Franklin & Marshall women's coach Lauren Paul, a 1999 McDonogh graduate and Reisterstown native, was named the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association's Coach of the Year in NCAA Division III. In her first season as a head coach, Paul guided the Diplomats to this year's NCAA Division III national championship with an 11-10 win over Salisbury. The victory capped a 21-1 season and a championship season in which F&M avenged its two most recent losses - the 2008 championship game loss to Hamilton and a regular-season loss to Salisbury that ended the Diplomats' 35-game home winning streak.

Johns Hopkins alumnus Brian Voelker, who coached the Pennsylvania men to two NCAA tournament appearances in the past seven seasons, left the Quakers on Monday to become head coach at Drexel. Penn was 7-6 overall this season and 3-3 in the Ivy League. Before joining the Quakers, Voelker was coach and assistant general manager for the Baltimore Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse. He previously served for five seasons as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Johns Hopkins. Voelker graduated from Hopkins in 1991 as a three-time All-American.

UMBC women's lacrosse coach Kelly Berger announced that Tony Giro, who spent last season as a volunteer on the Retrievers' staff, has been named assistant coach and defensive coordinator. "I'm excited about having Tony on staff," Berger said. "I feel he has many different contributions to make to this program, and I know he has the drive to make UMBC what it needs to be." Last season, Giro assisted primarily on the defensive end, developing game plans and schemes for practices and games. UMBC's backfield led the America East and ranked 12th in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game (10.9) and second in the conference in scoring defense with a 9.88 goals-against average, nearly a three-goal improvement from 2008. "I'm honored that Kelly has brought me back to be a part of UMBC women's lacrosse," Giro said. "We're looking forward to making this program a point of pride for the university and the community." Giro has also served as the coach for one of the premier club lacrosse programs in the country, Maryland and D.C. 2010 Black, since 2004, leading the squad to four straight Galaxy National Championship games, with titles in each of the past two seasons. Before joining UMBC, Giro was part of the coaching staff that led the Mount Hebron High girls lacrosse team to four consecutive state championships and a No. 1 national ranking from 2003 to 2006.

Washington Bayhawks Goalie Chris Garrity was named MLL Defensive Player of the Week for his performance Saturday night against the Long Island Lizards. Washington relied on Garrity, of Annapolis, to keep its playoff hopes alive. Saving 13 of 20 shots, the veteran goalie held the Lizards to a season-low seven goals. He has played five games this season and has a .533 save percentage. The award marks the third time in Garrity's career that he has earned weekly honors. This is the second consecutive week a Bayhawks player has been recognized. Last week Danny Glading was named Rookie of the Week for his two-goal, three-assist performance against the Chicago Machine.
