Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce the details for the annual Basketball Manitoba Awards set for Saturday, April 18, 2026, at the Sport Manitoba Courts and Alloway Hall at the Manitoba Museum in Winnipeg. The event will feature players and coaches from this past year who had outstanding seasons at the high school basketball level. The day features the boys and girls AAAA and A, AA, AAA Graduating All-Star Games and a formal event to announce and present the Manitoba Players of the Year, All-Manitoba Teams, Coaches of the Year, Carl Ridd, Chad Posthumus, Mike Spack, Jim Bulloch, Irv Hanec, Dennis Wilson, Ron Meyers, Donovan Gayle, Larry Marquardson, Matt Jonsson, Morris Glimcher and Lena Wenke Awards along with other special recognitions. The deadline to reserve your awards seats is noon on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.

Location for Presentations: Alloway Hall, Manitoba Museum, 190 Rupert Avenue, Winnipeg (AWARDS LOCATION MAP). Please note that due to the construction at the Manitoba Museum, you must use the Main Street entrance to enter the facility. Follow the signs off of Rupert Ave to find the entryway.

3:00 pm – All-Manitoba Awards Presentation at Alloway Hall at the Manitoba Museum - no cost to attend

Attending the Award Presentations at the Manitoba Museum will be free. People are still asked to reserve their space needs so event organizers can still plan for the numbers at the event. Reservations must be made in advance through the Basketball Manitoba website. A maximum of 425 seats are available - reserve yours today to avoid disappointment, as it always fills up! As part of the change to the pricing for attending the Awards, no food or refreshments will be provided following the formalities, as has been the case in the past.

The deadline to reserve tickets is Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at noon.

Basketball Manitoba will live stream all four All-Star Games from Sport Manitoba, PLUS the Basketball Manitoba Awards presentations on its LiveBasketball.ca website. The schedule for the day is in the above image. Each feed will go live just minutes before the game or award presentations begin. Players selected for the Graduating All-Star Games are asked to be at Sport Manitoba, 145 Pacific Ave, 30 minutes before their scheduled game and to bring BOTH their light AND dark school jerseys and shorts to the game. Players attending the Basketball Manitoba Awards presentations must reserve their space before noon on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.

Basketball Manitoba and Victory Vault Sweepstakes Partner to Launch New Fundraising Initiative in Manitoba on April 15, 2026

Basketball Manitoba and Victory Vault Sweepstakes have announced a new fundraising initiative to support amateur athletes and help address the rising cost of participation in basketball in Manitoba.

Launching in Manitoba on April 15, 2026, the Victory Vault Sweepstakes will offer Manitobans weekly chances to win cash prizes while directing ticket proceeds toward initiatives supporting young athletes and amateur sport organizations across the province.

The new initiative comes at a time when the cost of sport continues to be a growing barrier for many families. According to the 2024 Jumpstart State of Play Youth Report, 47 percent of people identified cost as the number one reason they do not participate in sport, making affordability the single largest barrier to play in Canada. Families are increasingly facing annual sport expenses that can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars per child, particularly in competitive programs.

Victory Vault Sweepstakes has been designed to help ease that burden by creating a new revenue stream for Manitoba’s Provincial Sport Organizations and their affiliated clubs. By generating additional funding, the program aims to help offset costs that might otherwise be passed on to athletes and their families, contributing to a more accessible and inclusive sport system across Manitoba.

Each week, participants can purchase sweepstakes tickets for a chance to win cash prizes. As part of the process, purchasers will be able to choose a participating Provincial Sport Organization (such as Basketball Manitoba) to support, so that every ticket sold directly benefits amateur sport in communities throughout Manitoba.

The initiative is being administered by Ascend Fundraising Solutions and is being launched in partnership with participating Manitoba Provincial Sport Organizations, including Athletics Manitoba, Baseball Manitoba, Basketball Manitoba, the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association, Manitoba Horse Council, Racquetball Manitoba, Sport Manitoba, and others.

THRiVE Basketball Academy Launches New Player Development Program

THRiVE Basketball Academy has announced the official launch of its new basketball player development program in Winnipeg, offering athletes from across Manitoba a structured training environment focused on skill development, game understanding, and character education.

