Funded by BBSRC and delivered by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Enterprise Fellowships are designed to encourage the development of a new business, building on previously funded BBSRC research, around a technological idea developed by the Fellow (either individually or with others) and within which the Fellow would be expected to play a leading (though not necessarily the leading) role.

BBSRC and MRC are collaborating with the British Pharmacological Society (BPS) to provide additional funding to BBSRC- and MRC-funded studentships to support research training in integrative mammalian biology.

In 2009, BBSRC and National Institute on Aging (NIA) funded six grants via the Joint Collaborative Research on the Biology of Ageing Initiative (see related links) whereby NIA funded the US partners (total $3M) and BBSRC funded the UK partners (total £2.6M). To continue to encourage UK-US collaborations, BBSRC and NIA have established a co-funding scheme whereby BBSRC will support the UK component of joint UK-US projects submitted to the NIA grant funding system. Currently, up to £2M is available for this scheme.

Multidisciplinary research centres in synthetic biology - Expressions of interest deadline: 28 May 2013, 4pm

Following the announcement of £600M capital investment for Research Councils in the autumn 2012 statement, BBSRC and EPSRC will shortly announce a joint call for proposals for multidisciplinary Synthetic Biology Research Centres (anticipated early June).
The full call is preceded by this 'Expression of Interest' (EoI) stage where interested parties are strongly encouraged to submit a short application to BBSRC by 28 May 2013, 4pm. Completed forms should be submitted to SynBioRC@bbsrc.ac.uk under the subject heading ‘SBRC Expression of Interest Form’.

Biotechnology young entrepreneurs scheme, application deadline: 31 May 2013

Teams benefit from entrepreneurial awareness training, and present their plans for hypothetical businesses to real entrepreneurs, financiers and industrialists. The competition is supported by a large number of companies and co-organised by BBSRC and UNIEI.

Super Follow-on funding - deadline 5 June 2013

The Follow-on funding programme is designed to support the translation of fundamental research funded by us into practical application, including commercialisation. The aim of the programme is to help researchers maximise the societal and economic benefits of their research.

This call seeks to build on the combined strengths of academic research groups within India and the UK to work together on collaborative multidisciplinary projects involving sequencing, genomics and bioinformatics for crop improvement. BBSRC and DBT have earmarked up to £5M each for this call, for projects up to a maximum duration of three years.

Trees have significant impacts on rural and urban landscapes and contribute to our heritage, ecosystems, rural economy and wellbeing. Trees can also help to mitigate climate change by capturing and storing carbon. Research into the preservation of the health of trees, woodlands and forests, and associated interactions with the environment, economy and society has the potential to be of great benefit.

Diet and Health Research Industry Club (DRINC) call - deadline: 3 July 2013, 4pm

Applications must fit with the DRINC research challenges, as described in the call text (please see in downloads)
Applications must fall within BBSRC's portfolio (see related links), but may also include aspects of MRC's, EPSRC's and/or ESRC's remit
It is likely that the aims of this club can best be achieved by an interdisciplinary approach. Therefore, collaborative applications which bring together groups with relevant expertise or experience to move research closer to application are particularly encouraged
Projects are typically 3-4 years in duration but projects up to 5 years will be considered

'Stand-alone' LINK - apply as per next responsive mode

LINK applications involve collaborative research with at least one company and one science-base partner (projects with SMEs are particularly favoured) where at least 50% of the full economic cost of the project comes from industry. Applications should be for pre-competitive research that would not be undertaken in this form without LINK support.
