Presented by The Calguns Foundation and Calguns.net

Thursday, June 20 7:30pm – 9:19pm

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringedTo encroach upon in a way that violates law or the rights of another..” – United States Constitution, Amendment II Newtown school shooting. Aurora theater shooting. Tucson supermarket shooting. Are visceral reactions to tragedies trumping the words of our forefathers? Should we allow fear and the growing concern over public safety to limit our civil liberties? Dead Patriot Films presents “Assaulted: Civil Rights Under Fire,” a documentary that brings audiences to the center of the controversy over the issue that is dividing our nation – gun control. Narrated by Ice-T, a critically acclaimed rapper and actor, the film takes a critical look at current gun laws and the rising movement to restrict the rights guaranteed by our Second Amendment. With the original intention of empowering a citizenry’s ability to defend themselves against a corrupt or tyrannical government, the concept today may seem farfetched or the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster. However, it has happened throughout U.S. history. And long before gun control was positioned as a “common sense measure” to combat violence, it was used as a means to oppress certain minority groups. Presently, the growing trend in gun control favors the wealthy and privileged, who leverage their connections to ensure their Second Amendment rights and safety, while those of lesser means struggle. Informative and emotionally charged, “Assaulted: Civil Rights Under Fire” is an eye-opening look at the genesis of the Second Amendment to the Constitution, leading the audience to rethink the issues surrounding gun control, and the effect on civil rights and libertyfreedom from control, interference, obligation, restriction, hampering conditions, etc.; power or right of doing, thinking, speaking, etc., according to choice.. After all, what you don’t know can kill you.

Millions Are On the Dole

The number of American households on food stamps reached a new record high in March, according to new data released by the Agriculture Department.

The number of individuals on SNAP did not break any records but remained high, with 47,727,052 people enrolled in SNAP, receiving an average monthly benefit of $132.86.

NSA Whistle-Blower

The source of the bombshell leaks about the U.S. government gathering information on billions of phone calls and Internet activities risks decades in jail for the disclosures if the U.S. can extradite him from Hong Kong, where he says he has taken refuge after saying his sole motive was to “inform the public.”

Edward Snowden, 29, who claims to have worked as a contractor at the National Security Agency and the CIA, allowed The Guardian and The Washington Post to reveal his identity Sunday. Snowden, in a video that appeared on the Guardian’s website, said two NSA surveillance programs are wide open to abuse.

“Any analyst at any time can target anyone. Any selector. Anywhere,” Snowden said. “I, sitting at my desk, had the authority to wiretap anyone, from you or your accountant to a federal judge to even the president if I had a personal e-mail.”

The Young Are Brainwashed!

Almost 50 students at the University of Colorado Boulder voluntarily — sometimes gleefully — signed a huge, fake thank-you card to the Internal Revenue Service on Tuesday. The card expressed gratitude to the IRS for its extensive efforts to target conservative and religious groups for audits and protracted nonprofit-status processing.

A merry conservative prankster named Caleb Bonham is the prime mover behind the YouTube stunt, reports The College Fix. Bonham was active as a College Republican at nearby Colorado State University before graduating in 2011.

The card is a giant piece of white poster board with the words “THANK YOU IRS” emblazoned in block letters. The set piece also reads: “TEA PARTY DESERVE IT”

Firearm Basics – A beginner’s guide to the basic working parts of Rifles, Shotguns and Handguns.

All Firearms have three basic groups of parts, these include the Action, The Stock, and the Barrel.

ACTION: The action is really the guts of the gun. It includes all the moving parts that load, fire, and eject the firearms shells or cartridges.

STOCK: The stock (or Handle) of the gun in composed of two pieces (the Butt and the fore-end).

BARREL: A guns Barrel is the long metal tube, bored out to provide an exit path for the discharging projectile. Once the projectile is fired, it’s forced down the barrel and out of the muzzle by expanding gas forces. In a rifle or a handgun, the bullet travels through the barrel; in Shotguns the Shot or the Slug is shot through the barrel.

Most Firearms have similar parts, pictured below are the parts that one would find on a rifle.

Shotguns are a type of firearm that fires shells containing either shot (small round pellets) or a slug (a solid projectile). Below are the parts of a common pump-action shotgun.

Handguns are handheld short-barreled firearms. The picture below shows the common components found on a pistol and a revolver.

Breakdown of the basic components of a Firearm.

Bore: The bore in the inside of the buns barrel through which the projectile travels when fired.

Breech: The Breech is the area of the firearm that contains the rear end of the barrel, where the cartridge is inserted.

