Products or Services
3. Poor Time Management

Now, don't feel disheartened. There is hope, my love. Let's break it down and fix this issue now do you can be the business owner you really want to be.

Spending Beyond Your Means
I don't want to get to deep in this subject. The bottom line is, if you overspend, you're not alone but you're also not growing. I shared a personal story about a time I was overspending in business in a post a year ago. You should READ IT before we continue our discussion. I know you'll be able to relate.

Not Charging Appropriately
Setting prices seems to be such a huge mystery to many of us in the wedding industry. We do silly things like price our products and services by copying what someone else is doing or by mystery calling and pretending to be a bride (or a groom, as I recently heard someone share). However, there is a better way to go about this.

Figure out the actual time you spend on your client. This includes responding to emails, driving to appointments, taking and making calls, conducting online research, productions and assembly, etc. You need to charge your clients for ALL the time you spend working for them. If you divide your pricing by the actual hours you spend on their wedding or event, and you find that you have an incredibly low hourly rate, then it's high time to adjust your prices.

If you are looking for a great way to track your time on a project, I highly recommend Harvest.

Poor Time Management
How much time do you spend on unprofitable activities? If you were managing paid opportunities throughout you day, you'd be benefitting financially. So, what's really going on?

I challenge you to accurately record your time for a week. Don't change your actions, just document. No one has to see this, so by fudging, you'll only be lying to and cheating yourself. Be sure to write down the revenue you're bringing in for that activity.

I would bet $1Million that you're wasting ridiculous amounts of time and bringing in $0 for your business!

Follow my advice, implement even the smallest changes and you will start to see a positive difference to your bottom line. I promise.

Your Wedding Business: Negative Reviews

Today I'm composing the outline for my Welcome Session for Backstage Bridal Pro Adademy. I'm so hype to speak to everyone in person, I can hardly stand it! And I'm even more excited to learn and build deeper relationships with all of you that I've met online.

But then I suddenly felt nervous! Why? Because what if you hate me? What if my topic isn't interesting to you? And the worst fear of all...what if I receive negative reviews!?! AHHH!

So this brought me to the topic of dealing with negative reviews. I did a little brainstorming about how I would deal with negative reviews and thought I'd share with you.

Receiving negative reviews can be one of THE most upsetting situations you'll run into as a business owner. No matter how great your products or services are, there will be people who are simply unhappy with their purchase.

When those unhappy clients leave negative reviews about your business online, it can do real damage to your confidence, reputation and revenue - unless you know how to deal with it.

As you know, you can't erase negative reviews, but you an handle the criticism with smart strategy. And get this...

You can even make negative reviews good for your business! {TWEET THIS}

No company or even person is perfect. Therefore, negative reviews are something we may all have to deal with at some point or another. Negative reviews are actually feedback from your clients that you should deal treat as golden. It's an opportunity to learn how to improve your business. Depending on how you respond, it's an opportunity to show what you're made of.

Here are THREE steps to help you deal with negative reviews:

1. Thank the reviewer and apologize. This means thanking them for taking the time to leave a review and genuinely apologize. Take responsibility for any mistakes. DO NOT be defensive. Why is this important? When people see negative reviews they will also see your thoughtful response. This is critical in turning a frown upside down. Take the high road.

2. Explain exactly what you are doing to fix the problem. You can share new policies, new technologies or additions to your staff. Whatever's it is, the point is to show specific details and what you are going to do to ensure this never happens again.

3. Make it right! Give the reviewer an email address or phone number with a chance to contact you offline. Making it right can mean giving a full refund or giving them an opportunity to experience your service or products again with a discount. You need to refocus your energy on positive responses to feedback such as this.

Meet the talented and adorable Danielle Pasternak, owner of Danielle Pasternak, Wedding Coordinator. Danielle is located in the northeast region of Pennsylvania, specifically Scranton, which happens to also be the home of The Office! We asked Danielle a few questions about being in the wedding industry. Here is what she had to say...

Danielle, how long have you been in business?
Research and development began in the late stages of 2009 and my first wedding was in March of 2010.

