ViSalus Sciences is a weight loss & nutrition products company, operating with the direct sales or network marketing business model, and is a company with increasingly impressive momentum. I will explain why that is so important, and also what challenges I believe will arise with ViSalus Sciences in the future.

The name of the company, ViSalus, comes from two Latin words; “Vi”, meaning Life, and “Salus”, which means prosperity and health.

Many people will tell you it doesn’t matter who sponsors you into a network marketing opportunity…it’s partially true, but in the end, it really DOES matter who your sponsor is. A tale-tale sign of a company in momentum, with incredible growth, is when they are a “high-trending” company…that is, their names comes up in many conversations, posts, tweets, etc, across the web and social media…they’re being highly “talked about” It’s something many companies miss and fail to realize.

First, I want to be clear on this point. When I first became familiar with ViSalus Sciences, I was NOT a distributor (“promoter”) for them. I started in network marketing with Pre-Paid Legl, a company that offers legal services…far different category than health & wellness, and I thought I would never have anything to do with the health & wellness industry.  But, based on observing the incredible momentum the company had, and researching the company, products, compensation, and culture, I decided to join.

That’s  not a decision I took lightly.

I would be willing to bet the #1 thing people underestimate when joining any network marketing opportunity is what stage of the “growth curve” that company is in at that time. Every successful company that’s been around for a while went through 4 main phases:

Review of the Products ViSalus Sciences Offers

The products ViSalus Sciences offer really work. Some of the results people have experienced and shared with others are truly remarkable. ViSalus offers multiple types of products, including meal replacement shake mixes, natural healthy energy drink mixes, vitamins (chelated, big difference from typical cheaper vitamins), minerals, and essential oils, performance products, and even meal replacement cookies. But the major sellers are the 5 product packs:

• Balance Kit
• Shape Kit
• Core Kit
• Transformation Kit
• Fit Kit 

All of the performance products are designed to boost energy and metabolism. The ViSalus Neuro is a powder packet, in either Lemon or Raspberry flavors, that gives energy and fights away drowsiness.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, the weight loss kits replace 1 or 2 meals per day. So your grocery expenses each month will actually go down, and you could save more per month on groceries than what you’re spending for your ViSalus kits. My wife and I drink a shake for breakfast and a shake for lunch, and the only cost besides the shake mix is for almond milk, fruit and peanut butter that we like to mix in with the shakes. And then when we make something for dinner, the leftovers last us several days because we aren’t eating the leftovers for lunch the next day.

And again, the product is selling and growing so fast because of the 3 for Free incentive. It’s not that hard to tell people about these products, and then when you post a picture of a shake you just had, or pictures of weight loss/fitness results, people almost start begging for information on how they can try it too.

ViSalus Sciences Compensation Plan

The ViSalus compensation plan is designed to be one of the most “balanced” compensation plans in the network marketing industry. What I mean by that is the money from sales are divided fairly evenly across the spectrum, 1/3 to the newer promoters, 1/3 to the middle “driving force” team builders, and 1/3 to the top team leaders.

This is key because there are many plans out there that pay out great for those making the sales, but not enough higher up to develop great leadership and teamwork and build massive teams…many “party plan” companies fall into this category. Likewise, there have been several big companies, mainly using binary comp plans, that have created viral massive growth off of the mega-success stories of the people at the top. Companies in this category, such as Numis, Monavie, and Organo Gold, experience explosive growth based off those stories of people at the top earning millions per month, but those massive teams inevitably implode on themselves as the people at the bottom realize none of them are making any money and leave in mass to companies like ViSalus!

So, ViSalus rewards each level the right amount to drive sales, team growth, teamwork, and leadership development. And, at the same time, they created the monthly car bonus paid out EARLY in the compensation plan (instead of to the top leaders who can already afford to buy their own car with cash) that companies across the industry are trying to copy left and right.

By simply reaching the Regional Director level, which requires a sales volume from your team of only $12,500, you are qualified for the monthly bonus that month of $600 if you own, lease, or purchase a BMW, or $300 if you choose to take the cash option. Even if you already own a 2007 or newer BMW you still get the $600 per month, every month, as long as you continue to qualify. And $12,500 is a number that anybody with some drive and hustle can hit within 30 days.

What’s awesome is that not just your personal volume counts toward that number, but also your products you buy personally, rollover volume from the previous month, and the volume from people placed under you. This promotion, and the incentive to help new people on the team to qualify for the BMW bonus has created some serious momentum and synergy, qualifying people for BMW’s like crazy!