Cylinder: The Cylinder is the part of a revolver that holds cartridges in separate chambers. The Cylinder of a revolver rotates as the gun is cocked, brining each chamber into alignment with the barrel.

Grip: The Grip is the portion of a handgun that’s used to hold the firearm.

Hammer: The Hammer on a revolver is the part that strikes the firing pin or the cartridge primer directly, detonating the primer which discharges the gun.

Magazine: A Magazine is a spring-operated container, that can be fixed or detachable, which holds cartridges for a repeating firearm.

Muzzle: The muzzle of a gun is the front end of the barrel where the projectile exits the firearm.

Trigger: The Trigger is the lever that’s puled or squeezed to initiate the firing process.

Trigger Guard: The trigger guard is the portion of a firearm that wraps around the trigger to provide both protection and safety.

As a Corpsman with the Marines, I was always looking for multipurpose medical devices. When I was introduced to the Israeli Bandage by a friend a Major Surplus, I was hooked. I wanted to share with you a little history and a video from my Friend HossUSMC on how to use this cool medical device.

History

The Emergency Bandage (The Israeli Bandage,) was invented by Bernard Bar-Natan, a Holocaust survivor, who immigrated to Israel in 1979 and was drafted into the military there in 1983. During his service he saw a need for a dressing that didn’t exist.

What he envisioned, was for medics like himself, to not have to create field expedient pressure dressings and for bandages to evolve like everything else in the military had been. With a loan from the government in the 90s, he turned his idea into a reality and The Emergency Bandage was born.

Bar-Natan’s company, First Care, introduced the bandages to the U.S. Military in 2000 at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. It wasn’t much longer after that before elite units quickly adopted them for standard use.

Israeli Bandage

While the technical name is The Emergency Bandage, it’s a bit of a misnomer, as the Israeli is really a pressure dressing. It combines a sterile dressing, elastic bandage and pressure applicator capable of exerting up to 30 lbs. of pressure on a wound. The closure bar, which secures the bandage at the end of wrapping, can also be used to exert additional pressure.

The Israeli is truly a multi-purpose bandage and can be used as a make-shift tourniquet, ACE Wrap, or even a sling to immobilize an appendage. It’s truly a versatile item to include in your trauma kit or first aid kit. It can also be self-applied, even one-handed.

Usage and Application

Additions

Something new on the Israeli is the addition of a small tied string that runs throughout the bandage called the “Stop and Go Release.” One of the issues with the past version of the Israeli was that if you dropped them while wrapping, the bandage could potentially hit the dirt and become unusable. You certainly don’t want to be wrapping dirt into an open wound, that’s just asking for an infection.

In online posts today the leaders of Google and Facebook both said they didn’t know anything about the National Security Agency using a program called PRISM to access their users’ data. While neither Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg nor Google’s Larry Page did anything to explain what data they provided to the NSA via other means, they both clearly registered concerns over the tactics the agency was revealed this week to have used to get phone-record data from Verizon customers.

As MIT Technology Review reported today, the court order requiring all Verizon business phone records to be handed over on an ongoing basis shows the NSA using a new interpretation of the Patriot Act (see “NSA Surveillance Reflects a Broader Interpretation of the Patriot Act”). Both Page and Zuckerberg seem to be worried their companies will be subject to similar orders.

Page wrote of the revelation about the Verizon order:

“Until this week’s reports, we had never heard of the broad type of order that Verizon received—an order that appears to have required them to hand over millions of users’ call records. We were very surprised to learn that such broad orders exist… the level of secrecy around the current legal procedures undermines the freedoms we all cherish.”

As we head into the summer, lots of us like to spend our days outdoors. I love to camp and hike, however I always keep it safe by telling someone when I go, and when I am expected to be back home. Now there are two types of hikers that get into trouble, the novice and the expert.

The Novice is kind of self explanatory, however the expert thinks that they are above the need to take safety measures. Ask anyone who does search and rescue, and they will tell you that 9 times out of 10, most rescues could have been prevented with just a little bit of pre-planning and preparation.

When you are planning a hike, even a short day hike, preparation is the key to staying safe.

Leave a Detailed Trail Plan With a Family Member or a Friend

One of the best ways you can prevent becoming another statistic, is by telling someone where you’re going to be and when you expect to return home. Should something happen, and you fail to return home at the agreed upon time, that person should immediately call the local search and rescue teams to notify them of where you were hiking.

Your Plan Should look something like this:

A printable version can be downloaded here…

Leave a Detailed Trail Plan in your Vehicle

One of the first places Search and Rescue teams often search is the vehicle you left at the trailhead. Often times, concerned hikers will report a vehicle that’s been left abandoned for a long period of time. It’s a good idea to leave an extra copy of your plan in the vehicle so search and rescue teams know exactly where they should be looking and who they are looking for.

