Almost a year after their first album, ‘This was not Our Greatest Endeavour,’ Lower Lands released their second album, ‘Growing Pains,’ on the 5th of May, under I Am Mighty Records.

It’s been 2 years since Benji Inkley (guitar), Paul Howells (guitar), Jacob Jarvis (bass) and Sam Girling (drums) formed the band from the humble confines of their college class room. But in this short span of time the boys from Lincoln, UK are gaining a fast growing fan base. And why wouldn’t they? With their headstrong attitude to simply do what they love and keep things real, they only amplify the appeal of their vibrant music and ever-relatable lyrics.

We had the opportunity of catching up with these guys on their musical journey, their influences, and aspirations to take over the world, Michael Jackson style:

1. Hello! Briefly tell us how the band came together.
Yo! 3 dudes listened to Reuben and decided they wanted to be Jamie Lenman. A 4th dude heard about this and jumped straight out of his old band into this one.

2. You’re a relatively young band, in age and with reference to the when your musical career began. Does your fast gaining popularity intimidate you?
It’s definitely surprising! We had no idea what kind of reaction stuff like the video was going get. So when people are sharing it and talking about it, it still sweeps us off our feet a little bit.

3. Where do you see the band in 2 years time?
Outselling Michael Jackson then all getting addicted to crystal meth.

4. What was the most challenging part in creating the EP?
Getting the most out of having NO money whatsoever.

5. Your previous EP ‘This Was Not Our Greatest Endeavour,’ is a great album. How would you say you have grown musically, as a band in the past two years?
Thanks! We’ve grown so much and will continue to grow as musicians and people. We all started off at one point and now our lives and influences are branching out and it’s definitely having an effect on the music. (Hopefully for the better!)

6. How have things changed for you got signed from ‘I Am Mighty Records.’?
We’re able to tackle a lot more stuff at once. It’s been great getting I Am Mighty and some other people involved with what we’re doing because we can sort of do everything at once now, whereas before it was like “Right, we can’t do ANYTHING other than focus on this one thing.”

7. I am sure, that there are a lot of people out there vouching for you. What would you like to say to all the music lovers out there?
Do something because you want to do it, not because you think you have to.

Currently, the band is on tour with other awesome acts such as Hawthorne Heights and Burn the Fleet. So try and catch them on their live set while you can.

What I really enjoy about my job here is having the first listen to an album before it comes out, and then being able to introduce it to music lovers. And I feel privileged to have been able to listen to and announce the release of “Wait for the Siren,“ by Project 86 (P86) which is coming out tomorrow, August 21st, 2012.

The band from California can be widely classified as rock, alternative and post-hardcore. It came about in 1996 and with time and age it has ripened, creating music that does not just make a sound or spill a melody but produces an atmosphere, a theatrical performance in the mind of a listener, simply with sonic waves.

Fueling the evolution of sound, their 8th album is headstrong, fierce and emotionally charged and the boys of P86 are confident about the final product. Andrew Schwab (vocalist and primary song writer) states that, “On this record I was really able to take the reins of the creative process in a direction I was passionate about. I was able to write songs that pushed me to grow as an artist.”

In December 2011 the band ran the Kickstarter Campaign which enabled them, with the help of their fans to raise funds to record and produce the album. To celebrate the support they were given, P86 have been offering a free MP3 download of their first single from the album, ‘Fall, Goliath, Fall.’ It is a brilliant track, of course, but merely an appetizer for the main course of an album.

The celtic feel and drumming in this opening track leaves a lasting impression that gets carried forward through the preceding tracks. The track is followed by anthem-like ‘SOTS,’ and ‘Omerta’s Sons,’ that have a spirited and motivating vibe. The rage in songs like, ‘The Crossfire Gambit,’ is almost passionate and the growls and the shreds are unbeatable.

As Schwab sings in ‘New Transmission,’ to pen the lyrics of this album he had been, ”Tracing my steps to right back where it all began,“ to uncover various aspects of his past. ‘Avalantia’ and ’ Defector’ are melodious and beautiful while the ‘Ghost of Easter Rising’ takes beauty and melody to a whole other level making it by far my favorite song in the album. Schwab explains that the ,”military themes and Celtic instrumentation on the record,” are inspired by some of the findings from his past. “I have Irish ancestors who fought and died in the civil war as a part of the Irish Brigade.” The tracks also cover themes of humanity, brotherhood, togetherness and hope. Finally, rounding up the album, is the title track, ‘Wait For The Siren.’

Schwab has a fire in his voice that matches the resilience of the lyrics written and this has been clear through the previous works of P86. And he does not play down the power of his voice while summoning sirens for the current album. with regards to the change in the band’s sound, Schwab says confidently, “We captured the spirit that attracted people to our band long ago, with a whole new approach to the sonics.”

‘Wait For the Siren,’ was produced by Steve Wilson (Juliana Theory, Jonezetta) and Andrew Schwab and engineered by Steve Blackmon. It features guest appearances from talented musicians: Bruce Fitzhugh (Living Sacrifice), Rocky Gray (Evanescence), Brian “Head” Welch (Korn, Love and Death), Andrew Welch (Disciple), Blake Martin (Plea for Purging) and The Wedding.

Additionally, the men behind the music of the album include the new band members, Scott Davis on drums, Dustin Lowry on guitar and Mikee “Norman” Williams on bass, who have gained much respect from fans, fitting right into P86 to reinvent and push the band forward. The band is currently on tour promoting their latest release.

I think the band has definitely changed positively, and their sound may be new, but their brilliance is not. If you’re still unfamiliar with P86, give their new album a listen and work your way backwards through their discography. Disappointment is highly unlikely.
