Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce details on the 2026 Provincial Team Tryouts for the upcoming summer. The tryouts for the program will take place May 8-10 at the Sport Manitoba Courts (aka Canada Games Sport for Life Centre), 145 Pacific Avenue in Winnipeg, MB.

The 2026 Manitoba Provincial Team Program will be forming a total of six teams. The 15U and 17U male teams will represent Manitoba at the Canada Basketball National Championships hosted in Regina, Saskatchewan. The 15U and 17U female teams will represent Manitoba at the Canada Basketball National Championship, hosted in Sherbrooke, Quebec. The 14U teams will be a development group, travelling to tournaments and competitions in July. The ages for the teams will be 17U (born in 2009 or later), 15U (born in 2011 or later) and 14U (born in 2012 or later) at both the male and female levels. Details on the Manitoba Provincial Team coaching staff announced earlier this year can be found HERE.

The teams will be selected from the May 8-10 open tryouts, and any Manitoba resident in one of the defined age categories is eligible and welcome to try out. Once the teams are chosen, they will train and compete together through June, July, and early August. Information can be found HERE.

Basketball Manitoba is hosting additional open Manitoba Provincial Team Identification Camps. These Identification Camps are not the formal tryouts for the Manitoba Provincial Team program. They are identification opportunities for athletes living outside of Winnipeg, and are being offered to provide athletes with additional consideration from Provincial Team Coaches who will be present. PROGRAM FEES: All players selected for one of the Provincial Teams will be assessed the $1,500 program fee for transportation, accommodations, meals and flight to the National Championships. The program fee also includes gear packages, training costs, and insurance. Basketball Manitoba subsidizes 50% of the total cost of the summer program. Additional fundraising, financial support programs, and payment options are available. Please note that this fee may change as the new Basketball Manitoa budget and finances are set heading into the spring.

SPECIAL TRYOUT NOTES

Age Advancement
Basketball Manitoba allows a younger player to play up an age for a Provincial Team. Any younger-age athlete who wishes to try out for an older-age program is welcome to do so. After the first session, the older coaching staff and Selection Committee can decide whether the younger athlete will continue in the older tryouts or be asked to return to the younger tryouts. Any athlete looking to try out at an older age must contact Dan Becker first.

Northwestern Ontario Residents
Those residing in Northwestern Ontario (west of and including Thunder Bay) can try out once they have first contacted the Basketball Manitoba office and then received written clearance from Basketball Ontario. Contact Adam Wedlake first before proceeding.

Provincial Team Selection Policy
Updated in November 2023, the Basketball Manitoba Board of Directors passed a motion on a new Provincial Team Selection Policy. As part of our commitment to providing a transparent and equitable Provincial Team selection procedure, there is a need for a consistent policy to protect the integrity of the Provincial Team program and its coaches. Basketball Manitoba has moved the Provincial Team tryouts to late May, avoiding much of the club basketball season. Athletes selected on one of the Manitoba Provincial Teams will be expected to fully commit to the program for all practices, training sessions and competitions. Winnipeg Sea Bears Sign Kevin Cross for 2026 CEBL Season

Winnipeg, MB, April 28, 2026 — The Winnipeg Sea Bears today announced the club has signed forward Kevin Cross Jr. for the upcoming Canadian Elite Basketball League season.

Cross Jr. arrives in Winnipeg off back-to-back stints in China. Most recently, he played for the Tianjin Pioneers in the 2025–26 season, averaging 9.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. Earlier in 2025, he played for Hunan Changsha, posting 24.2 points and 10.4 rebounds per game.

Prior to his time in China, Cross Jr. played for Zonkeys de Tijuana in 2025, averaging 16.5 points and 8.8 rebounds in 26 minutes per game. In the 2024–25 NBA G League season with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, he averaged 8.3 points and 5.0 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per game. He also played in the 2024–25 NBA Summer League with the Charlotte Hornets and signed with MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg in Germany’s BBL in 2023–24.

Cross Jr. has also represented his country on the international stage, suiting up for the United States at the World University Games in Chengdu, China, where he helped the team earn a bronze medal.

“Kevin is an experienced and versatile forward who can help us at multiple positions,” said Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault. “He brings toughness, playmaking and versatility to our group this summer.”

"I hear that Winnipeg has some of the best fans in the CEBL. I'm excited to be a part of the culture and bring home a lot of wins," Cross Jr. said.

Cross Jr. played five collegiate seasons across the University of Nebraska and Tulane University. At Nebraska in 2019–20, he ranked fifth among all Big Ten true freshmen in rebounding and seventh in scoring, appearing in all 32 games. At Tulane from 2020–24, he developed into one of the American Athletic Conference’s top forwards — earning AAC Most Improved Player of the Year and All-AAC Third Team honours in 2021–22, where he ranked first in the AAC in field goal percentage (.520) and first in defensive rebounds (5.85 per game). In 2022–23, he broke Tulane’s AAC semifinals record with 24 points and 13 rebounds against Wichita State, earning AAC Third Team All-Conference and NABC All-District 24 honours. He capped his collegiate career in 2023–24 averaging 17.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game.

Patrick Sumugat Named New Head Coach of CMU Blazers Women’s Basketball Team

The CMU Women's Basketball program has announced that Patrick Sumugat has been named the successor to head coach Sharlene Harding, who is leaving her post after two years with the program.

