Invitation for Applications, Rockefeller Archive Center / ARNOVA, Fellowship for International Researchers

The Rockefeller Archives Center and Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action [ARNOVA] invite applications for a first International Research Fellowship. The purpose of this fellowship is to encourage and provide support for attendance at ARNOVA’s Annual Conference, and research using the Rockefeller Archive Center [RAC], by scholars from outside the U.S. and Canada. The fellowship award will provide $4000 intended to cover the costs of travel to and attendance at the ARNOVA Conference, and to the RAC for a time of research at the Archives.

Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate that they have a scholarly research project that will benefit from attending the ARNOVA Conference and requires research at the Rockefeller Archive Center . They must also have a record of prior scholarship, which may be a thesis or dissertation. Applicants must contact the RAC at least one month prior to applying for the fellowship so that they can clearly identify in the application substantial archival materials that are related to their research project. (Note: Information about the RAC and its collections can be found at http://archive.rockefeller.edu. )

Expectations

Applicants must plan on attending the entire ARNOVA Conference. (Conference registration fees will be waived.) In addition, they must plan on spending at least three days at the RAC for the purpose of conducting their research. The fellowship is expected to cover the full costs of travel, lodging, meals and incidentals. (No supplemental funds will be available.) They must also be able to obtain a travel visa for the dates of the ARNOVA Conference (November 15-17, 2007) and time spent at RAC. Half of the award will be provided two months prior to the dates of the conference, with the balance to be paid at the completion of the conference and the time of research.

Applications

Applicants should send a letter of no more than four pages describing the research project they will pursue, its purposes, and the methodology they will employ. This should also describe how participation in the ARNOVA Conference and use of the RAC will help move this project forward. (As noted above, contact with the RAC prior to sending in the application is necessary.) They should also include records of prior scholarly accomplishments – that is, graduate transcripts, certification of their advanced degree, or the like. They may include a short sample of scholarly writing demonstrating their research abilities.

Completed applications must be postmarked no later than May 15, 2007, and received at ARNOVA’s offices by June 1, 2007. The fellowship winner will be notified no later than July 1, 2007. Applications and supporting materials should be addressed to:

Design Innovation Scholarship - University of Plymouth

Applications are invited for a Scholarship in the Faculty of Arts, University of Plymouth for practice-led postgraduate research (MPhil/PhD) specialising in Three Dimensional Design. The Scholarship will commence on 1 October 2007.

We will consider proposals in any area of Design but would particularly welcome those from well-qualified applicants that relate to the following areas of our expertise:

- Design for a Sustainable Future
- Digital Design for Creative Manufacturing
- Design Thinking Expressed Through Making
- Approaches to Trans-disciplinary Design Methods.

The scholarship (UK/EU fees plus stipend of £12500 per annum for 2007/8) will be awarded to a new, full time student for 3 years (subject to satisfactory progress). Applications from non-UK/EU students are welcome with the expectation that funds have been secured to meet the difference in fee level. The successful candidate will have a good first degree, and preferably an MA or MDes (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline.

You will need to show potential to develop a range of appropriate advanced research skills. Scholarship applications will be assessed on a competitive basis reflecting scholarly, professional and industrial merit. We are concerned with the originality, viability and quality of the application and with its relevance and potential contribution to our research communities. The Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) based in the School of Media, Arts and Design at the University of Westminster is one of the UK`s leading research centres (RAE 5, 1992, 1996, 2001), and has an international reputation in media policy and economics, media history, and media audiences. The Institute hosts the University`s China Media Centre and Arab Media Centre. It is developing work in media audiences and identities, and Indian and African media. CAMRI is in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, which runs the UK`s oldest degree in media studies, a suite of Master`s programmes and an established ESRC recognised doctoral programme. We currently have an opportunity for two students to undertake an MPhil/PhD in media and communication.

RICHMOND, Va.— Fellowships for travel and accommodation are available for scholars of Islamic art to attend Rivers of Paradise: Water in Islamic Art and Culture at VCU\’s Qatar campus Nov. 4-6, 2007.

The Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development and the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Arts are offering 15 Hamad Bin Khalifa travel fellowships.

The Hamad Bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art strives to foster the development of an international community of researchers and scholars in Islamic art and cultures. The fellowship provides financial support for conference attendance and recognition of scholars from diverse geographic and cultural areas, including those from the less developed and less well-funded countries.

