I’ve been using WordPress for over a decade.

For both client sites & personal sites, there’s no getting around the power of the WordPress platform. I’ve used most of the popular WordPress plugins and a services enough to know which ones are good and which are rubbish right off. Some, however are a little tricky to decide upon. Premium plugins are surely an interesting landscape. As the old saying goes, you (often) get what you pay for. The internet landscape has been a wonder of open-source, free to use products since it’s inception, but it’s seem that “Freemium” has become more of a reality these days. When it comes to WordPress, we are enticed by free plugins with a premium upgrade available. This was how I discovered WP Smush, which introduced me to WPMU. WP Smush is an image optimizing plugin that you can install for free to get better website performance, which is useful for SEO. It offers basic image compression for free, but highly recommends moving up to the “PRO” tier for even better performance. This is one (of the many) paid services that has been on my mind for quite a while. Is WPMU dev worth the cost of its service? Disclaimer: this is not a review, just an opinion piece.

For the uninitiated, WMPUdev is a service that offers WordPress management and premium plugins at a monthly fee. The “Standard” fee is $50/mo. Of these plugins, WP Hummingbird & WP Smush are of particular interest. Hummingbird is a plugin that offers to speed up your WordPress site and WP Smush compresses and optimizes images. both of these are important and vital services that are very useful on any WP install. Along with these are many other well written plugins with various functionalities for WP users.

So you actually get quite a lot of functionality for the $50 buy in. But is it worth it? I’ve been a fan of the WMPU blog for a while. It gives a lot of really good info, even though it inevitably drives the reader back to its own set of plugins. There’s no doubt that the people behind WPMU have tons of knowledge, expertise and experience when it comes to WordPress. I read every email they send out and learn something with each.

But are the plugins worth the cost?

On that I’d just have to say… Maybe. If you are a website owner that wants a one stop shop for everything to do with your WordPress, WMPU isn’t a bad choice. $50/month isn’t that bad for all that you get. the problem is that once you stop your subscription, all of your plugins are basically useless. They will still continue to function, but they are updated quite often, and if there were a security vulnerability, you would be at risk unless you paid to renew. This isn’t just a WMPU issue, all premium plugins suffer the same Achilles heel, but with WPMU you might have 5 to 10 plugins that you can’t renew.

Also, WPMU’s plugins are quite polished, but they aren’t necessarily any better than the top free plugins out there. As is always the case, there are plenty of other options to resolve any issue. WPMU’s are conveniently all in one place and easy to manage. But given just a little research, I think you could find 2-3 readily acceptable alternatives. They might not be as slick as the WPMU options, but they get the job done. And, you can get them à la carte. With WPMU, you by one, you buy them all.

If you own a website and don’t have time to dig into the details of everything, this might be totally worth it for you. And I think you will be perfectly happy. As a developer, and manager of multiple WordPress sites, I have to say WPMU dev isn’t worth it for me. I don’t like being held hostage for plugins, even thought they might be excellent. Also, qas a personal note… I feel like there’s something very wrong with making it difficult to uninstall something from your website. I decided to take the WPMU plugins off one of my sites and I found that they didn’t make it terribly easy. Could be just an over site, but this wreaks of overcapitalization, in my opinion. It took 10 minutes to uninstall 5 plugins. This is a small amount of time, I understand, but in this environment its and eternity, and I shouldn’t have to figure it out. And this was the final part of the experience that prompted me to write about it.

So what is WPMU dev Worth?

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with WPMU, in general. I think it’s a good service, with slick marketing and resources that are very informative and well-done. They follow the formula as well as anyone. Maybe too well. I can’t see myself using it in the future, and I think most people who manage multiple websites will agree. But if you want to get a quick suite of plugins to build your website, it’s definitely a solid option. Just be aware that the minute you stop paying, the plugins will become obsolete. And they will never stop trying to sell you. Good or bad, that remains to be seen, but I think that society is getting tired of being oversold.

And that brings me to the problem that I have

And not just with WPMU dev, but the way that the industry is starting to develop and capitalize on things that were once considered “necessary”. I just don’t like the current model that soooo many companies are using to lock you into monthly contracts, that you can never let lapse or you’ll lose updates and support. When a plugin stops getting updated, it becomes vulnerable to hacking, through vulnerabilities that get identified and patched in the updates, which you aren’t getting if you aren’t subscribed. It seems that the internet is becoming a completely subscription based model and, if you cancel the subscription, you become liable. Services that you use and cancel when you no longer need them, are fine. Software like Adobe’s Creative Cloud, the purveyors of the ubiquitous PhotoShop & much more, are fine (my issues with them lie elsewhere). Creative Cloud is way to pay monthly for software that you would normally have to pay a large fee up front, and in exchange you get constant updates and various other benefits. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty good. The plugin problem is that it leaves your website exposed. These subscription based plugins are softly holding you hostage, since you really need to uninstall it if you aren’t using it to prevent it opening any security holes. I, personally, think that security updates should be free. Rant over.

