Ok, not exactly new. We premiered “IMUR”, a track off of Spirit Mirrir, the upcoming full-length by Miami-born, Brooklyn-based songwriter Sam Friend, way back in September. But the video is new, as is the spelling of the album title, which used to have an “o” in it. Billed as “an honest meditation on the creative process behind ‘IMUR’”, the video was filmed at Flux Studios in NYC and features Friend on vocals and guitar, Brian Tate on bass, Arturo Garcia on drums, Derek Fairholm on piano, and producer Ben Lindell’s dog Juno on the floor. For more where that came from, visit samfriend.com.

Two years after the band’s last appearance in Miami, Wilco returned for an electrifying, 27-song, two-hour marathon at the Fillmore Miami Beach.

Openers Purling Hiss from Philadelphia set the stage for a high-energy night with their own brand of guitar-driven ’90s alt-rock. They began with one of their more subdued tracks, “Voices”, a lazy summer-day rocker from their six-song EP Lounge Lizards. Yet, by the end of a seven-song set, the trio was in full-on jam mode with the screeching guitar solos from “Run from the City” earning a modest roar from the crowd.

Then Wilco came on, and the roar reached a new level.

The start of their set is best described as just plain pretty. The band started with “One Sunday Morning”, a twelve-minute track from their 2011 album, The Whole Love, as a projector shone golden light on vines made of white cloth that hung from the ceiling. Drops of white light fell down from the vines onto the band while they bounced soft, clear notes across the stage, leaving the audience utterly still and silent.

In an instant the atmosphere would change as they progressed into a new song, each with its own mood, light display, and color scheme. For the dark electronic soundscape of “The Art of Almost”, the stage burned with deep purples, reds, and greens as blinding floodlights in the back flashed with each pulsing guitar stroke or drum beat. White branches of light were replaced by pools of red for “A Shot in the Arm” as frontman Jeff Tweedy sang “something in my veins, bloodier than blood.” And a light purple glow took over the stage for the mellow “Jesus, Etc.”

Wilco racked up their inventory from their 18-year tenure for an all-ages crowd that bobbed and sang along to almost every song. Tweedy’s exchanges with the crowd were light-hearted and well-received, and he even joked he wet his pants being in Miami … because of the humidity of course. The band came back for two encores to a pleading crowd, with Tweedy saying they only come back when the crowd is at its lowest ebb, drawing even more cheers and applause.

With each encore the band became more and more frenzied. The slow and subtle distortion behind “Via Chicago” was replaced by jarring heavy metal riffs and chaotic bangs from guitarist Nels Cline and drummer Glenn Kotche as Tweedy kept singing and playing the song’s mellow tune in the background. During another frantic, distorted swell after “Theologians”, Cline stood up on his drum set, silhouetted against a white spotlight. According to Tweedy: “Glenn stood on his drums tonight because a young woman asked him to because she claims it is the most beautiful thing she’s seen. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.”

Then there was the shirtless, jean-clad, cowbell playing sensation dancing around the stage during “Hoodoo Voodo” to round out a perfect finish.

Wednesday night’s RAW Miami premier at The Stage was an eclectic showcase of local, emerging talent that featured seven visual artists, three bands, two live body painters, a fashion show starring six fashion bloggers, and one outrageous rock n’ roll painting experience.

Forged out of one young L.A.-based artist’s desire for platform and community, RAW seeks to empower talented, overlooked artists and bring them together in a raucous celebration of their creativity.

At RAW events, participating artists get their own personal interview with a videographer, a headshot, and photos of their work or performance. It’s a show and a PR package all in one; all the artists have to do is sell their fair share of tickets to the event. Since its inception three years ago, RAW has spread to more than 32 cities nationwide, and is set to launch in Australia this summer. (China and Europe will follow next year.)

I arrived at the venue hours before the doors were set to open. Undeterred by the afternoon’s torrential downpour, the artists began preparing, hair-curling, and body painting. The energy was palpable and frenzied as 8 o’clock grew nearer; fashion designer Tatiana Torres of Furor Moda explained her looks to the models, while hair artist Rosie Perez curled and pinned, and Nikki Peglow painted each model’s face with vibrant eyebrows and surrealist side-mouths.

