Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged the public to refrain from attempts to spread confusion about the referendum and the July Charter for political purposes. He stated that some individuals and groups are trying to divert the referendum into a different direction, aiming to create instability in the country. However, the BNP government is working with the people’s mandate and is committed to implementing all conditions of the July Charter.

He made these remarks on Monday (April 27) afternoon while addressing a public rally organized by the District BNP at Jashore Eidgah Maidan as the chief guest. A large number of activists and supporters from various surrounding areas participated in the rally.

The Prime Minister alleged that an interest group is deliberately spreading propaganda by labeling the government as ‘fascist’ and creating confusion about the public’s mandate. However, he claimed that the people of the country have understood this and are on the side of the BNP.

He further stated that some groups are creating various obstacles to hinder development activities. He also warned that strict measures would be taken against anyone who creates anarchy under the guise of democratic movement.

During his visit to Jashore, the Prime Minister inaugurated the re-excavation of the Ulashi Canal and the construction of the 500-bed hospital building of Jashore Medical College. He stated that the government is giving special importance to the development of the south-western region—this area will be economically strengthened further through improvements in drainage systems, healthcare, and infrastructure development.

Regarding the health sector, he said that the Jashore Medical College project, approved during Khaleda Zia’s tenure, had been stalled for a long time, and the current government has taken the initiative to implement it.

On women’s empowerment and social protection, he announced plans to gradually include millions of women across the country by expanding the Family Card program. Initiatives are also being taken to introduce LPG cards. Free education for girls up to graduation and special scholarships for meritorious students will also be arranged.

Regarding support for the agricultural sector, the Prime Minister said that Farmer Cards have been introduced, and agricultural loan waiver programs have begun. Approximately 1.2 million farmers will be freed from debt in phases, and all necessary assistance will be provided to increase production.

Tarique Rahman stated that the country’s closed factories would be reopened, and employment would be increased through the establishment of new industries. Additionally, the government is taking initiatives to expand overseas employment opportunities.

Announcing the government’s plans for sports development, the Prime Minister said that a special program to develop professional athletes would begin on May 2. In the first phase, 500 athletes will receive training and recognition.

At the public rally, he sought unity and cooperation from people of all walks of life for nation-building, stating, “If the people of the country remain united, no evil force can stop the progress of development. We are working to build a prosperous, modern Bangladesh.”

Presiding over the rally was District BNP President Advocate Syed Saberul Haque Sabu. Among those who spoke were BNP Vice Chairman Professor Nargis Begum, Health Minister Sardar Sakhowat Hossain Bokul, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit, along with other district and central BNP leaders.

Demands have been raised in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) for the establishment of shelters and lightning rods in the haor regions and northeastern parts of the country to prevent lightning-related fatalities. In response, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu stated that the government is giving this issue the highest priority.

He made this statement on Monday (April 27) during a discussion on an urgent public interest notice, raised by Sunamganj-1 Member of Parliament Kamruzzaman Kamrul, in accordance with Rule 71 of the Rules of Procedure of the National Parliament. Speaker Hafiz উদ্দিন Ahmad presided over the session.

The Relief Minister noted that Bangladesh is one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries, experiencing various natural, weather-related, and man-made calamities. He specifically highlighted that due to the relatively higher intensity and frequency of lightning in the haor regions and northeastern areas, the government is paying special attention to this matter.

He further informed that the government is emphasizing research and science-based initiatives to implement effective measures against lightning.

During the discussion, MP Kamruzzaman Kamrul mentioned that NASA and the University of Maryland identified the haor region as a prominent lightning hotspot in 2017. He pointed out that lightning incidents are more prevalent from March to May, which poses a significant risk to the people of the haor region, as this period coincides with their peak agricultural activities.

In the first 25 days of the current month of April, expatriate income (remittance) totaling approximately $2.578 billion has arrived in the country, which is almost equivalent to $2.58 billion.

This information was disclosed in the latest updated report by Bangladesh Bank on Sunday (April 26).

