The Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe’ in a Global Context: Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows” at the University of Heidelberg is offering:

2 PhD scholarships (2 + 1 years)
2 Post-doctoral scholarships (12 months)
within the Research Project C4 “Making India a Global Health Care Destination: A Social Study of High-Tech Hospitals and Neo-Oriental Spas”, Research Area C (Health and Environment).

The candidates are expected to develop PhD or Post-doctoral projects within the Project C4’s research focus: This project addresses the fast growing sector of medical and wellness tourism in India, and attempts to understand the ways by which India is promoted as a global health care destination. It examines the social and cultural encounters which prevail in such situations, and comprises four main, interrelated research axes:
1/ National and international marketing strategies as they pertain to marketing networks, cost, and the use of high-tech representations and neo-oriental images;
2/ Transformation of infrastructure and the use of ‘place’. How are ideas of culture combined, transformed, erased or emphasized according to various clinical settings and their location?;
3/ Issues of ‘cultural translation’ as they pertain to the explanation of therapeutic action, and to the translation of biomedical or Asian medical terminologies. Matters of language and communication strategies are explored. Emphasis is given to examining the means deployed to facilitate cultural understanding between patients and medical practitioners in these contexts;
4/ Globalization and the transformation of therapeutic practices. What impact does trans-national healthcare have on preexisting biomedical and other therapeutic practices in India? The analytic baseline is concerned with the flows and mutual shaping of ideas, images, techniques, objects and bodies; patterns of self-representation (practitioners and patients); cultural stereotypes; the cultural dimension of health economics and the transformation of India’s health care sector. Applicants for the PhD Scholarships are required to hold a Masters degree or equivalent for less than a year. Applicants for the post-doctoral scholarships are required to hold a PhD since no longer than three years. The fellowships are opened to scholars in anthropology, cultural geography and cultural economy. The subject can be explored from the perspectives developed in the social studies of medicine and/or in migration studies. The PhD projects should have their primary focus on biomedical tourism and biomedical health care. The Post-doctoral projects should cover either medical or wellness tourism.

Applicants are expected to have an excellent academic standing. They must be fluent in English, and have a good command of an Indian language. They are encouraged and expected to pursue independent research and will participate in the meeting of the research group, where we are developing a comparative theoretical and conceptual base for the project. Applications from women, ethnic minorities and individuals with disabilities are encouraged. The positions available are open to both EU and overseas students.

The PhD candidates are invited to use the research environment of the Heidelberg Cluster of Excellence and are entitled and encouraged to participate in the Graduate Program of the Cluster and the Research Group activities. The PhD projects will be supervised by the Project C4 Leader and the Coordinator of the Research Area C. The post-doctoral fellows will be based in Heidelberg, and are expected to participate in the activities of the Cluster and Research Group. They will be placed under the supervision of the Project C4 Leader and the Coordinator of the Research Area C.

The PhD candidates and the postdoctoral fellows are offered a monthly tax-free scholarship in accordance with the German academic standards (with supplements for children) and access to travel funds, technical equipment and institutional support. It is possible to apply for further financial help for language courses or similar. The PhD scholarships will be awarded for two years with a possible renewal for another year after successful evaluation. The Post-doctoral scholarship will be awarded for 12 months, non renewable.

The scholarships will start on 1st June 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Applicants are asked to submit a CV, copies of university degrees (scanned), two letters of recommendation (to be sent directly by their authors to the Project C4 Leader), and a project in English. The research project should not exceed 9 pages, including a 300 words abstract, a detailed project (5 pages), a critical bibliography, the insertion of the individual project in the larger programme, a calendar and the expected results for the duration of the project.

COP15 Climate Conference: Denmark skips gifts and educates youth in stead

The Danish Government has decided to establish a ‘COP15 Climate Scholarship’ for money saved pursuant to its policy of not giving gifts to participants at the Climate Conference in Copenhagen later this year.

At similar international conferences, participants usually receive gifts and so-called conference-kits with various items from the host country. At the COP15 in Copenhagen the number of participants is expected to reach 15.000. As part of its efforts to reduce the environmental and climate impact of the conference, the government has decided to discontinue the practice of giving gifts. The DKK 4 million (app. USD 700.000) hereby saved will instead be spent on climate scholarships allowing 10-12 candidates from all over the world to carry out 2-year climate related master’s programs at Danish universities.