Magento Community Edition has had 3 critical patches this year to correct a vulnerability that was exposed which would allow hackers to gain access to your customers info. Details and patches can be found here: https://www.magentocommerce.com/download. You’ll need to have access to SSH to patch your installation, and if you don’t know how to do this click here for SSH instructions (this is for siteground hosting, but most hosts using cPanel will have a similar process). This is often the most tedious part, and if you don’t have SSH/Shell access you might need to contact your host or developer.

Here is what I did to patch:

Backup your site files & database. If you don’t know how, Read my article on backing up magento.

Download the file PATCH_SUPEE-5994_CE_1.6.0.0_v1-2015-05-15-04-34-46.sh from https://www.magentocommerce.com/download (if you didn’t do the previous SUPEE-1533 & SUPEE-5344, do those first).

Upload the .sh file into the root directory of you Magento Install

Login to your site using SSH (I use Putty) and navigate to your root Magento directory (usually PUBLIC_HTML).

Run the command:
sh PATCH_SUPEE-5994_CE_1.6.0.0_v1-2015-05-15-04-34-46.sh
. This will initiate the patch. If all goes well, it should say something like “Patch was applied/reverted successfully.”.

Now login to your store backend, go to the “Cache Management” page and refresh your caches to apply the changes.

Now, you should be all set, but there is a chance that you might have a broken store (which did happen to me) giving you a blank screen with an error like “PHP Fatal error: Class ‘Mage_Install_Controller_Router_Install’ not found in /var/www/x/public_html/app/code/core/Mage/Core/Controller/Varien/Front.php on line 138″. This kind of error always gives me a sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach, because I know you shouldn’t deploy changes on a live site, but I do it anyways. It could either be a quick fix or it could require you to restore your whole damn site backup (you did backup your site before you tried to apply this patch didn’t you?).

Luckily, this time its an easy fix, which a quick google search revealed on Magento Stack Exchange. Turns out it’s just a compiler error. Here’s the skinny:

If you logged out of SSH, log back in

Run the Following commands (in order):

php -f shell/compiler.php -- disable
php -f shell/compiler.php -- clear
php -f shell/compiler.php -- compile
php -f shell/compiler.php -- enable

Now just refresh your page and you should be back up and running. Here's the page i found on Stack Exchange which I'm citing here.

Hopefully, you are now all patched and ready to go and I hope this helped.

You should backup a Magento store regularly. You definitely do so before installing any extensions or making any changes to the files. Most of the time, however, Magento installs are too large to back up using the built-in cPanel backup utilities. It’s pretty easy to do so manually using cPanel, however and here’s how.

Backup Your Magento Database:

Login to your site’s cPanel

Go into phpMyAdmin

Find and open your site’s Magento database

Now is a good time to clear the “logs” if you want to make the DB a little smaller. There are about 5 tables with the word”_log_” in the name which can grow quite large, so it’s ok to empty those now.

Go to “Export”, select custom, and under “Compression” I usually choose “gzipped” because it is a smaller file. Also, make sure “SQL” is set as the file type.

Click “Go” and your database will begin downloading. This may take a few minutes.

Backup your Magento Store Files:

in cPanel, Navigate to your “File Manager”

In the “PUBLIC_HTML” folder, click “Select All”

Now click “Compress” and select “GZiped Tar Archive” in the pop-up.

Choose a name for your backup (I’d recommend something including the date) & Click “Compress File (s), to begin the archive. This should only take a minute or so.

Now select the file you just made and click download to save it to your local machine.

Now you have a copy of both the DB & site files in 2 separate, tidy little files. You can also do this more quickly using SSH. We’ll have an article on that soon.

Well, it was a big surprise to see that Commative completely abandoned the Ultimento theme, leaving tons of subscribers scratching their heads. The popular and very robust theme for Magento Community installations was a good product and had a lot of nice features, so it’s very surprising to see it completely relegated the age of extinction.

They did send out the email with the files to unlock it, but if you didn’t get in there to fix it before they completely shut the server down, you might have a nasty pop-up saying that you are using an unlicensed version of Ultimento that comes up with every page load, and you have to wait 15 seconds or so to close it. Frustrating.

So… well here’s the email:

To many business owners think that “gaming” the search engines will yield long-term results, but this helps to break down the right way to do SEO and I think every legit SEO’er follows this method, whether they refer to the infographic or not.