Arif Hossain Khan, spokesperson for the central bank, stated that remittance inflow has remained positive until the 25th of this month. A significant growth has been observed this time, compared to $2.251 billion received during the same period last year.

According to Bangladesh Bank data, from July of the 2025-26 fiscal year to April 25, the country received a total remittance of $28.787 billion. This marks a 19.80 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year.

Previously, in March, the country received $3.75505 billion in remittances, which is the highest in the country’s history for a single month. Additionally, expatriates sent $3.02076 billion in February and $3.17094 billion in January.

The positive trend continued towards the end of last year as well. $3.2267 billion in remittances arrived in December and $2.88952 billion in November.

Sector insiders believe that various government initiatives to send remittances through legal channels and a market-oriented dollar exchange rate are encouraging expatriates to send money via banking channels. This has a positive impact on the country’s overall economy.

As part of efforts to reduce special privileges for public representatives, the opportunity for Members of Parliament (MPs) to import duty-free cars has been cancelled. From now on, MPs, like ordinary citizens, will have to pay the prescribed duties and taxes when importing vehicles.

A bill to this effect was passed in the session of the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) on Sunday (April 26) afternoon. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikrom) presided over the session.

Until now, Members of Parliament enjoyed the privilege of importing luxury cars from abroad without any duties or taxes. This new bill has completely revoked that special privilege.

According to government sources, this decision was made with the aim of reducing state expenditure and lessening the disparity between public representatives and ordinary citizens. Most members present in the session applauded the decision when the bill was passed.

Earlier, the first session of the Thirteenth National Parliament resumed at 3:23 PM with the recitation of the Holy Quran, presided over by the Speaker.

It is noteworthy that for several decades, Members of Parliament had been importing cars with duty-free privileges, which had drawn criticism from the general public at various times. The new decision marks the end of that long-standing practice.

Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has announced that an additional 1,950 megawatts (MW) of electricity is expected to be added to the national grid by the end of April. This is hoped to somewhat normalize the existing power rationing situation amidst the ongoing heatwave.

Engineer Rezaul Karim, Chairman of BPDB, stated, “We expect to receive 1,950 MW of electricity from Adani Power, Chattogram’s SS Power, and the Patuakhali-based RNPL joint venture within this month.”

He mentioned that these units are coal-fired, and although production had ceased at three power plants in Bangladesh, their operations are set to resume as a coal-carrying vessel is expected to arrive at Payra Seaport on Sunday.

The BPDB chief added that Adani Power, a foreign company supplying electricity in Bangladesh, had kept one of its two units closed for maintenance for the past few weeks. However, it is scheduled to restart from today.

BPDB officials informed that, as per the scheduled plan, 750 MW of electricity from Adani will be added to the national grid from April 26. Meanwhile, SS Power and RNPL are expected to resume supplying 600 MW each from April 28.

RNPL is a joint venture between Bangladesh’s state-owned Rural Power Company Limited (RPCL) and China’s state-owned Norinco. The plant is expected to generate 600 MW of electricity from April 28.

Meanwhile, rising temperatures are forcing many people to stay indoors, highlighting the vulnerability of urban areas alongside the strained energy system. Concurrently, the Meteorological Department has reported that a heatwave is sweeping across the country.

The Meteorological Department reported that on Saturday, the highest temperature of 37.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in Rajshahi, and 37 degrees Celsius in the capital Dhaka. Temperatures in the Jashore-Khulna region ranged between 37 and 38 degrees Celsius.

Furthermore, the Energy Division stated that initiatives have been taken to import Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO), and coal for power plants to meet the increased demand for electricity. Due to soaring demand, authorities are forced to implement power rationing.

Umme Rehana, Joint Secretary of the Power Division, said, “We are trying to keep Dhaka free from load shedding.”

According to BPDB statistics, the maximum power generation on Friday evening was 14,196 MW. On Saturday evening, the peak demand for electricity was 16,900 MW.

The potential electricity demand for the current summer season is estimated to be between 17,000 and 18,500 MW.