“Our 0-gift policy and the COP15 Climate Scholarship are good signals to send at a conference which requires innovation in terms of the way we use our resources. Although there is no doubt as to the good intentions behind giving gifts, we have often experienced how conference kits end up in garbage bins at conference venues and hotels. We want break that habit in Copenhagen and spend the money in a constructive way”, says Minister for Development Cooperation, Ulla Tørnæs.

“The COP15 Climate Scholarship puts a spotlight on Denmark’s strong position in climate related research and the good possibilities for qualifying yourself at Danish universities. Besides, the scholarship is in line with the Government’s goal to increase the exchange of students across borders. With this scholarship, we hope to welcome a group of clever young people from all over the world who will become highly motivated to make a difference, and furthermore will get an exhaustive knowledge about Danish technology and research”, says Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Helge Sander.

UK Scholarships: Masters Studentship in History of Medicine 2009 2010

The School of Historical Studies at Newcastle University is pleased to advertise between 4 and 6 Masters Studentship Awards for postgraduate study in Newcastle’s Wellcome Trust recognised MA programme in the History of Medicine during the academic year 2009-10. The closing date for applications is 30 April 2009.

The stipends for these awards will be set as follows: Two studentships will be awarded at either £15,000 (including home/EU fees) for full-time home/EU students, or £20,000 (including international fees) for full-time non-EU students of outstanding merit; the other studentships will be awarded at either £5,000 (including home/EU-fees) for meritorious full-time home/EU students, or £10,000 (including international fees) for non-EU students. Part time studentships will be awarded to meritorious applicants at c. half the above rate per annum.

The studentships are funded by the Northern Centre for the History of Medicine and will be available as of September 2009. The Northern Centre is a partnership between the Universities of Newcastle and Durham, and is supported by the Wellcome Trust. Successful applicants will join the postgraduate community based at the School of Historical Studies at Newcastle University. Postgraduate teaching and research supervision in the History of Medicine at Newcastle is delivered by scholars with established international reputations in the field.

Eligibility: Applications for the studentship are invited from highly motivated
graduates from various backgrounds including the Humanities and Social Sciences (e.g. History, Classics, Philosophy, Literature, Religious Studies, Archaeology, Psychology, Sciences, Sociology etc.). Applicants require a good (or predicted) undergraduate degree result (1st or high 2:1) in such a subject. Candidates with a medical background are also strongly encouraged to apply, and the studentship is open to current stage 4 Newcastle medical students who have opted to take the MA in the History of Medicine as an intercalated degree after stage 4 MBBS. Applications from overseas candidates with equivalent qualifications are also very welcome.

University of Sheffield Studentships: Up to 60 University Studentships available for entry in 2009-10

The University of Sheffield, one of the top-ranked research-led universities in the UK is pleased to announce a major investment in the development of our postgraduate community. 60 University Studentships are available to students wishing to undertake postgraduate study in any Faculty of the University. The Studentships will provide tuition fees at the UK/EU rate, a maintenance grant of either £6,645 or £13,290 per annum, and a Research Training Support Grant.

Studentships are available as follows:

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

OFID (The OPEC Fund for International Development) is pleased to announce that qualified undergraduate students are welcome to apply for the OFID Scholarship 2009/10. The OFID Scholarship will be awarded to support an undergraduate student from any developing country, to pursue higher education in a relevant field of development, in any recognized university/college in the world. Through its scholarship scheme, OFID aims to help highly motivated, highly driven individuals overcome one of the biggest challenges to their careers – the cost of advanced professional or graduate training. The winner of the OFID Award will receive a scholarship of up to US$100,000 The funds will be spread over a maximum of two years, toward the completion of a Master’s degree, or its equivalent, at an accredited educational institution, starting in the autumn of the academic year 2009/10.

Eligibility
To be eligible the candidate must meet ALL of the following criteria: :

Must be between the ages of 23-32 at the time of submitting his/her application.
Must be a graduating student with a Baccalaureate from a four-year, accredited college/university, or its equivalent.
Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 rating system, or its equivalent.
Must be matriculated at an accredited university for the upcoming academic year starting September 2009, and must maintain full-time status for the duration of the Masters Degree.
Must be a national of a developing country (please see list of eligible countries)
Must select a subject of study that pertains to OFID’s core mission, such as: economics of development (poverty reduction, energy and sustainable development), environment (desertification), or other related science and technology fields.