Founded by Manoj Nowrang, THRiVE Basketball Academy is dedicated to supporting the development of well-rounded athletes through a balanced approach that combines a traditional work ethic with modern training methods. The academy aims to provide players with the tools needed to build confidence, discipline, and a deeper understanding of the game.

The new program will offer training opportunities for athletes at various stages of their basketball journey through four development pathways: Foundations, Advanced, Elite, and Next Level.

As part of the academy’s intake process, each athlete will begin with an Evaluation Session to help determine the most appropriate program placement and support a more personalized development experience.

Basketball's Colin Mark Named Sport Manitoba Canada Games Legacy Fund Volunteer of the Year

Basketball Manitoba has announced that longtime Manitoba basketball coach and educator Colin Mark (pictured above right with his Junior High Basketball Championship team) will be recognized by Sport Manitoba as part of its 2025 Night of Champions awards.

Colin is being honoured for his outstanding contribution to amateur sport through a lifetime of dedication to basketball, coaching, mentorship, and community leadership. Sport Manitoba’s annual Night of Champions celebrates the top athlete, team, coach, official, and volunteer of the year while recognizing the highest amateur sport achievements by Manitobans in 2025.

A lifelong educator and coach, Mark has dedicated 39 years to developing basketball in Manitoba. Since 1986 at Sergeant Park School, he has coached primarily junior high girls' basketball while building a values-based program centred on inclusion, mentorship, and excellence. His influence has extended far beyond the court and into generations of athletes, coaches, and officials across the province.

Over nearly four decades, Mark has built more than successful teams. He has helped create a culture where young people can grow, contribute, and feel a strong sense of belonging. His leadership is reflected in the many former players who later returned to coach, helping sustain a program rooted in continuity, mentorship, and community.

His impact has also extended into the broader school sport environment. Mark created opportunities such as a scorekeeper training program to ensure more students could be involved in the game, while his collaborative work across multiple sports helped establish Sergeant Park School as a strong model for both athletic excellence and positive community values.

His longstanding commitment is reflected in more than 39 years of service and an estimated 17,000-plus volunteer hours dedicated to coaching, mentorship, and program development. In 2025, Basketball Manitoba recognized Mark with the Mike Spack Lifetime Achievement Award, honouring his extraordinary commitment to the sport. He was also previously named Coach of the Year on four separate occasions in 1989-90, 1995-96, 2000-01, and 2001-02.

Sport Manitoba’s Night of Champions ceremony will take place on April 16, 2026, at the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. The invite-only event brings together award winners along with their families and friends to celebrate excellence in amateur sport. Each award recipient will receive a bursary to support their continued involvement in sport, and a commemorative banner featuring their name and award will be displayed at the Sport Manitoba facility.

Larry Marquardson Alumni Memorial 3x3 Basketball Tournament Set for April 25 at Sargent Park School

The Larry Marquardson Alumni Memorial Basketball Tournament organizing committee has announced the launch of the 1st Annual Larry Marquardson Alumni Memorial Basketball Tournament, scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Sargent Park School.

The one-day event will feature a 3-on-3 basketball tournament open to coed teams of three to five players, with participation available to individuals aged 16 and older. Organizers have indicated that all skill levels are welcome, with the tournament intended to bring together alumni, community members, and basketball supporters for a fun and inclusive day on the court.

In addition to game play, the event will include prizes, a canteen, and other activities throughout the day. Proceeds from the tournament will support the Larry Marquardson Memorial Basketball Award Fund.

Registration is $300 per team and will be accepted on a first come, first served basis, with a registration deadline of Thursday, April 16, 2026.

The Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame & Museum has updated its digital collection on its website featuring all the Winnipeg Sun / Winnipeg Free Press Top 10 high school boys and girls basketball player articles published since 1990. The annual feature showcases the top 10 boys and girls players in high school basketball as determined by a panel of coaches at the time. The publication has been a long tradition as part of the Manitoba March Madness and is now put together in one collection. The lists feature some current and soon to be Hall of Famers and those who went on to bigger things with basketball later in their playing careers.

