Kim Kardashian Coming to Gypsy Bar - 11/13

I still don't actually understand why Kim Kardashian is famous. But that could be because I've never watched any of the TV shows that she's on. She is pretty hot though, that I definitely give to her. And she's coming to Boston. On Friday 11/13 - she's going to be hosting a party at Gypsy Bar.

Cabs & Credit Cards

I complained about this once already (here) but it bears repeating because I just had another round of horrible interactions with cab drivers this Halloween weekend AND I saw that Adam over at Universal Hub did a post on it as well (here).

SuperMark reports that when his cab driver told him after an $18 ride that his cab's credit-card reader was broken, he told the guy he only had $8 on him and that he was breaking the law by driving around with a busted reader. Miraculously, the cab driver managed to get the reader to work.

I usually walk or take the T when I go somewhere that doesn't have parking because I hate taking cabs.

Number one, fifty percent of the time, they end up taking a longer route than necessary in order to rack up the bill. I LIVE here, please stop making insane excuses for the obviously longer routes. Number two, for machines that were just installed less than 6 months ago, there sure are a lot of broken credit card machines out there.

Here's the part I liked the most, that came from a commenter on Adam's post. You can now file complaints online (here). Please try not to crash their servers.

Forbes Says Boston is the 4th Safest City

Interesting little article in the Boston Business Journal recently saying that according to Forbes, Boston is the 4th safest of the 4o largest cities in the US. Color me pleasantly surprised. I think I'm probably just jaded because I sit and read the local news all day and it just seems like there's tons of crime. It also doesn't help that one of my good friends is and ER doc and he's always telling me about the gun shots and stabbings he gets to deal with.

The Greater Boston area is the fourth-safest place among the largest 40 cities in the U.S., according to a ranking by Forbes. The rankings take into account each city’s 2008 levels of violent crime, workplace fatalities rates, traffic death rates and natural disaster risk.

Minneapolis-St. Paul ranked No. 1 and has the nation’s lowest workplace fatality rate. Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis was No. 2, with the nation’s lowest natural disaster risk. Portland, Ore., with the lowest violent crime rate, was No. 3.

Ok after seeing who beat us, I'm going to go out on a limb and say I'd rather be fourth than live in Milwaukee. Sorry to those of you reading who are from Milwaukee. I have nothing against you guys, I drank a lot of your "Best" back in college. I just prefer Boston.

Uma Thurman Coming to Boston - 11/7

Uma Thurman is going to be in Boston hosting the Room to Grow Fall Gala on November 7th. I'm trying to remember if she's been in town recently, and I don't think she has. I thought maybe she had won the Hasty Pudding award at some point, but the last two years were Renee Zellweger and Charlize Theron. Regardless, she's coming in about a week. Get your dancing shoes ready.

Room to Grow Fall Gala with special co-chair, Academy Award-nominated actress Uma Thurman. The Amherst, Massachusetts-raised star will lend her support to the deserving organization during its Marquee fundraising event at Boston Center for the Arts’ Cyclorama.

1000 Words: Banh Mi

In case you were wondering what I had for lunch today. I had a couple of banh mi (vietnamese sandwiches) from Mei Sum in Chinatown not to be confused with Maxim's. Off the top of my head I can think of four different places that make banh mi in Chinatown. I like Mei Sum the best.

I'll spare you the details as to why I like it theirs the best - you're better off just doing a taste test on your own.

I usually get the beef ones, which typically contain: beef, mayo, carrot, radish, onion, cucumber, and cilantro. For $2.75, I prefer these over burgers from Wendy's or McDonald's.

Red Sox outfielder Jason Bay will drop by the Virtual Press Box on Thursday, Oct. 29, at noon to take questions in the third installment of WEEI.com’s Thursday baseball chat series.

In 2009 — his first full season as a member of the Red Sox after coming to Boston at the 2008 trade deadline — Bay hit .267 with a .384 on-base percentage and .567 slugging mark, finishing third in the American League with 36 homers, second with 119 RBIs, and led all A.L. outfielders with a .921 OPS. His performance earned Bay his third career All-Star nod.

W Hotel Opens Thursday - 10/29

We're just two days away from the opening of the W Hotel. I've been eagerly awaiting it's arrival ... you guys know how I love to go to hotel bars. It'll be tough to beat out the Intercontinental (they are the reigning champ). But it will be interesting to see who wins out for second place, the new W or the current contender: the Liberty Hotel.

