Calyx Returns Under Clinique's Label

In the late '90s, I worked at a salad place at the mall. That was the first and last time I worked with food. My favorite part of the day was when the Macy's beauty counter ladies came over for a salad and I would accost the Prescriptives sales associates with questions--mostly about Calyx and the suite of color-inspired fragrances the brand sold then (I was yellow). Discussing beauty at my patently non-beauty focused jobs is a recurring theme in my lifestyle. Anywho, they were not interested in discussing the ins and outs of Calyx with me away from the counter, but I was obsessed and later bought several Px perfumes on my lunch break. Calyx was one of my first fragrance favorites.

Now, everyone's favorite verdant green leaf, grapefruit and orange flower blend is available once again (Prescriptives counters shuttered a few years ago, though most items from the line are available online). But you can imagine my surprise when this CLINIQUE branded Calyx bottle showed up at my apartment with a press release last night. It was much like that part in "Fringe" in the alternate universe where we see a marquee for "Back to the Future" starring Eric Stoltz, in addition to a present-day shot of Manhattan with the twin towers in the skyline. It's all very the Alternate 1985, to reference Back to the Future II (meta!).

But judging from my Instagram feed, Calyx is WELCOMED back into everyone's scent repertoire with open arms! Mine, as well. I'm wearing it today and its fresh, green essence takes me right back to a simpler time ushered in by the dulcet tones of Pearl Jam.
Calyx' Fictitious Fragrance Fan? Crysta of Fern Gully, of course. The adventurous dryad loves a rainforest and this lush, mysterious scent is the olfactory equivalent.

Top 5 Moments Of The 2013 Glamour Women Of The Year Awards

Truth be told, I straight up covet my invite to Glamour's spectacular annual affair. I went in 2009 and 2010 and then, alas, did not score an in until this year once again. And I was thrilled. Recipients and presenters included Hillary Clinton, Lady Gaga, Rose Byrne, Christy Turlington Burns, Iman, Liya Kebede, Melinda Gates, Gabby Giffords, Kaitlin Roig-Debellis, Catherine Martin and most of all, Malala Yousafzai. The scene? Editor in Chief Cindi Leive in burnt orange splendor, my man crush, Seth Meyers as MC (he did a wonderful job), pop star extraordinaire Lady Gaga in bride-of-Frankenstein wear, women who are doing things that are changing the world--and all of Carnegie Hall is softly scented with L'Oreal Paris Elnett. Here, my top five moments of the evening.

1. Malala Yousafzai's Impassioned Speech
This 16 year-old Pakistani girl caught the world's attention when the Taliban came onto her school bus and shot her in the head last October for criticizing the group's interpretation of Islam, which limits girls' access to education. She gave an incendiary speech that leaves no doubt in my mind that she will one day be a head of state. Many of her salient messages resonated with me because beauty is my industry and writing my function, but they rang true with impassioned power regardless of one's vocation.

I believe the gun has no power at all.
Beauty is not a face. Beauty is a light in the heart.
Support Malala Fund. They do not want chocolates. They do not want Xbox. They just want a book and a pen

This brave teen's incredible intellect posed such a threat to the men of the Taliban that they attempted to eliminate her--and have said that they'll continue to do so if she returns home. It says so much about their fear with regard to the power of women, no? Donate $10 to Malala Fund by texting Malala to 50555.

2. Kaitlin Roig-Debellis's Bravery
This Connecticut teacher piled her entire class into the classroom's tiny bathroom stall and took care to make sure the children knew they were loved when a gunman was tearing through Sandy Hook Elementary School last December. I admit that a blonde, married Connecticut-based elementary school teacher in her 20s is pretty much the antithesis of my definition of bravery. But her thinking on her feet saved 15 lives and the entire audience stood up to applaud her as the mothers of some of her 2012 class presented her with her well deserved award.

3. Gabby Gifford's Courage
She and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly received a joint award. The US representative was shot in the head while meeting with voters in a supermarket parking lot. Mark's sharing that the power couple's first date venue was the Arizona state prison touched my cold, dead heart. Giffords work on launching a gun safety organization (Americans For Responsible Solutions) is phenomenal.

