<description>Carroll County is looking to save $3 million with layoffs that could affect as many as 18 employees. Commissioner Dean L. Minnich of Westminster said Wednesday night that while the county's budget staff recommended laying off 18, half of those will have the opportunity of being reassigned to other jobs. "It was the drop in income from the state that caused this," Minnich said. The Carroll County work force has been reduced by 12 percent since the summer. The layoffs go into effect Feb. 3.

<description>Pfc. Christopher Pfeiffer, 20, a Westminster soldier accused of deserting his Army unit, is slowly making his way home after paperwork problems threatened to strand him in Kuwait a second time. Pfeiffer's superiors notified him last week that he might be discharged from the Army. They said he failed to return to his unit after coming home over the summer on authorized leave to take care of his sick wife and newborn daughter. Pfeiffer's family said he did everything he could to contact his chain of command and either further extend his leave or make travel arrangements back to Afghanistan. Early this week, Army officials arranged to send Pfeiffer back to Fort Richardson, Alaska, where his fate will be decided. Pfeiffer left Bagram, Afghanistan, to fly to Kuwait, then Germany, and then on to Alaska, said his mother-in-law, Theresa Mwimbwa. But when he tried to board a plane Tuesday morning to Germany, he was told he couldn't go any farther. He was cleared Wednesday to leave Kuwait. Mwimbwa said she was unsure when he would arrive in Alaska. Pfeiffer was stuck at the Kuwait airport from Sept. 14 until Nov. 3, attempting to board a plane to Afghanistan.

<description>Two men were seriously burned Friday in a blaze at a recreational fire pit in Keymar in Carroll County. According to the Maryland fire marshal, about 20 members of the Taneytown Volunteer Fire Company responded to a call in the 7500 block of Middleburg Road shortly after 8 p.m. Friday. They found three people suffering from burns from a flash fire that is believed to have been caused by poured gasoline. Police and fire officials said that five people had been sitting around the backyard fire pit. Two men were seriously burned and flown by Maryland State Police to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. A 14-year-old girl was treated for minor burns at the Carroll Hospital Center. According to state police spokesman Greg Shipley, a quantity of suspected narcotics was also found. The incident remains under investigation.
