Weston's Senior Portraits - DSA Class of 2018

We have been friends with Weston's family for more than a decade and neighbors for years in Summit County. I have photographed in a number of times over the years, but it's always so exciting to take high school senior portraits of someone you have known since they were little! (Sorry Weston!) Weston is an amazing musician and making a name for himself - he attend DSA - Denver School of the Arts and I can't wait to see what is in store for him in coming years!

I took his sister Stef's senior portraits a few years ago and am honored to get called back for the job with a completely different backdrop - this time downtown Denver and Red Rocks! Too bad they don't have more cute kiddos to photograph!

Eco-Cycle Zero Waste Events

This summer I have been doing some photography work with Eco-Cycle, a great Boulder non-profit organization who has been recycling in Colorado for 40 years. I have had the opportunity to photograph several events and I truly support their mission and am so proud to live in a community with great folks like these! Their Fix-It-Clinics are amazing - helping folks fix their own items and keeping them out of the landfill. The dazzling duo of Jeff and Paige create amazing concerts that focus on environmental education for kids and are delightful for children and adults! These were images from a Zero Waste concert they performed in Lyons, Colorado this summer - as you can tell, fun was had by all.

Breckenridge Luxury Condo for Rent

I had the opportunity to photograph this beautiful condo at One Ski Hill Place for rent through 5 Diamond Lodging. A gorgeous 2 bedroom 2 bathroom unit with all the upgrades and a deck almost as large as the condo itself! And a perfect location at the base of Peak 7 at Breckenridge Ski Area. Ahhhh perfection!

Chenoa and Eli chose to have their senior portraits taken together at the same time and it was so fun! Both graduated from Summit High School in Frisco and we took the photos at Keystone Resort. I love fun senior portrait shoots and students are willing to have some laughs with me! It always makes the photos better! Even if the more serious portraits are their favorites, I think their true personality comes out while having fun!

I photographed Abby's senior portraits at Keystone River Run - the same place we took her sister's senior portraits two years ago! I hope I get to photograph their younger brother's photos also next year! What a beautiful family! And I have known Abbey since she was born and my kids went to daycare with Abbey so it's so fun to see them grow and change! Although occasionally I catch myself doing Mom sort of things on the shoots with kids I know so well - like trying to fix stray hairs or telling them what to do! Oops!

Congratulations Abbey! Excited to hear about your next adventures!Summer is always the best time for senior portraits - once school starts in the fall students and photographers are so busy - I always recommend getting them done before the school year starts!

This beautiful home is just going on the market outside Keystone this week. A luxury Summit Cove home near Summit Cove Elementary School that backs up to the national forest with miles of hiking and biking trails. Offered by Kelly Lloyd Real Estate. It was so much fun to photograph - especially at this time of the year!

Colorado Association for Recycling

As official photographer for this year's annual summit for the Colorado Association for Recycling I get to wear a few hats and combine two careers. My first career as an environmental engineer where I specialized in waste management and sustainability and my second career as a professional photographer. I loved hearing all of the talks and rubbing elbows with all these great environmentalists doing the right thing in Colorado!

This year's event was held in Fort Collins at the Marriott and the Awards Dinner at the Rio Grande. A great time was had by all as you can tell by the photos!

Eco-Cycle celebrates 40 years!

I was honored to photograph the 40th anniversary of Eco-Cycle, Boulder's non-profit recycling and sustainability organization. Lots of great folks doing the right thing and trying to keep waste out of the landfills and our planet safe! I worked in the environmental engineering field with many of these folks back in the 1980's and 1990's and it was wonderful to all reconnect and celebrate their accomplishments!

Copper Mountain Senior Portraits

Today is opening day at Copper Mountain for the 2016 season - a perfect day to post these fun senior portraits! Max, Roland and Aidan wanted to take their senior portraits at Copper Mountain even though it was October and there was no snow. Doing the portraits together was both economical and more fun - the weather was iffy and we had thoughts of canceling, but the date worked and we were all in Summit County for the weekend. Thanks to Emily of Keeping Composure Photography for being my great assistant! And to the boys for being so easy going and photogenic!

I photographed Emily and Geoff's wedding in 2008 at Black Mountain Lodge at Arapahoe Basin - the very first wedding to be held at Black Mountain Lodge! I was honored to be chosen to photograph them as a family of four when baby brother was born in October! Summit County - what an absolutely beautiful place to grow up!

The Wallis Family came all the way from Texas for vacation and their family holiday photos. We chose Old Town Reservoir for their portraits near the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center. It was very sunny so a lot of squinting! We had a couple cheesy smiles and crabby moments, but overall the kids were troopers to endure my many poses and requests for different backdrops!

Each year I try to assess my favorite photos of the year, which can be difficult for us professional photographers. Sometimes my favorites are personal photos, travel photos, family photos and clients' photos. This years was no different, just a combination of a variety of images from 2015! I was lucky enough to get to Tulum, Mexico, shot a wedding Lake Tahoe, and had lots of other ventures around the US! I learned to do High Dynamic Range editing in Photoshop and have been quite pleased with the results! Happy New Year and Peace to all in 2016!

Ben had his senior portraits taken in downtown Golden - a beautiful fall location! There are so many great locations within just a few blocks - mountains, river, old historic buildings and downtown Golden. The fall colors were perfect and Ben was willing to do all my crazy ideas - he even went for a little "stroll" in the icy cold water! I've known Ben's momma for about 30 years so I love watching kiddos grow up and become adults. You've grown into a wonderful young man Ben - best of luck at college next year!