Why did you decide to enter the wedding industry? How did you get your start?
My history includes a lot of dance, theater and production. I experienced an ankle injury during a rehearsal and knew that my moments on stage had quite possibly come to an end. Within a year, I had decided to retire from performing and move into a different career role. I quit every job I had, traveled across the country and back for 41 days and did a LOT of soul searching. I reflected on things I was great at, things I wasn't so great at, and things I loved to do when I was younger. All of those things combined with my production experience led me directly to the wedding industry, specifically coordination.

How did you choose your company name?
My company is simply my own name. I had brainstormed several names at first, but looked at the bigger names in the industry and felt like that was the route that worked best for me. In business, that's a key factor: doing what works for your own company.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
During my time in the wedding industry so far, I've achieved things that I never thought possible. I gave myself a big pat on the back when I was announced the winner of the Backstage Bridal Pro Scholarship. Other proud moments included being named the Best Wedding Planner in my area based on community votes, being published on 100 Layer Cake, Style Me Pretty and Green Wedding Shoes, and ultimately, I get extremely proud of each of my weddings. My clients are the best clients for me and our relationships continue past their wedding day - that is so important to me.

What are your greatest challenges or fears?
Challenges and fears?? I don't have any (<--BIG LIE). Ok, I'm scared of snakes, heights and failing. I have a quote on my desk that reads "You miss 100% of the opportunities you do not take". When I first started in this industry, I was intimidated. I said no to opportunities and felt incredibly unworthy of the options being presented to me. Finally, I woke up one day and decided to take on those challenges head on and do my best. It's opened so many doors that would have stayed locked if I didn't say "yes".

Share your favorite wedding photo or item.

Where do you see your company going in the next 5 years?
I have some very exciting things in the works that I can't completely share yet. But I definitely see my company growing and developing with the needs of my community. Coordination is still considered a high-end luxury in my area and I really hope to be a part of what changes that in the near future.

Why did you choose to attend Backstage Bridal Pro Academy?
I had followed BBPro for a while and had done a lot of research about the courses, instructors and overall experience. But my decision to do whatever I could to attend this workshop came when I saw the video done with Tami and Amber Gustafson. I saw a lot of myself in Amber and knew I would be getting so much out of this experience that I had to find a way. A recent rebranding cost made funding impossible so I'm incredibly grateful to have been chosen as the Grand Prize Winner of the scholarship contest. Now, the ball is in my court to make every moment count to the fullest.

Your Wedding Business: Courage

I can't count how many times I've heard people say they want to be self employed, but they don’t (or can’t) move forward on their dreams because they’re afraid. There are so many things to be afraid of when you’re self employed: fear of failure, fear of success, fear of illness, fear of lawsuits. No money, no time, no skills, no help, no support.

Being self employed takes a particular type of courage. You have to be willing to take action with no guarantees of success. You have to be willing to put all your heart and soul into your enterprise, and you have to be willing to face and overcome the roadblocks that get in your way. You have to be willing to dream big dreams, and have the guts to learn new things that you never knew how to do before.

On top of all that, you need the type of courage that shouts, “I must do this or I won’t have lived my life purpose.” It takes strength, focus and responsibility to succeed or fail on your own merits, and to be willing to ask for help or education when you need it.

Do you have the courage to face your fears and keep walking towards your dream anyway? Do you have the strength and dignity to act consistently and responsibly towards your business, on a daily basis, without whimpering in self-defeating behaviors and excuses? Do you have the guts to set a big goal, create reasonable action plans that stretch and challenge you, and move forward on those tasks knowing that you have no guarantee of success?

Every self employed person feels fear at one time or another. The next time you hear yourself saying, “I’m afraid,” reply with a knowing smile and say to yourself, “Join the crowd.” Then, summon up that well of courage and take responsibility to create the life and business you’ve dreamed of.

Because, if you don’t have that type of courage, you probably shouldn’t be self employed in the first place. Being self employed is about challenging yourself and the world. It’s not about taking the easy way; it’s about taking the only way that will give you a sense of self-fulfillment and success.

