Thirty years ago I invited a cute boy to a high school dance. I remember it so clearly- the nerves, the fear, the determination (I wanted to go to that dance!) the competition (another girl wanted to ask him but I got there first.)

I cornered him backstage at DBP (literally, I backed him into a corner behind the flats) during a drama club rehearsal. He said “Sure, ok.”

Happy anniversary, Boccio.

Parents who are tethered to their children continue to hover over the graduate admissions process — and beyond. They routinely swarm business school tours in the fall and admittance weekends in the spring. Some even show up at law school recruitment fairs, minus the child.

Spirit of Halloween Past

I used to love Halloween. I never got into it a much as some others but I’d dress up, trick or treat, go to parties, even hosted a party or two.

When my kids were little I liked coming up with costumes. I bought my fair share from the store but I made a few myself that I was proud of.

Each year the Cub Scouts would make tombstones and they’d be displayed on our lawn, located on a well-traveled road.

As my kids get older my interest is waning. It doesn’t help that we’re lucky to get two kids trick or treating (due to that well-traveled road- despite being across from one the most trick-or-treated parts of town, no one crosses the street!) In fact last year we had zero. We don’t even carve pumpkins anymore. I have a plastic jack-o-lantern with a nightlight inside that I stick in the window. Whee.

Tomorrow I can focus on Thanksgiving- that’s a holiday I can get behind! Somehow it hasn’t become a purely commercialized occasion like Halloween and Christmas have. No costumes, no candy, no gifts. Just family, friends, and food of course.

Technical difficulties. No need to stand by.

I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m having WordPress widget issues. Might be a corrupted database, but the bottom line is I lost a bunch of code and while I can find it and fix it I don’t have time to find and fix it. No one looks at the sidebars, anyway.