Disbursement of the Scholarship Fund
The terms and conditions of payment will be determined in coordination with the student upon his/her selection in accordance with the following guidelines:

The tuition fees, including any supplementary examination fees, as may be required by the academic institution, will be paid by OFID directly to the academic institution. Health insurance will be paid in accordance with the institution’s own standard medical scheme.
A monthly allowance to cover living expenses, books and accommodation, will be transferred to the student’s own personal bank account on a quarterly basis.
Prior to the start of his/her first year studies, the student will be paid a relocation grant, equal to two-month allowance. OFID will also pay for travel costs from the nearest airport to the student’s place of residence, to the nearest airport to the chosen place of study. Upon completion of the studies, the student will be paid the cost of one-way air ticket to his/her home country.

A scanned letter of acceptance from your chosen educational institution, confirming your admission, subject of study and duration of the Master’s degree program (must not exceed a maximum of two years).

Preference will be given to those who have not yet had the opportunity to study in the UK and NL.

Each scholarship will cover tuition, accommodation, maintenance cost and a return airfare for the scholarship holder only.

ASQ Rochester Section promotes the application of quality concepts and methodology in all professional fields through a college scholarship program. Students who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to complete and submit an application. Up to four (4) $1000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Selection of award recipients will be made by the ASQ Rochester Section Scholarship Committee based on the content of application materials and, if necessary, personal interviews. The Committee may decide to award all, some, or none of the available scholarship funds. In all cases, the decision of the Committee is final.

The awards will be presented at a lunch-time recognition ceremony at the ASQ Rochester Section Annual Conference in March. Your school will also be notified of this honor.

ELIGIBILITY:
To be eligible to be considered for an award, applicants must meet all of the following qualifications:

Be a full-time undergraduate at an accredited college or university in the United States. The school must be a not-for-profit institution.
Be in the Sophomore or Junior year of studies.
Have a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent on a different scale).
Be a child of a member of ASQ Rochester Section, or be a permanent resident of Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, or Wyoming Counties of New York State.
Submit all required application materials by January 18, 2009.

APPLICATION MATERIALS:
Applicants for a scholarship award must submit the following information to the ASQ Rochester Section Scholarship Committee:

An official transcript showing grades for the entire enrollment in the current school and prior college(s), if any.
One letter of recommendation that addresses the applicant’s character and ability. This must be from a professor or official from the applicant’s current school, or from a current or recent employer.

Topic:

Pathway-based tumour characterisation by alignment against cell panels along multiple molecular dimensions.

Research:

Astra Zeneca Oncology has constructed large cell panels to serve as in vitro models for drug response. These cell panels have been extensively characterized by mutation analysis, mRNA expression, aCGH, response to a wide variety of drugs, micro-RNA expression and phosphoprotein characterization. In parallel, the same measurements are being performed on a collection of colorectal samples. In this project two aims are pursued. First, a comparative analysis will be performed between the cell line data and the tumor data to determine the multi-dimensional molecular states spanned by the cell lines and whether these states faithfully recapitulate the space spanned by a representative and clinically relevant selection of tumor samples. Guided by this mapping and by following a pathway-based approach, integrative modeling will be applied on the cell line panel data to construct models predictive of resistance.

Job description:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the bio-informatics analysis of the cell line and tissue data. More specifically, these tasks include:
1) constructing a comprehensive gene list of the PI3K and ERK network;
2) Molecular characterisation of the colorectal cell panel and tumour samples through integrative analysis of the various data sources within the space spanned by the identified network genes and
3) Pathway-based alignment of cell panel to tumours to determine the extent to which the cell panel recapitulates the heterogeneity in the tissue set.

Location:

The position is embedded within the Bioinformatics and statistics group lead by Dr Lodewyk Wessels (http://bioinformatics.nki.nl) at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam and the Oncology Informatics group, Discovery Medicine, Astra Zeneca, Alderley Park, UK lead by Dr Tim French. We plan to have regular meetings, and the postdoc will also spend time at both
locations.