How I Effed Up in Social Media

Me, a perfectionist? No way! Ok, maybe a little. I prefer to say that I'm highly motivated to do everything I do with the best intent and results. I really REALLY strive to deliver on everything I teach. I actually write every post you see from me on our blog. I actually do the things I write about and show results and effort on a daily basis. I am very rigid about this. I am passionate. I have integrity. It means a lot to me.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS SOCIAL... HELLO!
We know, or at least we should know that social media is supposed to be social. We know, or at least we should know that everyone has different ideas, methods and approaches to their social media marketing tactics. One thing that's difficult for me is to see direct marketing pitches. Let me explain.

We're in the wedding business. We should all be talking about our companies, products and services in our timelines. We should all be getting into conversations about our companies, products and services with our fans and followers. We should share interesting, relevant and valuable information about what to do in our streams. At the end of the day, that's why we're on Facebook and Twitter, right?

But I'm referring to the new follower who never engages with you at all... EVER! You know the one who posts on your wall, invites you to random events on the other side of the world. The one who does things like mentioning you on Twitter with a pitch and a link. Yeah that one! You know the one. So freaking annoying, right?!

This frequent fail in social media has caused me to be cautious and sensitive to our pitches in OUR social media strategy. However, there has to be a balance. I was totally unbalanced. I was on the other end of the spectrum. Being friendly and nice and not pitching much about Backstage Bridal Pro Academy. ME! I screwed up my own rigid social media plan!

SHOOT ME NOW!
So how did I know I was doing it wrong? You will not believe this. It's tragic. But here goes...laid out for all the world to see...judge...spit on! {this is where I take a few deep cleansing breaths and press on}

A friend, {like my actual friend not just a social media friend} who follows me religiously, was speaking to me about her endeavors. Then she asked "So what have you been up to?" So I begin to dig right in on Backstage Bridal Pro Academy because of course she knows since she follows me so closely and all. And...she had no flipping flapping idea what in the world I was talking about!! {BLASPHEMY! SAY IT ISN'T SO!} I proceeded to explain and she said...wait for it, wait for it...

"OMG! I had no idea this is what you've been up to. This is amazing! I haven't heard about until now!"

Can we say OUCH? Or better yet, can we say DEFLATED! *picks face up off of floor and the egg that was all over my face as well #sadface

FAIL on my part. I'll take that. It sucks. But it is what it is and I'm humbled once again. Ah well. Lesson learned. I truly failed our social media marketing strategy, tactics and methodology. I became so over sensitive about our message being too loud that I turn the volume all the way down. I was failing at getting our message across to even our most supportive audience. Not good. And even worse, those that know me well did not even know what we do as an organization. FAIL FAIL FAIL!

3 LESSONS
1). Although you should never be over eager to pitch your products or service, you must ensure that your message is getting across to your audience.
2). The people you have built relationships with should never be the LAST in your audience to understand what you do.
3). Build relationships, help other people but ensure that the value of your brand, product and messaging cuts through.

I've spent the last few weeks pondering where our messaging was so far off that it got to this point. We're implementing some changes to some things internally and personally with our content and conversations to remedy this. When people that you know and like don't know what you do, you may need a little bit more media in your social media. I am utterly embarrassed, yet motivated to ensure the enormous value that Backstage Bridal Pro Academy delivers to the wedding industry gets heard!

Dealing With Negative Friends and Family Members

If you future were determined solely off the friends you have now, what do you think your future will look like?

If every job or potential client depended on the company you keep instead of your skills and experience, now would it turn out for you?

Now that I have your attention, are you at least thinking about it?

BIRDS OF A FEATHER
The idea of being guilty by association has surrounded us for years. This led me to ask whether my own friendships were propelling me forward or keeping me at a stand still. I am very blessed to be surrounded by a circle of friends and a supportive husband who challenge me to push myself everyday. Sadly this hasn't always been the case for me. And neither is it the case for many others. Let's face it, not all of us have great support systems. There are many people who do not want to see others succeed or accomplish their dreams.

When I took a long hard look at my friendships, family members and associations, I realized I was holding onto bad or damaged relationships due to the fact that they were in my circle of influence. I held onto these superficial relationships because I thought I needed them but they were actually doing me more harm than good. I had to get alone and really do some honest evaluations before I realized I needed to purge myself of poor relationships.

