Intervention: Season 11 is a reality show detailing the lives of those battling addiction, who are ultimately surprised with interventions by their loved ones. The interventions are also conducted by one of the show’s intervention specialists.

True Crime with Aphrodite Jones – “Anna Nicole Smith: Tragedy on Trial” is an in-depth look at the life and death of Anna Nicole Smith, including her drug addiction. Aphrodite Jones considers the possibilities of Anna Nicole’s death being a murder, suicide, or accident.

Turning Point – “Dogwood Restaurant” is a show detailing how Galen and Bridget Sampson open an apprenticeship program at the Dogwood Restaurant in Baltimore in order to help those struggling to regain power in their lives.

Vanguard – “Sex, Lies, and Cigarettes” is a documentary following Christof Putzel as he attends the 2010 World Tobacco Conference incognito in order to hear what employees of tobacco companies have to say.

Bobby Fischer Against the World is a documentary about the life of Bobby Fischer, the American chess Grandmaster who had a troubled childhood, was known as a Cold War icon, and led life as a fugitive on the run. He also suffered from depression.

E: 60 – “Scott Hall: The Wrestler” is a documentary on the demise of Scott Hall, one of professional wrestling’s biggest names due, in large part, to addiction and substance use.

Hoarders: Season 4 is a reality program chronicling the lives of people whose addictions to their belongings have them on the verge of crises.

Our America with Lisa Ling – “Invisible Wounds of War” is a show detailing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and its effect on those who have risked their lives for their country by serving in the military.

Dr. Catherine Woteki, Under Secretary for USDA’s Research, Education, and Economics (REE) Mission Area, will keynote the John H. Silliker Lecture during the 2012 Annual Meeting of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP). Dr. Woteki, who also serves as the Department’s Chief Scientist, will address “Challenges in Food Security and Food Protection.” The meeting will be held July 22nd -25th in Providence, Rhode Island.

Prior to joining the USDA, Dr. Woteki served as Global Director of Scientific Affairs for Mars, Incorporated, where she managed the company’s scientific policy and research on matters of health, nutrition, and food safety. From 2002-2005, she was Dean of Agriculture and Professor of Human Nutrition at Iowa State University. Dr. Woteki served as the first Under Secretary for Food Safety at the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1997-2001, where she oversaw food safety policy development and continuity planning.

Her career in government has also included tenures with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Woteki received her M.S. and Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Now in its ninth year, the lecture series honors the scientific legacy of Dr. John H. Silliker, founder of Silliker. Dr. Silliker is retired and currently resides in northern Indiana.

Singapore Company Registration Specialists

According to the recently-published Global Software Piracy Study by Ipsos Public Affairs, IDC and the Business Software Association (BSA), 33% of programs used in Singapore offices and homes last year were pirated. Furthermore, the study furnished that business decision makers are more likely than other users to use pirated software more frequently and are more likely to install software for one computer on other computers in the office. At the same time, the commercial value of unlicensed software has increased to US$ 255 million last year.

Singapore company registration specialist Rikvin has observed that Singapore firms, especially small businesses that are concerned with keeping business costs low, are in good stead to earn 400% tax deduction or a 60% cash payout when they invest in any authentic software listed in the Productivity and Innovation Credit (PIC) Automation Equipment List.

Under the PIC scheme, the acquisition or leasing of prescribed automation equipment includes software adoption and the types of approved software are as follows:

office systems software
software for office automation service
enterprise resource planning (ERP)
customer relationship management (CRM)
inventory and record management
knowledge management (KM)
human resource and payroll management (HRM)
business management
accounting and assets management
personnel business travel request and management
computer-aided design system software
computer-aided manufacturing system software and
automated warehousing software.

For example, if a small Singapore incorporated company were to spend S$ 600 on an office systems software, the business owner has the option to choose between a 1) 400% Singapore corporate tax deduction or 2) 60% cash payout. If the business owner were to choose option 1, he is eligible for S$ 408 in tax credit {17% corporate tax rate x (S$ 600 x 400%)}. This means that he saves $ 408 in his company taxes and will be therefore effectively paying only S$ 192 for the software. If he were to choose option B, he would receive S$ 360 in cash payouts (60% x S$ 600). Hence, he only pays S$ 240 for the software.

“Software piracy is especially unnecessary in Singapore as companies can easily tap the Productivity and Innovation Credit (PIC) scheme for software spending. Furthermore, similar deductions are granted in costs if a firm invests in R&D for developing software (excluding those used for internal routine administration of business) even if they are not meant for resale. With such benefits already in place, it does not make financial sense for companies to risk infringements of the Copyright Act,” said Mr. Satish Bakhda, Head of Rikvin’s Operations.

“Under the amended Copyright Act, it is now a criminal offence for companies to wilfully infringe copyrights for a commercial advantage. First-time offenders can face a fine of up to S$ 20,000 or imprisonment of up to six months, or both. BSA has also announced a S$ 20,000 reward for every lead which ends with successful enforcement action. We are optimistic that with the PIC Scheme in place, Singapore businesses are positioned to lead global anti-piracy efforts,” added Mr. Bakhda.

Startup Canada a one-of-a-kind entrepreneurial movement kicked off in Nova Scotia last March is coming to York Region on May 24. Startup Canada is a six-month National Tour to ignite, inspire and celebrate entrepreneurship across the country and plans to shine a spotlight on the lessons learned, challenges overcome, and successes realized by Canadian entrepreneurs.

The National Tour is happening from March to September, 2012 and aims to engage 25,000 Canadians and 250 partner organizations across the country through 30 public Town Halls and more than 100 Fringe Events. Provincial steering committees will help showcase local entrepreneurs on a national media platform and coordinate additional awareness campaigns. The movement is also being fuelled online through Startup Canada’s interactive website, live web-streamed broadcasts of the tour, and active social media networks.