The body painters set to painting, and the artists, many of whom had the good sense to hang their work ahead of time, waited patiently to be interviewed, planning answers to questions of inspiration and “Where do you see yourself in five years?”

The doors opened to a line that stretched down the block, and didn’t dissipate for hours. More than 400 people streamed in, all buttoned up and cocktail-dress clad, vibing to beats by DJ Jave.

Artist BXB shouted emphatically to onlookers, shining a black light on his pop-art inspired glow-in-the-dark pieces, which he tirelessly crafted with thousands of tiny beads.

Nearby, Cristina de Guillot also met with interested viewers, selling a few of her vintage renaissance collage works.

MC Grace Munoz took to the stage, and after a roll call and a few announcements, the night’s festivities began. Songwriter Diego Castro, aka The Dude Sessions, crooned to the crowd over bluesy guitar, followed by an unexpected live painting performance by Floyd the Rock Artist and The Evolution.

Driven by the band’s loud rock and energetic riffs, Floyd became a man possessed, and a paint-splattered mess.

The final band, The Deadly Blank, brought the energy back down to a steady alt-rock vibe.

As the models readied themselves for the runway, Grace brought the body paintees to the stage to show off their artists’ handiwork. Pam Trent created a samurai warrior, complete with bloody gashes and blue katana.

“We are all gods,” said Stay Sea Love, who modeled her subject as “the embodiment of Krishna”.

For the finale, the models took to the stage, commanding the runway in their six-inch heels and boho chic designs. The cast of nine included six guest models, all local fashion bloggers. And contrary to the stoicism that seems to pervade the fashion industry, these runway models were smiling coyly and obviously having fun.

Bright lights and gauzy smoke made for a dreamy Tuesday night at the Fillmore, with Baltimore’s atmospheric Beach House playing to a mostly packed house.

The show began with Zomes, the one-man band of Asa Osborne, formerly of Baltimore’s Lungfish. The experimental keyboardist sat front and center for a psychadelic, if somewhat monotonous, set of repetitive synth and drum beats. The crowd was still filing in at this point and those that were there waited patiently for the main act, giving the opener a courteous applause when his performance was over.

Shortly before ten, Beach House took the stage to a chorus of cheers and applause. The synth-pop duo of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally, joined by live percussion, started off with the quiet “Troublemaker” off of their new album, Bloom, to be released next week. “Other People,” also from the new album, followed with more of Legrand’s sweet, crooning high notes. But it wasn’t until the third song that the band really hit their stride. A sea of star-like lights engulfed the backdrop as “Norway,” the hit from 2010’s Teen Dream, energized the crowd. Smoke and venetian blind lighting streaked across the silhouetted performers, while shades of blue reflected off fans encased in giant wooden boxes at the back of the stage.

While the band remained stationary during most of the show, Scally took the occasional stroll across the stage and Legrand banged her thick mane into the microphone. They played mostly new tracks like “Wild” and the somber and nostalgic single “Myth,” plus a B-side called “Equal Mind” from the 7” Record Store Day release “Lazuli.”

Although they rarely addressed the audience, Legrand gave a brief nod to the new release, but said, “that’s boring to talk about.” Old favorites from Teen Dream and 2008’s Devotion, like “Zebra” and “Silver Soul,” got the most reaction, especially as the most frantic and seizure-inducing light display accompanied the latter.

The band came back after a short break for an encore with a couple more old songs as the crowd shimmied and swayed for the final notes. They ended the set with “Irene,” from Bloom, which slowly built up from languid and aimless to booming and intricate for a beautiful finish.

The food truck roundup that usually accompanies Art Walk may be cancelled once again this month, but several Wynwood galleries are still serving up promising new exhibitions. Here’s what’s on our radar.

Live…Suburbia! @ Workshop Collective

The show’s own description does a pretty good job: “Live…Suburbia! is a collection of stories and images of the post-1960s subcultures that define America. It’s kids taking their urethane wheels to empty pools; picking British Punk in broad downstrokes and creating Hardcore. Live…Suburbia! is dedicated to denim devils twirling butterfly knives and hasty tags thrown down with Rust-Oleum touch-up paint stolen from your parent’s garage.”

