Episode 1 – Origins of an RPG Podcast

1. What is this podcast about?

The crew brainstorms about what this gaming podcast should even be about in the first place. Jay makes the distinction between more serious gamers and casual gamers. A bunch of geek look down on other geeks

2. ‘Ripper’ is in the House

One of our hosts bears a striking resemblance to the GI-Joe character Ripper–mo-hawk and all. Sal shares a story with us about an encounter he had with a woman that commented on his unique hair style.

3. Potential Podcast Titles

Titles in the running are Full on Geek, Bend Bars/Lift Gates, and . We take a vote and it stands that Bend Bars/Lift Gates is the determined title.

4. Diaspora by VSCA

Tayo talks about the RPG Diaspora. It is a science-fiction that could be compared to Star Trek. a unique aspect of Diaspora is in the system’s unique method of star cluster generation. The rest of the system itself is based heavily on FATE, a system known for being very narrative in flavor.

5. The Family Tree of RPG’s

An attempt is made to describe the history of Role-Playing Games to Bobert. Gary Gygax and the birth of Dungeons and Dragons is mentioned, as well as other early games such as Tunnels and Trolls. There is some discussion about the difference between a more narrative rule-set vs. something more crunchier.

6. The Dungeon’s and Dragon’s Movie

The Dungeon’s and Dragon’s Movie (2000) is brought up as well as some of the principle actors. It is mentioned that New Line cinema is who release the D&D movie and it was announced they would also be behind the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Bobert believes that the history behind the Lord of the Rings as literature means the studio gave it more credence.

7. Amber: Diceless

Sal espouses the greatness that is the Amber Diceless RPG. We learn how the diceless mechanic works and about how there is minor undertones of PVP in the system. Players have to to bid on how much a certain attribute matters to their character. This leads into a short discussion about the concept of PVP in tabletop RPGs.

8. The Gaming Chicken and the Egg

We contemplate the question of how gaming interacts with the rest of our lives. Does gaming shape our lives, or do our lives shape gaming? We find out where the hosts stand.

Our Collective Gaming Histories

From elementary school tables, to our first forays into a dungeon. The cast discusses how they first fell into gaming and some of their earliest memories about the hobby they love.

9. The war of words over the movie Inception begins

A rather long discussion about the movie Inception. we give a gamer’s take on the movie, and movies like it. There are conflicting views on if the movie gave away too much or explained too much about how the technology worked. There is also some discussion about the characters and their development.
