Whenever I travel to a busy city, I want to have a home base that feels secluded and private, even in the midst of the hustle and bustle. That's the exact case with Pendry Chicago, which I love so much, I've stayed there twice in the past two years.

Of all the hotels I've stayed at in recent years, Pendry Chicago is among the best. I'm impressed with the service, rooms, and amenities in equal measure.

About Pendry Chicago

The hotel is located in the storied 1929 Carbide and Carbon Building, right on the Magnificent Mile. The art deco structure is reminiscent of a vintage green champagne bottle, which is especially noticeable when you stand further away from the building or see it amongst the Chicago skyline. Throughout the space, you'll find opulent touches like gold accents, overstuffed velvet settees, and dark wood paneling.

Why I Love Staying at Pendry Chicago

So nice, I stayed there twice! Pendry Chicago has become one of my repeat-visit hotels in Chicago for a number of reasons.

Location, Location, Location

The hotel's location truly can't be beat. It's on the Magnificent Mile, a stone's throw from landmarks like The Art Institute of Chicago and Cloud Gate. It's also very close to a Garrett Popcorn shop, which of course I love! The area is very walkable, with no shortage of restaurants, bars, and shops. It's also very close to the iconic River Walk.

Incredible Hotel Rooms

Every room at this hotel is utter perfection — and I should know, since I've stayed in both the King room and the King corner suite. I especially love the corner suites because they're more removed from the action and are super quiet. They're also unbelievably large, and appointed with a variety of amenities like yoga mats, plush robes, and workout machines.

I loved this glassed-in shower overlooking the city.

The beds are unbelievably comfortable. I sank right in and fell asleep immediately every night. The glassed-in shower is decked out with products from MiN New York, which all smell divine.

Impeccable Service

Everyone who works at Pendry Chicago is absolutely lovely and incredibly helpful. The people at check-in are beyond accommodating, even providing umbrellas on an extremely rainy day.

Multiple Restaurant and Bar Options

The Pendry has three different bars and restaurants to choose from. Venteux is a French brasserie with cozy velvet banquettes and dim, moody lighting. Chateau Carbide is a speakeasy-themed rooftop bar. Bar Pendry is the lobby bar, accented with heavy drapery and a double-sided fireplace.

I met friends for drinks in Bar Pendry and was very impressed with it as a lobby bar. Wonderful service, delicious drinks, lovely vibe. Honestly, what's not to love?

Final Info

If you're looking for a luxurious stay in the heart of the Magnificent Mile, Pendry Chicago is not to be missed.

The Ultimate Disneyland Guide, from Someone Who's Visited Over 300 Times

Headed to Disneyland? I’m jealous! As a Passholder and Magic Key Holder, I’ve been to Disneyland many, many (many) times. Over 300, in fact! Over the years, multiple friends, family members, and coworkers have asked for my tips and tricks to plan the perfect day at the Happiest Place on Earth. And now, I’m sharing my knowledge with you! Which rides should you hit, and in which order? What are the best snacks in the park? How do you find out where to meet Mickey and Minnie? I’m answering all those questions and more. Keep reading for everything you need to know before your next Disneyland trip.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU ARRIVE AT THE PARKS

1. What to know about arrival and parking.

Here’s the thing. Getting to Disneyland can be, well, a bit of a hassle. Parking is never going to be fun, and there’s always going to be a line. But there are some ways to make it easier for yourself!

Get there as early as you can.

You may not be an early riser — but you’ll have to be for a jam-packed Disneyland day. I recommend getting to the Mickey and Friends parking structure or Toy Story parking area by 7am. Yes, this is EARLY. But it will be worth it, I promise!

There are multiple places to park.

The easiest places to park are either the Mickey and Friends Parking Structure or the Toy Story Parking Area. I prefer the parking structure, since you get on a tram that takes you right to Downtown Disney. I’ve done the lot, too, but it can be a bit more difficult and take longer to get back to your car.

