Manitoba’s Niyah Becker Returns to Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team for Olympic Pre-Qualifying Camp

Canada Basketball has announced that Winnipeg’s Niyah Becker has been named to the Senior Women’s National Team training camp roster as preparations continue for the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament 2026 and the Road to LA 2028.

The Winnipeg native is one of 17 athletes invited to attend Canada’s national team training camp from July 18–25 in Victoria, British Columbia, where the squad will continue preparations ahead of this summer’s international competition.

As part of the week-long camp, Canada will face the reigning NCAA champion UCLA Bruins in an exhibition game on July 22 during the W’HOOP IT UP showcase at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre before travelling to Guadalajara, Mexico, for the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament, scheduled for August 17–23.

The tournament marks the opening step on the Road to LA 2028, with the tournament champion advancing to the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in 2028.

For Niyah, the invitation represents another milestone in a basketball journey that began in Winnipeg and has taken her around the world. She developed her game through Manitoba’s basketball community, competing at Vincent Massey Collegiate along with local club programs before earning selection to the Manitoba’s Provincial Team Program, where she represented the province at the Canadian National Championships culminating with a Bronze Medal at the 2017 Canada Games hosted in Winnipeg. Her success at the provincial level led to opportunities with Canada Basketball’s age-group national teams, laying the foundation for an outstanding collegiate, professional and international career.

Following a standout high school career, she began her NCAA career at the University of Utah before transferring to Wake Forest University, where she graduated in 2023 after becoming one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s premier forwards.

Professionally, Becker has established herself as one of Canada’s emerging international players. Since graduating from Wake Forest, she has competed professionally in Slovenia, Spain, Latvia and Japan,

Internationally, Becker has represented Canada for nearly a decade. She has competed with Canada’s U18 Women’s National Team, represented Canada at the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Thailand, earned multiple selections to the Senior Women’s National Team, helped Canada capture the bronze medal at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, and now returns once again as Canada builds toward the 2028 Olympic Games.

Canada Basketball’s Victoria camp follows last month’s national team gathering in Montreal and brings together a talented mix of Olympians, World Cup veterans, AmeriCup athletes and emerging players from Canada’s high-performance pathway.

Canada currently sits No. 7 in the FIBA Women’s World Rankings, presented by Nike, and will be looking to build momentum heading into this summer’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament.

Cieran O'Hara Begins Professional Career with Newcastle Knights

Cieran O'Hara has signed his first professional basketball contract with the Newcastle Knights for the 2026–27 British Championship Basketball (BCB) season.

The 6-foot-6 forward begins the next chapter of his basketball career after a successful U SPORTS career with the University of Manitoba Bisons, where he developed into one of the program's most dependable frontcourt players.

O'Hara earned a reputation for his relentless effort, physical style of play, and commitment to doing the little things that help teams win. During the 2025–26 season, he averaged 6.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, emerging as one of the Canada West conference's top rebounders while providing consistent interior defence and leadership for the Bisons.

The opportunity to compete professionally in the United Kingdom marks an exciting milestone for O'Hara as he takes his game to the international stage.

"I'm incredibly excited for the opportunity to represent Newcastle and contribute everything I have to this team," said O'Hara. "Having just finished playing with the University of Manitoba, I'm ready to compete, grow, and push this team toward another championship in whatever way I can."

Known for his toughness, rebounding ability, and team-first mentality, O'Hara earned this opportunity through years of dedication and continuous improvement. His willingness to embrace every role and compete on every possession made him a respected teammate throughout his collegiate career and has prepared him well for the professional game.

His signing with the Newcastle Knights adds to a growing list of Manitoba Bisons men's basketball alumni who will be competing professionally overseas during the 2026–27 season. Former teammates Daren Watts has signed with the Metz Canonniers in France, while Mason Kraus and Simon Hildebrandt have both signed professional contracts in Germany.