Sumugat assumes the role after already being involved with the team this past season as an assistant tasked with player development, and brings with him a wealth of experience at both the high school and club level in Manitoba, as well as in training high-level competitive athletes. The founder and head coach of Relentless Club Basketball, Sumugat also draws on his experience coaching the varsity girls program at Kildonan East Collegiate, and as the lead basketball skills trainer at Bout to Be Different (BTBD) Hoops in stepping up to the collegiate level head coaching role at CMU. Certified as a USA Basketball Youth Development Coach since 2023, Sumugat has quickly risen in the ranks of coaches in Winnipeg, building the connections necessary to recruit and continue to build the Blazers' program. His ties to the Filipino-Canadian community, including as head coach of the Basketball Federation of the Philippines (Canada) U16 girls team will also be a valuable connection in furthering the program's goals, in both bringing in and developing top local talent.

"Coach P has an undeniable passion for player development and proven success leading female athletes and teams at the local high school and club level," notes CMU Director of Athletics, Russell Willms. "The athletes here who have worked with Coach P can attest to his quality in these areas and we look forward to this new era of Blazers basketball under Coach P's influence."

Sumugat steps in as head coach as a new era of MCAC basketball is about to unfold. For the first time since the 2019/20 season, the Red River Rebels will be back in the league, bringing the conference up to four teams in basketball, also making the conference eligible for inclusion at the CCAA level for the first time, which the MCAC hopes to apply for this summer. If all goes to plan, this will create a pathway for the provincial champion to compete at a CCAA National Championships for the first time in basketball in the coming years.

Canada Basketball Launches Free Parent/Guardian eLearning Module to Support Youth Athlete Development

Basketball Manitoba is sharing a new national resource from Canada Basketball designed to strengthen the role of parents and guardians in youth basketball. The newly released eLearning module, “A Parent/Guardian’s Role in Youth Basketball,” is now available through Game Plan and The Locker in both English and French.

The interactive module is primarily aimed at parents and guardians but is also a valuable tool for coaches, clubs, officials, and anyone involved in the development of young athletes. The content focuses on practical, real-world scenarios and guided learning to help create positive, safe, and meaningful sport experiences.

Key learning areas include:

Supporting long-term athlete development
Promoting performance safety and overall well-being
Understanding how to effectively support athletes on game day
Encouraging stewardship, enjoyment, and a positive sport environment

The course emphasizes that everyone involved in the game plays a role in shaping the experience for young athletes and contributing to the long-term health of basketball in Canada.

The module is free, self-paced, and accessible at any time. Participants can immediately apply what they learn through built-in reflection tools and action planning resources.

Basketball Manitoba encourages all member clubs, coaches, and organizations to share this resource directly with parents and guardians within their programs to help reinforce a consistent, positive approach to youth sport.

REMINDER: 2026 WMBA Foundation Scholarship Now Open for Applications; Deadline April 30

The WMBA Foundation has announced that applications are now open for its 2026 Foundation Scholarship program.

The scholarship program will award two scholarships of up to $500 each to graduating students who have made a meaningful impact within the basketball community through their involvement with the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association. Eligible applicants include players, referees, coaches, and other basketball leaders who have demonstrated commitment, leadership, and a continued investment in the game.

The scholarships are intended to support graduating students as they move on to post-secondary studies, including college, university, or trade school. The program recognizes the important role young leaders play in strengthening the basketball community, whether that contribution has come on the court, on the bench, or behind the whistle.

Applicants must have been involved in WMBA and must be planning to continue their education after graduation. The application deadline is Thursday, April 30, 2026.

Winnipeg Sea Bears Re-Sign Local Kyler Filewich for 2026 CEBL Season

Winnipeg, MB, April 25, 2026 — The Winnipeg Sea Bears today announce the club has re-signed centre Kyler Filewich for the upcoming Canadian Elite Basketball League season. A Winnipeg native, Filewich returns to his hometown team for his second summer with the Sea Bears.

Born and raised in Winnipeg and a product of Vincent Massey High School, Filewich began his professional career with the Sea Bears during the 2025 CEBL season. He returns to the lineup having now completed his first full professional season overseas.

In the 2025–26 season, Filewich played for BK Olomoucko in the Czech Republic’s Maxa NBL. He led the team in rebounding at 9.1 per game while averaging 12.0 points and 2.2 assists. Filewich set a new career-high with 23 points, adding 13 rebounds, 6 assists, and shooting 68.8 percent from the field in a win over Slavia Praha, and also recorded a double-double of 21 points and 15 rebounds in a victory over Dubrava.

“It is great to get Kyler back for his second summer with the team,” said Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault. “We look forward to seeing the progress he has made after his first full season of professional basketball. He plays with a strong physical presence and we are excited to continue working with him this summer.”

“Excited and grateful for the opportunity to be back in Winnipeg for another season,” said Filewich. “I’m ready to keep working and do whatever I can to help the team win this summer.”

Filewich’s collegiate career spanned five seasons across Southern Illinois University and Wofford College. At Wofford, he was a three-year starter who saved his best for last — in his final season (2024–25), he averaged 11.7 points and led the team with 9.2 rebounds per game, earning SoCon Tournament MVP, First Team All-Tournament, and All-SoCon Third Team honours, as well as the CSC Academic All-District award. He helped lead Wofford to an NCAA Tournament berth in March 2025 (March Madness) and set the Division I program record with 21 career double-doubles. Filewich was also named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman team at Southern Illinois, where he ranked second in rebounding among MVC freshmen.