Many scholars, who more characteristically conduct research for years with minimal support, are having a hard time believing that these generous fellowships are merely to attend the symposium, and not to present papers, as is usual with travel fellowships.
Thirteen speakers from around the world from a variety of disciplines will explore the theme of water in the Islamic lands from southern Europe to South Asia from the 7th century to the present. Topics range from the supply and distribution of water to its role in religion and popular culture.

Attendance at the Rivers of Paradise: Water in Islamic Art and Culture Symposium in Doha, Qatar is an opportunity for advanced students and other scholars from around the world to meet and interact with one another. The fellowship will also allow students and scholars to visit Doha, one of the fastest-growing Islamic Art centers in the Middle East.
Sheila S. Blair and Jonathan M. Bloom, shared holders of the Hamad bin Khalifa Endowed Chair of Islamic Art at VCU and the Norma Jean Calderwood University Chair of Islamic and Asian Art at Boston College, and curators of the acclaimed current exhibition of Islamic art Cosmophilia, are convening the conference.

International PhD Scholarships in Risk Management Strategies in Fisheries Management, University of Southern Denmark and Tilburg University.

An International Ph.D. Scholarship is available at the Research school Centre of Fisheries & Aquaculture Management & Economics (FAME), a joint scholarship between University of Southern Denmark, Esbjerg and Department of Economics, Tilburg University, Holland.

The objective of this Ph.D. project is to investigate how risk theory and methods of risk management can be adapted to fisheries management so as to make fisheries management more effective in relation to situations with varying degrees of risks and uncertainties.

The main focus of this Ph.D. project is to investigate how risk analysis theories can be applied to fisheries management, both in relation to the management decisions and the phase of implementation. While biological uncertainties and risks have been addressed in fisheries advice, but need to be further developed, a systematic approach including also economical and social risks in fisheries management is still lacking and new initiatives for adapting the risk framework to fisheries management are needed. The Eni Corporate University announces a competition for an academic course that leads to a Masterâ€™s Degree in Energy and Environmental Management and Economics - MEDEA. The course is organized and managed by the Scuola Enrico Mattei.

The Master is offered to Italian and foreign university graduates that are interested in career paths within firms, authorities and other institutions operating in the energy and environmental sectors. For the Academic Year 2007-2008, the Scuola Enrico Mattei will assign a maximum of 50 scholarships.
Three programs of the MEDEA are offered:

Energy Industry Economics
Business Administration in Energy Industry
Managing Technical Assets in Energy Industry
The program is articulated on three phases, with an increasing degree of specialisation. All profiles consist of preliminary courses, followed by fundamental courses and by specialisation classes.The Academic Year runs for ten months, from September 5, 2007 through to June 27, 2008. Full-time attendance is required. Since courses are conducted in Italian and in English, an intensive Italian language course will be held during the summer of 2007. Those who have successfully completed the programme of study will be awarded a Masterâ€™s Degree in Energy and Environmental Management and Economics - MEDEA.

REQUIREMENTS
Admission is subject to the following requirements:

university degree in Italy, or an equivalent academic qualification abroad, in departments of: Business Administration, Chemistry, Economics, Engineering, Geology, Industrial Chemistry, International Law, Physics and Statistics;
Italian candidates must be under the age of 28 years and non-Italian candidates must be under the age of 32 at the beginning of the Master course;
good knowledge of the English language.
The course, moreover, can be attended also by people autonomously chosen by the Eni Companies.

The deadline for application is March 31, 2007 for foreign citizens and April 30, 2007 for Italian citizens. Italian candidates will attend the final selection in San Donato Milanese (MI); non-Italian candidates in Algeri, Almaty, Ankara, Beijing, Brussels, Budapest, Cairo, Lagos, London, Luanda, Madrid, Monaco, Moscow, New York, Sao Paulo, Tripoli, or in other offices of Eni, depending on their nationality.

International Summer School Programs at Universität Dortmund

Universität Dortmund cordially invites students from abroad to our annual Summer Program Dortmund. This international program will be held May 21 to July 27. Courses offered in 2007 focus on engineering and business, complemented by a program in cultural studies offered by our Department of Cultural Studies. These courses are designed for Dortmund and foreign students and will discuss comparative issues of the interplay between culture and technology.

Our target group for the year 2007 are students from partner universities who are finishing their bachelor programs or just entering the master phase. Language of instruction is English, but students are encouraged to use this opportunity to acquire some basic German language skills. Most lectures will be offered within our regular programs as well, so that our guests from abroad can team up with regular Dortmund students. Successful completion of courses will result in credit points which can be transferred to our partner universities. Students from our partner universities pay regular summer tuition fees at their home universities.