SOCIAL CIRCLES IN SOCIAL MEDIA
I'm an avid user of Facebook and Twitter but there are times when I haven't enjoyed it much at all. Times when my friends or family members are posting things that make me shake my head furiously. Times when I've looked at my timeline to see people broadcast (in their passive aggressive way) about how they have negative people in their life, yet they a writing about and not actually deleting the person nor are they moving on.

Look, I admit... I have been guilty of this a time or two. I'm not talking about the occasional vent or rant. I'm talking about the constant barrage of complaints and high level drama that can stem from people talking on social media instead of taking it to the person directly. If you can think of a time when you wrote about removing a friend from your social circle but haven't acted on it, then I am speaking to you! Do you realize how valuable a resource that our time and energy are? If so, then you should be proactive in protecting these resources. You should be conservative on how, where and on whom your time and energy is spent. Celebrate your friends and colleagues and purge yourself of those that bring you down mentally, spiritually, physically and socially.

ASK YOURSELF
"Are these people adding value to my life?"
"Do I feel better or worse than I did before I spoke to them?
How many times have you spent time with someone only to feel completely drained afterward?
Or they're constantly putting you down even if it's in a subtle way?
Or you're part of an organization and you find you dread the night you have to go to their meetings because you don't want to deal with a certain person or situation?

So why do you keep hanging around and associating with these people even after we realize they're unhealthy for us?

SO WHAT DO I DO?
It's really time to think and reflect on who are the positive influences in your world. We should be intentional when selecting certain people to be in our lives.

My suggestion is that if you find yourself being loyal to people who are not loyal to you...it's time for a new circle. If every time you share your dream they kill it...it's time for a new circle. If you are the smartest person on your circle...it's time for a new circle. At the very least, you owe it to yourself to expand your circle.

You need to surround yourself with the thoughts and teachings of people who are smarter and wiser and more creative than you are. This will allow you to conjure up new and exciting dreams. By surrounding yourself with the most competent individuals you can is an act of supreme self-confidence as well as a sign of a healthy ego.

Here we bring you a wonderful mock wedding shoot by Julia Whitley of Serendipitous Events by Julia in Palos Verdes, California, was inspired by the modern Victorian bride. Julia shares how she was inspired to bring Fabulous and Graceful to life in this mock wedding shoot: "As part of a couple that has both been previously married and had wonderful, traditional big weddings, I wanted to create a stylized wedding that spoke volumes of class, grace, sophistication, simplicity and life. To me, nothing is more fabulous. Drawn to the bride that likes to show variety in her taste, that takes a simple color palette into simple beauty with fabulous touches, I wanted to create a look that created a mood, not just a pretty photograph. The evocation of emotion is prevalent in the vintage weddings, yet I wanted to create a fabulous design with vintage touches. My color palette began with a base of earth tones that resonate with my love for outdoor weddings which are blossoming with life."

"Chandler Park in Rolling Hills Estates, has always had a peaceful allure. I walked down to take a peek at how and if it had changed, and I was taken aback by the possibility of a quaint wedding ceremony under the trees. I began writing a love story that was entitled “And, The Bride wore Black” about a bride who wanted her love story written as if her dress was the pen, rather than the picture. Most people equate the color black for a wedding dress as Gothic or Goth. They assumption is often that the bride may have tattoos or piercings. A fabulous wedding can absolutely have the bride in black especially with the delicacy and grace of the Victorian Style."

"As I glanced at the bridle trails in the park, I thought of a beautiful Victorian wedding with a black and gray color scheme with touches of white. The backdrop would have horses, dogs and hints of things present during the Victorian era. It was such a graceful time in history and I wanted to keep the theme subtle, yet felt through the emotion of each captured moment. A full dress with a petticoat that flowed along the green grass was a picturesque image."

"I am a collector of old world candelabras and have several tall, wrought iron stems waiting in my garage to be used for an event such as this. I have always wanted to use them for centerpieces, but loved the look of them as a faint outline of the black aisle runner. Over time I had gathered multiple items that worked perfectly with the outdoor setting including dresses for Cotillions and formals. The piece that added truly fabulous to the design was the antique, crystal wedding tree. Ah, what a gorgeous piece of history to utilize in place of an arbor. The crystals caught every fabulous ray of the 3pm sunlight cascading through the trees. Everything began to unfold as I gathered items to make it feel as if we had stepped back in time, because in many ways through my love story, I had."