Tanah Becker to Represent Canada at FIBA 3x3 U21 Nations League in Paraguay

Manitoba basketball will once again be represented on the international stage as Winnipeg's Tanah Becker has been named to Canada's U21 Women's 3x3 National Team for the FIBA 3x3 U21 Nations League 2026 – Americas South, taking place July 20–26 in Asunción, Paraguay.

Tanah is one of six athletes selected to represent Canada in the week-long international competition, where the nation's top young 3x3 players will compete through six tournaments over seven days in pursuit of a berth at the 2026 FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup in Wuhan, China.

The Nations League format features six one-day tournaments, with teams earning standings points after each stop. The nation finishing atop the overall standings following the sixth day of competition will earn qualification to the 2026 FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup, scheduled for September in China.

Tanah brings valuable experience to the Canadian squad, having previously represented Canada at the age-group level. Canada Basketball noted that she, along with Taliyah Henderson, Olivia Leung and Taija Sta Maria, provides the team with significant international experience, while the roster combines offensive firepower with defensive versatility.

Canada opens competition on Monday, July 20, with both the women's and men's teams taking on Argentina in the opening stop of the tournament. All games will be streamed live on the FIBA 3x3 YouTube Channel.

Tanah's selection continues an outstanding stretch for Manitoba basketball on the international stage. Earlier this year, fellow Winnipeg athletes Emily Potter and Niyah Becker represented Canada at the FIBA Women's AmeriCup before both earning invitations to Canada's Senior Women's National Team training camp as preparations continue for the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament.

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce the High-Performance Camp from Monday, August 24 to Thursday, August 27, 2026, for boys and girls ages 9 to 15!

Head coaches Randy Kusano, Victor Lee, and Katrina Rogan, along with guest coaches, will lead the girls' camp on court 3. The boys' camp sessions will be led by head coaches Dan Becker and Keenan Benarroch, along with guest coaches, on courts 1 and 2.

The cost of the camp is $140.00 per player, which includes the camp, insurance and a Basketball Manitoba t-shirt.

The registration deadline is FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 2026, at 12:00 pm or when the camp sells out. The camps sell out each year, so register now to avoid disappointment.

LEAD COACH BIOS:

Randy Kusano was the winningest coach in the history of high school basketball in Manitoba. His high school teams won three MHSAA (Manitoba High School Athletic Association) AAAA Provincial Championships provincial titles and 11 conference titles, and he coached in 15 AAAA Final Fours in his 34 years coaching with the Oak Park Raiders in Winnipeg before retiring from teaching in 2010. A University of Manitoba graduate, Kusano is a current fully certified NCCP Level 3 coach with nearly 25 years of CIS coaching experience as an assistant with the Bison men’s and women's basketball program.

Randy has been involved in basketball as a player and coach for over forty years. He developed his love for basketball at Norberry Junior High in St. Vital, playing for Hall of Famer Dennis Alvestad. He moved on to Glenlawn Collegiate and finally to the University of Manitoba. Randy was a member of three consecutive Canadian Junior Men’s championship teams from 1971-1973. In 1976 he was a member of the first Manitoba team to win a National University championship in basketball, the University of Manitoba Bisons.

After his university years were done, he continued playing with the Nicolett Inn Senior men’s team that captured their first National Senior Men’s Championship in 1979. The University of Manitoba Junior Men and Nicolett Inn Senior men’s teams were later inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame.

Randy’s coaching career began with the University of Manitoba Junior Bisons in 1974 and continued there until 1976. He has coached high school basketball for the past thirty-four years, thirty-two as head coach of the Varsity Boys program at Oak Park High School.

Over his 34 years at Oak Park, Randy developed the dominant high school program of its era, going to 15 Final Fours and winning 3 AAAA Provincial Championships. During this time, he has helped to develop more than twenty-five players who have gone on to play at the Canadian College or CIS level. Randy has also served as an assistant coach at the University of Manitoba for fifteen years.

Randy has also coached numerous Manitoba Provincial teams as head coach and as an assistant coach at the Canada Games, Western Canada Games, and National Championships.

