“We see participating in Shelf2Life Program as a key component of our digital library program,” noted Lori Phillips, Associate Dean of Libraries at the University of Wyoming. “We are excited to be able to make our resources available to the public and our students and faculty through BCR’s Shelf2Life program.”

By participating in the Shelf2Life program, the University of Wyoming Libraries have added another avenue to meet their goal of supporting the educational, research and service missions of the University, providing access to a broad range of information resources to the University's academic community, regardless of location.

BCR’s Shelf2Life Program is an exciting opportunity for libraries and cultural heritage institutions to make their book collections available in digital format─without the expense of equipment and significant staff time. They can share their collections with new and existing audiences, increasing the visibility, use and recognition of their important collections.

To see some of the titles that are now available, visit the Amazon.com website. Under the advanced search capability, search for BCR under Publishers. With 360 Counter, your library can do all that and take advantage of a special offer available only through December 18.

Serials Solutions is offering BCR members a special end-of-year discount that is available in addition to the normal BCR member discount. New subscribers to the 360 Counter e-Resource Assessment Service also get three months free and an extra 10 percent discount.

360 Counter helps a library know how much each e-resource is being used and helps staff make intelligent decisions about which resources to keep, which to cut and which packages to renegotiate. The service helps reduce costs, helps staff make more informed collection development decisions and ultimately provides a better experience for patrons.

360 Counter quickly performs cost-per-use reporting and analysis, dramatically reducing the time it takes to process and analyze usage data received from COUNTER-compliant reports. The service aggregates data, inserts costs, associates subjects, standardizes titles, calculates usage and costs and automates analysis. Reporting can be customized based on the criteria that’s most important for a particular library.

360 Counter enables a library to:

Aggregate Project COUNTER and SUSHI-compliant reports from providers

View journal usage across titles and providers

Track usage and access over time

Report usage, costs and ROI

Archive reports and cost-per-use information

Visit the Serials Solutions website to learn more about 360 Counter, and read a case study to see how 360 Counter was used to analyze a large university’s collection and improve returns on its eResource budget.

Proposals for presentations and poster sessions are being accepted through February 12, 2010.

We’ve all heard that collaboration is important, but how can academic libraries forge lasting, effective partnerships both within and outside their institutions? What makes some partnerships succeed and others fail?

Come share your successes, failures, research and innovative ideas related to academic library collaboration. We’re particularly interested in proposals that address:

Collaboration to expand library services or improve student success

Collaboration to develop Web 2.0 applications

Strategies for building and maintaining partnerships

Inter-institutional collaboration

Institutional barriers to collaborative efforts, and how to overcome them

Assessing the success of collaborative efforts

Collaboration with non-library partners

Presentation Options:

Concurrent Presentations: A speaker or team of speakers presents for 45 or 75 minutes, with a 15-minute Q&A session after the presentation. Presentations that involve discussion, audience participation or activities are strongly encouraged.

Poster Sessions: A graphical presentation (paper or digital) of research results, case studies, projects or ideas. Poster presenters will discuss their work with attendees during the poster session time slot (likely to be 1 hour long).

Details:
Presentation and poster proposals will be reviewed and competitively selected by a committee of academic librarians.

Proposal Requirements:

Names and full contact information of presenter(s)

Title of presentation or digital poster session

Abstract and brief outline (200 words max)

Desired presentation length (45 or 75 minutes) or poster session

Submit proposals using the online form on the CALC website.

Proposals are due by February 12, 2010. You’ll be notified about the status of your proposal by March 12, 2010.

Authors Colin Legerton and Jacob Rawson journey more than 14,000 miles by bus and train to the farthest reaches of the country to meet the minority peoples who dwell there, talking to farmers in their fields, monks in their monasteries, fishermen on their skiffs and herders on the steppe.

In Invisible China, they engage in a heated discussion of human rights with Daur and Ewenki village cadres; celebrate Muhammad’s birthday with aging Dongxiang hajjis who recount the government’s razing of their mosque; attend mass with old Catholic Kinh fishermen at a church that has been forty years without a priest; hike around high-altitude Lugu Lake to farm with the matrilineal Mosuo women; and descend into a dry riverbed to hunt for jade with Muslim Uyghur merchants. As they uncover surprising facts about China’s hidden minorities and their complex position in Chinese society, they discover the social ramifications of inconsistent government policies—and some deep human truths as well.

Publishers Weekly hails it as "a spectacular achievement reminiscent of early 20th-century anthropological monographs by Margaret Mead and Ruth Benedict."

The eBook of the Month showcases new and noteworthy titles available from NetLibrary. Each month, NetLibrary selects a new featured title and provides free, unlimited access through the authenticated homepages of more than 13,000 public, academic and special libraries. To access each month's eBook as well as a tool kit of free promotional materials that can be downloaded and personalized for your library, visit the NetLibrary eBook of the Month resources webpage.

This article-level metadata joins similar content such as the GPO Monthly Catalog, ArticleFirst, Medline, ERIC and the British Library Inside Serials. The ScienceDirect content corresponds to 1,800 journals, 150 book series and more than 1.3 million records.

