VIEW SCHEDULE AND RESULTS BELOW: Basketball Manitoba is pleased to release the Week 2 schedule for the 2026 Manitoba Basketball Club Championships, featuring teams at the 13U to 18U female age groups. The Week 2 event will be held from May 29 to May 31 at the Sport Manitoba Courts and the University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre.

The Week 1 event will take place this weekend, on May 22-24, at the University of Manitonba and the University of Winnipeg, with links to both schedules found below. Results will be updated on the schedules as games are completed.

A total of 131 club teams will be participating in the event over three weekends (up from 110 last year).

Peg City Summer Men's Basketball League Registration Now Open

Peg City Basketball has announced that registration is now open for its 2026 summer season, offering Winnipeg basketball players and teams a competitive senior basketball experience from July to September.

The Peg City Summer League combines competitive intensity with a laid-back summer basketball atmosphere, featuring organized league play, full standings, playoffs, player awards, rivalries, and a championship finish. The league is designed for teams and individual players looking for structured, high-energy basketball throughout the summer months.

The 2026 season will run from July to September, with games scheduled Sunday through Thursday. No games will be scheduled on Fridays or Saturdays. Venues will include the Sport for Life Centre, Dakota Fieldhouse, University of Winnipeg, and MBCI.

Each registered team will receive 10 free custom team jerseys. The league also includes full statistics, automatic highlight clips, official MABO referees, organized scheduling, playoffs, player awards, and championship energy throughout the season.

Team registration is $1,850 per team, while free agent registration is available for $190 per player. Players can register as part of a full team or individually as free agents.

Spots are limited, and divisions are expected to fill quickly. Teams that secured early registration will also receive a unique discount code to return at last summer’s rate.

Winnipeg Sea Bears Appoint Rhéanne Marcoux as Team President

May 22, 2026 – Winnipeg, MB - David Asper, owner and Chair of the Winnipeg Sea Bears, has announced the appointment of Rhéanne Marcoux as team President, effective June 1, 2026. Marcoux has been serving as Chief Brand and Experience Officer since January 2026, and prior to that, worked closely with the Sea Bears as an external consultant and staff mentor. Asper will remain as Chair of the Sea Bears and, as a co-owner of the Canadian Elite Basketball League, will continue as the team’s Director on the League Board, where he currently serves on its Executive Committee.

“Rhéanne is a proven success in professional sports in Winnipeg, and her impact with the Bombers is truly national – for both the team and the CFL itself,” said Asper. “Since joining the Sea Bears, she has fundamentally transformed how this organization operates, from implementing new systems and processes to establishing long-term team culture across the organization. This appointment is the natural next step, and I’m looking forward to having our fans and our entire organization benefit from her leadership.”

Over an 11-year tenure with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Marcoux rose from the marketing department to Vice President, Marketing and Communications for the 112th Grey Cup, where she led the brand strategy, content creation, fan engagement, and communications apparatus for one of the CFL’s most iconic franchises. Her work culminated in overseeing the marketing and communications efforts for the 2026 Grey Cup Festival, a national tentpole event that showcased Winnipeg on the country’s biggest stage.

Prior to her time with the Blue Bombers, Marcoux built a diverse career across broadcast journalism with Radio Canada, sports marketing with True North Sports and Entertainment, and as founder of her own creative agency. She holds a degree in communications and is an alumna of Red River College and the University of Winnipeg.

A content strategist, design specialist, multimedia expert, and brand builder, Marcoux is known for her ability to create emotional connections between fans and the brands they love. Her approach goes beyond traditional advertising – it’s rooted in storytelling, creative ambition, and a deep understanding of what turns casual fans into lifelong ones.

Since arriving at the Sea Bears in January 2026, Marcoux has implemented a new CRM, launched a marketing automation system, introduced project management infrastructure, and led a brand and culture reset across the organization. As President, she will oversee all business operations, brand strategy, revenue, marketing, ticketing, partnerships, fan experience, and community engagement.

“When I came on board, I saw an organization with incredible potential and a fan base that was ready for more,” said Marcoux. “Over the past several months, we’ve been building new foundations – new systems, new processes and a new way of working together. VAULT IS NOW OPEN: Basketball Manitoba and Victory Vault Sweepstakes have announced a new fundraising initiative to support amateur athletes and help address the rising cost of participation in basketball in Manitoba.

Launching in Manitoba on April 15, 2026, the Victory Vault Sweepstakes will offer Manitobans weekly chances to win cash prizes while directing ticket proceeds toward initiatives supporting young athletes and amateur sport organizations across the province.