Victor Lee is an emerging coach within Manitoba's basketball system with experience across school, club, and provincial development environments. A graduate of Oak Park High School, Lee returned to the program as an assistant coach before assuming head coaching duties for the varsity boys team ahead of the 2024–2025 season.

At the club level, Lee serves as the head coach of Evolve Basketball's U18 female program, following a season as an assistant coach. Under his leadership, the program has achieved significant competitive success. His coaching approach emphasizes team culture, accountability, and long-term athlete development, with a strong focus on creating positive learning environments. Lee is currently completing his Bachelor of Education at the University of Manitoba and remains actively engaged in basketball development through coaching, volunteer involvement, and service within Basketball Manitoba.

Katrina Rogan is an experienced coach with a strong background across school, club, and provincial development environments. She currently serves as the Head Coach of the Vincent Massey Collegiate Junior Varsity Girls program, where she focuses on building confident, skilled athletes within a positive and competitive team culture. In addition, Rogan is an assistant coach with the Junior Bisons Prairie Elite Basketball League program and is actively involved with the Canada Basketball Junior Academy in Winnipeg

At the club level, Rogan is the head coach of the Evolve Basketball U15 girls program, working closely with athletes on skill development, basketball IQ, and long-term progression. A former Manitoba Provincial Team athlete, she competed at both the 15U and 17U levels before continuing her playing career with the University of Winnipeg. Rogan brings a player-centred approach shaped by recent high-level playing experience, emphasizing development, confidence, and a strong connection to the game.

Dan Becker has been an active player and coach for over 30 years at all levels of the game. His playing history began as a standout player at Fort Richmond Collegiate, which led him to play NCAA Division 1 basketball at the University of Colorado. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing Degree, Dan continued his basketball career, playing 12 years for a variety of teams and leagues all over the globe, including stints with the Winnipeg Thunder and the Winnipeg Cyclone. In the summer of 1991, Dan was invited to try out for the Denver Nuggets and Indiana Pacers of the NBA. Dan's playing career also saw him represent Team Canada in the late 80s and early 90s on various Student and Training National Teams, including the World Universiade Games in Germany and 2 Jones Cups in Taipei, Taiwan.

As a coach, Dan has worked with players at many different levels. Dan completed his NCCP Level 4 education at the National Coaching Institute in Winnipeg. He assisted at the CIS men's level from 2000 to 2004 and took the interim head coaching duties in 2004-05 with the University of Manitoba Men's Program. Over this same time period, Dan coached a number of Basketball Manitoba's Provincial Teams at the 15U and 17U levels, winning a bronze medal at the 2004 17U. In 2014, Dan led the Manitoba 17U Male Provincial team to their first-ever Gold Medal at the National Championship. Dan was an active coach in the Canada Basketball Centre for Performance Program and an instructor at the Nike All-Canada Camp. Dan has also served as the Basketball Technical Advisor for three feature films; ESPN's 'A Season on the Brink' in 2001, 'Full of It' in 2005, and “Champions” in 2023.

From 2005 to 2010, Dan worked with Randy Kusano and the Oak Park Raiders Varsity male' Program, winning two Provincial Championships and making five consecutive Final Four appearances. Dan coached the University of Winnipeg Collegiate Varsity male team during the 2010-11 season. Dan has also coached grassroots programs in the school system, RSL, WMBA, and Peg City leagues.

Dan is the Head Coach for many of the Basketball Manitoba High-Performance programs and is also a Learning Facilitator and Coach Evaluator in the new NCCP coaching education program.

In 2013, Dan was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in the Player category in recognition of his tremendous playing career. Dan currently resides in Winnipeg, is married and has 3 children.

Keenan Benarroch has been involved in basketball for nearly a decade, both as a player and a coach. He played for the University of Manitoba Bisons from 2014 to 2017.

Following his playing career, Keenan served as an assistant coach for the University of Manitoba Men’s Basketball team during the 2017–2018 season. During this time, he also worked as a program coordinator for the Junior Bisons. He later joined the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Women’s Basketball team as an Assistant Coach, a role he held from 2019 to 2023. In the 2021–2022 season, Keenan played a key role in helping the team achieve a perfect 20–0 record, capturing both the OUA and U SPORTS National Championships.