Nothin’ But Nets Campaign Back for 2026; Now Offering Free Rims

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce the return of an initiative to give away up to 100 FREE basketball nets to be installed on public courts across Manitoba! The "Nothin' But Nets" campaign aims to get every outdoor public basketball court outfitted with a new mesh this summer. Since launching this campaign in 2021, Basketball Manitoba has distributed over 525 free nets for public courts to the Manitoba basketball community.

NEW FOR 2026, Basketball Manitoba also has a limited number of new basketball rims available to the community to replace aging or damaged ones in public spaces. Due to their size and weight, the rims will need to be picked up from the Sport Manitoba building in Winnipeg once they have been arranged for. As rims require more work to install a net, these available rims must be installed by or with the permission of the facility owner or manager. More details are in the request form.

Basketball Manitoba is grateful to Linking Hope for the donation of the new rims for this initiative!

This campaign is connected to the Manitoba Basketball Outdoor Court Map project, in which only outdoor courts listed on the map are eligible for a free net or rim. The map feature currently includes detailed court specs for over 335 outdoor public courts (with over 840 individual hoops) in Manitoba. If your area's outdoor public court still needs to be added to the map, SUBMIT your specs to us first, then request your free nets or rim.

Basketball Manitoba will provide up to 2 high-quality basketball nets and one rim per court to the first 100 net requests we receive this summer. Those eligible under the terms of the campaign will receive the nets by mail shortly after submitting an online request and will then be responsible for mounting the items in their community. Proof that the nets or rim have been mounted, including a before-and-after photo, will be required for the individual to remain eligible to receive future nets or rims from Basketball Manitoba.

Providence Pilots Men’s Basketball Hosting Open ID Camp on May 13 at Sport Manitoba Courts

The Providence Pilots Men’s Basketball program has announced it will host its first Winnipeg Identification Camp and Tryout on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, as the program begins building toward its inaugural season in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

The session will run from 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm at the Sport for Life Centre (Court 3) in Winnipeg and is open to athletes in Grade 11 and above who are interested in competing at the collegiate level.

This ID Camp will serve as a key evaluation opportunity for athletes looking to earn a spot on the Pilots’ inaugural roster or to be identified for future recruitment classes. Players will be assessed on skill level, game play, athletic ability, and overall fit within the program’s system and culture.

With limited spots available, interested athletes are encouraged to act quickly. To register, players are asked to send a direct message to the Providence Pilots Men’s Basketball program with their full name and email address. Registration details will be provided directly.

The Pilots program is built around a “Culture of J.O.Y.”, emphasizing team-first play, personal development, and a competitive environment designed to prepare student-athletes for success both on and off the court.

Elevate Basketball Announces July 20–23, 2026 Summer Camp for Boys and Girls Ages 12–18

Elevate Basketball has announced details for its upcoming Summer Basketball Camp, scheduled to take place from July 20 to July 23, 2026. The four-day camp will offer structured on-court development opportunities for athletes ages 12 to 18, with dedicated beginner and advanced training groups for both boys and girls.

The camp will run daily in two time blocks, allowing participants to train in an environment suited to their skill level and development needs. Sessions will be held from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, providing flexibility for athletes and families while maintaining a focused training structure.

The program is designed to deliver skill development across key areas of the game, including ball handling, footwork, decision-making, and game application. Athletes will be grouped into the following divisions:

Girls Beginner (ages 12–18)

Winnipeg Sea Bears Sign Armani Chaney for 2026 CEBL Season

Winnipeg, MB, April 27, 2026 — The Winnipeg Sea Bears today announced the club has signed point guard Armani Chaney for the upcoming Canadian Elite Basketball League season.

Most recently, Chaney played for the Astros de Jalisco in Mexico during the 2025–26 season, averaging 13.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. Earlier that same season, he suited up for Depomaxx Harem Spor in Turkey, posting 20.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game.

In 2024–25, Chaney averaged 24.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game with the Kapfenberg Bulls in Austria, continuing to establish himself as one of the most prolific scorers in professional basketball.

In the 2023–24 season with the Newfoundland Rogues, Chaney put together one of the most dominant individual campaigns in BSL history — leading the team in both points and assists while averaging 30.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 8.1 assists, and 1.7 steals per game across 25 games. He capped the season with a career high 52-point playoff performance and was named both the 2024 BSL Most Valuable Player and a BSL First Team All-Star.

Prior to his professional career, Chaney played four seasons at Tennessee State University, where he developed into one of the program’s most reliable floor generals. In his junior season (2017–18), he led the team with 111 assists and 43 steals, ranking eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference in assists per game and sixth in steals per game. He was named OVC Co-Freshman of the Week in his debut season and consistently shot above 72 percent from the free throw line throughout his collegiate career.

Owen Unrau Commits to Manitoba Bisons Men’s Basketball for 2026-27 Canada West Season

The University of. Manitoba men's basketball program added another dynamic scorer today, announcing the commitment of 6'6" wing Owen Unrau. The Carberry, MB native was unstoppable at the AA level with Carberry Collegiate, averaging 42 points per game, 12.5 rebounds per game and, 3.2 blocks per game and 2.3 steals per game.

