It seems silly, but there are certain markers in life—birthdays, anniversaries, special holidays. For us, the Best of Baltimore issue has always been one of those markers. It's our way of reflecting back on another great year and seeing just how far we've come. We get to celebrate old friends, anoint new favorites, and basically bask in the greatness that is our city. Of course, we always have to change things up a little, just for fun. So this year: Top-10 and Top-five lists! Yup, as an example, we don't just tell you Baltimore's best cupcake, but Baltimore's 10 best cupcakes.

Sing it with us..."It’s the most wonderful time of the year!" Okay, at least that’s how we feel about the Best of Baltimore issue. It’s our opportunity to shout from the rooftops about the people, businesses, and happenings that make Baltimore such a great place to live. Indeed, we like assembling our Best of Baltimore issue so much, we’ve done it 35 times. This year, a fun new wrinkle: Throwdowns! We were inspired by Bobby Flay’s recent trip to Baltimore, where the Food Network star took on pie guy Rodney Henry in a quiche-off. Sadly, Rodney lost . . .

Fierce. It’s the buzzword of the year, first introduced by America’s Next Top Model’s Tyra Banks and then popularized by Baltimore’s very own Christian Siriano, winner of Project Runway. (You go, boyfriend!)

So what does it mean? Its closest corollary is "fabulous," but with an extra touch of bravado, an envelope-pushing quality to give it that millennial twist. Which leads to the inevitable question: Is Baltimore fierce?

This being our hundredth anniversary and all (had you heard?), we’ve been reflecting quite a bit on this magazine and the kinds of stories our readers turn to over and over again. For the past 32 years, every summer, we’ve presented the very popular Best of Baltimore issue. Believe it or not, for a little while there, we actually included the worst of Baltimore, too, but that never stuck, and we think we know why. You see, the Best of Baltimore is all about having the people, places, and services that you already love get a little love from us.

Bread There is no shortage of caringly baked, delicious bread in the greater Baltimore area these days, and for that we are thankful. It was a close race, but our nod for the best goes to the berichonne loaf at Bonaparte Breads, 903 S. Ann Street, 410-342-4000. Its moist, fine crumb, defined but not overly crunchy crust, and oblong shape make for a versatile loaf that can fill a range of daily tasks, from toaster to lunchbox to grill.