Keenan has been deeply involved in provincial and grassroots basketball. In 2021, he served as the Head Coach for the Downtown Toronto Centre for Performance and as an Apprentice Coach with the Ontario 15U Provincial Girls team. He has also worked extensively in athlete development as a Head Coach of a 14U boys team and as a coach within the Junior Academy program in Winnipeg.

In 2020, Keenan worked as a Video and Performance Analyst for Canada Basketball’s 3x3 Men’s National Team during the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, where he analyzed game footage and provided performance insights to support team success.

Currently, Keenan is pursuing a Bachelor of Education at the University of Manitoba while coaching the JV boys team at Fort Richmond Collegiate and assisting with the University of Manitoba Bisons program.

Mason Kraus Signs First Overseas Professional Contract in Germany

WINNIPEG, MB — Manitoba basketball continues to make its mark on the international stage as former University of Manitoba Bisons standout and current Winnipeg Sea Bears guard Mason Kraus has signed his first overseas professional basketball contract with EPG Baskets Koblenz in Germany for the 2026–27 season.

Kraus joins one of Germany's respected professional clubs after establishing himself as one of the most accomplished players in recent Manitoba Bisons history. His signing represents the next step in a basketball journey built on consistent improvement, elite defensive play, and leadership at every level.

A four-time Canada West All-Star, Kraus became just the eighth player in Manitoba Bisons men's basketball history to earn conference all-star recognition in four different seasons. His accolades include All-Rookie Team honours in 2022, Third Team All-Star selections in 2023 and 2026, and First Team All-Star honours in 2025.

Over his U SPORTS career, the Winnipeg product averaged 13.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, and over 31 minutes per game, developing into one of the conference's premier two-way guards. During his final university season in 2025–26, Kraus scored a season-high 29 points against Mount Royal on January 10 and grabbed 10 rebounds against Brandon on February 12, showcasing the versatility that has become his trademark.

Kraus has gained valuable professional experience close to home with the Winnipeg Sea Bears after being selected in the 2025 Canadian Elite Basketball League U SPORTS Draft. Over two seasons with the club, he appeared in 20 CEBL games, providing energy, defensive intensity, and valuable depth while continuing his development alongside professional teammates.

His performance with the Sea Bears earned praise from Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault.

"Mason had a notable collegiate career and has shown he can defend and disrupt players at multiple positions," said Raimbault. "We're excited to support him as he takes the next step into his professional career."

Beyond the traditional five-on-five game, Kraus has also represented Canada internationally, earning selection to Canada's men's team for the 2025 FIBA U23 3x3 Nations League, further demonstrating his versatility and ability to compete at the highest levels.

Kraus now joins EPG Baskets Koblenz, where he will begin the next chapter of his career in one of Europe's strongest basketball nations. Germany has become a premier destination for Canadian players looking to establish themselves professionally, offering high-level competition and outstanding player development opportunities.

She is a native of Mississauga, Ontario, where she went to play at Queen's University and Royal Military College of Canada, becoming an OUA All-Star

She then enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces, where she continued her athletics career and built a high-level athletic and coaching résumé.

She competed in 3 World Military Games and over a dozen World Championships, captained the Canadian Armed Forces National Women’s Soccer Team, and coached at the international level with the CAF National Women’s Basketball program.

Since moving to Winnipeg in 2021, she’s spent time coaching with provincial programs and spent the last two years as Head Coach of the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers women’s basketball team.

She has completed a certificate in High Performance Coaching through the University of British Columbia. She is currently the assistant coach of the Queen's University Women's basketball program.

Daren Watts Begins Professional Career in France with Metz Canonniers

Former Manitoba Bisons standout Daren Watts has officially signed his first full overseas professional contract, joining the Metz Canonniers in Metz, France, for the 2026–27 season.