REMINDER: 2026 Manitoba Provincial Team Tryouts Announced for May 8-10; Register Now

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce details on the 2026 Provincial Team Tryouts for the upcoming summer. The tryouts for the program will take place May 8-10 at the Sport Manitoba Courts (aka Canada Games Sport for Life Centre), 145 Pacific Avenue in Winnipeg, MB.

The 2026 Manitoba Provincial Team Program will be forming a total of six teams. The 15U and 17U male teams will represent Manitoba at the Canada Basketball National Championships hosted in Regina, Saskatchewan. The 15U and 17U female teams will represent Manitoba at the Canada Basketball National Championship, hosted in Sherbrooke, Quebec. The 14U teams will be a development group, travelling to tournaments and competitions in July. The ages for the teams will be 17U (born in 2009 or later), 15U (born in 2011 or later) and 14U (born in 2012 or later) at both the male and female levels. Details on the Manitoba Provincial Team coaching staff announced earlier this year can be found HERE.

The teams will be selected from the May 8-10 open tryouts, and any Manitoba resident in one of the defined age categories is eligible and welcome to try out. Once the teams are chosen, they will train and compete together through June, July, and early August. Information can be found HERE.

Basketball Manitoba is hosting additional open Manitoba Provincial Team Identification Camps. These Identification Camps are not the formal tryouts for the Manitoba Provincial Team program. They are identification opportunities for athletes living outside of Winnipeg, and are being offered to provide athletes with additional consideration from Provincial Team Coaches who will be present. REGISTRATION: Online preregistration is required (links below)
CHECK-IN: On-site check-in will begin 30 minutes before the first tryout per age category.
BRING A BASKETBALL: Players are asked to bring their own basketball (Female size 6, Male size 7)
TRYOUT FEE: $40.00 per person is due at the time of online registration (credit card or eTransfer payment options are available).
REVERSIBLE JERSEY: All registered players will receive and keep a 'Basketball Manitoba' reversible jersey
ARRIVAL TIME: Players should arrive at least 20 minutes early to the tryout sessions, dressed and ready to play
PROGRAM FEES: All players selected for one of the Provincial Teams will be assessed the $1,500 program fee for transportation, accommodations, meals and flight to the National Championships. The program fee also includes gear packages, training costs, and insurance. Basketball Manitoba subsidizes 50% of the total cost of the summer program. Additional fundraising, financial support programs, and payment options are available. Please note that this fee may change as the new Basketball Manitoa budget and finances are set heading into the spring.

All eligible players must fit into one of the following age divisions and have been a resident of Manitoba on or before February 1, 2026.

14U Female - born in 2012 or later
14U Male - born in 2012 or later
15U Female - born in 2011 or later
15U Male - born in 2011 or later
17U Female - born in 2009 or later
17U Male - born in 2009 or later

SPECIAL TRYOUT NOTES

Age Advancement
Basketball Manitoba allows a younger player to play up an age for a Provincial Team. Any younger-age athlete who wishes to try out for an older-age program is welcome to do so. After the first session, the older coaching staff and Selection Committee can decide whether the younger athlete will continue in the older tryouts or be asked to return to the younger tryouts. Any athlete looking to try out at an older age must contact Dan Becker first.

Northwestern Ontario Residents
Those residing in Northwestern Ontario (west of and including Thunder Bay) can try out once they have first contacted the Basketball Manitoba office and then received written clearance from Basketball Ontario. Contact Adam Wedlake first before proceeding.

Provincial Team Selection Policy
Updated in November 2023, the Basketball Manitoba Board of Directors passed a motion on a new Provincial Team Selection Policy. As part of our commitment to providing a transparent and equitable Provincial Team selection procedure, there is a need for a consistent policy to protect the integrity of the Provincial Team program and its coaches. Basketball Manitoba has moved the Provincial Team tryouts to late May, avoiding much of the club basketball season. Athletes selected on one of the Manitoba Provincial Teams will be expected to fully commit to the program for all practices, training sessions and competitions. Sea Bears Sign Mason Kraus and Kato Jaro as Part of CEBL Signing Day for 2026 Season

Winnipeg, MB, April 8,2026 — The Winnipeg Sea Bears today announce the signing of two stand out local student-athletes, Mason Kraus and Kato Jaro, as part of the 2026 Canadian Elite Basketball League Signing Day.

