Visitors to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore can get a glimpse of new animals that have joined the facility this summer. Zoo officials say a new Kirk's dik-dik calf named Maddie was born in May and is now on display with her mother, Gwen. They are a tiny antelope found primarily in eastern Africa. There's another calf that was born recently to the sitatunga herd, named Pithos. The swamp antelope did not bond immediately with his mother, so zoo keepers say they had to take over feeding duties for the calf. The zoo also has acquired a female African-crested porcupine, which was introduced to a male already at the zoo. Zoo officials say the two have become "very comfortable" with each other.

E sther P. Brooks, a longtime office manager and secretary at Sharon Baptist Church, where she had been a member for 70 years, died June 27 of throat cancer at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. She was 83.