Your plan should include:

Your Departure Date & Time

Your Expected Return Date & Time

Your Starting Point

Your Destination

Your Intended Travel Route

Any Alternate Plans that you may have

Any communications gear you have including phone numbers or frequencies that you use.

And Any Medical Conditions you have.

Study Your Trail

Before ever stepping foot on the trail, you should have a pretty good idea of what that trail looks like, and what’s physically required to successfully complete the hike. Most trails are rated, and can be found by searching numerous online hiking databases.

You should also have a Topo map, and know how to use it. These maps can give you a wealth of knowledge including terrain, difficulties, waterways, vegetation and alternative routes.

Dress for Success

Don’t underestimate the importance of your clothing. Make sure you select clothing that is based on your environment and the weather you expect.

In a survival situation the clothes on your back, combined with what’s in your bag, will be your primary source of shelter and protection. Clothing is your first line of defense against the elements and is something that should never be overlooked.

If you become lost, stay calm and stay put:

If you become lost: stop, relax and analyze your situation. If you believe you can track yourself back to a identifiable location then do so. However, it you cannot find your way back to the right trail, immediately stop hiking to prevent wandering further away on an unknown path.

If you have a radio or a cell phone, now is the time to try and call search and rescue. If you can’t get a hold of anyone, staying put and relying on your original rescue plan is probably going to be your best option.

95% of all survival rescues take place in the first 72 hours of any survival situation. If you’re Lost, Staying Put and Staying Calm will maximize your chances of survival. The best thing you can do is remember that rescue is probably on the way, and then find ways to make yourself as visible as possible to the search and rescue teams.

Signaling Devices:

Cell Phones: Unless you’re going far into the backcountry, a cell phone is still an extremely useful tool for signaling for help. Over 75% of all Search and Rescue calls involve someone using a cell phone to call for rescue. Cell towers are popping up in areas that previously would have been considered to remote.

HamAmateur Radio Operator, or Amateur Radio Radio: In most areas of the country, I can usually hit some sort of repeater with my 2 meter Radio. If you frequently hike out in the backcountry, you may want to consider becoming a licensed hamAmateur Radio Operator, or Amateur Radio radio operator.

Personal Locator Beacons: If you frequently venture out into the backcountry, you should consider purchasing a Personal Location Beacon or a SPOT device that can be activated in an emergency. These devices will relay your position to a worldwide network of search and rescue satellites that will immediately notify search and rescue teams that you are in danger and where you are located.

You should also consider carrying the following signalling devices:

Flashlights

Reflective materials (an emergency blanket is a great dual purpose signaling device)

A small signaling mirror

An Emergency Whistle, which can be used to alert nearby search teams to your location.

As it turns out in the face of reality, action really does speak louder than words. I read several of the Blog sites posted on prepping, survival issues, arming for Armageddon and much of the impractical advice that is dished out as though hordes of experts have contributed their wisdom.

By Dr. John J. Woods, a contributing author to SurvivalCache.com

Personally or professionally I am nowhere near any kind of a prepperOne who prepares expert, but I know horse hockey when I smell it. Ironically you never read any of that overly inflated junk here on this website. There are other reliable prepping websites that I read as well, but this home place is the most well-rounded.

Mark Q

So, it is quite refreshing to find someone locally who albeit slowly but surely is getting his act together toward prepping for a Bug-In scenario. For the sake of privacy, I am going to call my prepping friend, Mark Q. He is very private to his fault (OpSecOperations Security, or OPSEC, is keeping potential adversaries from discovering our critical information. As the name suggests, it protects our operations planned, in progress, and those completed.), but as with all of us I suspect it is aided by a good honest dose of paranoia. These days that is not considered abnormal behavior.

PrepTo Prepare or a survival skill or piece item added to ones preparations. Justification

Around the fire ring at my own remote potential Bug-Out hunting camp, Mark Q discusses the reasons he wants to be a measure ahead of most should something catastrophic happen in this country. His reasons for prepping go even beyond the virtual everyday bad news we get about the poor economy, short gun supplies, ammo stocks diverted by government agencies purchasing and hording, rapidly inflating food prices, shortages of goods, and the scare over banking stability (see Cyprus) not to mention the fear of an over all government collapse. “Geez that ought to be enough to make anyone put back a case or two of beans and rice…..”

“I recently retired from my full time job as an instructor at a local school teaching metal trades, machine shop, and computerized machine operation. That was after a stint in the Navy as a readiness and supply seaman for Naval Special Warfare Unit,” profiles Mark Q. “I wanted to get settled in back at my home place, do some machine work on the side, put away some cash and really complete my prepping work just in case.”