CEBL Signing Day replaces the former CEBL Draft model, and highlights the next wave of elite Canadian talent from U SPORTS and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association.

Kraus, a guard from the University of Manitoba Bisons, has averaged 13.4 points and 4.7 rebounds over 31.4 minutes per game in his U SPORTS career. During the 2025-26 season, he recorded a season-high 29 points against Mount Royal on Jan. 10, 2026, and pulled down 10 rebounds against Brandon on Feb. 12, 2026.

“Mason had a notable collegiate career and has shown he can defend and disrupt players at multiple positions,” said Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault. “We’re excited to support him as he takes the next step into his professional career.”

A U Sports Draft pick in 2025 for the Winnipeg Sea Bears, Kraus was named to Canada’s men’s roster for the 2025 FIBA U23 3×3 Nations League and was named an all-star four times (All-Rookie in 2022, Third Team in 2023, First Team in 2025, Third Team in 2026). He becomes just the eighth player in program history to receive conference all-status status of some form in four different seasons.

Jaro, a guard with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, averaged 9.7 points and 3.2 rebounds over 26.2 minutes per game in his collegiate career. In the 2025-26 season, he posted a season-high 31 points against Manitoba on Jan. 29, 2026, and recorded 10 assists against Alberta on Nov. 29, 2025. In 2025-2026, Jaro was named a Canada West Men's Basketball First Team All-Star and named a second-team all-Canadian.

“Kato had a great U Sports season," said Raimbault. “We're thrilled to have him with us this summer as he continues to develop his game.”

The addition of Kraus and Jaro reflects the Sea Bears’ continued commitment to developing and showcasing Manitoba talent at a professional level.

Identification Camp Dates and Locations

Winnipeg Based Identification Camp: Sunday, March 29, 2026, Sport For Life Centre (145 Pacific Ave, Winnipeg, MB
Brandon Based Identification Camp: Friday, April 17, 2026, Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School (1930 1st St, Brandon, MB)

Important Note

These Identification Camps are not the formal tryouts for the Manitoba Provincial Team program. They are identification opportunities for athletes living outside of Winnipeg, and are being offered to provide athletes with additional consideration from Provincial Team Coaches who will be present.

The formal Manitoba Provincial Team Tryouts will occur May 8-10, 2026, at the Sport Manitoba Courts in Winnipeg. The May tryouts are open to any Manitoba resident who meets the age requirements. Provincial Team Tryout details will be announced in early spring.

2026 Provincial Team Program Overview

The 2026 Manitoba Provincial Team Program will comprise six teams. The 15U and 17U teams will compete at the Canada Basketball National Championships. The 14U Male and Female teams are Developmental Provincial Teams and will participate in multiple tournaments throughout the summer.

National Championships

The Canada Basketball 15U and 17U National Championships will run August 3-8, 2026, and feature teams representing each of the ten provinces across Canada. The 15U and 17U female competitions will be held in Sherbrooke, QC, while the 15U and 17U male tournaments will be hosted in Regina, SK.

Selection Process and Summer Plans

Teams will be selected from the open tryouts in May. Any Manitoba resident who fits the age categories is eligible and welcome to try out. Once teams are selected, the provincial teams will train and compete through June and July, leading into their respective summer competition schedules.

The Manitoba Provincial Team Program is the premier player and coach development program in the province. The program attracts top players and coaches to represent Manitoba at national and international events. Check-in: On-site check-in will begin 20 minutes prior to the first session per age category. Players should arrive dressed and ready to play.
Bring a basketball: Players are asked to bring their own basketball (Girls size 6, Boys size 7)

WMBA Spring Skills Development Program Registration Now Open

Winnipeg Minor Basketball has announced its 9-week Spring Skills Development Program, offering players an opportunity to continue their development in a structured and supportive training environment this spring.

The program will begin the weekend of April 11-12, 2026, and run on Saturdays and Sundays through June 13-14 at Linden Woods Community Centre. The sessions will feature one-hour training blocks focused on building confidence, improving fundamental basketball skills, and strengthening overall gameplay.