Unrau also holds the Carberry school record for points in a game, netting 68. Overall in his last two years in the sport across the club, high school and prep levels, (Evolve, Central Canada Prep, Carberry), he's averaged 23 points per game.

"Owen is an outstanding young man and coming from a great basketball family out in Carberry," said Bisons head coach Kirby Schepp. "He is just scratching the surface of his potential. We are really looking forward to seeing him develop over the next five years. Owen has a passion for the game and all the tools to be a great player in Canada West."

Unrau's efforts have earned him numerous accolades. He was named the 2026 Basketball Manitoba AA Player of the Year, is a three-time Provincial All-Star and earned a Team Canada U18 National Tryout invite at the start of the month. In the classroom, he's an honour roll student.

"From the first moment I met coach Kirby Schepp, I felt like he was the coach I was looking for," Unrau said.

"I find that he will be able to help me fully expand my game in every single way, with a strong work ethic in both the classroom and on the court. Basketball Manitoba has now created a new "Athlete Recommendation Form" that invites submissions from across the province for high-potential athletes who could be considered for future membership in the Manitoba Provincial Team program, the Targeted Athlete Strategy and/or the Targeted Athlete Program and Wheelchair Basketball opportunities. We are seeking support from the basketball community to help identify future talent and ensure we always represent the province at national and international events, including the Canada Games, with our best.

If you know of or coach an athlete currently aged 12 to 17 years old in Manitoba that you think could be a future member of either program, please complete and submit this form. This will be an ongoing feature of Basketball Manitoba's programming, and there is no deadline in place to submit this data, as it will be collected on a continual basis moving forward.

Basketball Manitoba reminds the basketball community to utilize its online video resource aimed at educating those who act as minor officials in basketball games throughout the province. The Basketball Manitoba Scoreboard Video Series features 3 different videos that detail the finer points of how to properly manage the score sheet, score clock, and shot clock. Each tutorial video runs for about 5-7 minutes and provides the most important points that a person in that role needs to know to perform their duties in a proper manner. With the school basketball season just getting underway, the timing of this new resource is perfect to help out your program now!

The videos have been uploaded to YouTube and can be viewed directly there or on the Basketball Manitoba, MABO, and StatTrackers websites. The presentations can also be seen on the Basketball Manitoba Scoreboard app. Future printings of the basketball score sheets used in Manitoba will also include references to the video series.

If you are responsible for finding and training minor basketball officials at your school or club, please share this information with all your people! The videos have been developed to be viewed on either a desktop, tablet or smartphone. An idea would be to have a new person doing your scorekeeping watch a video before the game on their smartphone.

Brandon Bobcats Announce 2026 Summer Basketball Camps for Boys and Girls

The Brandon University Bobcats have announced their 2026 Summer Basketball Camps, with programming designed to help young players build their skills, deepen their understanding of the game, and stay active on the court this summer.

Hosted at the Healthy Living Centre, the 2026 basketball camp lineup will offer a range of opportunities for boys and girls at different ages and stages of development. Led by Brandon University Bobcats coaches and student-athletes, the camps will provide a structured, positive training environment focused on both individual improvement and game-play experience.

The Boys Basketball Camp will run from Monday, July 27 to Friday, July 31, 2026. This day camp will focus on skill development and gameplay, with instruction from coaches and athletes on the Bobcats men’s basketball team. Campers will work on offensive and defensive concepts, while also developing core basketball fundamentals, including dribbling, shooting, and passing. The camp will run daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with an hour lunch break at noon.

Also running from July 27 to 31 will be the Evening Boys Basketball Camp, geared toward students in Grades 9 to 12. Led by head coach Gil Cheung and members of the Bobcats men’s basketball team, this camp will provide a fast-paced and engaging setting for players to sharpen their ball control, dribbling, passing, and shooting skills. Sessions will run each evening from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

The Girls Basketball Camp will take place from Monday, August 10, to Friday, August 14, 2026. Open to students in Grades 3 to 10, the camp will focus on skill development and game play under the direction of head coach Ilarion Bonhomme and players from the Bobcats women’s basketball team. Participants will be introduced to offensive and defensive systems while continuing to build a strong foundation in dribbling, shooting, and passing. The camp will run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm daily, with an unsupervised lunch break at noon. Participants are asked to bring non-marking shoes, a water bottle, and snacks.

The Evening Girls Basketball Camp will also run from August 10 to 14, with sessions intended for students in Grades 9 to 12. Coaches and players from the Brandon University women’s basketball program will lead participants through drills, instruction, and game situations tailored to each athlete’s skill level. The evening format is designed to provide dynamic teaching and practical repetitions in a supportive training environment.

Sea Bears Invite Local USPORTS Athletes to Training Camp

Winnipeg, MB, April 29, 2026 — The Winnipeg Sea Bears today announced the club has extended training camp invitations to two local players: Ryan Luke of the University of Winnipeg Wesmen and Ramogi Nyagudi of the University of Manitoba Bisons. Training camp runs April 30 to May 2, 2026.

"It's great to add Ramogi and Ryan to the training camp roster," said Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault. "As local guys that have had some experience around the team previously, it makes sense to have them bolster the depth of training camp and help them both get some experience as well."

