I just realized that I've never been to the ballet. I've been to musicals, plays, operas, the symphony. Just about everything you could think of. But I've never been to the ballet. I was just reminded of that when I got this email about the new partnership that the Boston Ballet and Zipcar launched recently to provide Zipsters with discount tickets.

The internationally renowned Boston Ballet and Zipcar, Inc., the world’s largest car-sharing service, have partnered to bring a bit of The Nutcracker to the streets of Boston in November. On November 16, a tutu-clad Zipcar will be making its debut at Boston Ballet’s South End studios to be greeted by Boston Ballet dancer Sylvia Deaton, also in a tutu.

The Zipcar, named MINI Meschke, will be patrolling the streets for two weeks in November accompanied by Zipcar’s Boston Street Team to inform Bostonians of the partnership between the two organizations which offers Zipcar members a discount on tickets to the ballet.

Let's hope it doesn't snow over these next couple of weeks. No one wants to see that tutu get ruined.

Click (here) to see some of the other discounts Zipcar members get.

Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?
Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com

Like really, really good shape? Stuff Magazine is now taking submissions for their annual Bodies by Boston contest.

We love bodies. All kinds — hard or soft, tall or short. (And a little ink only makes them more fun.) We like to dress them up in the latest fashions and strip them down for a photo shoot. Do you love your body? We hope you do. If so, let us see it! We’re currently accepting submissions for our 2010 Bodies by Boston Issue. Send us a current photo and tell us a little bit about yourself. Are you a dancer? A rock climber? Has your body been through a major transformation? Do you spend most of your free time at the gym? Are you a burlesque dancer with fierce curves? Whatever story your body tells, we want to hear it.

Well, not a bad way to lower my self esteem a little bit on a Friday morning. I know it should be 'inspirational' for me to see pics like that to hopefully motivate me to work out more and lose the rest of this weight. But really it just makes me want to weep a little.

Click (here) to enter the contest.

Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?
Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com

Which reminds me, I need to go there sometime soon. The Butcher Shop is also awesome, along with No 9 Park. The only place that I wasn't a huge fan of was Sportello.

Next up on the docket, her first cook book. Here's what Tasting Table has to say:

Now, she's bringing her singular culinary ethos to the home kitchen with her first cookbook, Stir.

The book outlines her trajectory from a scrappy South Boston upbringing to her time in the kitchen at Todd English's Olives to the opening of No. 9 Park. It's a fascinating tale, but her recipes provide an even more compelling narrative.

Sounds good to me. You know, I made pasta from scratch ones. It turned out pretty decent, but boy was it a lot of work. I've got all of Thomas Keller's cookbooks. Those are pretty impossible to cook out of. Maybe I'll give this one a shot.

Click (here) for details.

Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?
Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com

His proposal is one of two that are competing for the space. Sounds exciting to me.

New York City’s beloved Shake Shack is angling for a spot in the heart of the Hub as the owner of the bustling Madison Square Park burger spot is one of two restaurateurs pitching the city on a much-needed new eatery on Boston Common.

That puts the Madison Square Park landmark in head-to-head competition with Boston-bartender-turned-Gotham-restaurant-mogul Jeffrey Mills, whose rival bid envisions an eatery called The Common House featuring “all the cheap eats synonymous with New England.”

I've never actually eaten at Shake Shack. Every time I happen to be close by, the line is ridiculous. So, I always end up leaving. I am however planning a trip down to NYC in early December. I'm thinking it may be time to bite the bullet, stand in line and give it a try. Especially since there's a chance it might be coming to Boston.

Click (here) to read the article.

PS. Shake Shack is welcome in our beloved city. The rats though that are always in that area can stay in NYC. Here's what he had to say:

Wheelock Family Theatre has produced here a greatly approachable introduction to Charles Dickens's most famous novel, A Tale of Two Cities. Dwayne Hartford's updated language makes the narrative accessible to the modern audience, even to those who may not be familiar with the novel itself. In order to keep the script at a reasonable length, Mr. Hartford has also trimmed the tale to its essentials--it is tightly focused on the major plotline of the novel and the 10 or so characters around which it revolves.