Summit High School Senior Portraits - A Giveaway!

Summit High School Class of 2016 - we are starting out the senior portrait season early this year. Your senior portraits are due to the Frisco office on October 7th, 2015 and it's always hard to get these scheduled. There is almost no time once school starts in the fall, because students are busy and the days get shorter and colder so weekdays can be hard to schedule. We are already booked with weddings and portraits many September weekends, so I recommend booking early!

Boulder Baby Photographer - Welcome to the world Baby Myla!

Baby Myla had her newborn portraits at just two weeks old! She was perfect... except for one little pee on her Dad's lap. But that's what happens when you take a newborn's diaper off! The photos are usually better without the diapers, but it can be a risk!

Last week I had the pleasure of photographing Baby Wyatt at just 8 days old! I love going to parents' homes to photograph newborns - Wyatt even got a little ride on the ATV at the end of the shoot! Another Successful Tubbs Romp to Stomp out Breast Cancer!

I have been photographing the Tubbs Romp to Stomp since 2008. I missed a couple years and one year I photographed both the Utah Romp and the Colorado Romp. Some years it is snowy and cold, and some years it is sunny and clear like this year. But they all have been a great experience! Over 2,000 snowshoers having fun for a great cause - raising money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. And the outfits are absolutely beautiful - and the smiles!

Good Samaritan Benny in Salem, Oregon

I attended a newborn photography workshop in Salem, Oregon last fall with Robin Long Photography which was an amazing few days with a group of amazing women in Robin's beautiful natural light studio. I had the most beautiful surprise the night I pulled into Salem and checked into my hotel. It was evening and I needed dinner, so I just stopped at the Fred Meyer store down the street from my hotel and got the fastest hotel food from the deli - a mac and cheese to heat up in the microwave in the room. Not very healthy but fast and easy.

When I returned to my room, and opened up the mac and cheese packet, I was surprised to find a crisp $100 bill in between the cardboard and the plastic cover. Of course I thought it was fake, but then I looked closer, and then googled it and learned that there's a good person who leaves these bills in food at grocery stores and Walmart stores in South Salem and signs them "Benny." Once I read a few of the stories on the Today Show and Oprah, I realized that they were meant for folks that really need the money so I joined the ranks of paying it forward and forwarded it to a friend that was struggling paying for groceries for her children. Another favorite summary is in this article from the Statesman Journal that they track where the bills have been found and how they have helped folks!

The whole experience just made my day and made me realize what a beautiful community I had just arrived in! It still makes me smile when I think about "Benny" and there are lots of great stories about how "Benny" has changed lives in Salem and around the country. What a difference just one person can make on many many lives! Thank You Benny! Or as Oprah say... "Be Benny!"

Each year I try to do a summary of my favorite photos of the year... but it is always a challenge to question my art and my opinions and why I like some photos better than others. This year brings a new class of photos - my iPhone photos! Often I take them in a square format, to share on Instagram, and use some filters and frames so they look a bit different than the other photos. 2014 brought on some new challenges both personally and professionally, but I got a lot of travel time in and even did some portraits along the way! I saw so many new places in 2014 and had so much fun photographing them that I have another whole post on Travel below!

Favorite 2014 Travel and Nature photos

Personally one of those most meaningful encounters I had in 2014 was meeting and photographing a group of traveling Tibetan Monks in Boulder and Denver. They are visiting the US and Canada during 2014 and 2015 from the Gaden Shartse Dokhang Monastary and are traveling to share their culture, practices and paths to inner peace and compassion. One of the monks still emails and is a Facebook friend. I jump up and down every time I receive an email from LG! And so of course my favorite photos of the year involve monks and especially kids and monks!

As a baby photographer I had the opportunity to photograph many sets of twins this year - some were easier than others, some were younger or older, but it's hard enough to photograph one baby, and that much harder to photograph two! But I love these opportunities, we just have to schedule more time for the sessions!

but this is my all-time favorite - a Boulder County morning at ten degrees below zero about 6:50am just a mile from our house... but amazingly beautiful and peaceful!

The year 2014 was an amazing year of ups and downs, breaths in and out, gains and losses, and some really difficult personal times. But through everything I have learned a whole lot more about life and believe even more that we must be present in every moment and accept every human being as ourselves. Our equals - we are one. This I truly believe.

Oregon Family Portraits - The Smith Family Moves to Oregon!

I have photographed this little family since the birth of their twin boys three years ago, and they have always been great subjects! I was sad to see that they were moving from Colorado to Oregon, but when I scheduled a PureBaby Newborn Workshop in Salem, Oregon, I was just down the street from their new home! One friend said, "I didn't know that Beaton Photography did house calls!" Maybe that will be our new tagline! And their backyard was perfect for these photos!

and one of my favorite photos of all time... when the twins were one and Lily was three - the twins weren't having anything to do with this photographer! Although I know the photo makes it look like Lily is the culprit - she was honestly just trying to be sweet and comfort them!

and another fun story from Salem - my first few hours in town I stopped at the grocery store and I got a hundred dollar bill from the good samaritan Benny! Boulder Baby Photographer - Meet Newborn Baby Mabel!