A 6'7" forward and Winnipeg native, Ryan Luke wraps up his senior season with the Wesmen after coming through the ranks at John Taylor Collegiate. He averaged 10.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 28 minutes per game in his final season, posting a season-high 22 points against the Alberta Golden Bears and securing a season-high 13 rebounds against the Brandon Bobcats. Prior to his university career, Luke competed for Manitoba at the 2022 Canada Summer Games.

Luke was part of one of the most significant stretches in Wesmen history, helping the program reach the U Sports Final 8 national championship tournament in both 2023 and 2024, the team's first national appearances in over 30 years since the 1993-94 season.

"I'm very grateful for the opportunity to join the Sea Bears for training camp. This team is filled with proven talent and I'm looking forward to getting to work alongside this group," said Luke.

Ramogi Nyagudi is a 6'9" forward and first-year player with the Bisons, a Winnipeg native who attended St. Paul's High School. In his debut 2025–26 Canada West season, he averaged 11.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in 21.5 minutes. Nyagudi posted season highs of 33 points and 12 rebounds against MacEwan. He also recorded a season-high 5 blocks against the Winnipeg Wesmen. Nyagudi played at the NCAA Division 1 level for the St. Thomas Tommies in St. Paul, Minnesota for the 2024-2025 season. Prior to that, he represented Canada at the FIBA U18 Men's AmeriCup in 2024, where Canada defeated the Dominican Republic to secure bronze. Nyagudi averaged 4.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists during the tournament.

"Grateful to God and the coaching staff for the opportunity to compete against pros in my city. I'm very excited," said Nyagudi.

Winnipeg Sea Bears Invite Local Talents Elijah Mensah and Daren Watts to Training Camp

Winnipeg, MB, April 29, 2026 — The Winnipeg Sea Bears today announced the club has extended training camp invitations to two local players: Elijah Mensah of the University of Winnipeg Wesmen and Daren Watts of the University of Manitoba Bisons. Training camp runs April 30 to May 2, 2026.

Adding Daren and Elijah is great to have a couple more young local players be a part of the training camp experience," said Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault. "We are excited to see them compete and contribute each day in camp.”

Mensah, a 6'7" senior forward with the Wesmen, grew up in Winnipeg and attended Miles Macdonell Collegiate. In the 2025–26 Canada West season, he averaged 11.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 24.4 minutes per game, posting a season-high 21 points against the Regina Cougars and a season-high 11 rebounds against Manitoba.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to join training camp and I’m looking forward to learning and competing in an environment with elite talent,” said Mensah.

Watts, a 6’4” fifth-year guard with the Bisons, grew up in Winnipeg, and is a product of Miles Macdonell Collegiate. In the 2025–26 season, he averaged 18.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game in 31.3 minutes, posting a season-high 25 points against MacEwan and a season-high 12 rebounds against Regina. Watts was named a Canada West Second Team All-Star.

Manitoba High School 3x3 Basketball Championships Crown 2026 Provincial Champions Across All Divisions

Basketball Manitoba has announced the results of the 2026 Manitoba High School 3x3 Basketball Championships, held on Friday, April 24, 2026, at the Sport Manitoba Courts. The one-day event brought together high school teams from across the province for a full day of fast-paced 3x3 competition across multiple divisions.

A total of 10 half courts were utilized throughout the day, with teams competing in AAAA, AAA, A-AA boys and girls divisions, along with a wheelchair 3x3 co-ed division. Each team was guaranteed four games, creating a competitive and high-energy environment that highlighted skill, teamwork, and adaptability.

The following teams were crowned 2026 provincial champions:

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce the return of the Manitoba High School 3x3 Championships! The event will occur on Friday, April 24, 2026, at the Sport Manitoba Courts (aka Canada Games Sport for Life Centre). It will be open to high school basketball teams from around Manitoba at the AAAA, AAA, and A/AA classification levels. A co-ed wheelchair basketball division will be added for up to 4 teams in 2026. Sport wheelchairs will be provided on-site by Basketball Manitoba for use by teams at this level, if required.

To be eligible to play, the player must attend the high school they represent academically. Up to 10 indoor basketball courts will be set up inside the centre for the event. The divisions will be capped at 10 teams per division (4 at the wheelchair level). We anticipate the event will sell out, so register your 4-person team when registration opens!

Winnipeg Sea Bears Sign Davion Warren for 2026 CEBL Season

Winnipeg, MB, April 24, 2026 — The Winnipeg Sea Bears today announced the club has signed guard Davion Warren for the upcoming Canadian Elite Basketball League season.

Warren arrives in Winnipeg following a standout run with the BHC Knights in the Mongolian MBL, where he averaged 26.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game that led to his selection as the Best International Player of the 2025-26 MBA season. Prior to that, he spent the 2024–25 season with the Guangzhou Long Lions in China, posting 18.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 2.0 steals per game in 27.5 minutes.

Warren brings proven CEBL experience to Winnipeg, having previously suited up for the Edmonton Stingers in the 2023–24 season where he averaged 14.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. That same year, Warren spent time with the Long Island Nets in the NBA G League, shooting 52 percent from the field and recording a standout 34-point, 13-rebound, 6-assist performance in.

“We are excited about Davion joining us for this season,” said Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault. “He is a proven two-way player capable of impacting the game at both ends of the floor including creating offense for himself and others.”

Warren’s collegiate career spanned three schools, culminating at Texas Tech in 2021–22 where he averaged 9.4 points and led the team with 53 total steals, scoring double figures in 19 games including a season-high 23 against Kansas State. He helped Tech to a second-place Big 12 Tournament finish and a third-place ranking in the NCAA Tournament.