4. Lady Gaga's Kindness
I admit that I'm not the biggest Gaga fan. I love her music. I think she's incredibly talented. She's incredibly original in so many ways, but she's unoriginal in just as many--and she never gives credit. That said, her kindness was evident last night to anyone with eyes. She embraced the children of PS 22 who sang a blend of two of her songs on stage last night and then encouraged them to keep up with their singing and cultivate their talents. She was incredibly sincere and there was no reason for her to use her short time on stage this way. She added that despite her gargantuan fame, "my true talent is not the clothes, and not the music. I really feel that what I am best at is seeing the potential in other people." She also referenced her campaign against bullying and mentioned the case of a young fan who committed suicide in 2011 after being bullied, Jamey Rodemeyer. "Do you really know how your child feels when they are home at night?" the pop star challenged the crowd. "If I could forfeit my Glamour cover, I'd give it to Malala," she admitted.

5. Barbra Streisand's Commitment To Women's Heart Disease Research
Because... Barbra. When my mom called to ask how the event was after I got home last night, all I said was "Barbra." And she gasped.

I attended Glamour Women Of The Year Awards last night and LORD that shit is moving. I always leave feeling like I'm a complete waste of life, despite having more jobs than Ryan Seacrest. Stay tuned for my top 5 moments of the night coming later today. Meanwhile, Rose Byrne looked scintillatingly stunning and makeup artist Leslie Lopez did the makeup honors. Leslie kept Rose’s skin fresh, dotting the apples of her cheeks with blush for a natural glow. After creating a smoky eye with gray and black shadows and a coat of black mascara, Leslie applied a deep merlot lip to compliment Rose’s stunning, wine-colored gown. Here, the beauty breakdown.

Regular readers know that I have three movies (well, two movies and one trilogy) that I MUST watch every year, at the same time annually. I especially like it when the season/weather is the same IRL as it is in the movie/TV show. In late October, I watch Back To The Future I/II/II. In November, I watch Beautiful Girls (to prepare me for the transition from NYC to my smaller hometown of Blue Bell, PA, even though that movie actually takes place in February in Massachusetts). Over Christmas, I HAVE to watch The Family Man, which is a totally underrated gem of genius. But back to Beautiful Girls, specifically Andera, one of my favorite pop culture characters ever. Can we talk about what an inspirashe she is? Incidentally, this isn't even the only FFF installment Uma Thurman has triggered; check out Mia Wallace of Pulp Fiction's treatment here.

Girl breezes into town to visit her cousin (app, as in appetizers, not the Steve Jobs variety, fan Stinky Womack, who owns the bar), slays the snow-covered SCENE and wins everyone over with her wit, her intellect and stunningly simple '90s-style cozy clothing and blonde hair. Then, she's all, bai, I'm going back to Chi town to be with my man and read the Sunday paper and listen to Van Morrison and drink ice cold martinis. She completely inadvertently seduces every male resident of Knight's Ridge simply by being herself and sashaying around in her THERMALS and winter coat, craftily deflecting the unwanted advances of an entire bro pack (INCLUDING A '90s MATT DILLON) without hurting anyone's feelings. She is not even being glamorous, which you know she is when she returns to her small fish in a pig pond lifestyle in Chicago. Her beauty game is so simple, yet incendiary.

Her perfume? She would rock a subtle, yet sexy warm scent, and there is no doubt in my mind that it would be Tocca's newest gal, Margaux. It blends the warmth of cashmere woods with warm musk, lightened with the sweetness of vanilla and yields an effect that's romantic while conjuring cozy. It is Andera personified. Primping All Over The World: Beauty Culture In Spain

Primping All Over The World is a new series featuring beauty customs I learn about in my travels. It's all very Margaret Mead.

The contents of my glamenities bag, provided by Iberia Airlines. I wish I could BUY that lip balm, it was so epic. Supe Christy Turlington, whom I had the PLEASURE/DELIGHT of sitting next to, applied it, as well.

En route to Barcelona last week (thanks to Crest for their generous hospitalidad!) in Iberia's business class (seriously, going back to a tiny tuna-can seat will be much like going back to the farm after Paris), I was surprised to see that my little bag of glamenities provided by the airline contained a mini standard-issue cologne. And so did my room at the beautiful Hotel Casa Fuster. As did the Iberia Airlines lounge at the airport, although it was gigantic. The Barcelona Sephora boasted zero makeup, yet an incredibly robust perfumerie section. El Corte Ingles housed a ton of makeup, however, lest you get worried about how Penelope Cruz sources her stash. I soon realized that scent is DEEPLY importante to the Spanish, much more so than to any other people of any other culture that I can remember.