According to WMBA, the program will be led by experienced coaches, including current university athletes, and is designed to provide a fun and encouraging setting for players to grow their skills on the court.

The program is open to both currently registered WMBA players and non-WMBA players, with registration limited to 20 participants per group.

Program fees are $95 for currently registered WMBA players and $125 for non-WMBA players.

Registration closes on Thursday, April 10, 2026. WMBA notes that spots are already beginning to fill.

The Spring Skills Development Program is intended to give players access to additional training opportunities during the spring season while supporting continued skill development and enjoyment of the game.

Welcome to the Manitoba High School 3x3 Basketball Championships!

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN: Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce the return of the Manitoba High School 3x3 Championships! The event will occur on Friday, April 24, 2026, at the Sport Manitoba Courts (aka Canada Games Sport for Life Centre). It will be open to high school basketball teams from around Manitoba at the AAAA, AAA, and A/AA classification levels. A co-ed wheelchair basketball division will be added for up to 4 teams in 2026. Sport wheelchairs will be provided on-site by Basketball Manitoba for use by teams at this level, if required.

To be eligible to play, the player must attend the high school they represent academically. Up to 10 indoor basketball courts will be set up inside the centre for the event. The divisions will be capped at 10 teams per division (4 at the wheelchair level). We anticipate the event will sell out, so register your 4-person team when registration opens!

Basketball Manitoba has announced additional dates for a new virtual focus group series, inviting women and girls in basketball aged 18 and older to share their experiences and help shape the future of the game in Manitoba.

The sessions are intended to gather feedback and lived experience from participants involved in playing, coaching, officiating, and leadership. Input collected through the focus groups will help inform Basketball Manitoba’s Inclusion Strategy and support efforts to build a more equitable basketball environment across the province.

Participants will be invited to share what is working well, what barriers still exist, and what changes could help strengthen the sport experience for women and girls in Manitoba. Basketball Manitoba notes that every story and perspective shared will help guide future planning and decision-making.

All participants will be entered into a draw to win a pair of Winnipeg Sea Bears tickets.

Five Manitoba Athletes Named to Canada Basketball U17 and U18 Men's Selection Camps

Canada Basketball last week announced that five Manitoba-based male athletes were named to its 2026 Men's Selection Camps, which ran April 3-6 at Humber College in Toronto.

Three athletes -- Istvan Reid, Owen Unrau, and Settimo Yugu (pictured alphabetically 2nd, 3rd and 5th respectively above) -- have been named to the U18 Men's Selection Camp, while Kai Becker and Kaj Willms (pictured alphabetically 1st and 4th respectively) attended the U17 Men's Selection Camp, which both ran this past weekend.

The Selection Camps bring together the top male prospects from across the country within Canada Basketball's high-performance pathway. Athletes will be evaluated by national team coaching staff throughout the camp, with final rosters to be determined ahead of this summer's international competition.

The U17 athletes are competing for a spot at the FIBA U17 Men's Basketball World Cup 2026, set for June 27 to July 5 in Istanbul, Turkey. The U18 athletes are vying for a place on the team that will compete at the FIBA U18 Men's AmeriCup 2026.

FINAL RESULTS: Join Basketball Manitoba's 2026 March Madness Men's and Women's Bracket Challenge and Win!

Congratulations to the top finishers of the 2026 Basketball Manitoba March Madness Bracket Challenge!

In the Men’s Pool, 636 brackets were entered, with Adam Wedlake finishing 1st overall with 318 points. As a Basketball Manitoba employee, he is not eligible to receive a prize, so the cash prizes shift to the next eligible finishers.

There was also a tie at 314 points between Eliza McKay and Luke Hiebert. That tie was broken by the CBS system using the championship game tiebreaker formula based on the closest predicted combined final score, resulting in Eliza finishing 3rd and Luke 4th. (The combined championship final score was 132, with Eliza guessing 147 and Luke 164, giving the tie break to Eliza)

All coaches in Manitoba at any level are required to certify every 5 years in the program. Manitoba was the first province to make the RiS program mandatory, and we are equally proud to be the first to make recertification mandatory. Basketball Manitoba is pleased to partner with Sport Manitoba and embrace the Respect in Sport program to help ensure a safe and positive sports environment for all participants. There is no cost for Manitoba coaches to complete this program.

