From the juicy-leaks-department comes a story of Sega and Sony’s secret love affair that is so scandalous that it might shock your pants off! Well, not exactly, but it’s still pretty cool. The accidental publication of a confidential talk between the two parties revealed a lot of things, the most important of which is the fact that downloadable PS2 games are coming to PS3.

Apparently, SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on the PlayStation Network. The company is also considering hosting a special Japanese import section that will offer up rare games from the region that the West is yet to experience. There is also talk of Dreamcast games coming to PSN, with Sega noting that it might be “exclusive” to PSN, though they didn’t rule out the possibility of appearing on Xbox Live.

Moving on, the document also reveals that Sony’s motion controller may be released during spring 2010, with a March launch in Japan; no pricing was given. Sega has expressed its interest in the controller, noting that it will offer titles for the platform.

The two companies also discussed the possibility of games heading to PlayStation Home, including the AvP and Iron Man franchises. There is also a Thor game-movie tie-in in the works that Sony wants to take a look at.

The two lovebirds talk more interesting stuff that you’d surely love to eavesdrop on. Hit the jump link and have fun!

SCEA Meeting Aug 5th Notes
Aug 6 2009 – DRAFT FOR COMMENTS

Objectives of Meeting

Dyer agreed to regular quarterly meetings with SOA

Sony PS3

SCEA reiterated plans to sell 13 million PS3s this year

Big announcement back half of year they can’t talk about (potentially price cut of PS3 to reach hardware goals)

SCEA commented on indexing between PS3 and 360 SKUs, should be around 2:1 to garner most favorable treatment.

Motion Controller

Spring 2010 launch (March in JP)

No bundle/pricing details yet, should come Sept 1

Plan on selling 4-5MM units WW

SCEA agreed to provide a list of Sega IP that would work well with the motion controller, Virtua Tennis was an example

Motion Controller support allows easy way to differentiate PS3 SKU

Other differentiation opportunities include PSP/PS3 interoperability – think of features that would make users want to buy both PS3 and PSP SKUs.

Alpha Protocol

Michael Foster, product evaluator, said AP felt barely RPG. Initial level too challenging for players. "Mass Effect felt more RPG."

Review notes sent to John Merlino a few weeks prior. After meeting Gerald mentioned AP is a high priority for his team.

Planet 51

Sell in of PS3 SKU – SCEA noted that other movie titles on PS3 had underperformed as well (inc. Transformers) this cycle.

Dyer suggests contacting Susan at Walmart and asking what she wants in the pack to sell this SKU (movie tix etc)

Other possibilities are Hybrid movie disc (BD 25 or 50 with Game and Movie on same disc).

Bayonetta

Collectors edition with Bayonetta Action Figure

Novo recommended launching PSN demo around Xmas based off a Jan 5th Ship date with 2-3 week run out to launch.

3-4 weeks is usually ideal demo timing with fresh content every week leading up to launch (trailers, insider video about PG heritage, video blogs).

Vancouver 2010

HOME, Olympic destination would garner a lot of positive attention from SCEA

Should be doing same with Bayonetta, Marvel etc. Easy to launch in all territories.

HOME merchandizing opportunities (clothes etc).

Sonic Racing

Open to DLC to differentiate PS3 SKU – not ratchet and clank but other characters

maybe characters from Rare or Fable universes

Yakuza

Could put Japanese games directly on PSN for download in a special Japanese Import section (pricing $9.99 to $39.99 for full game).

Might need to localize menus at least with subtitles.

SCEA interested in helping on MKTG side if they can have period of exclusivity.

AVP

Another great HOME candidate

AVP avatars

Hybrid BD disc with movie

Iron Man 2

Great candidate for HOME space – explore Tony Stark’s lab etc.

Should have one for Marvel in general.

PSU2

Could do bundle at GameStop with PSP 30-35K units on UMD, Go, or both.

Valkyria 1937

Could bundle with PSP as well.

Vanquish and Aliens: CM

Opportunity for PS3/PSP interoperability (see Eidos Batman, Army of Two, Assassin’s Creed for good examples).

If we offer that SCEA would be really interested in having us at their booth next E3.

Thor

SCEA would like a look at the code soon.

Sonic Anniversary

Could put out collectors edition with all old sonic games on one BD disc.

"Best of Sonic" for around $99.

SCEA would love PSN exclusive power ups/different game modes (like Castlevania’s flip it over/backwards)

PS2 emulator for PS3 (confidential)

SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc)

For co Marketing money show PS3 controller on TV ads – similar to EA Madden Spots, NCAA, etc…

London Olympics

Perfect opportunity for Motion Controller integration.

DC Digital Titles

If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively.

If we give them a long period of exclusivity they’ll give us more marketing support.