This car bonus is so very effective because of the enticing story it creates. When a person who has only been promoting the Challenge for 30-60 days is able to drive around in a hot new BMW and tell everyone it was because of ViSalus, it really helps grow the person’s business. There are other companies copying this promotion now as well, Nerium has a Lexus bonus, Talk Fusion has a Mercedes Benz promotion. When other companies start copying you, you know you’re the leader of the pack.

Another thing ViSalus did that led the industry and others are copying now, is making sales volume points simple and easy to understand, with a 1-to-1 match. You sell $500 in product, you get 500 volume points. No more of the confusing point system where you sign sell $250 of product and get 80 points, which is just a way for companies to cheat you out of money by forcing an uneven dollar for dollar ratio.

I like this point, and it just helped assure me the company, including CMO Blake Mallen, CEO Ryan Blair, and Nick Sarnicola, were honest people not out trying to cheat people out of what they earn.

The ViSalus Holding Tank

This is the knockout punch to all the competition in the network marketing industry. The holding tank is a feature of the compensation plan that allows you to  hold your personal recruits in a “waiting room” for 60 days before deciding where to strategically place them in your team. With this, you can let time tell you who will are producers and who are just squatters, allowing you to place people on teams where they are deserved and where you need to in order to help your team members reach bonuses and rank promotions.

If you’ve been around the industry for long, you’ve likely been pitched a deal that had massive “spillover”, like a binary plan company will claim. But ViSalus Sciences holding tank, or waiting room, gives you TRUE spillover, not just POTENTIAL spillover. In the binary plan, you only get paid on your weak leg. My friend Lawrence Tam recruited over 60 people personally into Numis, and only had a couple hundred dollars per month to show for that…because of only getting paid on the smaller leg. Now, with the same number of recruits, he’s earning in excess of $10k per month.

The holding tank helps the little guy, the inexperienced marketer, earn more money. But it also serves as a very useful recruiting tool to attract heavy hitter, experienced network marketers. If you are a strong recruiter like some of us on our rapidly growing team, you will always have a holding tank full of people. You can then approach a leader in another opportunity, keeping their options open, and tell them if they can produce $20,000 in volume, you’ll place the other $20,000 under them to promote them up to National Director, or something along those lines.

I don’t believe ViSalus will ever become one of the big, outdated companies in the industry, because they’ve shown how innovative and cutting edge they want to be. Their ability to design bonuses, contests, and the compensation plan to maximize team work, sales, recruiting, and rank advancement proves they want to make many more people more successful than they’ve ever been.

I recently started off a series of posts on advanced email marketing techniques.  We started with a lesson on using the Parser feature, and a few days ago discussed segmenting our lists. And today I’ll cover geo-targeting your list.

There are several powerful features in AWeber as far as marketing is concerned, but depending on your niche, Geo-Targeting could be one of the most important.

Many affiliate offers are restricted geographically to certain countries or regions. It would be huge waste of resources and bad form to email offers to readers that can’t use them because they don’t live in the country where the offer is available. By geo-targeting your list, you can make certain only readers in the countries or regions where the offer is available receive the email. Readers outside the geo-targeted area won’t receive the mailing. This increases conversions and reduces unsubscribes.

Another situation where list geo-targeting proves useful for holiday emails. During Thanksgiving, everyone receives a bunch of “Happy Thanksgiving!” emails. However, I’ve heard from many Canadians on my list, and they’ve shared with me their frustration…because, in Canada, Thanksgiving happens in October, not November. By geo-targeting your email, you can ensure that your holiday emails goes out to the right group at the right time. Here’s how to do it.

Here is yet another example of a situation geo-targeting would suit perfectly.  If you’re in network marketing and you’re trying to promote an event in a certain area, and you’d like to invite your list members who live in the area to the big event, you can easily do so with this feature.

Segment Your List By Country:

Log-in to your AWeber account and choose “Search” from the “Subscribers” tab.  On the page that loads, you will see a list of options to choose from in a drop down menu. The one we’re going for today is “Country (from IP)”. And, if you really want to dig deeper, you can segment by region, city, postal code, latitude, longitude, etc. For our lesson today, we will just create a list of U.S. subscribers.

Depending on the size of your email list, the search can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes to generate results. Give the new segmented list a name and save it. Now you can email a broadcast to your list and target it to any region, city, country, or zip you want!