Katrina shares what inspired her to create this romantic escort card display: "Were you that girl that dreamed of her wedding? Do you have endless dreams of you in that beautiful dress? Or did you feel like a little princess every time you put on a gown? Well hey you aren’t alone. As young ladies, we often think of ourselves as princesses, and some of the childhood favorites is snow what, Cinderella, Barbie or even princess jasmine; but as we grow into woman we still never do away with all the lovely fairytales. I instantly think of poufy dresses, beautiful shades of pink and rose and amazing shoes of course; therefore that’s why I de-cided to create an amazing escort card table to fit that modern fairytale bride."

"The escort card table consist of bling and fillers, several shades of pink, beautiful orchids, beautiful lilies as the centerpiece, and last a very mod-ern but yet simple escort card that’s attached to each vase for your guest."

DIY Centerpieces

I cut the steams from the both the lily plant and orchid plant. For the lily centerpiece I took between 2-4 flowers and submerged them in water upside down, than added about 10-12 orchids in a bunch, and attempted to get that hang over effect. For the orchid, I simply added the orchid to a tall vase filled with water and adjusted the flowers to my likings.

DIY Escort Card Candle

Cut ribbon approximately 1 ft. I than used a glue dot to assemble the ribbon together, after the ribbon is on the vase tightly, I attached the escort card with hot glue via the glue gun. Afterwards I filled my vase with my bling/fillers, and than added water, votives holders, and votive candle. I lit the candle and there you have a beautiful escort card and candle.

"The escort candle can also be used for personal take home favor for your guest. This table is filled with all types of fabulosity; however this table represents elegance, style and last but not least…grace."

As we wind down the fantastic the Annual Backstage Bridal Pro Academy Scholarship Contest. I am thrilled to share with you a super cute shoot that reminds me so much of the Little Rascals. Danielle Pasternak of Danielle Pasternak Wedding Coordinator in Pennsylvania, was inspired miniaturized items and a nod to childhood and the wedding dreams of a little girl. Consider this a glimpse at her dream wedding through the eyes of her youth. Be sure to leave your comments if you are in love with Danielle's entry. Danielle weaves a magical story on how she translated Fabulous and Graceful: "A big trend we are seeing in the wedding world are miniature-sized items with a nod to our child-hood. Finger foods, cake pops, mashed potato stations, and cupcakes are all starting to wipe out seven-layer cakes and twice baked potatoes. Why is this happening? I see all of these items as things that provided comfort in our youth."

"The full tablescape came together using vintage china pieces, stunning gold flatware, mismatched chairs and stemware along with Grandma’s lace doilies to represent the Bride. The Groom’s taste came through in the centerpieces with candles, wooden crates, a large branch structure and some Spanish moss. To add some more sparkle and coordinate with the gold flatware, we glittered a wooden “3” to represent the table number. To greet each guest was a lovely cupcake because sometimes dessert can come first. On the menu for dinner was petite shrimp, grilled cheese bites with cream of tomato sips, a little spaghetti and meatball and a spoonful of mac."

"The sweetheart table was designed using a vintage coffee table (just the right size) and a blush pink, vintage loveseat. The flowers were incorporated to match the bouquet of the Bride while candles were added to the groom’s side to tie in to the larger tablescape. Plates were raised onto small stands and two bite-sized cookies awaited their arrival."

"After dinner, there would be some chatting and discussing held in the Milk and Cookie Lounge. More vintage sofas were brought in as well as a stack of old suitcases that were formed to make a coffee table. We had several different kinds of cookies to be enjoyed with a cold glass of white and/or chocolate milk."

"Once the guests had their fill of cookies, they were invited to share a dance with their loved one and indulge in the sweet display complete with cake pops and miniature cakes. This is also where we decided to use old, metal letterpress letters to spell out “Grace and Fab”."

"Overall, this shoot was truly about the innocent and soft views of what a wedding should be through the eyes of a child. To me, there isn’t anything more graceful or fabulous than that."
