With that bizarre finish, Centennial coach Randy Roberts stepped down after going 421-143-3 with three section titles in a 20-year career with the Hawks. He announced previously he would resign after the season.

In a key moment in a Central Section Division I softball quarterfinal Thursday at Stockdale, Mustangs pitcher Ashlee Rex got exactly what she needed -- a bouncer right back at her that could start a double play.

Only, something was wrong: The ball somehow got lodged in Rex's glove, and by the time she retrieved it, another Fresno-Central run had crossed the plate.

Despite beating Tulare Western 11-2 during the regular season, the Garces softball team knew not to expect a similar lopsided result come playoff time.

The Rams were just hoping to squeeze out a Central Section Division II quarterfinal victory of any sort Thursday against the Mustangs.