If you had completed the course more than 5 years ago, and to maintain your status as an active basketball coach in Manitoba, you will need to complete the new online system now. The online course has been dramatically revamped and updated since its initial launch in 2007. It touches on contemporary topics that coaches may experience in today's game, including social media, cyber-bullying, hazing, gender identification and more. The course takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours to complete and can be completed in 20-30 minute pieces.

IMPORTANT: If you have completed the course in the past and are looking to re-certify, please use your login information when you initially completed the course. There are options at the point of logging in you can follow to recover your login information if needed.

Toronto Tempo Launch "Tempo Rising" Women’s Coaching Mentorship Program with April 20, 2026 Application Deadline

The Toronto Tempo have announced the launch of Tempo Rising, a new women’s coaching mentorship and leadership development program designed to support the next generation of women leaders in basketball. The program is being delivered in partnership with Giants of Africa.

Tempo Rising is a six-month program that will provide selected participants with one-to-one mentorship, monthly group learning sessions, hands-on coaching development opportunities, and a community impact project to conclude the experience. The initiative is positioned to help emerging coaches build leadership skills, expand their networks, and gain practical experience within the Toronto Tempo ecosystem and the broader basketball community.

Program supports include a $1,000 CAD grant for each selected mentee, two private 30-minute mentorship sessions with Toronto Tempo General Manager Monica Wright Rogers, Head Coach Sandy Brondello, or principal owner Masai Ujiri, monthly 90-minute group discussions, and access to development opportunities connected to clinics, open practices, and community events.

Applicants must be Canadian residents or Giants of Africa Festival coaches, identify as women or non-binary, be coaching at an introductory-to-competitive level, and be available for virtual sessions. The application deadline is April 20, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. PST. Organizers have indicated that three Canadian coaches and three Giants of Africa coaches will be selected for the inaugural cohort.

Tempo Rising is fully funded by the Toronto Tempo, which will begin play in May 2026 as the WNBA’s 14th franchise. Coaches from across Canada are encouraged to apply, with the program’s hybrid structure intended to support national access while still creating select in-person opportunities where possible.

The program represents another important step in expanding leadership pathways for women in basketball and creating meaningful opportunities for coaches working in school, club, and provincial environments. For Manitoba coaches and others across Canada, the initiative offers direct access to high-level mentorship and a national professional development experience tied to one of the most significant new projects in Canadian basketball.

Winnipeg Sea Bears Sign Teddy Allen for 2026 CEBL Season

The Winnipeg Sea Bears today announced the club has signed forward Teddy Allen for the upcoming Canadian Elite Basketball League season.

The 6'6" forward previously played for the Saskatchewan Rattlers (2024, now the Saskatoon Mamba), the Sea Bears (2023-2024) and the Scarborough Shooting Stars (2022). Across his CEBL career, Allen has averaged 24.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game.

"I'm so grateful and excited to get a chance to come back to Winnipeg," said Allen. "I really enjoyed my time there, and I'm looking forward to helping make the Sea Bears champions."

In 2023 with Winnipeg, Allen was named the Canadian Elite Basketball League Most Valuable Player and earned First Team All-CEBL honours after ranking among the league leaders in multiple statistical categories.

"We are excited to welcome Teddy back to the Sea Bears," said Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault. "He is a proven MVP-calibre player in our league and a professional scorer at every level. He's grown his game since his previous time in Winnipeg, and we're looking forward to having him back this summer."

During the 2025-26 NBA G League season, Allen split time between the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and the Delaware Blue Coats after being acquired by Delaware in a three-team trade on February 19, 2026. In the 2025-26 season, he is averaging 20.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.

While with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Allen was named NBA G League Player of the Week in December 2025, becoming the first Vipers player to receive this accolade during the 2025-26 season and the 25th overall in franchise history. Allen was also named to the 2025 G League Winter Showcase All-Showcase Team.