Mark Q is not a conspiracy theorist, but a realist. “Where I worked I saw my student population ever more dependent on grants and loans to live on with no intention of ever repaying them. They would cover their required tuition, but then receive the balance of the funds to spend as they wished. It went for everything from rent, food, clothes, spinner wheels, pit bull pups, or whatever. I viewed this whole system as another form of welfare and I wonder just how long it can be sustained,” noted Mark Q. This is not unique to where Mark worked but is happening at every school in the country.

“I don’t wake up every morning to go out to collect my chicken’s eggs for the day glancing up in the sky looking for black helicopters or drones. But one day they might well be there or someone in a uniform at my front door with a federal list of my 4473s to pick up my legally purchased and owned firearms.”

“More importantly I am concerned about walking into the local grocery store and finding little or nothing to buy. I want to raise as much of my own food on site as I can. We cook a lot of Korean dishes, so we can grow our own vegetables and other products we like to eat,” says Mark Q.

So, Mark Q is practical in his discussions of prepping. There is no panic in his deliberations, but there are no hesitations either, like most of us, me included. If something bad happens here then he is way ahead of the prepTo Prepare or a survival skill or piece item added to ones preparations. curve, but if nothing happens, then he can still enjoy the fruits of his labors and planning.

Food Reliance

“First and foremost I plant a huge garden every spring and repeat with some additional plantings into the warm summer months. We grow a host of fresh vegetables including peas, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, okra, squash, corn, watermelons and cantaloupe and a number of specialty plantings we include in our Korean dishes,” says Q. “As different vegetables mature, we pick them and do our own canning. We maintain a good stock of canned food supplies that can last several months.”

Mark owns and maintains a medium sized utility tractor and the appropriate implements to disk and plant a large garden. It’s more like a mini-farm on open property right next to his house. His only problem is keeping the wild deer that come out of the adjoining woods from eating up everything. Of course, he has a strategy for that as well.

“I generate my own garden fertilizer from the droppings underneath my rabbit hutches. I raise domestic rabbits for food, not pets. At any given time I will have one or two buck rabbits and 2-3 female breeders. At the proper maturity, weight and size I process the rabbit meat, bag and freeze it or we are likely to eat some fresh.”

Mark Q also raises chickens in a coop built behind his work shop. During my last visit he had two roosters and several hens. He let my special needs 14 year old daughter gather the eggs, a first for her. We found a dozen or more brown eggs in the nest stalls. For the time being Mark does purchase commercial bagged chicken and rabbit feed from the local farm Co-OpObservation Post store. He has alternative plans for food stuffs to feed his “livestock” from garden plants and residuals.

Mark Q is also an accomplished hunter. At any given time he will have 2-3 processed deer in the freezer. They mostly do venison burger and smoked sausage from a local meat processor. He also hunts and consumes wild rabbits and squirrels.

Additionally, Mark is heavy into local freshwater fishing and also coastal saltwater fishing. In fair weather months he will hit the local lakes and ponds for catfish, bass, crappie, and bream. On the coast he fishes for redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and other saltwater species. When I was at his prepTo Prepare or a survival skill or piece item added to ones preparations. site recently we had a lunch of fried cobia in the work shop.

He also keeps stocks of regular food stuffs as well like flour, cornmeal, lots of big sacks of rice and some freeze dried food and canned goods. They use a lot of Korean sauces, spices, and condiments. He maintains a supply of 50 cases of bottled water at all times. If you nose around enough, one might also notice several cases of 12-gallon bottles of table wine. I can only guess that is for the cooking or the cook.

Utility PrepTo Prepare or a survival skill or piece item added to ones preparations. Work

Mark maintains enough gas generators on site to supply essential electrical power in the event of an outage. He started this during Hurricane Katrina which knocked out rural power for several days. Occasional ice storms can also be counted on to disrupt local utility power supplies. There is sufficient fuel kept on hand to power these units for many days if used wisely and sparingly.

A recent project that Mark completed was installing a water well and hand pump on his property entirely by himself. He researched the process for “drilling” pipe into the ground with a metal tipped drill pipe section. He bought all the materials locally and hand drilled the well.

He researched local water supply depths to get an idea of how deepExecutive Protection he might have to sink the pipe to hit fresh water. He has completed the project and upon priming the pump has fresh, clean, cold water. With this he can supply the family water needs, animal needs including three dogs, and irrigate the garden as well. Pretty smart prepTo Prepare or a survival skill or piece item added to ones preparations. planning I’d say.