Makeup: Scarlett Johansson, Rome Film Festival

Scarlett Johansson looked stunningly subtle at the Rome Film Festival in a Dolce&Gabbana cocktail dress with flowers and ancient coins print from the Spring/Summer 2014 collection, complemented by a look created with Dolce&Gabbana Make Up.

Scarlett was wearing the fragrance Dolce&Gabbana The One, as featured in the new advertising campaign “Street of Dreams” directed by Martin Scorsese. Make up artist Caroline Saulnier accentuated the star’s beautywith products from Dolce&Gabbana Make Up, starting with Perfect Matte Liquid Foundation in Classic as a base. She then focused on eyes, shading and outlining them with the Smooth Eye Colour Quad in Stromboli and the Crayon Intense Eyeliner in Coffee to give warm brown and gold accents. She also applied a berry tone to Scarlett’s lips using Classic Cream Lipstick in Cosmopolitan.

Q&A With Kourtney Kardashian

What are your beauty essentials?

To wake up, I always need to curl my lashes. I also love Elizabeth Arden's 8-hour cream and I could not live without the bronzer from our collection, Endless Summer Matte Bronzer.

What is your ideal date-night look?

For date night make-up I like a bright lip because it easily makes me feel put together, but Scott hates a bright lip so sometimes I won't wear it.

And then I had to ask what beauty tips Kris shared with her and her sisters:

My mother taught us something that I actually saw Khloe doing the other day and I realized I need to bring that back into my life. When she was working as a flight attendant she got into this habit of getting lots of hot water and a wash cloth and scrubbing her face every night to get rid of the makeup.

Also she always told us to never leave the house without a perfect bra and underwear because you never know who will see them!

I live for the Kardashian klan so later that day when I saw this set from Hanky Panky, I had to buy it.

Fake it till you make it: last week the New York Times published this article about tricking yourself into loving exercise.

This is the best diet piece I have seen in a long time.

Hold up: I thought egg whites were the healthier option. Read this before you order your next omelet.

1. Read Cheap Chica's Guide To Style
Liliana Vazquez is a fashion force to be reckoned with! I met her on a Procter & Gamble lab tour a couple years ago and every time I'm lucky enough to run into the former Philly resident (typically at Beyonce concerts, she graces me with an inexpensive store recommendation from where I then buy EVERYTHING. She knows her stuff and the tome contains tips on organizing your closet (this is currently CRACK to me. #old), which items warrant bigger bucks and how to strategize for flash sales and samples sales, among other gems. 2. Head to Express for workout gear -- seriously.
Express' new Performance range is my new jam for running gear. Their Core Compression Capri is adorned with darling little stripes, ruching and a stealth little pocket for my keys and cash. It'll set you back $50, but feels about the same quality as Lululemon. It's my new Lululemonaid.

3. Reacquaint yourself with the musical stylings of Red Hot Chili Peppers.
"Marry me girl, be my fairy to the world be my very own constellation" remains the most romantical thing I've heard to date. Still. Despite it's being followed by the less romantical "A teenage bride with a baby inside getting high on information." First born unicoooorrrrrrrn!

4. Make your own kind of coconut water on the go.

5. Buy teensy rings on Etsy

Throwback Thursday: Ethan Craft

I can make Sex And The City references all day long. Same with The Office. I'm pretty good when it comes to recalling Gossip Girl, The OC and I live for Kardashian quotes. However, despite watching the whole series growing up (and the movie), there is only one scene I remember from Lizzie McGuire and I think about it every time I shower.

You know how on the bottle it says 'Lather, rinse, repeat?' I don't repeat.

Was he on to something? Is the repeat just a (brilliant) marketing move? I've spent a decade of showers asking myself these very questions and only recently come to learn the truth: If it lathers, don't repeat --the bubbles mean your hair is clean. If your hair doesn't lather, then you repeat because the lack of lather is an indication of the oils on your scalp breaking down.