The new initiative comes at a time when the cost of sport continues to be a growing barrier for many families. According to the 2024 Jumpstart State of Play Youth Report, 47 percent of people identified cost as the number one reason they do not participate in sport, making affordability the single largest barrier to play in Canada. Families are increasingly facing annual sport expenses that can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars per child, particularly in competitive programs.

Victory Vault Sweepstakes has been designed to help ease that burden by creating a new revenue stream for Manitoba’s Provincial Sport Organizations and their affiliated clubs. By generating additional funding, the program aims to help offset costs that might otherwise be passed on to athletes and their families, contributing to a more accessible and inclusive sport system across Manitoba.

Each week, participants can purchase sweepstakes tickets for a chance to win cash prizes. Basketball Manitoba is communicating to all active basketball clubs in the province when the window for tryouts for next year's programs may begin. As has been the agreement for the past number of years, no tryouts for next year's club programs shall begin before a set date in August, which will be Friday, August 14, 2026. The time restriction will provide an equal starting point for clubs to plan and begin their programs for the next season, allowing for some needed rest and recovery time away from basketball for players, coaches, and families. Clubs can continue their tryouts through August and into September.

Four Point Basketball Camp Set for June 29 - July 3 for Ages 12-16

Four Point Basketball has announced details for its 2026 Winnipeg Sharp Shooters Camp, a high-level coed basketball development camp designed to help players become more confident, consistent and intelligent scorers through elite shooting instruction, purposeful repetitions and game-based teaching.

The camp will take place from Monday, June 29 to Friday, July 3, 2026 at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) in Winnipeg and is open to athletes ages 12-16.

Led by noted shooting coach Jey and supported by an experienced coaching staff made up of former post-secondary basketball players, the Sharp Shooters Camp is built around developing complete offensive players through detailed shooting mechanics, decision making and live gameplay situations.

The camp focuses on far more than simply taking shots. Players will learn how to create quality scoring opportunities, understand when and where to attack, and build the confidence needed to perform under pressure in real-game situations.

Core teaching concepts throughout the week include:

• Temporal awareness – understanding timing, rhythm and when to shoot within the flow of the game
• Spatial awareness – learning how to move into space, create separation and identify scoring windows
• Situational awareness – reading defenders and making effective scoring decisions in real time

A major emphasis of the camp is on shooting mechanics and self-awareness. Athletes will break down and refine their individual shooting form while learning the habits and adjustments that lead to long-term consistency. Instruction will focus on footwork, balance, shot preparation and release mechanics to help players repeat their shot confidently and efficiently.

Ball handling and finishing are also integrated throughout the camp to help players become scoring threats at all three levels. Athletes will participate in small-sided gameplay, competitive drills and live decision-making scenarios designed to connect skill development directly to game application.

The Winnipeg Sharp Shooters Camp is structured as a high-repetition, high-energy environment where athletes are challenged to improve their shooting ability, offensive awareness and confidence as scorers.

The Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame induction dinner, which happens only every second year, is coming up this fall on Saturday, September 26, at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg. The event will see two players, Uzoma Asagwara and Chad Posthumus, four builders, Earl Barish, Ted Fardoe, Bryan Kornberger and Anne Schimnowski-Boyko, along with championship teams from the Brandon University Bobcats and the Glenboro Schgoiol Panthers, inducted. Tickets are now available and can be ordered and paid for at the link below.

Doors open at 5:30 with a cash bar, dinner is at 7:00 sharp, and the induction ceremonies will start at 8:00. Don't miss out on honouring our newest inductees. The event has become a gathering of our extended basketball community and a celebration of the game we all love. Get your tickets today.

Tickets are $100.00 each, and a table of eight (8) can be reserved for $750.00. You can reserve and pay for tickets by completing the ticket request form.

Payment accepted includes eTransfer to mbhof@basketballmanitoba.ca, credit card, or mailed cheque. The MBHOF prefers the eTransfer option because 100% of funds reach the Hall, whereas a credit card incurs 3-5% in processing fees. A cheque payable to "MBHOF" is also an option; it can be mailed to Basketball Manitoba at 145 Pacific Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 2Z6. No tickets will be sold at the door on September 26. All seating for the dinner is assigned, meaning you can sit with the people of your choice. Doors will open at 5:30 pm with a cash bar, dinner is at 7:00 pm, and induction ceremonies will begin at about 8:00 pm. The event will also be video-recorded so those unable to attend the in-person dinner can view the induction portion of the evening.

Our Hall of Fame dinners have become a special gathering place for our extended basketball community. We hope many will choose to attend this fall to celebrate the game we all love and to honour our newest inductees.

The Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum announced its Class of 2026 inductees during a media conference held on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at the University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre.