June to July is an excellent time to visit Europe. The weather is usually great with day temperatures of about 22°C, a good climate to work and to enjoy a trip downtown in the evening. On the weekends trips to interesting places such as Berlin, Paris or Amsterdam are possible, which are at a few hours ride from Dortmund. Germany has an excellent railway system with bargain offers during the weekends.

For 2007 entry, Brunel International are offering 20 half fee scholarships for one-year Masters students. Assistantships: Working Assistantship Type A: Two Yearsâ€™ Program.
Type A Assistantship will be granted to students enrolling in the
English-taught Master programs. They will have to work part-time 16 hours a
week as an assistant among different departments on campus to enjoy the
following:
1. Tuition fee is waived.
2. Dormitory fee is waived, living with 3 or 4 either local or
international students at school dormitory with Type A Assistantship.
3. NT $5,000 per month stipend is offered.

Type B: Assistantship for Two Yearsâ€™ Program.
Type B Assistantship will be granted to students enrolling in the
English-taught Master programs.
1. Half tuition fee is waived.
2. Half dormitory fee is waived.

Type C: Assistantship for Four Yearsâ€™ Program.
Type C Assistantship will be granted to students enrolling in the
undergraduate Chinese-taught Bachelor programs. Students will have to work
part-time 5 hours a week as an assistant among different departments on campus
to enjoy the following:
1. Tuition fee is waived.
2. Students pay their own accommodation and other personal living
expenses.

We are pleased to offer Law International Scholarships to all international undergraduate students commencing their studies in the Faculty Law in September 2007.

The scholarships are worth £1,500 per year each.

Eligibility and Award Criteria:

You must hold an offer of a study place and begin your undergraduate studies in September 2007 in the Faculty of Law.

You must be classified as overseas for tuition fee purposes.

The scholarships will be awarded automatically - no application is required in first or subsequent years.

The scholarships will be awarded unconditionally in the first year of studies. Award in subsequent years of study is subject to the achievement of 60% overall average mark.

The scholarships will take the form of a tuition fee reduction.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.

International experience is critically important in the educational and career development of American students, but it can also require a substantial financial investment. The Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. The program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia. The Gilman scholarship aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. The program seeks to assist students from a diverse range and type of public and private institutions from all 50 states.

Award recipients are chosen by a competitive selection process and must use the award to defray eligible study abroad costs. These costs include program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance and international airfare.

Gilman Awards
777 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000. Undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at 2-year or 4-year colleges or universities are eligible to apply.

Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. 25 Critical Need Language Supplements will be offered to Gilman Scholarship recipients during the 2006-2007 academic year.

The Nonprofit Sector Research Fund, a grantmakingprogram of the Aspen Institute in Washington, DC, offers the WilliamRandolph Hearst Endowed Fellowship three times annually. Thefellowship, which is based on academic excellence and need, is open toboth undergraduate and graduate students who are members of minoritygroups. The Hearst Fellow serves as an intern with the Fund. Throughthis program, the Fund seeks to introduce a diverse group of studentsto issues relating to philanthropy, volunteerism, and nonprofitorganizations. Recipients may arrange with their colleges oruniversities to receive academic credit for this experience.

The Nonprofit Sector Research Fund wasestablished in 1991 to expand understanding of nonprofit activities,including philanthropy and its underlying values, by making grants tosupport research undertaken by scholars and nonprofit practitioners.

Activities:

In his or her internship,the Hearst Fellow undertakes general research and program support forthe Fund’s grantmaking and outreach efforts.

Requirements:
The ideal candidate forthis fellowship is a highly motivated continuing graduate orundergraduate student from an underrepresented community. She or heshould have an excellent academic record and also have the following:

1. Outstanding research skills;
2. A background in the social sciences or humanities;
3. Excellent writing and communication skills;
4. Demonstrated financial need; and
5. American citizenship.
The student must be able to intern for 10-15 weeks at the Washington,DC, office of the Aspen Institute. We generally expect that Fall andSpring internships will be part-time (10-20 hours per week) and Summerinternships will be full-time. All travel and housing costs must becovered by the student.

Fellowship Stipend:
A fellowship grantof between $2,500 and $5,000 will be awarded, depending on therecipient’s educational level, financial need, and time commitment.

We are committed to make considerable contribution in the field of organic chemistry with emphasis on synthetic fluorine chemistry. We are focusing on the development of new methodologies, synthesis of fluorine-containing functional materials and bioactive compounds, asymmetric synthesis and biocatalysis.