Particularly notable performances come from Bill Moortos as Sydney Carton (who also acts as the narrator) and Jane Staab as Madame Defarge. Mr. Moortos aptly represents Carton's initially dogged cynicism, as well as its gradual softening towards his eventual redemption. Ms. Staab's portrayal of Madame Defarge's lust for vengeance, on the other hand, heightens intensely as the plot reaches its climax. The costumes are rich and convincing, and the set, austere by design and with only a few changing elements, is cleverly used to represent everything from the galleries of a London courtroom to the streets of Paris during the storming of the Bastille.

Wheelock Family Theatre, true to their mission of engaging the whole family in the theater experience, has also spent the time to create a helpful study guide providing discussion questions for the audience. At each show, they also offer an event (in our case, a debate on the themes of the narrative) to further encourage audience discussion and participation.

The play is runs through the end of the month so you've got two more weeks to kick it in gear and get over there and see it.

Click (here) for details.

Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?
Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com

I like to read the paper cover to cover. This way it makes it next to impossible to miss anything. Online versions right now are just a series of hyperlinks, so I always feel like I'm missing something.

The Boston Globe is launching a new electronic version of the newspaper for which it will charge $4.98 a week, the company said yesterday.

The product, known as GlobeReader, resembles the look of the print edition while offering electronic features that make it easy to search and scan. It can be downloaded to desktops, laptops, and netbooks, and read offline or online.

GlobeReader features Globe content but is different from the paper’s website, Boston.com, which remains free. Like other news organizations, the Globe continues to evaluate whether to charge for access to some or all of its website.

Now here's the bad news (to the Globe). I stopped subscribing about six months ago for two reasons. The main reason, I find it difficult to pay for something I can get for free. It's the same reason I drink tap water vs. bottled (and yes I know technically tap water isn't free, but it's free-er than bottled). Secondly, it's better for the environment when I read stuff online. And whereas I appreciate the effort with this new Globe Reader, I'm probably going to stick with the free version of the news.

And yes, I am aware that this opens up the whole can of worms about the financial struggles that the Globe and all other paper media is dealing with due to the news being free online. Feel free to let me have it.

Click (here) to read more.

Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?
Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com

Happy Monday, everyone! Heh, it consistently takes all the willpower in my body not to fling my alarm clock out the window on Mondays and then goto work. That being said, I figured I'd give us all a light at the end of the tunnel to focus on this week. Coming up this Saturday is the annual Holiday Tree (are we not allowed to call it a Christmas Tree anymore?) Lighting in Faneuil Hall.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace celebrates the 25th year of the Annual Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony on Saturday, November 21st from 11AM-7:30PM.

At approximately 5:30pm, the Mayor of Boston and a surprise movie star or athlete switch on the Christmas tree lights while illuminating the entire Marketplace with some 300,00 ‘Bee-Lights’. The Tree Lighting is historically recognized as the 1st Lighting of the Holiday Season by the City of Boston.

The Holiday Tree is approximately 85’ high and the Douglas Fir boasts over 15,000 bright white lights; some 3,000 Gold, Red & Green ornaments. The event is free and open to all. Also on that day, Faneuil Hall’s activities will include:

11AM-12:45PM: Street Performers; carolers, musical school groups kick off celebration
1PM: Santa arrives on his legendary sleigh!
4:45PM: JADA - all girl band belting out a mix of pop & R & B
5:30PM: ERNIE & THE AUTOMATICS - original rock band with a "bluesy" edge (they will perform when lights are switched on)

So I'm thinking head over to Faneuil Hall a little before 5:30. Hang out, see the lighting of the tree, and then head over to Giacommo's or The Daily Catch in the North End for some dinner. I sure am a sorry excuse for a gamer nowadays. That whole pesky "work" thing just really puts a damper on things. Even when my beloved Street Fighter franchise came out with their latest rendition, I played it for about 3 weeks and then promptly stopped. I still love video games, I just don't have the time anymore. That being said, you can probably find me on Newbury St next week testing out the new EA Sports Active game just to see what it's all about.