The announcement recognized an accomplished group of players, builders, and teams whose contributions helped shape the history and growth of basketball in Manitoba at the high school, university, provincial, national, and professional levels.

All individual inductees, along with representatives of the inducted teams, were recognized during the event, which took place in front of the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum at the Duckworth Centre.

The Class of 2026 included three players, three builders, and two team inductees. Together, they represented generations of excellence in Manitoba basketball and reflected the depth of achievement that continues to define the sport in the province.

The official induction ceremony is scheduled for the evening of Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg.

PLAYERS

Uzoma Asagwara

Uzoma Asagwara was announced as a player inductee following an outstanding basketball career that included success at the high school, university, and national team levels.

A graduate of Collège St. Norbert Collegiate, Asagwara starred with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen from 2002 to 2007 and established themself as one of the top players in the country during their university career. They were a two-time CIS/U SPORTS All-Canadian and a two-time Canada West First Team All-Star in 2006 and 2007.

In 2007, Asagwara led the nation in scoring at 28.5 points per game and was previously named the University of Winnipeg Female Athlete of the Year in 2006. They also represented Canada twice at the national team level, including at the 2007 Pan Am Games in Rio.

Uzoma’s induction recognizes an elite playing career marked by national honours, high-level production, and important representation of Manitoba basketball on the international stage.

Anne Schimnowski-Boyko

Anne Schimnowski-Boyko was announced as a player inductee in recognition of a decorated university career and her place among the province’s top female players of her era.

A graduate of Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, Schimnowski-Boyko played with the University of Manitoba Bisons from 1989 to 1994. During that time, she earned national and conference honours, including selection to the CIAU/CIS All-Rookie Team and to the GPAC All-Star Team in 1990 and 1994.

Her strongest season came in 1994 when she averaged 21.7 points per game and earned CIAU/CIS All-Canadian honours. She also represented Manitoba twice as a member of the Manitoba provincial teams.

Anne’s induction recognizes sustained excellence at the university level and a career that stood out in Manitoba basketball history.

Chad Posthumus was announced posthumously as a player inductee in recognition of a remarkable basketball journey that took him from Manitoba high school courts to university basketball, professional leagues worldwide, and the Canadian National Team.

A graduate of River East Collegiate, Posthumus was named an All-Manitoban in 2009 and represented Manitoba on provincial teams for five years. He continued his career at UBC, Howard College, and Morehead State University in Kentucky, where he went on to lead the NCAA in rebounding.

He later played professionally in Argentina, Japan, and China, while also representing Canada internationally. In recent years, he returned home to continue his professional career with the Winnipeg Sea Bears of the CEBL.

Sadly, Chad passed away on November 20, 2024.

Chad’s induction recognizes both his outstanding accomplishments on the court and the lasting impact he made on basketball in Manitoba and across Canada.

BUILDERS

Earl Barish

Earl Barish was announced as a builder inductee for his major role in professional basketball in Manitoba and for his long-standing commitment to growing the game in Winnipeg.

Barish was the founder, president, and majority owner of the Winnipeg Cyclone, the professional team that played in Winnipeg from 1995 to 2001 as a member of the International Basketball Association and later the Continental Basketball Association. He also served as President of the IBA and as league liaison to the NBA from 1995 to 1999.

Beyond his executive leadership in professional basketball, Barish supported broader basketball development in the community, including programs that enabled many local young players to attend Cyclone games at no charge.

Earl’s induction recognizes vision, leadership, and a significant contribution to the profile and accessibility of basketball in Manitoba.

Ted Fardoe

Ted Fardoe was announced as a builder inductee for his decades of service as an administrator, coach, and grassroots leader in Winnipeg basketball.

Fardoe served on the executive board of the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association for 14 years, including 11 as President. During that time, he helped lead the implementation of Respect in Sport, Fair Play, and coaching development initiatives.

He also played a major role in basketball facility development by managing the construction of six outdoor basketball courts, one in each district of Winnipeg. In addition, he was one of the founders of the Junior Bisons club and coached in the WMBA as well as at Oak Park and John Taylor Collegiate.

Ted’s induction recognized a legacy built on leadership, access, development, and long-term service to the game.

Bryan Kornberger

Bryan Kornberger was announced as a builder inductee in recognition of one of the most accomplished coaching careers in Manitoba high school basketball history.

Best known for his 40 years as head coach of the Varsity Girls team at Glenlawn Collegiate, Kornberger led the Lions to 19 provincial Final Four appearances, 12 provincial championship game appearances, and eight MHSAA AAAA provincial championships.

He also coached Team Manitoba provincial teams 10 times, winning two medals, including a gold medal in 1991. Over the years, many of his athletes advanced to successful university and national team careers, and he contributed to coach development through clinics and mentorship.