Officials at the W Boston, a 28-story hotel that opens Thursday with 235 rooms and 123 residences, sifted through 7,000 applications over the summer to find 300 candidates to carry out its unique brand of corporate culture. W employees are encouraged to act like the cast of a theatrical production, with hotel guests in the starring role: Housekeepers are called “stylists’’ and elevators are called “lifts.’’ Hotel staff is also encouraged to use some words that begin with “W.’’

“W’s overall intention is still to be the coolest place in town,’’ said Eva Ziegler, global brand leader for W Hotels. “The target audience are the trendsetters - people who are interested in the latest, newest, hippest, coolest. “

Ok, so I'm not trendsetter, nor have I ever been described as hip, but gosh darn it, I'm definitely cool. At least that's what I tell myself.

Harry Potter Exhibit at Museum of Science

I'm a big fan of Harry Potter. I actually remember when I started reading the books back in high school, which is now over a decade ago ... wow. So I was pretty sad that I didn't get to attend the preview event for the new Harry Potter exhibit at the Museum of Science. But, Bloggery Media Rep Dan did get go to and this is what he had to say:

This past Thursday I had the pleasure of visiting the Museum of Science for a sneak preview of the Harry Potter exhibit. While there, I had the opportunity to speak to Matthew Lewis, the actor who plays Neville Longbottom about his impression as he toured the exhibit. The exhibit, which opened Sunday, is truly a required trip for any Harry Potter fan.

The exhibit consists of props and artifacts from each of the Harry Potter films. In some cases, entire walls of the set were removed and shipped to Boston. In fact, to accommodate one window of the Great Hall, a ceiling at the Museum of Science was knocked out! The result is a unique trip through the films that truly recreates the wonder of the books.

The most remarkable feature of the exhibit was the extraordinary attention to detail. Not only were all the props used in the movies exceptionally precise, but the exhibit itself was intentionally arranged as it took you from the sorting ceremony, to the Hogwarts Express, through the Forbidden Forest, to the Great Hall, and everywhere else in between. Even the museum employees working the exhibit add to the ambiance as they all speak in impeccable British accents and, when asked, will all tell you they hail from "London proper". In the end, I truly felt like I had had an experience unique from all the movies and books.

A perfect example, among the many, many available, of the intricacies of props on display is the collection of The Daily Prophets at the exhibit. Each newspaper only appears for seconds on camera, but each of these is complete with real articles corresponding to their headlines regarding the goings-on in the Harry Potter universe. According to Matthew Lewis, these detailed props created an environment on set helped the actors truly live their roles; these newspapers were not simply props, but were part of a living breathing universe. This detail was visible throughout the exhibit, from the 20,000 real feathers used to make the hippogriff Buckbeak, to the precision of the Tri-Wizard cup.

Even the portions of the set that did not ever make it on film were quite meticulous. For example, although the Hungarian Horntail dragon Harry faces off with in the movie was entirely computer generated, a life size bust of the dragon was created to be scanned in. The advantage of creating a life-sized model was to maximize the detail present in the final product.

With all of these little touches, it was quite apparent to me just how these films cost hundreds of millions of dollars in total!

So, while I certainly questioned why an exhibit consisting of the props of a movie about magic was in a museum dedicated to science, I certainly enjoyed myself and truly found the experience... magical (sorry, I had to).

Wow, the man is verbose isn't he? But he's also quite convincing. I'm thinking of maybe making a trip over this week.

Obama's Speech at MIT

If you're like me, you missed Obama's speech at MIT. I was busy during the time of the live webcast, but I did get to read it afterwards when the Globe printed a transcript of it. I figured at least a few of you are in the same boat as me, so here's a couple of excerpts. If you'd like to read the rest (it's five pages long) click the link below.

Thank you very much. Please, have a seat. Thank you. Thank you, MIT. (Applause.) I am -- I am hugely honored to be here. It's always been a dream of mine to visit the most prestigious school in Cambridge, Massachusetts. (Applause.) Hold on a second -- certainly the most prestigious school in this part of Cambridge, Massachusetts. (Laughter.) And I'll probably be here for a while -- I understand a bunch of engineering students put my motorcade on top of Building 10. (Laughter.)

Now, Dr. Moniz is also the Director of MIT's Energy Initiative, called MITEI. And he and President Hockfield just showed me some of the extraordinary energy research being conducted at this institute: windows that generate electricity by directing light to solar cells; light-weight, high-power batteries that aren't built, but are grown -- that was neat stuff; engineering viruses to create -- to create batteries; more efficient lighting systems that rely on nanotechnology; innovative engineering that will make it possible for offshore wind power plants to deliver electricity even when the air is still.

MIT the most prestigious school in Cambridge. I like the way that sounds...