Requirements:

Candidates should fulfill the following criteria.
- MSc or PhD in one of the following areas: bioinformatics, engineering, computer science, statistics, physics, biotechnology, or biology.
- Knowledge of fundamental aspects of cancer biology, especially signalling pathways.
- Knowledge of fundamental aspects of computer science (algorithms and data structures, programming languages).
- Knowledge or experience of informatics.
- Knowledge of statistics, artificial intelligence or bioinformatics is highly desirable.

Conditions of Employment:

The successful candidate will be employed by the Netherlands Cancer Institute. The employment conditions follow general employment rules as laid down in the 'CAO' for hospitals. The salary will be determined depending on education and experience.

Fudan University Detailed Implementation of the 2009 “Chinese Government Special Scholarship - Postgraduate Program”

In order to increase the cooperation and understanding between the people of China and other countries, develop outstanding international talent and improve the perception of China’s higher education, under the mandate of the Department of Education, Fudan University is opening application for full-time postgraduate studies under the 2009 Chinese government scholarship program.

In order to facilitate the implementation of the Chinese Government Scholarship, the following detailed implementation has been issued in accordance with the “Chinese Government Scholarship Application Method”

I. Scholarship scope and distribution

1. The Scholarship is aimed at assisting Master’s and Doctorate candidate students who apply for Fudan University in 2009.

2. 30 Scholarships are available for 2009.

3. Scholarship scope:

- Students are exempt from registration fees, tuition, laboratory fees, internship fees, study materials and accommodation costs;

V. Application time and approval process

2. After inspection and comment, the departments will return the materials to the Foreign Students Office within the allocated time.

3. The final results will be made by the Review Committee of Fudan University for International Students Scholarships. Fudan University will report the results to the Chinese Government Scholarships Council for approval.

4. Fudan University will send the admission notice and Visa Application Form (JW201) to the successful applicants right after the results are approved by the Chinese Government Scholarships Council

VI. Scholarship recipients must go to Fudan University to register on the date stipulated by the university. Students who have not received permission and arrive late for this process will have their Scholarship status automatically cancelled.

SINGAPORE SCHOLARSHIP INVITATION FOR APPLICATIONS ACADEMIC YEAR 2009/2010

The Singapore Government awards the scholarship to Government-endorsed students from the other member countries of the ASEAN. Each Scholarship is for a full-time undergraduate degree course at the Nanyang Technological University, the National University of Singapore and the Singapore Management University. All disciplines except for Medicine and Dentistry are open to Scholars. The duration of each scholarships is for three or four years, depending on the discipline.
The award based on academic merit and places will allocated by open competition. If necessary, a one-year bridging or foundation programme, in addition to the undergraduate studies, will be provided.

To be eligible, a candidate must:

* Be a citizen in an ASEAN country (Except Singapore)
* Possess excellent academic records; and
* Have a good command of English

Candidates must meet the entry requirements for Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, and Singapore Management University. A recipient of the Scholarship may not concurrently hold any other Scholarship, Fellowship, Grant or Award without prior approval of the Singapore Government. The Scholars are also expected to return to their countries upon graduation to contribute to the development of their countries.

The scholarship will cover tuition fees for the duration of the award, a living allowance of S$4,300 per annum, an accommodation allowance based on the different room rates at each university and one return economy class air ticket passage from his/her home country to Singapore for the duration of studies.

The Ph.D. Program in Urban and Public Affairs at the University of Louisville offers a number of Fellowships and Research Assistantships each year to new students. Applications are now being accepted for students who intend to begin study during the Fall Semester 2009. Both Fellowships and Research Assistantships offer annual stipends of US$19,000 plus tuition remission, health insurance, office space, and computer and IT support. Research assistants are required to work for 20 hours per week for a supervisor who is a member of the faculty of the Ph.D. Program, while fellows are exempt from that requirement for the first two years of study. Support is available for up to four years.

MEDAN - Institut Agama Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara (IAIN SU) menerima 25 orang Calon Pegawai Negeri Sipil (CPNS) formasi 2008. Pendaftaran mulai 19 sampai 20 November di Kampus Jalan Willem Iskandar Medan pada hari kerja.

Hal itu disampaikan Kepala Biro AUAK IAIN SU sekaligus Ketua Panitia penerimaan CPNS 2008 Dra. Hj. Salmawati Hasibuan kepada wartawan di Medan, Senin (10/11).