Bryan’s induction recognizes not only an exceptional record of success but also a lasting influence on athletes, programs, and coaches across Manitoba.

Glenboro School Panthers Varsity Girls

The Glenboro School Panthers Varsity Girls were announced as team inductees for a championship era that established the program as one of the most successful small-school girls basketball teams in Manitoba history.

The Panthers captured MHSAA Provincial A Girls Championships in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009, completing a remarkable stretch of sustained excellence.

Their induction recognizes a team era defined by consistency, championship success, and a lasting place in Manitoba high school basketball history.

Brandon University Bobcats Men

The Brandon University Bobcats Men were announced as team inductees in recognition of an outstanding run of national success during the early 1980s.

The Bobcats earned medals at the CIAU/CIS national championship tournament in four seasons, winning silver in 1980 and 1984 and bronze in 1982 and 1983.

Their induction recognizes one of the strongest stretches in program history and honours a team legacy built on national-level excellence and a major contribution to the reputation of Manitoba university basketball.

The Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum continues its mission to recognize deserving players, teams, and builders for their outstanding achievements in basketball while preserving and showcasing the rich history of the game in Manitoba.

The Class of 2026 will be formally inducted on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg. Dinner tickets will go on sale later this spring.

Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Terry Garrow.

He is one of the standout players in Manitoba Bisons history. Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, he came to Manitoba and quickly made an impact, helping lead the Bisons to back-to-back GPAC championships and a CIAU national bronze medal.

He was a three-time GPAC All-Star and earned CIS All-Canadian honours in 1988, averaging nearly 23 points per game in his final season. He was also a three-time Wesmen Classic All-Star and tournament MVP in 1987, establishing himself as one of the top guards in the country at that time.

Following his university career, Terry went on to play professionally with the Winnipeg Thunder and continued to compete at a high level with senior men’s teams, many of which had strong Indigenous representation.

Terry is also passionate about honouring his family’s legacy in the game, particularly by advocating for the recognition of his father, Alex Garrow, as the first Indigenous basketball player inducted into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame.

He continues to work with leaders in the basketball community to help share that story and ensure his father’s impact on the game is properly recognized.

Terry’s contributions to the game were recognized with his induction into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015, and he continues to represent Canada on the international stage in masters competition, including at the FIMBA World Championships.

MiniBallers has announced details for its 2026 Move.Learn.Play Summer Camp program, offering two weeks of basketball-themed fun for children ages 3 to 12 in Winnipeg.

The camps are designed for young athletes who have caught the basketball bug and are looking for an active, positive and fun summer experience. MiniBallers will offer programming that helps children have fun, stay active, build confidence and make new friends through basketball and recreation-based activities.

Wheelchair Basketball Canada Announces Senior Women’s National Team Coaching Transition Featuring Manitoba Basketball Leaders

Basketball Manitoba is recognizing a major coaching announcement involving two key leaders closely connected to the Manitoba basketball community, following news released this week by Wheelchair Basketball Canada regarding the Senior Women’s National Team program.

Wheelchair Basketball Canada has announced that Michele Sung will step down as Head Coach of Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team following a highly successful two-year period leading the program, while Manitoba’s Joey Johnson has been named as the new head coach.

Sung, who currently serves on the Basketball Manitoba Board of Directors and is also the head coach of the University of Manitoba Bisons Women's Basketball program, helped guide Canada to a fourth-place finish at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris — the team’s best Paralympic result in over 20 years. She also led Canada’s women’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball team to a gold medal at the inaugural IWBF 3x3 Open World Championships and a bronze medal at the 2025 IWBF Americas Cup.

“It has been an incredible privilege to lead this program and work alongside such dedicated athletes, coaches, and support staff,” said Sung through the Wheelchair Basketball Canada announcement. “I’m proud of what we accomplished together and grateful for the relationships and experiences that came with representing Canada on the international stage.”

Basketball Manitoba acknowledged Sung’s ongoing leadership and contributions to basketball in Manitoba through both the able-bodied and wheelchair basketball pathways.

“We are extremely proud of Michele and the impact she has had on the national stage,” said Basketball Manitoba Executive Director Adam Wedlake. “Her leadership, professionalism, and commitment to athlete development continue to positively influence basketball across Manitoba and Canada.”

Taking over the Senior Women’s National Team program is Joey Johnson, Basketball Manitoba’s Manager of Wheelchair and 3x3 Operations and one of Canada’s most decorated wheelchair basketball athletes and coaches.