WorldCat has added Goodreads reviews to help users evaluate materials with fellow readers’ comments. Users will find Goodreads reviews in the Reviews section alongside WorldCat, WeRead and Amazon reviews.
When:
November 11, 2009
1:00 - 2:30 p.m. (Eastern Time)

About the Webinar:
The scope and scale of metadata repositories continues to grow, with increasingly heterogeneous data and complexity both on the ingest side (e.g., bibliographic metadata) and in inter- and intra-organizational exchange of usage, patron, purchase, and accounting data. While data format and exchange standards are a given, how do policies, implementations, and standards interact? What are some examples of effective alignment of standards, policies and implementation, and what challenges remain?

Agenda:
Data quality, policy, and large-scale data flows
How do regional consortia establish and implement policies to allow them to cope with increasing amounts of data in a widening variety of formats?

Hilary Newman, Vice President of Implementation Services, Innovative Interfaces, Inc.

Academic library perspective
Individual research libraries provide local, customized services for their audiences that are based upon large quantities of data — hopefully of high quality and supported by easy-to-use tools and processes provided by vendors and consortia. What are the successes, stress points, and failures from the perspective of the academic library?

The Essential 20th-century reading list outlines writings on contemporary music, covering composer tracts to periodicals to historical and theoretical studies published during the era. Hyperlinks are provided to help users explore related content in Grove Music Online.

A new feature, search within this article, is particularly useful for users accessing large articles spread over multiple pages, allowing them to search for terms within a single article, such as large country articles and articles on families. Look for the search within this article box near the top left of each entry. Simply click on the plus sign [+] to open the search box, enter the search term(s) and click search. The search box then expands to display a convenient list of search hits along with headings to contextualize them.

Oxford University Press is asking subscribers to participate in a 10-15 minute survey to assess how they can best serve the research needs of students and scholars using the reference database. Take the survey and be entered into a drawing to win one of two Amazon Kindles.

For additional information about Grove Music Online and other Oxford University Press reference resources, visit the BCR website or contact BCR's Chris Cook (ccook@bcr.org).

Initially, the Library is contributing materials from a collection of under-utilized historical items, including large format music score and history, literature and fiction monographs, as well as a series of one-act drama scripts from the early 1900s.

As these collections are digitized, they will be available in the library's online catalog to Drake-affiliated users.

"The participation of Drake University Library in BCR's Shelf2Life program supports the Library's role in teaching and learning, promoting the aims of information literacy and providing new methods of accessing important content," commented Rod Henshaw, Dean of Library. "The Library is excited to be able to extend use of its collections into the wider community through the Shelf2Life eBooks and print-on-demand program."

The goal of BCR's Shelf2Life program is to help libraries and cultural heritage organizations share their collections with new and existing audiences. By providing organizations with the tools to digitize and widen access to their collections, BCR's Shelf2Life program helps increase the visibility, use and recognition of their important collections.

The partnership will combine those areas in which each organization is expert to meet the growing need for libraries to offer new and innovative online continuing education courses, while meeting the challenges of the rapidly changing library environment and shrinking budgets.

BCR brings a professional staff of trainers in traditional librarianship, with broad perspective and experience of both the library and cultural heritage environment, as well as experience in creating, implementing and delivering training courses for the online community. BCR will provide the technical infrastructure to support both online and self-paced learning.

LITA's membership base brings an array of expertise in library standards, emerging technologies and best practices that can be utilized to bring practitioners into the forefront for passing on their expertise to the rest of the community. Michelle Frisque, LITA President, said "I am excited by this new partnership with BCR which will allow LITA to provide a wider range of educational opportunities to our members."

Beyond the advantages of being able to learn where and when it is most practical, the membership of both organizations will benefit from receiving high-quality instruction immediately applicable to the operation of their libraries, as well as extending the variety of courses available through each organization. All members of the BCR/LITA community will have a unique opportunity for continuing education, from the basics to emerging technologies, taught by high-quality subject matter experts.

This new partnership is the first time a multistate consortium such as BCR and an ALA division have combined to undertake a broad-based continuing education program for their respective members.

Questions about the program can be directed to Regan Harper, BCR's director, Education & OutReach, or Mary Taylor, LITA executive director.

South will be working directly with BCR's Digital and Preservation Services director, Liz Bishoff, who is the Principal Investigator, as well as project faculty and staff from BCR, Lyrasis and OCLC Digital Programs.

As project coordinator for the Digital Preservation for Digital Collaboratives project, South will be responsible for establishing an appropriate project framework to implement the two-year NEH grant; creating and executing the workshop promotional program; coordinating monthly post-workshop activities; arranging for workshop facilities and appropriate local arrangements; and assisting with project evaluations.

In early 2009, the National Endowment for the Humanities awarded $218,154 to BCR to support workshops on digital preservation developed specifically for leaders of collaborative digitization programs. The workshops are designed to help digital collaboratives and their members develop the capacity for assuming responsibility for long-term accessibility of digital collections under their stewardship.

South has several years of reference and collection development experience in libraries and archives, including her most recent position at the Texas Legislative Reference Library. Prior to becoming a librarian, she worked in content production and project management at Microsoft. South earned her MSI with a focus on Archives & Records Management at the University of Michigan and her BA from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.