Allen played collegiately at West Virginia University, the University of Nebraska, and New Mexico State University. In the 2021-22 season at New Mexico State, he was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year and WAC Tournament MVP after averaging 19.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

Allen will be signing autographs on April 2 at 3:30 p.m. at the Outlet Collection Winnipeg, all fans are welcome to attend.

Winnipeg’s Olivia Weekes Signs with Bulleen Boomers in Australia After Standout UBC Career

Winnipeg’s Olivia Weekes has announced that she has signed a professional contract with the Bulleen Boomers in Melbourne, Australia, taking the next step in her basketball career after a standout run with the UBC Thunderbirds. The signing follows a 2025-26 season in which she earned U SPORTS Women’s Basketball Second Team All-Canadian honours and was named a Canada West First Team All-Star.

A graduate of Vincent Massey Collegiate in Winnipeg, Weekes has built her career through Manitoba’s player development pathway before going on to excel at the U SPORTS level. She was previously a member of the Manitoba Provincial Team and Centre for Performance / Targeted Athlete Programs.

At UBC, Weekes developed into one of the program’s top players. During the 2025-26 season, she averaged 16.8 points per game and earned national All-Canadian recognition. The year before, she was named a Canada West Second Team All-Star.

Weekes now heads to Australia after finishing her U SPORTS career as one of the top women’s players in the country and one of Manitoba’s leading recent university basketball success stories. Her professional signing is another strong example of a Manitoba-developed athlete progressing from local development programs to national university success and into the pro ranks.

2026 WMBA Foundation Scholarship Now Open for Applications; Deadline April 30

The WMBA Foundation has announced that applications are now open for its 2026 Foundation Scholarship program.

The scholarship program will award two scholarships of up to $500 each to graduating students who have made a meaningful impact within the basketball community through their involvement with the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association. Eligible applicants include players, referees, coaches, and other basketball leaders who have demonstrated commitment, leadership, and a continued investment in the game.

The scholarships are intended to support graduating students as they move on to post-secondary studies, including college, university, or trade school. The program recognizes the important role young leaders play in strengthening the basketball community, whether that contribution has come on the court, on the bench, or behind the whistle.

Applicants must have been involved in WMBA and must be planning to continue their education after graduation. The application deadline is Thursday, April 30, 2026.

UPDATED: Basketball Manitoba Adopts New Safe Sport Policy Manual Effective April 1, 2026 Under Manitoba’s Protecting Youth in Sports Act

Basketball Manitoba has announced that it has formally adopted the new Safe Sport Policy Manual provided by Sport Manitoba, with the new framework taking effect on April 1, 2026, in accordance with The Protecting Youth in Sports Act enacted by the Manitoba Provincial Government.

The new provincial requirements are part of a broader Manitoba-wide safe sport framework being implemented through Sport Manitoba and the Government of Manitoba. The updated policies are intended to strengthen standards across amateur sport by creating a more consistent, transparent, and enforceable system for preventing and responding to maltreatment in sport.

The new Safe Sport Policy Manual includes six required policy areas:

Code of Conduct and Ethics
Discipline and Complaints
Alternate Dispute Resolution
Appeal, Respect in Sport
Coach Screening Policy Minimum Requirements

As Manitoba’s Provincial Sport Organization for basketball, Basketball Manitoba is required to adopt these policies in full, with no amendments, and apply them across its sanctioned clubs, teams, programs, and participants.

One of the most significant changes under the new framework is that maltreatment complaints involving young athletes will no longer be handled internally by the sport organization. Instead, those complaints must be reported directly to an Independent Third Party. This is intended to strengthen impartiality, improve confidence in the complaint process, and ensure that serious matters are addressed through a consistent province-wide system.

The updated policy manual also provides a clearer and more comprehensive definition of prohibited conduct. It identifies maltreatment to include psychological maltreatment, physical maltreatment, neglect, sexual maltreatment, grooming, boundary transgressions, discrimination, retaliation, failure to report, and interference with the complaint process. The new framework also reinforces legal reporting expectations where child protection concerns may exist.

For players and parents, the changes are expected to provide clearer information about rights, responsibilities, warning signs, and reporting pathways. The goal is to make the safe sport system easier to understand and more accessible for families and young participants.