Gabriel from Gossip Girl Joins The Social Network

I've watched a handful of Gossip Girl episodes. Not the current season, some of the old stuff. I don't quite remember who Gabriel is. But if you see him walking around town, it's because he word is that he's joining the cast of The Social Network (the Facebook movie).

According to blog The Playlist, which picked up on filmmaker Richard Kelly's Twitter account, a single actor has been cast: 23-year-old Armie Hammer, best known for the role of moneyed sleazebag Gabriel on teen drama "Gossip Girl."

A thread on screenwriter Aaron Sorkin's Facebook page reveals that additional young actors cast include Max Minghella, Rooney Mara, Dakota Johnson, Brenda Song, andJosh Pence--but no character names were provided.

"The Social Network," which kicked off filming in Boston this week, is an adaptation of Ben Mezrich's unauthorized Facebook tell-all, "The Accidental Billionaires." Founder Mark Zuckerberg will be played by actor Jesse Eisenberg, while pop star Justin Timberlake will play Valley it-boy Sean Parker.

Pairings Opens 10/26

I never actually ate at Bonfire when it was around. In terms of celebrity chef restaurants, I tend to gravitate towards Barbara Lynch's places rather than Todd English's. For those of you that hadn't heard, Bonfire closed down and will reopen as Pairings next week on 10/26. And if I remember correctly, Todd English isn't affiliated with the new restaurant.

Pairings, relaxed social dining accented by an extensive list of wines by the pour and innovative small plate options - this evolution of the restaurant is a meritage of warm autumnal tones, textural & tactile fabrics & dark wood, juxtaposed with natural light & vaulted ceilings.

Boston Underwater Festival - 10/24

Concerned about global warming? Want to meet up with others that share your concern? There's going to be an event going on this weekend at Christopher Columbus park to raise awareness

On Saturday October 24, hundreds of people from around the Greater Boston area will gather for the Boston Under Water Festival on Boston’s water front, an event to raise awareness about the threat that Katrina-like flooding poses to the city if action is not taken to stop global climate change.

Participants at the tongue-in-cheek event will wear goggles, snorkels, life vests and other aquatic props, and the event will culminate in a photograph of hundreds of people posing for a human-and-sandbag “sea wall”. The event is one of more than 2,000 actions in over 150 countries to call on President Obama and other world leaders to secure a fair, ambitious and binding global deal in Copenhagen this December at the UN Climate Change Conference.

WHO: Organizers include the 350 Massachusetts Coalition, Greenpeace USA, the Somerville Climate Action Network, Massachusetts Powershift, the JP Greenhouse, the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Boston, The Williams Agency and the Mass Council of Churches.

WHAT: Tongue-in-cheek climate festival to draw attention to Katrina-like flooding that Boston will face if action is not taken to stop global warming.

WHEN: 3:00 p.m., October 24th, 2009

WHERE: Christopher Columbus Park, next to the Aquarium T stop.

David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic - 12/3

This one is for the ballers/golfers out there. Normally, I only write about stuff going on in Boston, but this one involves Red Sox players and a magical place that I visited last year called Cap Cana.

On December 3-6, 2009, Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will host the second annual David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic at Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic. The star-studded event benefits the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, providing children in New England and the Dominican Republic access to the pediatric critical care they need to live full and productive lives.

The annual event is held at Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic, one of the most spectacular resort communities in the world. Guests will stay at the five-star luxury Sanctuary Cap Cana Golf & Spa, overlooking the turquoise waters and pristine beaches of the Caribbean Sea. The tournament itself will take place at the Jack Nicklaus-design and signature golf course, Punta Espada. The 72-hole resort, selected as The Best Golf Course in the Caribbean and Mexico by Golf Week Magazine, has eight holes that play spectacularly along the Caribbean Sea, with stunning views of the white sand beaches.

When I went to DR, we stayed in Punta Cana, but we took a day trip out to Capa Cana and let me tell you, if you were to ask me to describe it, I'd tell you to picture your favorite Corona commercial with the beaches and palm trees and white sand - that's what Cap Cana is like.

Littlenecks Bar & Grill Opens Today!

Those of you who know me know that I love to eat and that I love to try new restaurants. And it seems that there are a handful of restaurants opening soon. Jean Georges place at the W, the restaurant that's replacing Bonfire (which I'm going to write about next) and also Littlenecks Bar & Grille which opens today!

Chef Tony DeRienzo, the owner and Executive Chef of Waterfront Grille on New Bedford Harbor, will open the doors to his new restaurant in South Weymouth at 4:30pm on Thursday, October 22nd. Littlenecks Bar & Grill is located at 1073 Main Street (Route 18), along “Medical Mile,” in the space formerly inhabited by Acapulco’s Restaurant.