A native of Lorette, Manitoba, Johnson recently served as head coach of Great Britain’s men’s national wheelchair basketball team, guiding the program to a silver medal finish at the 2024 Paralymic Games. Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach with Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team at both the 2019 Parapan American Games and the Tokyo 2020 Paralymic Games.

As an athlete, Johnson represented Canada at five Paralympic Games, capturing three gold medals and one silver, and won a World Championship in 2006.

“I’m honoured for the opportunity to lead this program and continue building on the strong foundation already in place,” said Johnson through the Wheelchair Basketball Canada release. “Canada has a proud history in wheelchair basketball, and I’m excited to work with this talented group of athletes and staff as we prepare for the next chapter together.”

Basketball Manitoba noted that Johnson’s appointment further strengthens Manitoba’s longstanding connection to the national wheelchair basketball system and highlights the province’s continued leadership within the sport.

Wheelchair Basketball Canada also announced that Australian coach Craig Campbell will join the Senior Women’s National Team coaching staff as an assistant coach, bringing more than two decades of international coaching and high-performance experience to the program.

Sung will remain involved through the upcoming national team training camp in Richmond, British Columbia to assist with the transition process.

Sikh Hoops Winnipeg Announces 2026 Tournament Details for May 15-17 at the University of Manitoba IGAC

Sikh Hoops Winnipeg has announced details for its 2026 tournament, set for Friday, May 15 to Sunday, May 17, 2026, at the University of Manitoba’s Investors Group Athletic Centre.

The event will feature competitive basketball across multiple divisions, with the tournament held on three FIBA courts inside the Investors Group Athletic Centre at 75 Sydney Smith Street in Winnipeg. The facility also includes men’s and women’s locker rooms and showers, a food canteen and ample parking.

The 2026 Sikh Hoops Winnipeg tournament will include a number of upgrades and added features for participating teams and spectators. Prize money will be offered across divisions, with possible increases noted by the event organizers. Current prize amounts include $10,000 for the Elite Division, $5,000 for the Rec Division and $2,500 for the High School Division.

All teams participating in the 2026 event will receive free reversible jerseys.

The tournament will also feature a Sunday dinner as part of the event wrap-up. The dinner is described by organizers as the first of its kind and the only wrap-up event in Sikh Hoops and Indo tournament basketball across the continent.

Sikh Hoops Winnipeg will also provide live coverage of the event, with three-day livestreaming planned for all three courts. Winnipeg Sea Bears Sign Point Guard Trey McGowens for 2026 CEBL Season

Winnipeg, MB, May 14, 2026 — The Winnipeg Sea Bears today announced the club has signed point guard Trey McGowens for the upcoming Canadian Elite Basketball League season.

McGowens (6-3, 190, University of Pittsburgh; born: May 15, 2000, in Pendleton, South Carolina) arrives in Winnipeg following a 2025–26 season with the NBA G League’s Austin Spurs, where he averaged 6.4 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. McGowens also competed in the EuroCup with the Trefl Sopot in Poland.

In 2023–24, McGowens split time between three NBA G League teams; the Long Island Nets, College Park Skyhawks and Raptors 905, and made his first CEBL appearance with the Edmonton Stingers, where he led the team in scoring at 15.7 points per game while adding 4.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.2 steals. With the College Park Skyhawks in that same season, he averaged 12.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.9 steals across seven games.

McGowens has also represented the United States on the international stage and was named MVP of the 2023 FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup in Lublin, Poland, leading Team USA to a gold medal in the country’s first-ever U23 World Cup title. McGowens finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 54 points and starred in the gold-medal final with 10 points in a 21–3 victory over Israel.

The point guard played four collegiate seasons across the University of Pittsburgh (2018-19) and the University of Nebraska. As a freshman at Pittsburgh, he set the freshman single-game records for points (33), steals (7) and free throws (18), and was named ACC Rookie of the Week in both December 2018 and January 2019. After transferring to Nebraska, he averaged 10.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game in 2020–21, ranking among the Big Ten leaders in scoring, assists and steals.

The Winnipeg Sea Bears are set to begin their fourth season in the Canadian Elite Basketball League with heightened expectations, a revamped roster, and one of the strongest collections of Manitoba basketball talent ever assembled by the franchise.

Following a trip to the 2025 CEBL Championship Weekend semifinals, the Sea Bears enter Season 4 under new Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault, a longtime Manitoba basketball leader and current University of Winnipeg Wesmen head coach. Raimbault takes the lead on a franchise that has quickly become one of the league’s premier organizations both on the court and at the gate since joining the CEBL in 2023.