PSP Titles

For SKU differentiation it’s best to offer features that are slightly different from PS3 version.

Titles that are coming up on PSP are Assassin’s Creed II, GTA China Wars, Resident Evil, Little Big Planet – all massive franchises.

SCEA has a specific PSP deck which they can send up with their hardware director for a chat.

Then we’ve got just what you need: a brand new trailer that explores and explains the fantasy landscape of the action adventure game. Art director Lee Petty also shows off some new concept art, factions and moody weather effects.

The game will be chopping up posers on PS3 and Xbox 360 on Rocktober 13. For the non-awesome inclined, that is October 13. A brutal demo will be released to Xbox Live subscribers this Thursday; cheapskates and PS3 gamers will get the demo on October 1. Those who brutally handed out money to preorder the game are now enjoying their time in the land of heavy metal.

Developed by Blue Byte, the game will contain the usual fine-tuning of settlements to optimize transport and production as well as three paths to victory – military, science and trade – and a new victory points system.

Going the Dead Space route, EA today announced that they have partnered with Starz Media’s Film Roman to start production on an animated movie based on the upcoming Dante’s Inferno videogame. The film will expand on the story in the game which is due out next year on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Following the story set by the legendary epic poem, the film will explore hell through Dante’s eyes as he searches for his true love, Beatrice. The film will combine some of the best talent in the animation industry – Film Roman’s Joe Goyette (Dead Space: Downfall) is the producer on the project, Victor Crook (The Spectacular Spider-man, Hellboy Animated: Blood & Iron) is directing and Brandon Auman (Iron Man: Armored Adventures) is writing.

“This is like nothing else out in the marketplace right now – a visually stunning project based on one of the most powerful stories ever told,” notes Jay Fukuto, Head of Studio for Film Roman. “It could only happen with a partner with the vision and creativity of EA. They were great collaborators on ‘Dead Space: Downfall,’ and we expect another very rewarding experience with this new feature.”

The animated film will most probably be released alongside the game.

WiiWare

Bonsai Barber (Nintendo, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone-Comic Mischief, 1,000 Wii Points): The village residents are hungry for the latest in foliage fashion, and it’s up to you, the new barber, to fix them up. Use the tools of your trade: scissors, clippers, spray can, and more in this humorous, first-of-its-kind "first-person-groomer" game. Bonsai Barber features a colorful cast of 12 intriguing customers, including a temperamental shallot starlet (don’t call her an onion), an oddball strawberry boffin, a cactus cowboy, a daredevil carrot, and a suave banana with top-secret clearance. Each day, five customers arrive to test your stylistic skill. If the customer requests a specific style, you’ll plow that furrow, or you can rely on your expertise to pick from more than 30 popular fashions. Or, why not turn over a new leaf? Be creative and see how they react. They’re a demanding bunch, so if you miss an appointment, you’ll hear about it-on your Wii Message Board. If you do a good job, you may receive a gift or even a postcard from an exotic destination as your happy customers travel to distant lands and show off their exquisite coifs.

Virtual Console

Super Punch-Out!! (Super NES™, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Featuring the tight game play and humor the series is known for, this sequel to the NES™ classic sees Little Mac return to the ring with the World Video Boxing Association belt once again at stake. Slug your way through the grueling, sweat-pounding matches of the Minor, Major and World Circuits as you face off against some of Little Mac’s greatest rivals, such as Bear Hugger, Bald Bull and Super Macho Man. With a cast of new challengers waiting, do you have what it takes to identify their unique patterns and exploit their weaknesses? Go to your corner and come out fighting, but remember what Doc Louis would say: "It’s not about brawling-it’s about finesse!"

X Games team-mate of the late Colin McRae, Block is at the forefront of a new breed of pro drivers, competing as Subaru Rally Team USA Driver #43 in the Rally America National Championship and the world-famous X Games.

Not just any force of guinea pigs is headed our way, as Disney Interactive Studios today announced that they have enlisted an elite force of guinea pigs to star in the upcoming G-Force video game, inspired by the forthcoming Walt Disney film.

Scheduled for release this July on PC, PS2, PSP, PS3, Xbox 360, DS and Wii, the action-platform game has guinea pigs use high-tech gadgets and specialized talents to complete dangerous missions. Here’s the scoop:

Players control Darwin, the G-Force team leader, and housefly surveillance commando Mooch. Darwin and Mooch team up with the rest of G-Force to use their unique high-tech gadgets, stealth mastery, and pint-sized teamwork to save the world from a robot army of evil household appliances. G-Force features innovative gameplay with a unique sense of scale and puzzle solving that requires players to manipulate environments or enemies, including evil household appliances like waffle irons, water coolers and vacuum cleaners to complete their mission.

It is being developed by Eurocom, while the DS and PSP versions are being handled by Keen Games.