Littlenecks Bar & Grill is a casual atmosphere with a contemporary twist. The restaurant boasts an immense lounge area—seating 35 at the bar, and another 40 in the bar area—surrounded by seventeen high-definition plasma screen TVs and a large projection screen. The dining room overlooking the open kitchen allots seating for 150. The main focal point of the restaurant is the 8-seat Expedition Sushi Bar which separates the bar area from the dining room. At the sushi bar, guests watch as a chef hand-prepares creations a mere one-foot away from them.

I'm typically a downtown dining kind of guy (I just had to googlemap Weymouth to see where it is). But that's not to say I won't leave my comfort zone now and again to try something new. I think the furthest south I've been is to eat in Quincy. Actually, I take that back, I did eat at the Taco Bell in Brockton once. Perhaps it's time for a field trip.

Obama Coming to MIT - 10/23

Security is going to be tight on the MIT campus this upcoming Friday. President Obama is coming to town to give a speech on clean energy.

It is my great pleasure to announce that on Friday, October 23, President Barack Obama will be visiting MIT, where he will deliver an address in Kresge Auditorium on clean energy after meeting some of the MIT faculty and students whose work centers on energy. The President will be joined by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick.

President Obama’s decision to speak about energy from our campus is a high honor — and one that can truly be shared by the entire MIT community. Students, faculty and staff at the Institute are helping to frame the national policy debate on energy, push the frontiers of energy research, and revitalize energy education. With our flagship energy initiative — MITEI — MIT is bringing real-world solutions to the most challenging problems in energy.

Beantown Bloggery Facelift

Ok, just like I promised, I've revamped the 'ol Bloggery based on suggestions that you guys gave me via email or comment.

I would have done it sooner, but like I mentioned a couple weeks ago my macbook died. And pardon my rant, but the folks at the Apple Genius Bar want $1300 to fix the macbook that I only paid $1400 for. Can we say highway robbery? Needless to say, my one year affair with Mac is over. It's back to PC's after Windows 7 launches. In the meantime I'm reduced to using my backup laptop - a super old Sony Vaio with a busted screen - I hafta plug it into an external monitor so I can use it. Sad, I know.

Based on your suggestions, I did the following:
1. Made the template a lighter color
2. Put full blog entries back on the homepage
3. Added the timestamps back on.

Louis Boston Moving to Fan Pier

The title says it all. I'm suprised it took this long to find a new location, but the article mentions that it was due to the roller coaster ride that has been the real estate market here of late. It was back in May of 2008 that Louis Boston announced that they wouldn't renew their lease (here).

Clothing retailer Louis Boston has signed a lease for a 22,000-square-foot retail space at Fan Pier. Louis Boston will make the move next spring, at which point it will vacate its current retail space on Berkeley Street in Boston's Bay Bay.

Louis Boston, which will be joined by the Louis Café and Salon Mario Russo which operates a satellite salon out of the Back Bay store, will initially be housed in one of the temporary buildings before transitioning to a permanent retail space at the development.

Any readers out there shop at Louis Boston? Will you still go once it moves to Fan Pier?

Market by Jean-Georges Opening - 10/29

I'm pretty psyched for this restaurant opening. I haven't had a chance to eat at Jean-Georges in NYC, but it's one of the few Michelin 3 Star restaurants in the US. Jean Georges' restaurant "Market" is opening next week in the new W Hotel.

Menus are being conceived, and sous chefs are doing a little light stretching while preparing for hurricane Jean-Georges Vongerichten, the culinary titan about to make windfall in our fair city.

Behold Market by Jean-Georges, opening next Thursday at the brand-new W Hotel in the Theatre District.

Speaking of the (still being finalized) feast, prepare for a greatest hits list from JGV's NYC scenes/eateries like Spice Market and Mercer Kitchen, with French, American and Asian flavors.

Yummmmmmm!

Cellphones > Sex

File this one under 'hilarious.' Apparently, a good number of Bostonians prefer their cell phones over sex. This prompted me to think about it a little while and I think I could give up my cell phone for a year. But I don't talk much on the phone other than for work related stuff. What I wouldn't be able to give up is hi-speed internet access.

In fact, according to a new survey from Samsung Telecommunications America, 31 percent of adult Bostonians would rather forgo sex for an entire year, rather than give up their mobile phones for the same amount of time.

When it came to the battle of the sexes, however, Boston women (38 percent) were more willing than men (19 percent) to ignore their sex lives versus dropping their mobile phone use.

It might actually do us some good to not be tethered to our phones all the time. Who knows?