Google officially rolled out it’s “Google +1″ button recently, and I think, as with any new change to the internet, we’ll see some interesting changes in search patterns, results, and traffic to our sites in the near future…depending on who makes the best use of this new tool.

It works much the same was a “tweet” or Facebook “like” sharing button works, adding back link power to a article or website, and also potential social traffic.  Additionally, these will also be affecting Google’s search results; higher placement given to “more popular” sites with more +1′s.

For some time, I’ve been using Sharebar to facilitate sharing of my website posts.  Sharebar is a plugin that places a vertical floating bar along the left side of your page, and can be easily modified to show a number of different sharing icons within it.  I have had mine set to have Twitter, Facebook, and Digg icons.  However, I never saw much action with the Digg button on my pages, so I’m choosing to remove it and replace it with the Google +1 button.

So, if you’re using Sharebar also, you’ll want to incorporate the new Google +1 button into it as well.  You’ll have to do a little work, but it’s not all too difficult.  Here is how to do it:

1. Log in to your site’s WordPress admin panel and click “Sharebar” under the Settings menu on the left hand side.

2. You should see an existing list of buttons to choose from. The grey lines are inactive, and the white lines are enabled buttons that show up in the Sharebar.  But, you’ll see there is no Google +1 button (since it’s brand new), so let’s click “Add New Button”.

3. In another tab or window, go here on Google to get the code snippet needed to build a button: http://www.google.com/webmasters/+1/button/index.html

I chose to use the “Tall” size for the big button, and “Medium” for the small button. Generate the code snippet for each size, copy, paste into notepad.

4.  Go back to the Sharebar settings window, paste in the proper code snippets, and click “Add Button”.

5.  Even if you clicked the “Enable” check box before clicking “Add Button”, you will have to click on “Edit” and re-check the Enable box for the button to show up on your site. Again, note that the grey lines are inactive buttons, and the white lines are the enabled buttons.

6.  The last step is to add the head tag script from Google’s code snippet generator to your header.  In your admin page, on the left sidebar, go down to Appearance and click on “Editor” underneath it.  On the page that loads, scroll down the right sidebar to “Header” and click on it.  Add the script after the meta information and before the css stylesheet information, shown in this image below.

And now you’re done! Good work!

List segmentation is a powerful feature offered by AWeber. Sadly, most marketers don’t take advantage of it.  If you’re sending new email sign-ups through any auto-responder email system, such as AWeber, then I highly recommend you learn how to segment your list and utilize this tool.

What is List Segmentation?

Segmenting is simply dividing your list out into smaller groups according to certain criteria, allowing you to email only certain groups at a time.  Lists can be segmented in many ways, such as geographically (U.S., Canada, etc.) or by date added to list.

When you’re adding new sign-ups to your list, you only want them to go through your funnel (initial email series you have pre-setup).  You don’t want them to get promotional emails sent out to the rest of your more veteran list members, or else risk scaring off new list sign-ups.  They may have just read your welcome email and then later that day get your latest email broadcast about the launch you’re promoting…before any relationship has been established between you and your reader.

With that said, you want to let your new readers go through the funnel you have set up before they ever start receiving your general broadcasts that may be promotional in nature, and here is how to segment your list:

Search For The Subscribers You Want To Segment

First, log in to your Aweber account, choose “Search” from the “Subscribers” tab.  From the page that loads, you’ll be able to search your list using a number of different parameters.  For the sake of this training, we’ll stick with the example of segmenting by date added. So choose “Date Added” from the drop down menu.

Let’s assume, for this example, your auto responder funnel (first series of emails) lasts for one month, so you don’t want readers added to the list within the last 30 days to receive other emails.  What you will do is use the segmenting feature in AWeber to search for all subscribers on the list who joined the list one month, or longer, ago…basically everybody who has been through your initial email funnel.

Depending on the size of your list, the search can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes to generate results.

Once the list has loaded, assign it a name and save it.

Email The Segment Instead of The Full List:

After you have created a segmented list containing only your subscribers who have been through your email funnel, you can email only the segmented list instead of your full list. In Aweber, choose “Broadcast” from the “Messages” tab and create a new broadcast message. Write your email just as you normally would.  Directly below the Schedule option, you’ll also see a drop down menu titled “Send to Segment”.

Clicking the menu will show the segments available. Select the segment you created and save the message. Now you’re ready to send out your email broadcast to all the 30+ day old subscribers while your auto-responder funnel continues to build that relationship with your new subscribers.