The 2026 roster blends experienced professional talent, returning fan favourites, high-level imports, and a strong Manitoba presence. Returning stars include Teddy Allen, Emmanuel Akot, Nathan Bilamu, and Simon Hildebrandt, while major additions include CEBL superstar Xavier Moon, veteran forward Kevin Cross Jr., dynamic scorer Davion Warren, and former NBA G League and international standout David Walker.

The Sea Bears have continued to prioritize Manitoba talent throughout the offseason with Winnipeg products Kyler Filewich and Mason Kraus, joining Hildebrandt and Akot, all earning roster spots heading into the season. Filewich returns following his first professional season overseas after beginning his pro career with the Sea Bears in 2025, while Hildebrandt returns to his hometown club after continuing to establish himself as one of the top young Canadian players in the country.

The Winnipeg Sea Bears will also enter the 2026 season with an entirely revamped coaching staff led by newly appointed Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault, one of the most respected basketball leaders in Manitoba. Run It Back High School Alumni Basketball Tournament Back Aug 14-15 at Duckworth

The organizers of the Run It Back Tournament have announced the return of the annual summer basketball showcase for its fourth edition, taking place August 14–16, 2028, at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Building on the momentum of previous years, Run It Back 2026 will once again bring together some of Manitoba’s top basketball talent and community personalities for a weekend focused on elite competition, entertainment, and championship-level intensity.

The tournament will feature multiple divisions, including the Legends Division, All-Time Division, and Ladies Division, along with the return of the popular Target Score Ending format that has become a signature feature of the event.

Organizers say the tournament continues to evolve each year while maintaining the competitive atmosphere and community-driven energy that has helped establish Run It Back as one of the premier summer basketball events in Manitoba.

Championship teams will compete for cash prizes, custom championship belts, and provincial bragging rights as teams from across the region battle for the title.

Team registration is now officially open.

Manitoba's Rick DeGagne Named 2026 Ted Earley Memorial Award Recipient by Canada Basketball Officials Commission

The Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials is pleased to announce that longtime Manitoba basketball official Rick DeGagne has been named the 2026 recipient of the Ted Earley Memorial Award by the Canada Basketball Officials Commission.

The Ted Earley Memorial Award is CBOC’s highest honour and recognizes an official who has demonstrated superior ability on the floor, significant national and international experience, extensive service to the basketball community, leadership at the provincial and national levels, and meaningful contributions to education and interpretation within the game.

A native of Kenora, Ontario, and longtime resident of Brandon, Manitoba, Rick has been part of the basketball community since 1977. His impact spans nearly five decades as a player, coach, official, clinician, evaluator, mentor and administrator.

A former Brandon University Bobcat, Rick played three seasons from 1977 to 1980 and was named the Bobcats’ Rookie of the Year in 1977-78. He was later inducted into the Brandon University Sports Wall of Fame as part of the 1979-80 Bobcats team and also recognized in the Community Leadership category. In addition to this national recognition, Rick will also be part of the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2026, with his induction tied to the Brandon University Bobcats program and is scheduled to take place this fall.

As an official, DeGagne has built one of the most accomplished resumes in Manitoba and Canadian basketball history. He began officiating in 1977 in the Brandon Senior Men’s League and has been a MABO member since 1978, working high school games for 48 years and university basketball for the past 46 years. He has officiated more than 1,000 university-level games, more than 100 GPAC and Canada West playoff games, and received 16 national championship assignments, including four gold medal games.

Internationally, DeGagne represented Canada in 37 games as a FIBA official and worked some of the sport’s highest-profile events, including the 1999 and 2003 Pan American Games, the 2001 FISU Games, a 1999 Olympic Qualification Tournament, the Jones Cup in Taiwan, the Nike Hoop Summit and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. At the Sydney Olympics, his assignments included the men’s quarter-final between the United States and Russia, the women’s semi-final between the United States and Korea, and served as the alternate for the men’s gold medal game between the United States and France. Of note, all of Rick`s international assignments were comprised of games with a crew of only two officials.

Beyond his work on the court, DeGagne has made a major contribution to the development of officials across Manitoba and Canada. He has served as a MABO clinician and evaluator, a national referee coach, a Canada Basketball/CBOC NOCP Learning Facilitator, a Canada West referee coach and observer, and as director and clinician at the inaugural Impact Officiating Camp in Winnipeg. He has also served in leadership roles with MABO, the Westman Basketball Officials Association, and national officiating education committees.

DeGagne’s contribution to the game also includes coaching nearly 30 basketball teams between 1979 and 2011, including school and community teams in Brandon and Boissevain. His teams included MHSAA provincial finalists and champions, and he helped launch the West-Fit Wildcats girls club program.