The Institute for German Studies at the University of Birmingham is delighted to offer a full doctoral scholarship for entry in October 2007. The scholarship consists of tuition fees at home/EU level, plus a maintenance component at funding council rates.

The Institute for German Studies is the UK’s only centre for the social-scientific study of contemporary Germany and was rated 5A in the 2001 RAE. It is one of a global network of centres supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and is part of the University’s European Research Institute (ERI). With the ERI also hosting the University’s Graduate Centre for Europe, postgraduate students therefore benefit from a lively and supportive research environment.

Proposals are invited from outstanding candidates on the politics, international relations, economics, post-war history and/or culture of contemporary Germany, either by itself or in a comparative context. Candidates should have an excellent Master’s and/or first degree in a relevant area. The award is available for a maximum of three years, and is subject to satisfactory progression in the University’s annual progress reviews of research students.

Netherlands PhD Research Grants in Linguistics at Utrecht University

The Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS (Utrecht University) offers three research grants in its International PhD programme:

3 Grants in the International PhD Programme in Linguistics

Goal
The PhD places involve a research training and aim at the completion of a PhD dissertation within a maximum of three years. As part of their training, PhD students will take courses offered by the National Graduate School in Linguistics (LOT).

Qualifications
Applicants should have an MA degree (or nearing completion, expected graduation by August 2007) in theoretical linguistics, computational linguistics or experimental linguistics (language acquisition, psycholinguistics, phonetics, text linguistics) . Applications in the field of dyslexia are particularly welcome. Applicants should speak and write fluent English.

Grant conditions
The grant amounts to a monthly sum of ?1400, payable at the beginning of each month. It is allocated for a trial period of one year, to be extended upon positive evaluation of the student`s progress by a further two years (maximum). The grant entitles students to supervision, office and library facilities, assistance in finding housing as well as participation in the institute`s support system for linguistics- related expenses (including attending conferences and LOT schools).

For legal reasons, no grants can be offered to permanent residents of the Netherlands.

How to apply?
The deadline for receipt of applications is March 25th, 2007.

Applications (by regular mail or by e-mail) should include a letter of motivation and a 3-5p project proposal (a research question well-grounded in existing literature supplemented with a research strategy, provisional workplan and bibliography) . The application should also include a curriculum vitae including contact and personal details, transcripts of academic results, an MA thesis or alternative piece of written work, certified copies of most recent diploma and passport, and the contact details of two referees (names, affiliations and phone numbers or e-mail addresses). Preferably, reference letters are included.

If applicable, additional written work allowing us to assess the candidate`s suitability for the grant should be submitted by April 27th, 2007 (for example, a finished MA thesis or a more finished draft). Certified copies of diplomas and passport may also be submitted by this date, provided regular copies are included in the original application.

The Graduate School offers a high-level PhD programme with research opportunities in cellular, molecular, developmental, physiological, neuro-and evolutionary genetics and genomics. Plant, animal and microbial systems are equally well represented.

The three-year programme starts with a six-month rotation and course period, followed by a PhD project in one of the participating groups. Seminars and training courses complement the research work. Comprehensive support is provided throughout the programme. The programme language is English, and no tuitions apply.

10 competitive three-year fellowships (initially 1000 EUR, then 1300 EUR per month) are available. In addition, up to 10 students with self-provided funding may be selected as associates.

To Be a Good Candidate

Being competitive for a scholarship competition generally requires the same type of preparation asked of strong graduate school and job applicants. As a result, if you are laying a strong foundation for the career you intend to pursue, you will likely be a good candidate for scholarships in your field.

Start early! Many scholarships have application periods several months in advance of the actual award, and require extra preparation. Check out those lines below for further information on how to be a good scholarship candidate and maximize your chances of winning.

How to be a good candidate for scholarships?
Strive for excellence in challenging classes. Go beyond getting good grades.

Get to know people, especially professors, advisors, administrators, employers. These relationships provide opportunities for career and scholarship networking, mentoring relationships, and potential references for the future.

Get work, internship and volunteer experience in your field or in other fields of interest to you.

Expand your knowledge of the world, people, places and events in any way you can- by reading traveling, or participating in intercultural events, etc.

Get involved in interesting extra-curricular activities that are meaningful to you.

Seek out leadership positions within groups/activities that are important to you.

Keep up on the news, and read a variety of opinions. Learn to defend your views and and admit the strengths in others' arguments.