At Hampton University, Warren was one of the nation’s most decorated players, earning Big South Player of the Year, Big South First Team All-Conference, BCSN All-American, HBCU All-Star Team, and BoxToRow Co-National Player of the Year honours while ranking 13th nationally in scoring at 21.2 points per game. He finished his collegiate career with 1,944 points.

Warren started his College career with Olney Central College where he was awarded the MVP of Conference first team.

VAULT IS NOW OPEN: Basketball Manitoba and Victory Vault Sweepstakes have announced a new fundraising initiative to support amateur athletes and help address the rising cost of participation in basketball in Manitoba.

Launching in Manitoba on April 15, 2026, the Victory Vault Sweepstakes will offer Manitobans weekly chances to win cash prizes while directing ticket proceeds toward initiatives supporting young athletes and amateur sport organizations across the province.

The new initiative comes at a time when the cost of sport continues to be a growing barrier for many families. According to the 2024 Jumpstart State of Play Youth Report, 47 percent of people identified cost as the number one reason they do not participate in sport, making affordability the single largest barrier to play in Canada. Families are increasingly facing annual sport expenses that can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars per child, particularly in competitive programs.

Victory Vault Sweepstakes has been designed to help ease that burden by creating a new revenue stream for Manitoba’s Provincial Sport Organizations and their affiliated clubs. By generating additional funding, the program aims to help offset costs that might otherwise be passed on to athletes and their families, contributing to a more accessible and inclusive sport system across Manitoba.

Each week, participants can purchase sweepstakes tickets for a chance to win cash prizes. As part of the process, purchasers will be able to choose a participating Provincial Sport Organization (such as Basketball Manitoba) to support, so that every ticket sold directly benefits amateur sport in communities throughout Manitoba.

The initiative is being administered by Ascend Fundraising Solutions and is being launched in partnership with participating Manitoba Provincial Sport Organizations, including Athletics Manitoba, Baseball Manitoba, Basketball Manitoba, the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association, Manitoba Horse Council, Racquetball Manitoba, Sport Manitoba, and others.

Winnipeg Sea Bears Sign Jeremiah Tilmon Jr. for 2026 CEBL Season

Winnipeg, MB, April 22, 2026 — The Winnipeg Sea Bears today announced the club has signed forward Jeremiah Tilmon Jr. for the upcoming Canadian Elite Basketball League season.

The 6’10” forward is no stranger to the CEBL, having previously played for the Hamilton Honey Badgers in 2022 and 2023. In his debut CEBL season, Tilmon Jr. led the league in field goal percentage at 63.9 percent and ranked fifth in blocks per game while helping Hamilton claim the CEBL championship in 2022. He followed that up in 2023 by shooting 61.1 percent from the field, ranking second in the league and securing 1.5 blocks per game, ranking him fourth in league blocks.

"The addition of Jeremiah gives our group an experienced winner up front,” says Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault. “We are looking forward to his ability to play with physicality and lead from the centre position."

Most recently, Tilmon Jr. was selected to represent his country on the USA Basketball Men’s World Cup Qualifying Team in both 2025 and 2026.

Tilmon Jr. spent the 2025–26 NBA G League season with the Wisconsin Herd, averaging 6.1 points and 4.2 rebounds in 18.8 minutes per game. He has spent time with the Lakeland Magic, Raptors 905, and Greensboro Swarm, and has logged professional experience in Canada, China, the Dominican Republic, Japan, South Korea, Kuwait, Romania, and the United States across his six-year career.

In 2024 with the Greensboro Swarm, Tilmon Jr. secured a professional career high of 27 points and 16 rebounds.

Tilmon Jr. played collegiately at the University of Missouri from 2017 to 2021, finishing his career as the sixth Mizzou player ever to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 100 blocks. He earned Second Team All-SEC honours in his senior season and was named the SEC Player of the Week during his sophomore year.

RRC Students’ Association Announce Return of Rebels Basketball for Fall 2026 with Martinez and Mkanda Named Head Coaches

The RRC Polytech Students’ Association has announced the return of Red River Rebels basketball for the fall of 2026, marking the official relaunch of the institution’s men’s and women’s basketball programs after the program was discontinued in 2021.

The return of Rebels basketball is part of a broader varsity athletics revival being led by the RRC Polytech Students’ Association in partnership with RRC Polytech. The renewed model will bring back collegiate competition to campus and re-establish the Rebels brand within Manitoba’s post-secondary sport landscape.

As part of the relaunch, Ricardo Martinez has been introduced as the new head coach of the Rebels men’s basketball program for the 2026-27 season.

Martinez brings 30 years of coaching experience and a long history of athlete development at the school, club, and provincial levels. He is also the founder of Crossover Basketball Club and has built a strong reputation in Manitoba for leadership, mentorship, and community impact through basketball. His coaching background includes championship success and provincial medal finishes.

The women’s basketball program will be led by Buchi Mkanda, who has been named head coach for the 2026-27 season.

Mkanda brings 16 years of coaching experience and has developed a respected reputation in basketball development from the elementary level through to college competition. As the founder of Southside Basketball Academy, Mkanda has worked with athletes across multiple stages of the development pathway and has helped players move on to compete at the college and U SPORTS levels. He is a coach known for a hands-on style, with a strong emphasis on fundamentals, discipline, detail, and basketball IQ.