Watts will compete in Nationale Masculine 1 (NM1), France's third-highest professional division. Widely regarded as one of Europe's strongest developmental leagues, NM1 features a blend of experienced professionals, former top-division players, and emerging talent striving to reach France's highest levels of professional basketball.

The signing represents the next step in Watts' basketball journey following his first professional experience with the Winnipeg Sea Bears, where he earned an opportunity to train and compete through the Canadian Elite Basketball League's pathway for outstanding U SPORTS student-athletes. His move to France marks the beginning of his first full professional season overseas.

During an outstanding collegiate career with the University of Manitoba Bisons, Watts established himself as one of the program's premier guards. He surpassed the 1,000-point milestone, earned Canada West Second Team All-Star honours, and concluded his university career with an exceptional senior season, averaging 17.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.

Known for his dynamic scoring ability, perimeter shooting, athleticism, and relentless work ethic, Watts has earned this opportunity through years of dedication and continuous development. His commitment to improving every aspect of his game has positioned him well for the challenges and opportunities that await him in European professional basketball.

France has long served as an excellent launching point for Canadian players beginning their international careers, and a successful season with Metz could create opportunities to advance within the country's highly respected professional basketball system and beyond.

Winnipeg Sea Bears Re-Sign Jelani Watson-Gayle for Duration of 2026 Season

The Winnipeg Sea Bears today announced the club has signed guard Jelani Watson-Gayle for the 2026 Canadian Elite Basketball League season. Watson-Gayle previously played for Winnipeg during the Sea Bears' inaugural 2023 campaign and returns after three productive seasons of professional play overseas.

Watson-Gayle (6-1, 174 lbs, Fresno Pacific University; born: September 9, 1998, in London, United Kingdom) returns to Winnipeg after three seasons of professional play across the UK, Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Bulgaria. Most recently, he averaged 13.8 points, 6.6 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 36 games with Cherno More Ticha Varna of the Bulgarian NBL, shooting 41.4 per cent from three-point range and 81.2 per cent from the free throw line. He also appeared in three FIBA World Cup qualifying games for the British men's national team during the 2025-26 campaign.

"He was here for the inaugural season and he understands what this organization is building. Prior to his time in Bulgaria, Watson-Gayle put together one of his strongest professional seasons with Slavia Praha of the Czech Republic NBL in 2024-25, averaging 19.0 points, 4.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game across 25 games while shooting 49.7 per cent from two-point range. He has also represented Great Britain in EuroBasket competition, appearing in seven games across both qualifying rounds in 2025. Watson-Gayle began his professional career in 2022-23 with the Bristol Flyers of the British Basketball League, where he averaged 11.5 points, 3.4 assists and 3.1 rebounds across 41 games.

Watson-Gayle is no stranger to the Sea Bears or to Winnipeg. He was part of the franchise's inaugural 2023 roster, averaging 12.8 points, 3.4 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 20 games during the club's first CEBL season.

DEADLINE WEDNESDAY: Landmark Recreation Association Hosting 3-on-3 Outdoor Basketball Tournament July 24-26, 2026 for Ages 12-18+

The Landmark Recreation Association will host its 2026 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament from July 24 to 26, 2026, at the Landmark Arena in Landmark, Manitoba. The tournament will feature divisions for 12U, 15U, 18U, and 18 and Over, with male, female, and co-ed categories available. The entry fee is $75 per team.

Teams may carry a roster of up to five players, with a minimum of three players required. Each team is guaranteed four games, with games played using a 21-minute running time format or until the first team reaches 21 points.

Prize money will be awarded in each division, based on a minimum of four teams per division:

1st Place: $200
2nd Place: $150
3rd Place: $100

All registrations must be received by Wednesday, July 17, 2026. Payment can be made by e-transfer to landmarkrecfinance@gmail.com, with teams asked to include their team name in the message.

The tournament will follow structured 3-on-3 rules, including team foul limits, check-ball procedures, defensive possession after made baskets, and substitution rules designed to keep the games moving efficiently.

Teams interested in taking part are encouraged to register before the deadline and get ready for a competitive weekend of 3-on-3 basketball in Landmark.
