Devendra Banhart has some cosmic fun with guest stars Wu-Tang’s GZA, the Strokes’ Fabrizio Moretti and MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden in his new video for “Baby,” which appears on his 2009 release What Will We Be. Banhart even tidied up his facial hair for the video! Looking good, Devendra!

Directed by Ron Winter, the “Baby” video is a pretty kooky affair – but in a good way. And very entertaining! The song is also Banhart’s most pop-ish, which adds to the fun vibe going on throughout the video. Yes, things get, how shall we say… unusual… around the 1:20 mark, but it’s totally worth checking out.

Pick of the week: Over a decade in music and The Dave Matthews Band still has what it takes to make a hit album. The band’s most recent release, entitled Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King was created in honor of original band member saxophonist LeRoi Moore. Moore died on August 19, 2009 following complications from a ATV accident. The band seems to grow with their fans. They are still as popular as they were when they started back in 91′.

Kings Of Leon Announce Dates For Summer Tour

Kings of Leon are heading back on the road this summer for a 31-city tour of North America, continuing to support their fourth and most recent album, Only By the Night, which elevated the band to mainstream success and helped the Followill boys win a bunch of Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Best Rock Song. The tour gets under way in Atlantic City on June 5; they will also appear at Bonnaroo on June 11.

The band also just released a new app for the iPhone and iPod Touch; Kings of Leon Revenge features 10 of the band’s biggest hits. The game, part of Tapulous’s Tap Tap Revenege series, sells for $4.99. Accompanying the game is a Bluetooth-based Battles Mode where players wirelessly challenge friends to a point-by-point battle for bragging rights on who’s the ultimate Kings of Leon fan. Sony Makes New Deal With Michael Jackson’s Estate

Because you can really only wait so long after an artist is dead before raiding their vaults for hastily-assembled and usually quality-depraved posthumous releases, Reuters is reporting that Sony Music has recently inked a $250 million deal consisting of ten albums worth of Michael Jackson’s catalog and unreleased music.

Jackson’s death on June 25, 2009, provided a major stimulus for Sony, with the label selling 28 million copies of the King of Pop’s records following his passing. Translation? Posthumous releases were as inevitable as Joe Jackson taking time out from mourning to mention his really, really super fantastic new record label.

The deal, which extends Jackson’s 30-year partnership with Sony into 2017, will launch its first salvo of releases this November. Because honestly, the man only has like twelve different best-of compilations out there, when his fans deserve at least a good 19 to 20, along with collections of ‘alternate versions’ that feature different snare drums. It’s only fair, people.

In other news, having reviewed this interesting “Thriller” music video from a few years back, modern studio heads are looking into the dark arts of voodoo and black magic in an effort to bring MJ back for an all-star concert film about zombies, ‘cause the kids are really into that right now. In 3D!

Iggy Pop Invades The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions tend to be fairly staid, meaningless affairs – unless Springsteen’s giving a speech, because he’s the Boss – comprised solely of industry backslapping, lackluster all-star jams, and generous amounts of ego massages for over-the-hill rock and rollers.

Last night’s induction and awards dinner at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City would have been of the same, with bands like ABBA and Genesis (and no, Peter Gabriel was not there) getting inducted along with such deserving and underrated acts as Jimmy Cliff and the Hollies, had it not been for the inclusion of rock ‘n roll’s greatest losers – The Stooges. Specifically, The Idiot himself, Iggy Pop.

Accepting his award, the wide-eyed frontman (seemingly comprised only of leather and sinew) muttered “this thing is… heavy” before shouting “Well, roll over, Woodstock!” and giving both middle fingers to the tux-filled crowd, according to the L.A. Times.

Backstage, in lieu of offering any memorabilia to the Hall of Fame’s museum, Pop offered this choice nugget: “I told them where to buy all the stuff I sold for drugs in the ’70s.”

Finally, the perpetually shirtless singer led his fellow Stooges (Scott Asheton and James Williamson) through the classic stompers “Search and Destroy” and “I Wanna Be Your Dog” while howling to the buttoned-down crowd, “come on, you’re not too rich to be cool!” before being joined onstage by Eddie Vedder and the forever, forever uncool Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. Hey, they can’t all be winners.