In 2014, DeGagne received the John A. “Wink” Willox Award, recognizing his length of service, performance and contribution to basketball officiating in Canada. His broader sport leadership has also been recognized through multiple halls of fame inductions, including the Brandon University Sports Wall of Fame, the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame, the Kenora Sports Hall of Fame and the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame.

“Rick DeGagne’s career represents the very best of basketball officiating in Manitoba and Canada,” said MABO President Reid Kenyon. “His on-court accomplishments are exceptional, but his broader impact as a mentor, clinician, evaluator and builder is what has helped shape generations of officials. This national recognition is well deserved and reflects a lifetime of service to the game.”

New UM Bison Women's Basketball Fundraising Initiative Underway

The Manitoba Bisons women's basketball program is launching a crowdfunding campaign, with all donations matched by a generous donor. This push for funding comes at a pivotal moment for women’s sports. Across the world, women’s sports are on the rise, however women’s sports still face a critical funding gap.

Direct investment is the primary engine for closing this gap; it doesn't just fund games, it builds the infrastructure—coaching, travel, and health support—that allows women to stay in the game and develop the leadership skills that serve them for a lifetime.

SCHEDULE RELEASED: Battle for Turtle Island Registration Now Open for May 15-17 Basketball Tourney for Adult and Youth Teams

The organizers of the annual Battle for Turtle Island have announced that team registration is now open for its fourth annual all-Indigenous 5x5 basketball tournament, set to take place from May 15 to May 17, 2026.

The tournament will feature four divisions, including men’s, women’s, U17 boys, and U17 girls, and is expected to once again bring together athletes, teams, and communities for a high-level weekend of competition and celebration through basketball.

Available team spots include 16 teams in the men’s division, 12 teams in the women’s division, 8 teams in the U17 boys division, and 8 teams in the U17 girls division. Organizers have indicated that space is limited and encourage teams to register early to secure their place in the event.

The adult divisions will play for a 100 percent payout and will also receive championship merchandise and medals. Registration for adult teams is $750. Youth teams in the U17 boys and U17 girls divisions will compete for championship merchandise and medals, with registration set at $500 per team.

The event will be hosted at the University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre and will continue the tournament’s growing tradition of creating competitive and meaningful opportunities for Indigenous athletes in Manitoba and beyond.

Teams wishing to register are asked to email warriorzbasketball3@gmail.com with the subject line: BFTI Registration - [Division]. Registration emails must include the team name, team contact person, email address, and phone number.

Organizers have also advised that a 50 percent non-refundable retainer is required to secure a team’s spot in the tournament. All inquiries and registrations will be responded to as quickly as possible.

Battle for Turtle Island continues to build momentum as a signature Indigenous basketball event, offering strong competition across youth and adult divisions while celebrating community, culture, and the game.

REMINDER: Nothin’ But Nets Campaign Back for 2026; Now Offering Free Rims

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce the return of an initiative to give away up to 100 FREE basketball nets to be installed on public courts across Manitoba! The "Nothin' But Nets" campaign aims to get every outdoor public basketball court outfitted with a new mesh this summer. Since launching this campaign in 2021, Basketball Manitoba has distributed over 525 free nets for public courts to the Manitoba basketball community.

NEW FOR 2026, Basketball Manitoba also has a limited number of new basketball rims available to the community to replace aging or damaged ones in public spaces. Due to their size and weight, the rims will need to be picked up from the Sport Manitoba building in Winnipeg once they have been arranged for. As rims require more work to install a net, these available rims must be installed by or with the permission of the facility owner or manager. More details are in the request form.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

This campaign is connected to the Manitoba Basketball Outdoor Court Map project, in which only outdoor courts listed on the map are eligible for a free net or rim. The map feature currently includes detailed court specs for over 335 outdoor public courts (with over 840 individual hoops) in Manitoba. If your area's outdoor public court still needs to be added to the map, SUBMIT your specs to us first, then request your free nets or rim.

Basketball Manitoba will provide up to 2 high-quality basketball nets and one rim per court to the first 100 net requests we receive this summer. Those eligible under the terms of the campaign will receive the nets by mail shortly after submitting an online request and will then be responsible for mounting the items in their community. Proof that the nets or rim have been mounted, including a before-and-after photo, will be required for the individual to remain eligible to receive future nets or rims from Basketball Manitoba.

The Westman Youth Basketball Association (WYBA) has announced that registration is now open for its 2026 Club Basketball Tournament (Boys Only), taking place May 15–17, 2026, in Brandon, Manitoba.

This annual tournament provides a competitive spring opportunity for club programs and teams, with a minimum of four games guaranteed for each entry.