Bug-In Security

Mark’s primary accomplishment in terms of security is the same as mine. He maintains an extremely low profile. His circle of friends is small and tight. He is very closed mouth on any details of his prepTo Prepare or a survival skill or piece item added to ones preparations. work often disguising it as other generic household projects. As his friend, I know better, but most do not.

“Being an active hunter both for recreational interests as well as supplying meat for the family, I am used to handling a wide variety of firearms. I have a more than adequate supply of weapons and ammo to keep my family safe. My son can also use firearms with good proficiency. My wife has her own handgun and knows how to use it,” remarked Q. He also secures all this firearms and ammo in a burglar proof steel safe.

“Our security system consists of a black Labrador retriever roaming freely on the outside of the house, and two small ankle chewers on the inside. The old lab will bark at any strange vehicle coming up the driveway, but is likely to roll over for a belly rub for anybody. The two inside dogs are another story. They will literally tear down the blinds off the window at anyone approaching the house. By then we are made well aware of anything coming up to the door. If it’s a stranger, then we have the Berettas ready.”

Utility Shop

Mark is a highly trained craftsman when it comes to running the lathe and milling machine in his shop. He is equally proficient with his plethora of hand tools, wrenches, hammers, and gauges. He can weld, cut and shape metal and other materials. He can build about anything with wood, nails, a saw and a hammer. He is a decent mechanic with anything nuts and bolts. He possesses skills beyond the basic elements needed by most preppers. Some of these skills we all need to learn especially basic mechanical tool use and building skills.

His outdoor metal building shop with a concrete floor also serves as a garage for his fishing boat and his ATV. It securely stores all of his equipment, tools, supplies, animal feeds, fuel, lubricants, hunting and fishing stuff along with other essential gear. All preppers should consider such a building when the budget can afford it. Secure storage is critical.

There are a lot more details about Q’s prepping plans and its execution. The point here is that Mark has created the foundation for his ability to sustain his family for a reasonable time in the event of a SHTFSh!t Hits the Fan event. He has developed provisions for food, water, security, self-reliance, and skills he can sell or trade to others. He has all of the most critical elements of the Bug-In prepTo Prepare or a survival skill or piece item added to ones preparations. pie filled. Let’s just pray he doesn’t have to use it. If he does, I’m moving to his house.

This weekend by my house is the gun show. Gun Shows are a great place to get a good deal, find that firearm that you are looking for in your collection, and you get to talk to others that enjoy firearm sports. Some of the things that you need to think about before you buy a used firearm are simple. The following points will help you make a decision to buy that piece you want to add to your collection. I do not profess to be a firearms expert; however I have bought and traded a few used firearms. I have yet to be disappointed by keeping to these points.

You get what you pay for

Always. A $100 gun will shoot like a $10 gun. If it doesn’t blow up in your hand. Forget the perfect bargain; be prepared to pay a fair price for a decent firearm. If it’s a high-dollar gun for rock bottom price, then something is not right about the deal. It’s broke, stolen, fake, used in a crime, something.

Do Your Homework

know the fair price for the gun in question. One issue that some people have is they impulse buy a firearm, when that happens you can get burned. However if you take your time do your homework and understand the market you can get a great deal and a good firearm.

While there are plenty of books listing used gun prices, a gun is worth whatever someone will pay for it. The only reliable source for actual gun values are completed sales (check gunbroker.com). Another excellent resource: specialty forums. It really all comes down to this: what’s the gun worth to you?

Stick to known commodities.

Like I stated before I am not a gun expert. I am assuming since you are still reading this article neither are you. A Colt 1911. will hold its value, a foreign knock-off .45 auto won’t. You will pay more for the Colt refer to my first point.

Buy a Common Caliber

Sticking with a common caliber also helps the resell potential. This path also puts you in the fat middle of options as far as accessories and ammo. If you buy an exotic round, you may have a hard time buying ammo, and it could be the reason the seller is selling.

Be prepared to walk away

Walking away will help you avoid paying more than you are willing to pay, buying a bad firearm and may even allow the seller think about his price point. If the deal does not feel right, listen to your gut, it is not right for you. Remember for the most part, buying a used firearm all sales are final.

Examine the Firearm Carefully

First things first: always exhibit safe gun handling technique. Verify the gun is unloaded, maintain muzzle discipline, and no finger on trigger. Ask for permission if you want to break it down or dry fire it. So now that you are thinking that I am being a safety nanny, this action shows the seller that you have some basic firearm knowledge. The seller will know that you will not be an easy mark.

Make sure the seller is also demonstrating safe handling. If not, be polite and walk away. If in a store setting, you can request another employee show you the piece. As for the gun itself, you don’t need to be an expert or gunsmith, just use some common sense.