Parking costs are as follows:

$40 per car or motorcycle
$45 per oversized vehicle, motor home or tractor (without trailer) — Toy Story Parking Area only
$50 per bus or tractor (with extended trailer) — Toy Story Parking Area only

2. Get the Disneyland app.

Having the app is a must for your Disneyland visit. It’s chock-full of so many things you’ll need for the day:

It stores your tickets
You can buy Lightning Lane passes
You can mobile order food or make dining reservations
It links all your PhotoPass photos and lets you download them
You can view the park either as a map or a list, and break it down by Disneyland Park or California Adventure

Whew, that’s a lot! As you can see, the app comes in handy throughout the day.

3. Mobile order your food in advance.

Lines for food can get pretty long, especially at peak times. But there’s a great way around this conundrum — mobile order it in advance! You can even do it first thing in the morning before you're at the park, or throughout the day. Just make sure you have a credit card saved in the app so it goes pretty quickly. Then you can select the place to get food and the time so you don't have to wait in lines.

4. Bring at least one external charger.

This is imperative. If you don’t bring a charger, it’s pretty likely that your phone will die before the day is over. There's also the opportunity to buy a replaceable FuelRod charger at different spots around the park, like at the lockers on Main Street. These chargers are $38, but then you can swap it for free as many times as you want! There are spots all over the park where you can drop it and get a new one.

5. Lightning Lane will speed up your wait times.

If you don’t like waiting in ride lines, then Lightning Lane will absolutely be your best friend for the day. You can actually purchase it in advance when you buy your park ticket and make your reservation, or you can wait until you’re in the park and have gone through the arrival gates.

Lightning Lane starts at $32 per ticket. You can use it one time on each available ride, book your times right from the Disneyland app, and get free PhotoPass perks.

To note: Some rides require an additional Single Pass, even if you’ve bought Lightning Lane (like Radiator Springs Racers and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance).

Once you’ve bought your Lightning Lane pass for the day, you can start booking times right from the app. You can book another ride either after you’ve ridden the current Lightning Lane ride, or an hour and a half after that booking was made. I always set a timer or alarm on my phone to remind me when it’s time to book the next one.

Tap the three lines in the bottom right corner
Scroll down to "today's plans" and tap
Tap "tip board"
It should show all the rides and let you select your next Lightning Lane ride.

6. Lockers can be a lifesaver.

If you don't want to tote around all your stuff all day long, a locker is definitely worth it. On the Disneyland side, the lockers are right on Main Street, near the Starbucks. On the California Adventure side, they’re on Buena Vista Street. You can also get a locker on the Esplanade between the two parks.

Costs are $7 for a small locker and $10 for a large locker. I’ve always found a small locker to be big enough for my items.

7. Check out some character meet and greets.

Some characters like Peter Pan or Gaston roam around the park at random. Others have scheduled meet and greets, which you can find in the Disneyland app. Here are a few I recommend trying.

Fantasy Faire/Royal Hall: Located in Fantasyland, near the castle. This is where you get to meet the princesses. They’re always rotating, so you don’t know who you’ll meet — but usually they have ones like Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty. This happens until about 5pm.

Minnie’s House and Mickey’s House: Both are located in Toontown. There are always waits, but the houses are adorable and you actually get to meet the characters at the end of the walkthroughs.

My friend Jen and I got lucky with a five-minute wait to meet the man himself, Mickey Mouse!

Pixie Hollow: This is where you get to meet Tinker Bell! It’s not always open, but if so, it’s a great meet and greet.

8. Enjoy a character breakfast.

The character breakfasts are a great way to meet a ton of characters while enjoying a delicious buffet (complete with Mickey Waffles!). I’ve done them at Plaza Inn, Goofy’s Kitchen, and Storytellers. Each one has different themes and characters, but all are very fun and completely worth it. You see all the classic characters — they come to your table multiple times, take photos, and interact with you.

