We received the first of the autumn rain over the last couple of days….there’s a real sense of freshness in the air! And as the season continues to change the images from our hilltop to the valley below are spectacular. There’s no greater contrast than now….when the hills are still brown, albeit with just a touch of green hinting as what’s ahead, but the valleys of fruit orchards below are awash with colour. The summer dust has now settled and our hilltop forest takes on a new freshness. Nothing like walking through the bush after the rain…! Check put these images taken today after the rains had cleared. A change of season

There is nothing quite like the change of season here in Balingup. And we woke to an amazing reminder of its beauty this morning…the first mist of the year! From the top of our hill you could see nothing but a blanket of white. Spectacular! Check out these pics:

One of the pleasurable things about running Balingup Heights is the wonderful people that you meet along the way. Sometimes it’s a long chat as they arrive and they are still in awe of the trip up our driveway and the spectacular views, or a quick chat as they pass on a morning walk. Other times we may not even get to chat as the guests are ‘busy’ relaxing. Recent guests Andre and Roz stayed in our Blythe Cottage and they took the time to drop us this short e-mail once they returned to Perth. We chatted with them a couple of times during their stay and knew that they were enjoying their own slice of heaven, but this feedback says it all! Thanks Andre & Roz…glad you enjoyed your stay.

“Just a short note to say thanks so much for the weekend. The Chalet was perfect and loved all the little details such as the products, porch couch, coasters for the coffee mugs next to the bed, fan, books, CDs, games – and especially the ‘good taste’ of the room. Everything we needed was there but not ‘over the top’ – just perfect.

We’ll definitely be returning – and everyone’s talking about these mists in the valley – so got to get back for that in the winter time.

A flock a brood and a clutch!

It’s been a steep and fun learning curve over the past 2 1/2 years. One thing that we haven’t tired of, and are still learning about, is our chickens. We started with three and now have around 14…. having lost several along the way. We don’t bred them to eat but they are the best recyclers, eating just about anything and they do supply us with the most yummy eggs. They all have names, mostly provided by our daughters, and include Misty, Trisha, Pecket, Luna, Little Red and of course John the Rooster…to name just a few.

It’s still a very special event when a new clutch of chicks is born. Recently we had four of our hens brood at the same time and you can see the result in this little video. I’m not sure there is anything cuter than a new born chick! Enjoy!

Lavender Bloom

Despite being neighbours we sometimes overlook some of the magical spots right on our door step!

In need of inspiration for some Christmas gifts I visited the Balingup Lavender Farm today. Some 4,000 plants in full bloom . . . including many varieties of lavender, roses, colourful perennials and some unusual deciduous trees. The aroma is just intoxicating.

. . . and as for my shopping, I found a couple of beautiful gifts. The owners, Pauline and Richard are wonderfully interesting people and are always happy to show visitors through their distillery.

I couldn’t resist a little treat for myself – have you ever tried lavender ice cream?

Just as you never know which swim at the beach will be your last for the season, so too are we never sure when we’ll wake up to our last heavy mist for the season! Was today the last or will we get another one tomorrow?

Spring Picnic 2011

Saturday October 15th sees the holding of the annual Spring Picnic at the Golden Valley Tree Park. This spectacular community run event features a range of activities throughout the afternoon, culminating in an enormous evening bonfire, complete with exploding bamboo! The evening will also see performances from many local musicians. A highlight of the night for us will be the original dance performance, choreographed by Cassandra, owner of local herbal products shop Tinderbox, and featuring our daughters Asha & Mia, together with other local girls from Balingup. The Spring Picnic is always and amazing evening, where the community really comes together to celebrate spring. This year promises to be even more memorable. Join us…all welcome!

School Holidays

Another school holidays are just around the corner. If you are looking for a break in the South West then we still have availability. It’s a spectacular time of year in Balingup, with some trees in full blossom and others already sprouting green leaves! Our big oak tree that stands in front of the Farmhouse has already gone from bare to a mass of green!