Paula Abdul To Host New Star Search

Paula Abdul is trying to take two steps forward, after moving two steps back. Everyone knew the designated “nice” judge from the hit television series American Idol, who was known for her “coo-coo” moments as well as her sweetness, couldn’t stay away too long.

She’s got a new gig, but it’s on an old show.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the queen of drama and most entertaining member of the “Idol” judges, (Simon was the mean guy, that’s it, and Randy was the one that said “dog” a lot) is in talks to headline an updated version of Star Search. Isn’t it ironic?

There had been a lot of talk regarding Abdul’s future since the one time pop artist and Laker girl left the Fox reality series. There was even a rumor that she would be joining Dancing with the Stars, but that never happened. There was also that strange rumor that she would join Simon Cowell as a judge on the forthcoming US version of his UK monster hit, The X Factor, which is slated to debut on Fox in the fall of 2011.

Paula is the new face of the new Star Search, and Ed McMahon is probably rolling over in his grave.

Eddy Grant Accuses Gorillaz Of Stealing His Song

Eddy Grant is pissed off. The reggae star who owned the ’80s is about to go “electric avenue’ upside Gorillaz co-creator Damon Albarn’s head; Grant is accusing Gorillaz/Albarn of ripping off the music from his dance classic, “Time Warp,” for their latest single, “Stylo,” featured on their new album Plastic Beach.

Grant, 62, believes the cartoon band are guilty of copyright infringement, calling their single a “blatant rip-off.” Grant is getting his legal team involved as well, declaring to “take it to God, let alone the courts.”

Speaking with NME, Grant said that, “Damon Albarn knows in his heart of hearts – it’s unfortunate that we cant get into people’s hearts – he knows that this is a song that he’s loved, in his club days…I don’t know the guy…but he knows this is a song he loves.”

EMI Publishing, which represents both acts, said it was “a private matter between Eddy Grant and Gorillaz.”

To get a bit more specific (noted by music radar), Grant feels Albarn and co-Gorillaz creator Jamie Hewlett ripped off the keyboard section of Grant’s “Time Warp” as the foundation of their song “Stylo.”

Via drowned in sound, here’s what Guyana-born Grant had to say in a rather pointed e-mail sent around this morning:

“I am outraged that the Gorillaz have infringed the copyright of my song ‘Time Warp’ claiming their song ‘Stylo’ to be an original composition.”
“My song sits almost note to note with their release and is a blatant rip off. “Time Warp” is a very popular song and has been a staple of the DJ scene for many years and I feel total disrespect from Gorilliaz [sic] and their management company, especially as they are an established act.
“I am very angry that this was not picked up by our mutual publisher EMI’s administration division. I do not blame my publishers but, the state of the industry at the current time with all labels and publishers folding into one and becoming incestuous.
“It’s such an obvious copy that from day one the band and their management should have taken control of this situation with EMI Publishing. I would like the outcome to be that the band admits that they have lifted my song, that I have a full credit for the song and an apology from the band.”

MOG Debuts Mobile Music App For iPhone, Android

Music streaming service MOG lifted the curtain at SXSW Monday for its mobile music apps, an all-you-can-download subscription service for users of Apple iPhones and Android smartphones. The MOG apps will provide subscribers access to all 7 million-plus tracks on the service; users can listen to MOG Radio channels, music on-demand and download tunes.

The mobile version of MOG will cost $10 a month for unlimited on-demand music. The service should be available in the U.S. by mid-year.

“If you are a music fan spending 10 bucks a month on music and you don’t switch to this you are insane,” said David Hyman, MOG’s chief executive, during a service demo at SXSW.

Back in December MOG launched MOG All Access, the $5 a month digital music service with access to 7 million songs; the service features a social-networking angle with a variety of music discovery and sharing tools, plus the opportunity to check out news and reviews, playlists and lyrics.

Subscribers can log in to their account from any browser to access the above-mentioned six million songs via licensing partnerships with four major music labels – Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Music.

“Music has to be portable,” said Hyman, who added that a music service without a mobile option is like “being told you can’t take a book out of your house to read it.”