The exhibition will feature live street performances by Vice City Rockers, Talking Dogs, The Cost, and DJ Benton in front of the Workshop Collective, a pop-up space at 171 N.W. 23rd Street. For full details, visit the Facebook event page.

Fictional Eyes: The Dreams of Reason @ The Lunch Box Gallery

A collaboration with the Spanish webzine Area Zinc, this exhibition is designed to “convey the idea of photography as an exercise for the imagination,” as opposed to a merely representational discipline. From the press release: “All the pieces in this show reveal fictional situations, scenarios, objects, and even narratives that defy not only the way we see … but as well challenge the limits of photography as an art form.” For more information on the exhibition, visit The Lunch Box Gallery website.

9 @ Robert Fontaine Gallery

The first group show in RFG’s new, bigger space (2349 N.W. Second Avenue), 9 spotlights the work of precisely nine gallery-represented artists. “Coincidentally,” Fontaine tells us in the exhibition description, “the number 9 is symbolic for ‘harmony’, it represents the inspiration and the perfection of an idea.” What idea? Fontaine doesn’t say. To try to figure it out for yourself, visit RFG’s website.

Hobnobbing At The Garden of Earthly Delights @ Black Square Gallery

Colombian artist Anibal Vallejo’s solo show features multimedia works inspired by 15th-century Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch’s “The Garden Of Earthly Delights”, a dizzying panoply of orgiastic humans, mutant birds, and inexplicable orbs. “Using [Bosch's] own allegories and metaphors,” BSG explains, “Vallejo sarcastically expresses his view of modern society where celebrities, politics, icons of mass-media bombshells proudly play there [sic] roles in our daily ‘theater of the absurd’.” To learn more about the exhibition, visit the BSG website.

Poison Bliss @ 101 exhibit

A hold-over from April’s Art Walk that we neglected in last month’s guide, Poison Bliss showcases the skewed vision of San Francisco-based artist Ted Vasin, whose large-scale paintings’ explosive colors, disorienting perspectives, and exquisite lines can make you happy to be looking up a man’s nose at close range. To learn more about the exhibition, visit 101 exhibit’s website.

Façade @ Dorsch Gallery

A solo show featuring sculptures and wall reliefs by Felecia Chizuko Carlisle, Façade is the Florida native’s response to the high-rises that dominate Miami’s skyline and skyscrapers in general. From the exhibition press release: “Skyscrapers are an invasive architecture. They are built with little regard for indigenous styles or local histories. Clusters of modernist skyscrapers, incredibly tall, glass and steel buildings … Twentieth century expressions of alienation often occur with the cold edifices as symbols of impenetrability. If living or working inside one of these buildings, their superficiality can fade, into individual experiences of partitioned space.” In addition to Façade, Dorsch is opening two other solo shows — Elisabeth Condon’s Walk with Me (paintings, works on paper) and Michelle Weinberg’s The Pretend Dimension (works on paper) — in time for Art Walk. To learn more about all three exhibitions, visit the the Dorsch Gallery website.

Everything Is Going To Be Fine @ Cafeina

Featuring the works of artists Andrew Nigon and Carmen Tiffany, both currently in residence at Miami’s Fountainhead Studios, Everything Is Going To Be Fine “delves into the fragmented material world of discarded possessions, sentimental fabrics, and industrial textiles” through found objects. Nigon’s sculptures explore our “insatiable drive to improve while simultaneously living within bodies that are in constant decay.” Through installation, painting, and video works, Tiffany “deals with the fantastical artifice and promise of children’s media and contaminates it with life’s, often visceral, realities.” To learn more about the exhibition, visit the FB event page.

Bat Mobile @ O Cinema

As part of a weekend dedicated to comic books, O Cinema somehow arranged to have the actual Bat Mobile from Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman (the best film in the modern series) parked in front of the theater all day Saturday. Which might be the coolest arrangement ever made. To learn more about O’s Comic Book Movie Weekend, visit the FB event page.

Heads up. Several galleries, including Diet, Dina Mitrani, David Castillo, and Diane Lowenstein, are sticking with their current exhibitions, which we previewed in the April Art Walk Guide.