I knew that they were awesome, and the CTR’s (Click Through Rates) were typically 10-20% higher than the keyword CTR on average. But which of the sitelinks in AdWords were they clicking? Was one performing better than the other? Which one converts best? Which one has the worst Bounce Rate? I bet most of you out there aren’t tracking them either (That’s considering you are even using them, which you should be). I knew that there had to be a good way & in all fairness, Google should be making it much easier, because this is important stuff. All the searches that I did online were mostly our of date info, since Google keep changing around the Analytics interface. But, I eventually worked out a solution for tracking sitelinks in AdWords, and I’m here to share it with you.

First Step: Adwords sitelinks tracking can only be initiated by manually tagging the sitelink destination URL. You can use whatever tag you’d like, but I would recommend using “sitelink”. So, let’s say your url is (and mine is)
https://www.ballisticwebsites.com
you’d add
/?sitelink=
which sets the variable name & the value
PPC-Management
(note that there are no spaces) to define which sitelink is being tracked, in this instance, “PPC Management”. Set a unique value for each individual sitelink in your account so that you can properly track. If you have the same name on multiple campaigns, I would recommend making them uniquely tagged so that you can properly track. The final result will look like this:
https://www.ballisticwebsites.com/?sitelink=PPC-Management
.

Once you’ve got them tagged, you’ll want to sit on them for a few days of course, to gather data. Then, jump on over to Google Analytics. Navigate to
Content -> Site Content -> Landing Pages
Then, in the “Filter” box (it’s the little box on the right side, just between the graph & rows) type “sitelink” & click the magnifying glass.

Analytics Custom Report Interface

This should filter out everything except the URL’s with the work “sitelink” in the them & now you know that you have your sitelinks tagged properly. You can also go one step further. If you want to get “fancy” (and I recommend it), go to
Custom Reporting -> New Custom Report
. Add the “Metrics” that you want to track & the “Dimensions” that you want to access & then (And this is critical) Select “Landing Page” under “Filters” and “Regex” from the dropdown, make sure to select “Regex” here![/caption] not “Exact” as this is what makes it work. Then put “sitelink” in that field. When you click “Save” you should see your MAginc Sitelinks report! Feel free to play around with this report & Metrics as much as you like, but do note one annoying little fact: the “Regex” filter automatically defaults back to “Exact” everytime that you edit the report, so if you find all your data gone (Oh NOoo!), just double check that drop-down box.

Make sure to select “Regex” here!

So, it may not be as easy as we all think that it should be, but it’s certainly not that bad. If we go back up to the first image, this report shows us that sitelink #4 has 100% bounce rate! Clearly there isn’t enough data, yet, to make an informed decision, but at least we know to start checking it out. Setting up Adwords sitelinks tracking give you a lot of visibility into those extremely powerful AdWords extensions & hopefully it will help you choose the best way to use them on your own or clients accounts. If you are already tracking sitelinks, but using a different method to do so, I’d love to here about it!

If you are new to advertising on Google, getting the most out of AdWords can seem overwhelming. A lot of beginners focus on the keywords. It’s the keywords that bring in the business, right? So let just gloss over the campaign settings and get down to the nitty-gritty, you say? Not so fast. The campaign settings are the first and main place that new advertisers go wrong. It’s crucial to get this part right for a number of reasons. And there are those darn broad match keywords. And how do you really know what’s working? Here are some small things that you should check & fix immediately to make sure that you aren’t pouring money down the drain.

1- Turn off the Display Network
This is the #1 thing that could cost you hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars if you don’t realize that it’s happening. Under “Campaign Settings” & “Networks” it should always look like this on a keyword-based campaign:
If you’re wondering why, well it’s because the display network is showing your ads to thousands of “browsers” all over the internet and the click-thru-rate is terribly low. The quality of clicks isn’t very good either. This is your very first step toward refining your campaigns to know exactly what your ads & keywords are doing.

2 – Set Up Analytics
Hey I thought this was an AdWords Post? Why are we talking about analytics now? Well, you do want to know what you are getting for your money don’t you? Analytics isn’t just a recommendation, it’s crucial to getting top performance out of your advertising. Make sure that you have your Analytics account linked to your AdWords Account, Auto-Tagging enabled in Adwords (My Account -> Tracking) & Some sort of conversion tracking set-up. This allows you to know exactly where your traffic is coming from, which keywords they clicked, how many stayed on your site, where they are, how many took the action that you wanted to take & so much more.

3 – Learn Your Match Types
The 2nd fastest way to burn through your advertising budget is to use the default “Broad Match” keywords. By “Broad Match” we mean “really broad, match-ish”. Broad match will match to synonyms or words that Google deems to be “close matches” to your keyword. The problem with this is that if your keyword is “blue shoes”, the search engine may literally show your ad to someone searching “aqua boots”. If you don’t sell aqua boots, this is a wasted impression & possible click. Consider all the ways that this could go awry. Using “phrase match” or “exact match” will show your ad only to the most relevant searches. Personally, I almost never use broad match. If you are looking to explore for new keywords it could help you, but don’t expect a lot of conversions from it.

