Greetings Gamernation. As I said, and was completely serious, on the most recent episode of the Real Basement Dweller’s Podcast “Interview with a Goblin”, we are having a contest. The contest is as follows we want you to write an interesting short fan fiction about how The Pseudonym lost his pants at Magfest 2013. The best story will be chosen by us and will be read on a future Fan Fiction Theatre segment. The winner can either read his or her story dramatically, or have us do it that will be the choice of the winner. That’s not all, the winner will also receive a really cool Pint Glass beautifully laser etched with our logo to be the envy of all of your drinking buddies.

Guidelines:

1. The short fan fiction should be just that, a short story that wouldn’t take more than 10-15 minutes to read out loud even with slow dramatic reading.

2. Keep it clean, that’s not to say you can’t get a little PG-13 but I don’t want curses to be every other word, I truly believe curses can be used very well in funny situations but when it is every other word not so much.

3. This is not hard core slash fiction people, I do not want a Harlequin or 50 Shades of Grey type story, but I am not against shipping as long as it is not too over the top.

4. We are looking for different types and genres whatever you feel will be a fun short story to be read aloud dramatically, whether it be epic Fantasy RPG inspired, Sci-Fi, Noire, Drama, Comedy, etc. The sky is the limit, to an extent of course.

5. The deadline will be February 28, 2013 giving you plenty of time to write your stories and submit them.

6. Submitting them can be done one of many ways, first you can post them to our forum here if you don’t mind having other members of the gamernation read them. Or you can email them to Drakaunus@willwork4money.net once submitted in one of these two ways that will be your final submission there will be no takesy backsey’s people. Be sure to include your forum handle so we can identify the winner on the forums, only one submission per person naturally.

The elements you will use are as follows:

Location: Magfest 2013
Main Character: The Pseudonym
Plot: How he lost his pants

Anything and everything else will be up to your discretion. So get those creative juices flowing and we’ll see you on the other side.

Platform – iPhone

This week X-Men: The Arcade Game went on sale for $.99 in the Apple App Store on the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. I grew up at the beach, and a major part of my geekdom stemmed from gathering up soda cans from trashbins, trading them in for a ton of quarters, and hanging out in the local arcade at the boardwalk. I spent many of my summer days as an arcade rat throughout the 90′s – which was, in my mind, a much better time for arcades and arcade games in general. For one thing, 90% of the games were still only a quarter. The other main benefit was that there was just a better selection of games to choose from. Most arcades today basically give you the same few things: a shooter or three, a few driving games, and a fighting game or two. This wasn’t untrue in the 90′s; even then you had your staples. Most arcades had your fighters and drivers (Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, Cruisin USA and other classic racers), but they also had more actual GAMES. Arcades I go into these days are dominated by things where the object is to win prizes or tickets, games of skill as opposed to your classic arcade boxes. My arcade had classics like Samurai Showdown, TRON, Captain Commando, Narc, Knights of the Round, Rampage, Robotron 2084, and it even had the old 8-Man arcade game for the anime. Standing proudly above these you always had at least one of what I consider the holy trinity of co-op games though. The Simpsons, TMNT, and X-Men arcade games. My arcade had all three, although one was typically always broken or occupied. The X-Men Arcade Game had a few different models, with boxes supporting anywhere from 2-6 players. I was fortunate enough to have a box supporting all 6, allowing for the potential of a great multiplayer experience; an experience which stole much of my money over the years. I tell you all this so that you can imagine my excitement then when I found it on the Apple App Store sales page for under a dollar. I immediately downloaded it and loaded it up on my phone.

My first moments playing the game were of general disappointment and regret. What was this horrible game I was playing? The arcade game had always been hard so that you would keep pumping quarters in to continue (in fact I never remember really ever getting past the third stage), but this was ridiculous. The main problem I encountered is the buttons. They are all located on the touch screen. Now the iPhone has a fairly large screen for a phone; but the directional pad takes up an entire corner, and the attack, jump, and power buttons take up another. This meant that both of my thumbs took up about a quarter of the overall screen. Now mix the inability to see part of the screen with the unresponsiveness of the buttons, and I was dying at an alarming rate. It’s not that there is a delay or anything; it’s just that it’s not an actual button that you are pressing, so if the phone decides that you just did a slide instead of a jab your character doesn’t jump/punch/live. At this point, I was beginning to think that perhaps I should have waited and purchased it for my iPad when I got home. On a larger screen, neither of these problems would really exist, or at least they would be drastically minimized.

Ten minutes later, things weren’t actually so bad. The problems that detract from the game play in the beginning are all things that you adapt too rather quickly as the game progresses, albeit after of a bunch of deaths (typically quick, violent deaths). Another bonus is that you have unlimited continues, so in the end if you run into a point where you zigged but the game thought you zagged and you get beaten to hell, it’s not really all that devastating. I think the cherry on top that made this game for me was the level select feature. Once you’ve been to a level, you can always jump back to it from the menu, so if you have to leave the game you don’t have to completely start from scratch every time you sign back in. That, along with about five different difficulty settings adding much more replay value, I give this game an enthusiastic seal of approval. For an older port it stands the test of time, and the good attributes definitely cancel out all the bad. For $.99 you just can’t go wrong, especially if you get it for the IPAD.
