If Best Places to Work entries are an economic indicator, things are looking up, Baltimore.

Winners this year impressed us with everything from generous vacation time to fat tuition-reimbursement checks and even free parking downtown. These companies offer plenty of fun and unexpected perks, too, as well as career-development potential, and, in many cases, intellectually rewarding work. From spying to anti-spam programming, there are some very cool jobs to be done in and around Baltimore.

It's a new year, so our thoughts are naturally turning to the future. And despite the economic downturn felt here and elsewhere, things are looking pretty bright in Charm City. The thing we're most excited about? The infusion of fresh ideas, both from newcomers and mainstays alike—everyone, it seems, has a stake in the future of Baltimore. What are the best and boldest of those ideas? We went in search of 10 of them, and found them in fields as diverse as senior care, social media, and urban housing.

Yes, we know it's January—month of those dreaded resolutions—and no, we're not trying to guilt trip you. (Okay, maybe just a little.) But seriously, there's no excuse not to join a local gym at this point. You say you have no time? There are plenty of 24-hour gyms in the region. Afraid to be around the body-beautiful people? There are lots of gyms that cater to an older, more laid-back, or even out-of-shape clientele. Think you can't afford the fees? At least two of our featured gyms are $10 a month. Basically, whatever your particular version of a perfect gym might be, it's out there.

In 1831, 22-year-old Enoch Pratt, a former Boston hardware store clerk, moved to Baltimore, launching a wholesale hardware business at 29 S. Charles Street. Proving a successful merchant, he expanded his business interests to iron and coal, as well as horseshoe and nail manufacturing. A decade and a half later, Pratt built a family home at Monument Street and Park Avenue, walking to work and to Sunday services at the First Unitarian Church, past the location where the 125-year-old Central Library that bears his name stands today.

Summer in Baltimore appears like a revelation. After a long cold winter with seemingly endless snow, we are suddenly beset with sunshine, flowers, orioles, and Orioles! It's almost too much to bear. Don't worry—we're here to help. This month-by-month guide takes you through what we consider to be the area's most crucial events of the season, from Preakness to the state fair, and reacquaints you with local dog-day traditions, from community gardens and Harborplace shows to the best of them all: snowballs.

If you're looking for a dentist, or maybe just looking for a different dentist, we've done the homework for you.

We surveyed 2,500 DDSes in Baltimore and the five surrounding counties over the course of three months to find out whom they would send a member of their family to. Then, we broke the results down into geographic areas because, you know, nobody's going to drive an hour for a cavity.

Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, Shiloh . . . on and on go the names of unforgettable Civil War battles. The seemingly endless list of destruction that spanned 1861 to 1865 left 600,000 men dead and a landscape forever scarred by the blood of brother against brother. In Maryland, a border state, the tale of division and disunion was writ large. One contemporary described Maryland during the Civil War as "the weeping maiden, bound and fettered, seeking relief." Although officially allied with the Union, many Marylanders sympathized and supported the Confederate cause.

On the morning of April 19, 1861, the 6th Massachusetts Infantry arrived at Baltimore's President Street Station on its way to defend the nation's capitol in Washington City. Seven days earlier, South Carolina forces had fired on Fort Sumter, moving President Lincoln to call for 75,000 volunteers to suppress the rebellion. The soldiers aboard the train, which had left Boston two days earlier, formed the first fully armed regiment to volunteer.

Baltimore has always been a city of neighborhoods, every one a universe unto itself. Each section of our city has its own history, culture, and personality—an identity that can only be truly understood after years or generations of experience. For this story, we combined our own expertise with that of dozens of residents to create insiders' guides to some of our greatest neighborhoods. So dog-ear pages, use these maps, and get exploring!

Top Singles 2011: Where's the Love?

With our Top Singles along for the ride, we search for romance in this modern age.

These days, some people’s idea of romance is turning off their BlackBerry at dinner. But we wanted to know what ever happened to the art of letter writing, hand holding, and door opening. So we explored this idea by photographing 20 of Baltimore’s hottest singles in the most beautiful spaces in the city. (We think the glamorous locales suit them.) We also asked our singles how they’ve kept romance alive, and polled local celebrities about their favorite love stories. Finally, we dug up some old school romantic traditions we would like to see make a comeback.