4 – Accentuate the Positives – Eliminate the Negatives
The longer your ads run, the more data you will aquire. If you’re account has been running for a little while you need to start making decisions on this data. When you are able to identify the top keywords that getting high-quality traffic are making you the most money, put it into a campaign where you can give it it’s own budget and MAX IT OUT. If a particular ad/keyword combination is making $2 for every $1 that you spend, you want to spend as many dollars on that ad as possible, right? Next, using your search query report, find the least valuable keywords and either delete or make them negative keywords. Don’t waste money on a product that is unprofitable or irrelevant to your business.

5 – Test Your Ads Continually
Don’t think of PPC as a selection of keywords. A keyword is just that… a “key” word. Your ad text is what’s doing the work. Continually test your ads to see which one gets the best results for your ads. Better ads get better Click-Through, so they get yo more traffic and lower CPC. How do you know when you have a winner? I like this tool. It takes a solid amount of data to make an informed decision, so this tool will tell you how it’s doing.

These are just some of the top tips to help you put your money in the right place. There are many, many other things that you can (and should) be doing to get the most out of your budget, such as refining your campaign structure, optimizing for mobile & using remarketing to stay top-of mind, to name a few but hopefully you will (or have already) log into your AdWords account today and make these changes right away to maximize your marketing dollars.

In a recent announcement from Google, the Website Optimizer tool in AdWords is being retired. Google is constantly evolving and shaking things up to try and make things more logical & useful to advertisers & webmasters. This is intended to streamline the systems a bit.

So, what is Website Optmizer, you say? In a nutshell, Website Optimizer was an awesome tool that allows webmasters to be able to quickly serve up dynamic content to a website visitor & measure which change had the greatest impact on conversions & therefore sales. For instance, say you have a “Lead Generation” landing page for, let’s say veterinary medicine, and you want to see if photo #1 (a happy, little Jack Russell) or photo #2 (a sad & lumbering Irish Wolfhound) would cause more people to fill out your contact form. You could set up the test to show half the visitors photo #1 & the other half would see photo #2. Once the test was completed, you could see which photo led to more conversions & decide whether or not to make the change for all visitors. Pretty cool & an amazing resource for landing page optimization.

So why is it being retired? Well, here’s the letter from Google:

An important note about the future of Website Optimizer
Dear Website Optimizer User,

We’re saying goodbye to Google Website Optimizer. Many marketers and publishers have improved the web by using insights from Website Optimizer to create better experiences for their users. To elevate website optimization and provide one fully integrated tool for testing, content optimization will now have a new home within Google Analytics. The last day you’ll be able to access Google Website Optimizer will be August 1st, 2012.

If you’re looking to start a new experiment, please use our new tool, located within Google Analytics called Content Experiments. We’ve put a great deal of effort into providing this tool that makes testing as easy as possible. Content Experiments comes with a simple set up wizard, identifies the statistically significant best variation, and provides insightful reports on your website engagement. This is just the first step we’re taking to simplify website testing, and we’re looking forward to adding more experimentation features into Google Analytics.

If you’re not a Google Analytics user, we invite you to sign up now to get access to the new Content Experiments tool, which is available to all Google Analytics users. To learn more about the new Content Experiments tool, read our blog post or check out this video. Make sure you’re a Google Analytics user now to ensure uninterrupted experiments when Website Optimizer is shut down on Aug 1, 2012. If you would like professional assistance in designing, implementing, or interpreting the results of a test, simply go to the Google Analytics Partner page and select “Website Optimizer” from the Specialization menu.

We hope you enjoyed using Website Optimizer and that you will find a lot of value in our new Content Experiments tool. Thank you for helping to make websites better.

Sincerely,
Google Website Optimizer team

Ok, so it’s not really dead… It just moving to another location and I think this actually makes sense. While Website Optimizer is a tool for advertisers, it more of a tool for webmasters, in general so it makes sense that it would be part of analytics. And it’s being revamped, as well. According to Google Analytics Support site, in the new “content Experiments” tool:

You’re not testing just two versions of a page as in A/B testing, and you’re not testing various combinations of components on a single page as in multivariate testing. Instead, you are testing up to five full versions of a single page, each delivered to visitors from a separate URL.

It will be interesting to see just how this new tool works out. As soon as I get some time to play around with it, I’ll try to get a write-up about it.

And since we are talking about changes that make sense, I personally would like to see Webmaster Tools integrated into Google Analytics as well. Why do I need a completely different site & experience to see the top search queries & rankings or submit a sitemap? It would be so much nicer if it were part of Google Analytics.

So, here’s the link to the new content experiments tool and hopefully you will have some good results. Let me know if you find anything that really stands out about it.

Thanks for reading.