The return of the Rebels program represents a significant step forward for student-athletes at RRC Polytech and for the broader growth of collegiate basketball in Manitoba. The restored program is expected to provide new opportunities for athletes to compete at the post-secondary level while also rebuilding school spirit and campus engagement through varsity sport.

The revival also reconnects the institution with a program that had previously been part of Manitoba’s college basketball scene before varsity operations came to an end in 2021. With the return now set for this fall, attention will turn to roster building, program development, and preparation for the 2026-27 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) season.

The announcement of Martinez and Mkanda gives the returning Rebels programs experienced leadership on both sides and signals a serious commitment to building a strong and sustainable future for Red River basketball.

Westman Men’s Basketball League Tournament Set for May 30-31 at New Era School in Brandon

The Westman Men’s Basketball League has announced details for its upcoming league tournament, which will take place on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31 at New Era School.

The tournament will feature a maximum of eight teams competing over one weekend, with each team guaranteed four games. Organizers are positioning the event as a competitive opportunity for teams to come together, test themselves, and compete for the tournament title.

The entry fee for the event is $550 per team, and the deadline to enter is May 13.

With limited spots available, interested teams are encouraged to register early to secure their place in the tournament field.

On November 20, 2024, the Manitoba basketball community learned of the devastating news of the passing of Winnipeg Sea Bear captain Chad Posthumus. As his passing is still being felt in the community, Basketball Manitoba and the Winnipeg Sea Bears have partnered to present a new award in Chad’s memory. The Chad Posthumus Award provides two $1500 scholarships recognizing Grade 12 basketball players in Manitoba who demonstrate basketball excellence, resilience in overcoming adversity, academic dedication, and kindness to others. This award is to be used as financial assistance towards a post-secondary education for the upcoming school year.

Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum Announce Class of 2026 Inductees

The Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum announced its Class of 2026 inductees during a media conference held on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at the University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre.

The announcement recognized an accomplished group of players, builders, and teams whose contributions helped shape the history and growth of basketball in Manitoba at the high school, university, provincial, national, and professional levels.

All individual inductees, along with representatives of the inducted teams, were recognized during the event, which took place in front of the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum at the Duckworth Centre.

The Class of 2026 included three players, three builders, and two team inductees. Together, they represented generations of excellence in Manitoba basketball and reflected the depth of achievement that continues to define the sport in the province.

The official induction ceremony is scheduled for the evening of Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg.

PLAYERS

Uzoma Asagwara

Uzoma Asagwara was announced as a player inductee following an outstanding basketball career that included success at the high school, university, and national team levels.

A graduate of Collège St. Norbert Collegiate, Asagwara starred with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen from 2002 to 2007 and established themself as one of the top players in the country during their university career. They were a two-time CIS/U SPORTS All-Canadian and a two-time Canada West First Team All-Star in 2006 and 2007.

In 2007, Asagwara led the nation in scoring at 28.5 points per game and was previously named the University of Winnipeg Female Athlete of the Year in 2006. They also represented Canada twice at the national team level, including at the 2007 Pan Am Games in Rio.

Uzoma’s induction recognizes an elite playing career marked by national honours, high-level production, and important representation of Manitoba basketball on the international stage.

Anne Schimnowski-Boyko

Anne Schimnowski-Boyko was announced as a player inductee in recognition of a decorated university career and her place among the province’s top female players of her era.

A graduate of Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, Schimnowski-Boyko played with the University of Manitoba Bisons from 1989 to 1994. During that time, she earned national and conference honours, including selection to the CIAU/CIS All-Rookie Team and to the GPAC All-Star Team in 1990 and 1994.

Her strongest season came in 1994 when she averaged 21.7 points per game and earned CIAU/CIS All-Canadian honours. She also represented Manitoba twice as a member of the Manitoba provincial teams.

Anne’s induction recognizes sustained excellence at the university level and a career that stood out in Manitoba basketball history.

Chad Posthumus

Chad Posthumus was announced posthumously as a player inductee in recognition of a remarkable basketball journey that took him from Manitoba high school courts to university basketball, professional leagues worldwide, and the Canadian National Team.

A graduate of River East Collegiate, Posthumus was named an All-Manitoban in 2009 and represented Manitoba on provincial teams for five years. He continued his career at UBC, Howard College, and Morehead State University in Kentucky, where he went on to lead the NCAA in rebounding.

He later played professionally in Argentina, Japan, and China, while also representing Canada internationally. In recent years, he returned home to continue his professional career with the Winnipeg Sea Bears of the CEBL.

Chad’s induction recognizes both his outstanding accomplishments on the court and the lasting impact he made on basketball in Manitoba and across Canada.

BUILDERS

Earl Barish

Earl Barish was announced as a builder inductee for his major role in professional basketball in Manitoba and for his long-standing commitment to growing the game in Winnipeg.

Barish was the founder, president, and majority owner of the Winnipeg Cyclone, the professional team that played in Winnipeg from 1995 to 2001 as a member of the International Basketball Association and later the Continental Basketball Association. He also served as President of the IBA and as league liaison to the NBA from 1995 to 1999.

Beyond his executive leadership in professional basketball, Barish supported broader basketball development in the community, including programs that enabled many local young players to attend Cyclone games at no charge.