On November 16th EA SPORTS Active will be just around the corner, transforming an empty space for one month into a pop-up training center. Come in and meet with knowledgeable EA SPORTS Active ambassadors, use EA SPORTS Active on the spot or borrow from the lending library and try it out at home. With customizable and personalized workout routines that can be performed from the comfort of home, it’s a simple, fun and cost-effective way to stay healthy during the holidays, making it the perfect gift for you, and anyone on your list.

EA SPORTS will convert an empty storefront at 156 Newbury Street in Boston into a free workout space.

Video games that make you healthy? What will they think of next. First Wii Fit, and now this. Maybe this is the key to that whole childhood obesity problem that our nation is suffering from. It sure beats m
y solution: one year of mandatory military service (boot camp) after high school. My rationale, if you have to run three miles a day for an entire year, you won't be obese.

Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?
Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com

There's no cover and she'll be playing 8 - 12.

She's folky (think Jewel) and is going to have a great mix of her own music and then covers to play through the night. That's why this calorie counting thing that I'm doing now is causing me to die a little bit each day. But on the flip side, like I posted a few weeks ago, I am down 20lbs, so at least it's working.

Coming up this Friday at BOKX109 is their "First Frost" Belvedere Vodka Dinner. And I'm telling you guys about it for a couple of reasons. First, I like vodka. My first choice is Chopin, but Belvedere's pretty good too. Second, the menu includes a lot of things that I hold dear to my heart like: scallops, wagyu beef, and Hudson Valley duck.

WHAT: BOKX 109 American Prime and Hotel Indigo are being iced over by the “First Frost” Belvedere Vodka Dinner on November 13th. BOKX 109 invites you to bundle up and enter their Winter Wonderland where guests will enjoy food stations perfectly created by Executive Chef Evan Percoco, chilled Belvedere vodka concoctions and music by DJ Sensae.

PASSING
Lobster Caviar
corn blini, lemon mascarpone

Wood Grilled Scallop
purple sticky rice, grapefruit star anise

Charred Wagyu Beef
micro arugula black truffle

STATIONS
Hudson Valley Duck Two Ways
cacao crusted duck breast and citrus cured terrine
Belvedere Orange

Lemon and Fennel Cured Scottish Salmon
arborio rice, preserved lemon foam
Belvedere Lemon

4 Hour Sarsaparilla Braised Pork Belly
chestnut johnnycake, black cherry jus
Belvedere IX

DESSERT
Chocolate Bombe stuffed raspberry gelée
Belvedere Black Raspberry

RSVP REQUIRED: For reservations and more information call 617.969.5300.

WHEN: Friday, November 13th, 2009 at 6:30pm
COST: $25.00, excluding tax and gratuity.
WHERE: BOKX 109 American Prime
399 Grove Street Newton, MA 02462 (Located inside Hotel Indigo)

UPDATE: Looks like the press release I was sent had a typo. I have bad news. I just got an email that she has canceled due to a filming conflict.

Due to a filming conflict, Kim Kardashian will be rescheduling her Gypsy Bar appearance. Filling in for Kim at Gypsy’s anniversary bash will be New York City’s DJ Roctakon and Montreal’s DJ Yossi. Doors open at 9pm. Please arrive early, this event will sell out!

Unfortunately, I have not heard of neither DJ Roctakon nor DJ Yossi. Soooooo, looks like I'm going to be doing something else that evening. But for those of you that picked up tix already, it's still their Anniversary party, so I'm sure they'll have something special going on that evening.

I'm glad we were notified in advance, though. Nothing pissed me off more than the time I went to go see the Pussycat Dolls open for the Black Eyed Peas and they didn't announce that PCD had cancelled until we got to the concert. And to add insult to injury, they got Danity Kane to replace them. PCD > Danity Kane.

Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?
Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com

And boy do I have the perfect name. There's a back story too.

So back in August, a big group of friends and I were headed to the Coldplay concert. We took two cars. My car was already at the Tweeter Center when I got a call from the other car. Their car broke down on the highway and they weren't sure they were gonna make it. Major bummer. Miraculously, 1/3 of the way into Coldplay's first song, my friends made it. How you ask? One person used his iphone to rent a zipcar at the nearest location they could find while another person called a cab to pick them up and take them there.