For coaches, the changes introduce more structured education and screening requirements. These include mandatory Respect in Sport training, clearer timelines for completion, annual disclosure expectations, and screening requirements tied to coaching role and level of risk.

For officials, volunteers, clubs, and local associations, the new framework brings stronger expectations around conduct, reporting, screening, cooperation with complaint processes, and alignment with the provincially mandated policies. The changes make it clear that safe sport is a shared responsibility across all levels of the basketball community.

These changes are being made to better protect young athletes, improve accountability, provide clearer expectations for everyone involved in sport, and strengthen confidence in how complaints and concerns are addressed. They also reflect Manitoba’s move toward a more unified and legally supported safe sport model across all recognized sports.

“Basketball Manitoba is committed to doing its part to help ensure that basketball environments in Manitoba are safe, respectful, and accountable for all participants,” said Sara Gillis, President of Basketball Manitoba. “The adoption of this new policy framework reflects an important province-wide step forward in strengthening protections for young athletes, clarifying expectations for everyone involved in sport, and reinforcing that safe sport must remain a shared responsibility across our entire basketball community.”

Basketball Manitoba will now move forward with the implementation of the new framework, including formal policy adoption, internal process alignment, website updates, communication to members, and the posting of new safe sport resources and reporting information.

REGISTRATION CLOSES APRIL 1: 2026 Manitoba Basketball Club Championships Back for Spring; Deadline April 1, 2026

REGISTRATION OPENS MARCH 15: Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce the Manitoba Club Basketball Championships are coming back this spring. Due to the fast-growing club basketball scene, the 2026 Manitoba Basketball Club Championships will now expand to 3 weekends: May 21-24, May 28-31, and June 4-7. Basketball Manitoba will offer basketball teams from around Manitoba and beyond the opportunity to participate in this spring basketball championship. Registration will be open on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 12 noon.

Due to this growth, the traditional date for the Manitoba Provincial Team Tryouts will take place in Winnipeg at the Sport Manitoba Courts on May 10-12, 2026. Details will be announced in the coming weeks.

CHANGES FOR 2026:

No Cap on Team Entries by Division

There will be no cap on the number of teams permitted to enter in any age or gender division. All age-eligible teams that complete the application and registration requirements by April 1 will be accepted into the event. This approach is intended to increase access and to determine the competitive structure through tiering.

Mandatory Tier Declaration (Tier 1 or Tier 2)

As part of the application process, each team must self-declare as either "Tier 1" or "Tier 2". Teams will be required to provide a brief written rationale supporting their declaration, referencing factors such as competitive history, recent results, athlete experience, league placement, and overall team composition. This information will be reviewed to support appropriate tier placement and competitive balance across divisions. Basketball Manitoba reserves the right to reassign teams to ensure quality competition.

Final Roster Submission and Payment Deadline – April 1

As there are no caps on the number of teams accepted, a full and final team roster and full payment are required at the time of registration to secure a position in the Championships. The registration, roster and payment deadline is April 1. Rosters submitted after this date will not be accepted, and incomplete registrations or partial payments will result in the team's exclusion from the event. No exceptions or extensions will be granted under any circumstances.

Single-Team Participation Rule (Roster Integrity and Competitive Balance)

Each athlete may be registered to only one (1) team. Players are not permitted to compete on more than one team, regardless of age category, division, week or tier. This restriction is necessary due to the Championships’ structure and operating model. Teams are tiered based on competitive history, roster composition, and declared playing level (Tier 1 or Tier 2). Allowing athletes to appear on multiple rosters would undermine the tiering process, distort competitive balance, and compromise the integrity of Tier 1 and Tier 2 divisions. For these reasons, roster exclusivity is mandatory. Any violation of this policy may result in player ineligibility, game forfeiture, or removal of the team from the Championships.

WATCH ARCHIVED VIDEOS: Thursday night saw the wrap-up of the 27th annual Junior High Basketball Championships at Tec Voc High School. The tournament featured the top junior high and middle school teams from the greater Winnipeg area competing in a year-end event. This year, 43 boys and girls teams from grades 7-9 competed in the four-day tournament.
