I've been going easy on the God stuff lately. Hell, we atheists can get mighty tiresome, too. But this video is significant. I'm not a big Rachel Maddow fan - I find her excessive snark off-putting and doubt she's helping anyone over to the left - but she books terrific guests. Frank Schaeffer's wonderful book (Crazy for God. Read it. You'll love it.) explores the early days of the evangelical movement from the inside, with tenderness and objectivity, and sheds light on the type of thinking it espouses and fiercely protects. It's also very, very funny. Frank never pulls punches, as you'll see.

"Scary" Doesn't Come Close

Joel convinced me to try skydiving yesterday. It was terrifying. Really. I'm glad I did it, though I'm not sure I'll go back any time soon. Statistics: we did a tandem jump (each strapped to an instructor) from 13,000 feet. Free fall at 120mph for 7,000 feet (45 seconds of shrieking insanity), at which point I pulled the chute and it got very slightly less terrifying for the next 6,000 feet. The scenery was breathtaking (over Davis, CA), but who saw it? The "pucker moment": watching the person before me fling themselves out the open door - that's when I thought I just might have made a very bad decision. As I was pushed to the door myself, my legs dangling outside, well...the rest is between me and the instructor, who's sworn to secrecy. I've never been so glad to land on my ass in a pile of gravel.

The picture shows what I look like after being scared beyond belief. The video is a clip from the company's promo tape. Trust me, I wasn't grinning like these idiots. I was trying not to have a coronary.

We did it AGAIN! With your help, I rode every mile and LifeCycle raised $10.5 million this year. I had even more fun this time – it just keeps getting better – and I couldn’t have done it without your support. My seven days outside, biking through beautiful California, was humbling, exhausting, inspiring, and breathtaking all over again.

I’ll be posting some notes and pictures this weekend on the blog and will let you know when they’re up (this one's from King City on Day 2). Also, this year I took about an hour of video from the bike, in camp, and at the rest stops; as soon as I can figure out my Mac movie software, I’ll publish them as well.

Joel and I have decided to take next year off and return for the 10th anniversary of Lifecycle in June 2011. If you’ve ever considered being a part of the most amazing cycling adventure in the country – yes, I’ll say it! – or even if you haven’t, talk to me about it. I’d love to turn some of you donors into riders or roadies or support crew or cheering sign-wavers in LA at the finish line.