What’s the overall appearance? Scratched and dented, finish faded, or like new? Avoid anything that looks abused, but don’t be scared of purely cosmetic issues (unless that’s why you’re buying it in the first place). If you can’t tell the difference, then stick with newish looking no visible damage only.

Any modifications? This can anything from scope, laser, grips, light, mag carriers, to trigger jobs and custom barrels. I tend to shy away from modified pieces (scopes excepted). I also tend to run away from trigger jobs. If I want a custom trigger, I’ll buy a stock piece and take it to a gunsmith myself. If you like it pimped out, fine, but don’t pay a premium for it. Sometimes the add-ons disguise the fact that the gun’s a dog to begin with. On high dollar custom jobs, there should be adequate documentation of work done and by whom.

Anything loose or rattling? Don’t force anything or put excess pressure on it, but if the stock or grips slide around be concerned. If it rattles or jingles, and various bits and pieces are loose, keep looking elsewhere.

Look at the screws carefully. The sure sign an amateur has been tinkering with the insides is if the screw heads are jiggered up. That’s where you use a wrong sized screwdriver and the head slips out of the slot on the screw. What’s left is some knarled up metal on the screw head. Avoid this.

Get yourself a bore light and carry it. Again verify the gun is unloaded, then take a gander at the inside of the barrel. In general your won’t be able to tell much beyond clean or dirty, but you can at least avoid glaring problems like bulged barrels or rust. A little dirt isn’t a problem, a lot can cause concern.

Work the action and (with permission) dry fire it once or twice. The action should be smooth and lock up firmly. The trigger should be smooth with average pull weight. Avoid triggers that are too light or too heavy. If the action tends to bind up, walk away.

Most modern firearms from big-name companies are solid, well-built pieces. There would have to be blatant abuse to actually screw one up. If all the above looks good upon examination, you’ll most likely have a good gun. Not guaranteed, but most likely.

Buy from mainstream sellers

In general, I recommend gun shops. Most gun shops will deal new and used, and are willing to work trades if the gun in question doesn’t work out for you. Also, they are most likely not going to sell a broken or unsafe gun, assuming it’s a reputable shop.

While gunbroker.com is a relatively safe marketplace, there’s nothing like inspecting a weapon in person [see: above]. Buying a gun from a bricks and mortar dealer using the service adds another level of security. Some gun shops will let you meet at their store to make the deal. In California you need to make your trade through a FFL anyway and that store will be happy to help you with that process.

The Pawn Shop Firearm

Pawn shops are a big risk. I actually enjoy browsing pawn shops, in the same way my wife likes antique stores. I have a pawn shop that I like to go to because the owner is a real gun guy. He knows his stuff and we talk shop all the time. That being said some shops are not that great and often have the shoddiest guns on display. They employees do not know anything about the firearms on display and they are priced on the high side of the market. If you know your stuff give them a try, if this is your first attempted at a used firearm don’t go to a pawn shop

Make Your Move

Don’t be afraid of used guns, but maintain a clear head while shopping. Use common sense when you are making a deal. Ask questions and for paperwork on the firearm. Bring a friend that has more knowledge then you. Don’t hesitate to ask the seller to have the firearm inspected by a qualified gunsmith that you have chosen (some may charge.) Have a good outlook, enjoy the process, shop smart and good luck!

The progressives love to tax and regulate. They hide behind the idea that taxing is all about the need to provide services, and regulation is need to protect the “little guy.” I call bull on that line of logic. As far as providing service, just look at the news on the IRS over the last few weeks. If government services are so great, why are private schools so sought after?

Look at the people that line up to go to the Apple store and wait for hours but can’t stand waiting in line at the DMV. That’s because consumers love good products and good service. Businesses tend to provide reasons for lining up, while governments simply force us to.

Conservatives and libertarians have rejoiced in the power of the Internet. Web-based businesses increase competition, squeezing down costs and forcing their stodgy competitors to improve or collapse. But the Internet has come of age, and the little guy start up are now the big business and are subject to the temptation of cronyism as any brick-and-mortar store.

Amazon.com serves as an ideal example.

“A few years back, Amazon was waging a scorched-earth campaign against states that attempted to collect sales taxes from internet businesses,” blogger Megan McArdle reminds us. Now the company is actually lobbying in favor of federal legislation that would force companies to collect sales taxes for the buyer’s home state.

The difference now is that Amazon is large enough that collecting sales tax is not a burden. Plus it can afford all the lawyers it will need to deal with rules written by thousands of tax jurisdictions nationwide. Small retailers can’t afford that hassle, so Amazon is using the government’s power to tax as a way to reduce competition. That won’t be good for consumers in the long run.