Menurut Salmawati, dari 19 orang dari 25 CPNS untuk calon dosen. Selebihnya sebagai tenaga administrasi. Jenis ketenagaan calon dosen yang dibutuhkan seluruhnya lulusan program S-2 (Golongan III/b) yaitu Balaghah (S2 Bahasa Arab/Sastra Arab), Bimbingan dan Konseling Karir (Bimbingan dan Konseling), Ekonomi dan Perbankan Islam (Ekonomi Islam/Perbankan Islam), Filsafat Ilmu (Filsafat), Filsafat Politik Islam (Filsafat Islam), Hukum Acara Perdata (Hukum/Ilmu Hukum), Hukum Asuransi (Hukum/Ilmu Hukum), Hukum Bisnis (Hukum/Ilmu Hukum), Hukum Dagang (Hukum/Ilmu Hukum), Hukum Internasional (Hukum Ilmu Hukum), Hukum Perdata (Hukum Ilmu Hukum), Hukum Tata Negara (Hukum Tata Negara), Ilmu Ekonomi (Makro&Mikro (Ekonomi), Ilmu Falak (Hukum Islam), Ilmu Perundang-undangan (Hukum/Ilmu Hukum), Keadvokatan (Hukum/Ilmu Hukum), Komunikasi dan Penyiaran Islam (Komunikasi dan Penyiaran Islam), dan Konseling Lintas Budaya (Bimbingan Konseling).

Sedangkan untuk calon tenaga administrasi seluruhnya lulusan S1 (Golongan III/a), Pranata Komputer (S1 Teknik Informatika/Komputer), Perencana (Ekonomi/Perencana Pembangunan), Pengadministrasian Jabatan Fungsional (Administrasi Negara/Hukum/Sospol/Ekonomi/Keagamaan Islam), Verifikatur Keuangan (Akuntansi), Penyusun Rencana Pengadaan Perlengkapan (Administrasi Negara/Komputer), dan Penata Laporan Keuangan (Akuntansi).

Salmawati menjelaskan, syarat utama pelamar adalah Warga Negara Indonesia (WNI) dan beragama Islam. Calon dosen boleh berasal dari seluruh Indonesia , sedangkan calon tenaga administrasi dari Sumatera Utara. Syarat lain hubungi panitia.

PhD position on isotopomer studies of plant-climate interactions, Department of Medical
Biochemistry and Biophysics, Umeå University, Sweden

Little is known on interactions between plants and atmospheric and climate change on
time scales of centuries. The goal of the project is to deduce separate climate and
physiological signals from tree rings, to be able to detect these interactions. We have
developed an approach to measure isotopomer abundances (i.e. the intramolecular
distributions of stable isotopes in metabolites), by NMR spectroscopy. Isotopomers turn
isotope abundances into multiple information channels, as basis for parallel reconstruction
of climate and physiological signals.

The PhD project will focus on the deuterium isotope,
applied to tree ring series and material from annual plants. The research environment
includes chemists, earth scientists, and forest ecology.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a master’s degree in chemistry, earth sciences or a
related field. We seek a person who is highly motivated to combine methodology from
several fields. Key qualifications for this position include experience in handling
environmental samples and familiarity with isotope concepts; experience in NMR
spectroscopy is a merit.

The PhD project can start immediately or upon agreement. Applications should include
CV, a short statement of motivation, copies of master’s degree and thesis, and names and
addresses of three persons willing to act as references.

Cranfield School of Management - one of Europe’s top management schools - is offering this PhD studentship within its International Centre for Programme Management, a world-leading hub for research into this important emerging discipline. The studentship is tenable for four years from October 2008

The repeated failure of major projects in the public and private sectors has been linked with the setting and sustaining of over-optimistic expectations by stakeholders. This PhD study will explore the phenomenon of false optimism in projects - its nature and its causes. We envisage that the findings of the study will have significant theoretical and practical implications.

Applications are invited from exceptionally qualified candidates for this fully funded full-time studentship under the supervision of Dr Elmar Kutsch. Applicants should have a good first degree in a relevant discipline. Ideally, we are seeking an individual with a background in social psychology. Experience of working on projects is desirable, although not essential. An MBA or relevant specialist masters degree would be an advantage.