The Berkeley, Calif.-based MOG, launched by Hyman in 2005, recently landed a new round of cash, PaidContent reported; the amount is said to be $10 million, led by Menlo Ventures and Balderton Capital.

Lady Gaga Announces Tour Of North America

Prepare for the Summer of Gaga. Lady Gaga has announced details for her first, no-holds barred arena tour of North America. The Monster Ball tour madness begins June 28 in Montreal, zigzags across the U.S. and Canada and finally wraps up the 31-date extravaganza in Raleigh, North Carolina on September 19.

Lady Gaga has described her Monsters Ball tour, currently wreaking havoc across Europe, as “the first-ever pop-electro opera.” According to a press release, Gaga plans to make the upcomin g is new, leg of the tour “even more eye-popping” than the first.

So… get ready.

Live Nation’s global touring CEO Arthur Fogel said in a statement:

“Lady Gaga has set out to revolutionize pop music and with her new production she continues to do exactly that. We’re thrilled to take the Monster Ball to fans around the world.”

Ms. Gaga just released her nine-minute long video for “Telephone.” The video, which Lady Gaga has noted was inspired by Quentin Tarantino, features Beyonce breaking Lady Gaga out of a women’s prison, some girl-on-girl action and a sexy dance sequence. It’s pretty much exactly what you might expect from a Lady Gaga music video.

Birds Jumping On Guitars In London – An Epic Event?

In one of those sometimes-the-news-is-more-odd than funny stories, French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has created an art installation in The Curve, Barbican, London, in which 40 zebra finches fly within an aviary lined with electric guitars and other instruments. Whenever a bird lands on the instrument, it makes a noise. People then go to see the birds make these noises, and this singular event becomes a nationwide phenomenon.

Vincent Van Gogh, whose exhibition at the Royal Academy, according to the U.K.’s Times Online, garnered far fewer visitors by comparison, has decided to shoot himself once again over being ignored for a far sunnier mainstream project. The sound of the birds hopping on the guitars somewhat resembles the sound of a band tuning up before a live performance.

While the birds can’t actually produce songs, they can reproduce the pre-concert sound you hear when waiting in line at the bathroom, or the concession stand, or realizing that some jerk in an Affliction shirt is sitting in your seat, even though your ticket clearly states that this is your row, and now you’re stuck standing in the aisle wishing you had gone to that dumb bird thing instead like your had girlfriend suggested!

U.K.’s Music Downloads Outperforming CD Sales

Reuters is reporting that 2009 marked the first time in the United Kingdom that the growth of legal digital music revenues both outperformed and overcompensated for the continuing nosedive performance of declining CD/ DVD sales, according to PRS for Music, a music royalty distribution group.

PRS states that it’s still too early to consider this “a turning point” for the flailing industry, which has been in steady decline in both the U.S. and the U.K. over the past decade. This is thanks to the availability of free music online, Oasis continuing to release really bad records, and the general douche quotient of Lars Ulrich.

While industry hotshots remain cautious, PRS chief executive does state that “the next decade does, however, promise further growth in earnings from the legal digital market as well as the use of British music overseas.”

The 2009 spike in digital revenues (which ran at about $944.8 million, or 623 million pounds in British sillyspeak) is attributed to a 19% increase in British music being used abroad.

To continue this upward trend, the entirety of the British music industry is expected to send a really, really nice fruit and goodies basket (with muffins and everything) to Paul McCartney on Monday, with a note about how it would be “jolly good dandy” if they could kinda sorta actually release a Beatles song or two online now, because the whole relying on Susan Boyle thing’s really getting out of hand.

Watch: Julian Casablancas In New SNL Digital Short

Mr. Strokes himself, Julian Casablancas, made a nice, surprise cameo on Saturday Night Live over the weekend, co-starring in an SNL Digital Short with funnyman Andy Samberg.

The digital short/music video is for the funky and funny Lonely Island song, “Boombox,” which features Casablancas on guest vocals and can be found on their debut album, Incredibad, released last year.

Look for a new Strokes album in September, plus an appearances at Lollapalooza. The Lonely Island guys are the before-mentioned Mr. Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer.