Craigslist is another profitable website that destroyed its newspaper competition in a fair fight and now wants to protect its turf. “Craigslist has sued or issued cease-and-desist letters to dozens of startups in recent years,” reports Gordon Crovitz in The Wall Street Journal. “Litigation is a common tactic to suppress competition, especially when overly broad statutes are available as cudgels.”

Craigslist is currently using a law written in 1984—in the Dark Ages before Web commerce—to try to block competitors.

Companies using the power of the government, to help them make money by blocking out competition is as American as Apple IPie. The progressives love to point out at the Anti-Trust Laws of the early 1900’s. These are the same laws that big business used to crush competition.

There are two business models on display: Young start-ups usually try to find ways to produce newer or better products at lower prices. But as companies get older and larger, they too often turn to using the power of government to rig the game, finding ways to use regulation to limit their competition.

So when you here the argument for the Marketplace Fairness Act (AKA The Internet Tax) movement look who is supporting it, and why.

Much like marksmanship, running an assessment and/or performing CPR is a perishable skill. To do that I will review the fundamentals of first aid, review a couple first aid treatments, and direct you toward local resources to take classes.

Experience

Some readers of this blog are aware that I personally have responded to 911 calls and disaster areas where emergency medical care needed to be implemented, patients assessed, began treatments and transported them to an appropriate medical facility. More on appropriate facilities Later.

One of the first hallmarks of administering first aid is: “To Do No Harm”. A simple concern of moving a patient can result in additional serious harm. It is important that you do not perform any procedure you are not trained to do and that you completely evaluate the situation before intervening for your own safety. To reduce the possibility of you causing harm while administering care, it is important that you are trained in first aid. This will help you determine the extent of possible injuries and the required intervention for the welfare of the patient.

At anytime during the day in any location you might be in a position to render first aids. In any environment, it is important to understand the actions you are taking and make informed decisions on your treatment protocols.

The four main objectives of administering first aid are the same regardless of the environment or injuries. So whether you are at home treating a burn or in a remote environment stabilizing a compound fracture the objectives are the same.

These four objectives of first aid are;

Prevent further injury

Activate EMS

Facilitate transport to an appropriate medical facility.

Let’s address each one of these then move on to some of the basic treatments you will learn when you take a first aid courses.

Preserve Life

This is clearly the first priority in the process of administering first aid. Surveying the scene is extremely important as you approach an injured person. Examples, I have responded to automobile accidents where bystanders trying to help were running across major four lane highways, almost causing additional accidents and harm to themselves. Secondly, I have responded to scenes where witnesses acting as rescuers with good intentions were pulling people from cars who may have had serious spinal injuries when there was no immediate need to do so. These examples of automobile accidents are the most common traumatic scenes and easy for people to relate too.

With these two examples fresh in your mind, stressing the importance of surveying the scene to determine any threats to safety before progressing to aid any injured parties. It is of no value to injure or kill yourself or others by prematurely rushing in to help an injured person.

Prevent Further Injury

There are numerous ways to exacerbate or make worse, an injury by unnecessary intervention. So the first step in administering first aid is: Evaluation of the patient or we like to say, conduct a patient assessment. This is a detailed and extensive process.

Using a systematic approach to examine an injured patient by starting at the head and working toward the feet, or “Head to Toe” is essential to understanding the extent of the patient’s injuries and insuring that you do not miss an injury. It is wasted effort and no help to a patient to bandage wounds if they are not breathing. Not all first aid classes teach this skill but it is a good one to read about, learn and most importantly, practice.

One of the best means to prevent further injury is not to move any patient until all treatments have been administered. This are not always possible, but if you do not need to move the patient, then do not.

Activate the EMS System

Activating the EMS system as quickly as possible (if available) is of utmost importance. This action begins with the reduction in time between injury and the application of advanced treatment in a hospital setting. Once EMT’s and or paramedics arrive on the scene they have advanced training and advanced tools and medications that can significantly contribute to the survival of the patient. Never hesitate activating the EMS system.