Name this Zipcar. Post your ideas for "M" names today and Wednesday. On Thursday, we'll pick ten of the best ones to grace ten of our Mazda 3's. Are those creative juices flowing yet? Okay, go for it.

Oh, so the name I'm thinking of? Monterey Jack (or Monty) after that dude from the Rescue Rangers. Because that zipcar definitely saved the day. Would have been even better if it didn't have to be an "M" name, then I'd suggest Zipper (the blue fly from Rescue Rangers). Anyway, if you'd like to make a suggestion of your own. Find Zipcar on Facebook and suggest away.

Click (here) to goto their FB fanpage.

Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?
Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com

A Bloggery reader and fellow blogger sent it to me regarding a new item at Boston Speeds Hot Dog Wagon: Grilled Pastrami.

We were having lunch at the Boston Speed Dog truck last week, when Chef Greg Gale tempted our already full bellies with his newest offering-- Grilled Pastrami. He's been trying to find the right alternative for that one person in a group who really doesn't want a hot dog.We think he found it. "Speed's Grilled Pastrami" is to pastrami sandwiches what a Speed Dog is to an ordinary hot dog.

Imagine excellent pastrami, placed on the flaming wood grill and tossed to let the flames melt some of the fat and crisp the edges into bacon-like goodness. Alongside, a roll spends a few moments on the fire toasting lightly. Then, if you're smart enough to follow Greg's guidance, a streak of his special mustard blend and a spoonful of fresh-made barbeque sauce is added to the bun. Finally, when the chef is happy with the melting, crisping and warming, the pastrami is piled on top.

As you'll recall, I made my first trip down to Speed's this past summer (here) for their famous hot dog. It was a little on the sweet side but still really delicious. Methinks it's time to make it down for the Grilled Pastrami.

Click (here) to see the original post.

Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?
Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com

My buddy Eugene is going to be pissed, he loves that show - he would have wanted to know about this.

Luckily, Kaitlin headed over to the set and wrote a post about it on her own blog. Here's an excerpt:

Harvard Square is not a large place, and as luck would have it the camera and lighting crew were already setting up when my mom and I strolled out of the T (subway for non-Bostonians) at 3:50pm. We hung around the crew, chatted them up, took photos, and asked where else filming had taken place that day. We quickly found out that Connie Britton & Aimee Teegarden had already filmed scenes at Tufts University, Boston College and Boston University earlier in the day, and that this would be the second outdoor scene of the day, and also the final scene to take place in Boston. It seems that our little Julie Taylor might be venturing off to college in Red Sox Nation!

Kaitlin's also got a bunch of great pics from the filming on her page.

Click (here) to check out her post.

Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?
Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com

After all, the SAT's were only a mere 5-6 years away. The book in question was a compilation of several Charles Dickens novels. And so at a very early age, I learned to hate Dickens.

But it grew on me as I got older and I was required to reread those books for school in highschool. Starting last week and running until the end of the month is a production of A Tale of Two Cities at the Wheelock Family Theatre.

Set during the tumult of the French Revolution, A Tale of Two Cities vividly dramatizes the influence of historical and political upheaval on the individual. It follows the intertwined fortunes of a French Aristocrat who reject’s his family’s tradition of terrorizing the lower classes; a physician whose long imprisonment has left him a symbolic hero for the oppressed; a drunken lawyer who finds meaning in life through an requited love; and a mob leader whose sheer rage at the degradation of the lower classes demands vengeance. This new adaptation of the Dickens classic poses questions as pressing today as they were two centuries ago.

Bloggery meda rep Dwillens is going to check it out next weekend. You should too. Bring the kids. You're never too young to learn what a guillotine is. Just kidding, the program description says it's for ages 11 and up. Leave the really young kiddos at home.

Click (here) for details.

Know of Any Interesting Boston News or Events That You'd Like to Share?
Email me at beantownblog@gmail.com