Earl’s induction recognizes vision, leadership, and a significant contribution to the profile and accessibility of basketball in Manitoba.

Ted Fardoe

Ted Fardoe was announced as a builder inductee for his decades of service as an administrator, coach, and grassroots leader in Winnipeg basketball.

Fardoe served on the executive board of the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association for 14 years, including 11 as President. During that time, he helped lead the implementation of Respect in Sport, Fair Play, and coaching development initiatives.

He also played a major role in basketball facility development by managing the construction of six outdoor basketball courts, one in each district of Winnipeg. In addition, he was one of the founders of the Junior Bisons club and coached in the WMBA as well as at Oak Park and John Taylor Collegiate.

Ted’s induction recognized a legacy built on leadership, access, development, and long-term service to the game.

Bryan Kornberger

Bryan Kornberger was announced as a builder inductee in recognition of one of the most accomplished coaching careers in Manitoba high school basketball history.

Best known for his 40 years as head coach of the Varsity Girls team at Glenlawn Collegiate, Kornberger led the Lions to 19 provincial Final Four appearances, 12 provincial championship game appearances, and eight MHSAA AAAA provincial championships.

He also coached Team Manitoba provincial teams 10 times, winning two medals, including a gold medal in 1991. Over the years, many of his athletes advanced to successful university and national team careers, and he contributed to coach development through clinics and mentorship.

Bryan’s induction recognizes not only an exceptional record of success but also a lasting influence on athletes, programs, and coaches across Manitoba.

Glenboro School Panthers Varsity Girls

The Glenboro School Panthers Varsity Girls were announced as team inductees for a championship era that established the program as one of the most successful small-school girls basketball teams in Manitoba history.

The Panthers captured MHSAA Provincial A Girls Championships in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009, completing a remarkable stretch of sustained excellence.

Their induction recognizes a team era defined by consistency, championship success, and a lasting place in Manitoba high school basketball history.

Brandon University Bobcats Men

The Brandon University Bobcats Men were announced as team inductees in recognition of an outstanding run of national success during the early 1980s.

The Bobcats earned medals at the CIAU/CIS national championship tournament in four seasons, winning silver in 1980 and 1984 and bronze in 1982 and 1983.

Their induction recognizes one of the strongest stretches in program history and honours a team legacy built on national-level excellence and a major contribution to the reputation of Manitoba university basketball.

The Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum continues its mission to recognize deserving players, teams, and builders for their outstanding achievements in basketball while preserving and showcasing the rich history of the game in Manitoba.

The Class of 2026 will be formally inducted on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg. Dinner tickets will go on sale later this spring.

Winnipeg Sea Bears Announce 2026 Coaching Staff Ahead of 2026 Season

Winnipeg, MB, April 20, 2026 — The Winnipeg Sea Bears today announced the coaching staff for the upcoming 2026 season. Under the leadership of Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault, Alex Campbell steps in as Lead Assistant Coach and Assistant General Manager and Jeremy Wielenga, Ilarion Bonhomme and Steven Wesley have been named Assistant Coaches.

Campbell served as lead assistant coach with the Saskatchewan Huskies over the 2025–26 season prior to joining the Sea Bears coaching staff. As a player, Campbell was a member of the league’s inaugural 2019 championship team with Saskatchewan and was named the first-ever CEBL Finals MVP that year. Campbell joined the Sea Bears in 2024 and made league history as the first Canadian to reach 1,000 career CEBL points on a buzzer-beater at Canada Life Centre, and he remains the league’s all-time leader in three-pointers made.

“I’m excited about the staff we’ve put together for this summer,” said Head Coach and General Manager Mike Raimbault. “It’s a group that understands what’s required, and there’s a strong mix of experience and skill sets that will help us stay consistent and prepared all season.”

Wielenga joins the Winnipeg Sea Bears following a lengthy collegiate coaching career as head coach at Keyano College since 2017. During his tenure, he compiled an impressive 131–27 record. Wielenga led Keyano to a CCAA National Championship in 2024, along with ACAC Championships in 2024 and 2026. His program has also secured ACAC silver medals in 2022 and 2025, and a bronze medal finish in 2019. He was named CCAA Coach of the Year in 2022 and earned ACAC Coach of the Year honours in 2020, 2022, and 2023. Prior to Keyano, he held assistant coaching roles at the University of Winnipeg, Lakehead University, and Brandon University. A native of Brandon, Manitoba, Wielenga is known for his strong leadership and player development.

Bonhomme currently serves as head coach of the Brandon University women’s basketball program, building a competitive culture within Canada West. A native of Washington, D.C., Bonhomme began his collegiate career at Brandon University, earning Canada West Rookie of the Year honours in 2011–12, before transferring to the University of Manitoba where he helped lead the program to a U SPORTS Final 8 appearance. He went on to play six years professionally across Europe and Australia. Off the court, Bonhomme holds a master’s degree in Human Resource Management with a focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion, and is currently pursuing a PhD focused on gender equity in sport.

Wesley joins the staff with a focus on player development following a professional playing career. He currently serves as an assistant coach with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen and as head coach of the Manitoba 14U Provincial Team. Wesley is also the founder of World Class Hoopers, one of Winnipeg’s fastest-growing youth basketball development programs. He has played an instrumental role in the development of Northstar Prep and continues to be actively involved in the program.