Facilitate Transport to an Appropriate Medical Facility

Activating the EMS system also accomplishes transportation. For seriously injured trauma patients reaching a medical facility equipped and staffed for trauma patients is paramount to their survival. During the Korean War we learned that if a seriously wounded soldier arrived at a “M.A.S.H.” (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) unit or hospital within one hour, their survival rate was significantly higher than those who did not. This was later termed the “Golden Hour”, the time in which a patient was injured until they received definitive care. Not all hospitals are created equal. Not all hospitals accept ambulance transported emergencies. Some hospitals are equipped for Labor and Delivery but not Trauma. It is a good idea to find out what hospitals are in your area and what they are prepared to receive. For example, A range I shoot at has two hospitals within 15 minutes. One is a general emergency receiving hospital, the other is a Trauma center. So if someone on the line falls victim to a GSWGun Shot Wound to the thoracic cavity, they need immediate treatment and transport to the trauma center. It is of extreme essence to get severely injured patients to a trauma facility as soon as possible to increase their chances of survival. Thus, activation of the EMS system is an important part of rendering first aid.

The Big Three, Important Treatments

There are three vital treatments that one must be prepared to evaluate and treat in any emergency situation. Airway, Breathing and Circulation, known as the ABC’s of first aid. Correctly identifying a problem with one or more of the ABC’s and properly treating them can and will save a person’s life. Let’s investigate techniques you will learn in first aid classes to treat these problems.

Airway:

An open patent airway is essential for life. There are two primary airway obstructions: soft tissue and foreign object. If either issue exists, intervention will most likely be needed for the patient to properly breathe.

The first step is to determine if the patient is breathing. This can be as easy as asking their name. A talking patient is a breathing patient, A breathing patient has an open airway. If the airway is patent then the next step may be to do nothing and allow the patient to breathe on their own. If the patient is not breathing then it is essential to open the airway. Two ways to open an airway are the “Head Tilt Chin Lift” or the “Jaw Thrust” technique. The later should always be used if you suspect a spinal injury. It allows the rescuer to open the airway without moving the head and spine. A foreign object in the patient’s mouth must be removed and if the vomit the patient must be rolled onto their side to allow the vomit to drain.

This technique alone can save a person’s life. We have a mantra “Airway is King”.

Breathing:

The next step is to verify the patient is breathing. Even though you open the airway that does not necessarily mean the patient is or will start breathing. There are several methods to determine if a patient is breathing: observing the patients color, watching for the rise and fall of the chest and placing your ear close to the patient’s mouth, listening for air movement. The treatment for a non breathing patient is mouth to mouth or mouth to mask resuscitation. To deliver a breath you must place your mouth over the patient’s mouth and or what ever barrier you may have, then blow slowly and with good volume. Blowing fast and hard will increase the likelihood that the air will go into the patient’s stomach rather than their lungs causing them to vomit. You should continue to deliver breathes until help arrives or the patient starts breathing on their own.

Circulation:

Finally we get to “C” in the ABC’s, assessing a patients circulatory status. There are three primary methods for evaluating the circulatory system. First color, if their skin and mucus membranes are pink that is a good sign. Pale or Blueish on the other hand would be bad. Second pulse, if the pulse is between 80 and 100 that is another good sign. Above 100 is of concern however, take into consideration that the individual may be scared or anxious and that will affect the heart rate. Lastly, capillary refill is measured by squeezing the tip of the patient’s finger and watching the nail bed go white then releasing it and watching it return to pink. If this takes less than 2 seconds then the circulatory system is fine in that extremity. The longer this takes the worst the patient’s circulatory condition is and this is a sign of shock.

Trauma is the number one cause of death between the ages of 1 and 44. Bleeding is one of the top causes of death in trauma. So in most cases, the treatment of choice in a trauma situation is to stop the bleeding. Some treatments to stop bleeding are direct pressure on the affected area, followed by elevating the bleed above the heart, applying a pressure bandage and then if needed a tourniquet. Venous bleeding is easily controlled by direct pressure. Arterial bleeding may be controlled with direct pressure as well.

Training

Clearly there are other emergency situations like fractures, medical illnesses, bites and stings that require some form of first aid. The treatments for these types of emergency are covered in First Aid classes.

Basic first aid classes are excellent and will help you understand the very basic skills needed. But if you are planning on hiking, camping or are preparing to be more isolated for an extended period of time then I recommend more advanced training. Basic classes progress as such;

First Aid

Wilderness First Aid

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

These courses offer more in depth training and the ability to understand anatomy and physiology concerning medical problems as well as trauma. If you search your local area you may be able to find a class you can take one to two nights a week until completion.
There are a number of resources where you can take these classes. The American Red Cross (ARC), the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) are all nationwide organizations that provide first aid certifications that are nationally recognized. For an EMT or more advanced course you can contact your local vocational tech school or Jr. Colleges.

In summary, first aid is an essential skill you should know and can be valuable in a broad spectrum of environments. The classes are usually only several hours long and you will learn and practice life saving skills. I highly recommend you take classes based on your expected need. You can play a vital role in saving a life when properly trained and willing to step in.