Tournament Format / Notes

Each division will have an initial cap of 12 teams, with a waiting list implemented once divisions are full.
Divisions with more than seven (7) teams will be divided into two tiers to support more competitive matchups.
Championship shirts will be awarded to the winning team in each division/tier.
Games will feature 10-minute stop-time quarters, except in cases of 30+ point differential or if schedule delays require adjustment.
Teams are responsible for their own transportation and accommodation expenses.
Teams are reminded to register in the correct age division and to review the refund policy on the registration form.

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce details on the 2026 Provincial Team Tryouts for the upcoming summer. The tryouts for the program will take place May 8-10 at the Sport Manitoba Courts (aka Canada Games Sport for Life Centre), 145 Pacific Avenue in Winnipeg, MB.

The 2026 Manitoba Provincial Team Program will be forming a total of six teams. The 15U and 17U male teams will represent Manitoba at the Canada Basketball National Championships hosted in Regina, Saskatchewan. The 15U and 17U female teams will represent Manitoba at the Canada Basketball National Championship, hosted in Sherbrooke, Quebec. The 14U teams will be a development group, travelling to tournaments and competitions in July. The ages for the teams will be 17U (born in 2009 or later), 15U (born in 2011 or later) and 14U (born in 2012 or later) at both the male and female levels. Details on the Manitoba Provincial Team coaching staff announced earlier this year can be found HERE.

The teams will be selected from the May 8-10 open tryouts, and any Manitoba resident in one of the defined age categories is eligible and welcome to try out. Once the teams are chosen, they will train and compete together through June, July, and early August. Information can be found HERE.

CHECK-IN: On-site check-in will begin 30 minutes before the first tryout per age category.
BRING A BASKETBALL: Players are asked to bring their own basketball (Female size 6, Male size 7)
TRYOUT FEE: $40.00 per person is due at the time of online registration (credit card or eTransfer payment options are available).
REVERSIBLE JERSEY: All registered players will receive and keep a 'Basketball Manitoba' reversible jersey
ARRIVAL TIME: Players should arrive at least 20 minutes early to the tryout sessions, dressed and ready to play
PROGRAM FEES: All players selected for one of the Provincial Teams will be assessed the $1,500 program fee for transportation, accommodations, meals and flight to the National Championships. The program fee also includes gear packages, training costs, and insurance. Basketball Manitoba subsidizes 50% of the total cost of the summer program. Additional fundraising, financial support programs, and payment options are available. Please note that this fee may change as the new Basketball Manitoa budget and finances are set heading into the spring.

SPECIAL TRYOUT NOTES

Age Advancement
Basketball Manitoba allows a younger player to play up an age for a Provincial Team. Any younger-age athlete who wishes to try out for an older-age program is welcome to do so. After the first session, the older coaching staff and Selection Committee can decide whether the younger athlete will continue in the older tryouts or be asked to return to the younger tryouts. Any athlete looking to try out at an older age must contact Dan Becker first.

Northwestern Ontario Residents
Those residing in Northwestern Ontario (west of and including Thunder Bay) can try out once they have first contacted the Basketball Manitoba office and then received written clearance from Basketball Ontario. Contact Adam Wedlake first before proceeding.

Provincial Team Selection Policy
Updated in November 2023, the Basketball Manitoba Board of Directors passed a motion on a new Provincial Team Selection Policy. As part of our commitment to providing a transparent and equitable Provincial Team selection procedure, there is a need for a consistent policy to protect the integrity of the Provincial Team program and its coaches. Basketball Manitoba has moved the Provincial Team tryouts to late May, avoiding much of the club basketball season. Athletes selected on one of the Manitoba Provincial Teams will be expected to fully commit to the program for all practices, training sessions and competitions. Winnipeg Sea Bears Launch Summer Series Youth Camp on May 12, 2026 for Ages 9–15 at Sport Manitoba Courts

The Winnipeg Sea Bears have announced the launch of the Sea Bears Summer Series, a youth basketball camp set to take place on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Sport Manitoba.

The two-hour session will run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. CT and is open to athletes aged 9 to 15. The camp will provide a structured, high-energy environment focused on skill development, confidence building, and fundamental basketball training.

Led by Sea Bears Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault, the session will also feature current players and assistant coaches, offering participants direct access to professional-level instruction. The program is designed to support athletes at various stages of development, from beginners to those looking to elevate their performance.

As part of the experience, each registered participant will receive a ticket voucher to a Sea Bears home game during the 2026 season, adding a direct connection between camp participation and the live professional game environment.

A $5.25 registration fee is required to confirm participation. The fee has been implemented to reduce no-shows and ensure optimal planning for the session. All proceeds from the registration fee will be donated to a charitable initiative selected by Manitoba Blue Cross, reinforcing the program’s commitment to community impact.