I know this because whenever there is a foreseeable blowout in my future, I don't wash my hair for up to a week before. One time I even went 10 days.... *pause for judgement*

Anyway, it goes without saying that by the time I get to the salon my hair needs to be washed and, as the stylist always informs me, it needs to be washed twice. Um obviously it needs a double dose -- it's dirty! And that's because I didn't wash it all week, but your hair might be different; it can be dirty after a day or two because you use lots of products or have an oily scalp and that means you have to repeat, too.

The point is: you only repeat if your hair is dirty and your hair is dirty if you don't see bubbles. So Ethan must have washed his hair every day, right?

10 Ways To Streamline Your Life This Fall

There’s a time and place for no-makeup makeup looks, haphazard hairdos and easy, flowing maxi dresses--and it’s Memorial Day through Labor Day, on the beach. The crisp air of fall marks a return to formality and ritual. And as you well know, ritual is vital when it comes to beauty. Incorporating a regimen of just a few products will maintain a healthy moisture balance, impart anti-aging benefits and avoid breakouts resulting from sampling incompatible formulations simultaneously. Focusing on a fresh start for fall, I've got tips for everything from skin care regimens to stash streamlining to closet clean-outs. Are you ready? Check it.

Institute A Beauty/Wellness Cleanse

Whether anti-aging, DIY or travel-friendly beauty is your concern, transitioning from summer’s abbreviated skin care and makeup regimens to the full routine is key.

1. Adjust your regimen of humidity-ready light moisturizers to the detailed version of your routine from serum to SPF. Note that the change of season can wreak havoc on skin, so a fresh lineup for the new season is best. Two-in-ones are the very portrait of efficiency--they lighten up a travel bag and yield estival low-maintenance looks, but that said, there’s a reason items that boast a singular vocation still have a place in our makeup bags. This autumn, simply kick bad beauty habits to the fallen foliage-adorned curb. Start by committing to a moisturizer with SPF daily.

2. Never again neglect your neck.

With fewer barbecues, family gatherings and weddings, you’ll have more time to make your living space more efficient. Spring cleaning gets all the press, but fall organization is just as critical. An update for your home decor is simple.

7. Add an autumnal aura by adding dashes of rich color via pillows and throws and declutter your living space by investing in organizers of all sorts--bins, boxes and baskets. Before you transition your purse paraphernalia into your new deep-hued leather delight, eliminate anything extraneous establishing residency in your bag--old receipts, that lipstick without the lid, stray wrappers, notes, etc.

Tend To Time Management And Goals

You’ve tackled your skin care regimen, beauty stash, closets and living space. Now, your duties progress from the physical to the abstract. Here’s how to streamline your social schedule, wellness efforts and work ambitions for fall. Temperate nights are temporal and up the tempo on your social life and your career. Events abound in the fall, as there's no need to do "roll call" every weekend to see who's in town, so ring in the season by planning nights out with friends you've missed. Conversely, wedding season is nearly over, so there’s less chance of running into a former acquaintance whose company is less than thrilling. The fall is the ideal time to reassess your relationships and spend less time with those that are less fulfilling.

8. To balance a hectic lifestyle, list ways you like to decompress--practicing yoga, scheduling a massage, indulging in a few hours of television, for example--and make sure to incorporate at least one of these into your weekly schedule. “You time” is nonnegotiable. Exercise also helps you unwind. Plan in advance your weekly workout schedule so you're more likely to stick with it.

9. At the office, investigate all of the ways you can keep track of agenda items from reminders to to-do lists to calendars from your smartphone via apps. Simply writing down work goals and the steps required to accomplish them forces you to create a process and yields clarity. Initiate a conversation with supervisors and clients to see what you could be doing in order to help their jobs run more smoothly.

10. Lastly, as new-agey as it sounds, creating an inspiration board for your professional (and personal) life featuring aspirational photos and phrases can help you visualize your ambition. Lest you doubt a vision board’s power (and I certainly did, initially), just know that I made one a couple years ago that included the “Vogue” logo and my byline underneath it. And then THIS happened.

I'm TRYING to pack for my trip to Barcelona with Crest 3D White... and this Carolina Herrera dress on the beautiful Allison Williams for the Young Lions Benefit Party held at the New York Public Library last night stopped me DEAD in my tracks. The smokey umber and pink shell kinetic square print viscose gown with silk overlay and a smokey umber mesh belt is from the Spring 2014 collection.