Plaza Inn is where you’ll get the most unique character interactions. On my last visit, I met the mice from Cinderella and Eeyore!

9. Have fun with your outfit!

Whether you go for a Disney bound (dressing inspired by a character but not AS a character), or you just don some polka dots for a Minnie Style-inspired look, you can have a little fun with your Disneyland ’fit! I’ve done both, and I love having the opportunity to step outside my typical fashion box. Some of my favorite looks have included polka dot jumpsuits and dresses, or Disney bounds inspired by the Wicked Stepsisters, the Queen of Hearts, and Tinker Bell. Plus, you can never go wrong with a pair of Minnie Ears!

10. Grab a castle photo ... but not right in front of it.

A photo with Sleeping Beauty Castle is an obvious must. But here’s the thing. If you try and snap a photo right in front of the castle, there will be TONS of people in it with you. My best advice is to head to one side, near the benches or right next to them. You’ll get a great view of the castle, and you can get it without anyone else taking up space in the pic.

If you really, REALLY want that photo right in front of the castle, though, go EARLY. And I mean at rope drop. Head straight to the castle and you’ll have it all to yourself.

11. Look for unique photo spots.

Speaking of photos … there are so many fun, unique spots to snap pics around the parks! Some of my favorites include the little pink door near the Mad Tea Party, the bridge to one side of the castle, the Small World wall, and the trick photo spot in Avengers Campus. Keep your eyes peeled for areas that look Disney-ish, but aren’t overdone — those will yield your best photo results!

WHAT RIDES ARE A MUST?

Okay, you’re inside Disneyland or California Adventure and you’re ready to ride the rides! These are the ones I absolutely recommend.

Fantasyland

Peter Pan: In my opinion, the absolute best ride ever! You fly through London in an enchanted pirate ship. This ride ALWAYS has a long wait — prepare to stand there for about 30-45 minutes — but it’s completely worth it. This is classic Disneyland at its finest and not one you should skip if you’ve never been to the parks.

Dumbo: There’s just something magical about flying around inside a Dumbo vehicle. This is another of my favorite rides in Fantasyland. I don’t recommend waiting more than 20 minutes, though.

Casey Jr.: I actually didn’t ride this until a few years ago, and can’t believe I missed out for so long. This train ride is AWESOME — don’t skip it! Tell the ride operator that you want to ride in the caboose or up front, because otherwise you might be stuck inside one of the cages in the middle.

Snow White: This is considered one of the “Dark Rides” (Pinocchio and Mr. Toad are the other two). Out of all three, this one is my favorite. It was revamped a few years ago, and it’s cute and fun.

Alice in Wonderland, King Arthur Carrousel, and the Mad Tea Party: All of these are classic Disneyland rides that should be experienced. If you hit the park at the right time, you won’t have to wait more than 20 minutes for each one.

Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough: This is a do not skip! You can actually walk through the castle and see Sleeping Beauty’s whole story. It’s very interactive and unique.

Mickey's Toontown

Toontown was remodeled and reopened in March 2023, after about a year being closed. There are LOTS of characters there (all the classic ones) — some just walk around, while Mickey and Minnie have dedicated houses where you meet them. There's also a Roger Rabbit ride and Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway.

Speaking of the Railway … it’s one of the best rides in the park! I am not going to spoil it for you, but I will tell you it is a MUST RIDE. There are also so many cute photo moments throughout the line!

***HOT TIP:*** Go to Toontown right when the park opens, especially since it’s located at the back. You can typically get on the Railway without much of a wait if you get there around 8:30. Plus, then you can use your Lightning Lane and ride it a second time. (Trust me, you’ll want to!)

It's a Small World

So, what part of the park is this ride in, anyway? It’s kind of Fantasyland, kind of Tomorrowland, so I’m calling it Small World Land. In any case, this ride is a MUST. It’s an iconic Disney ride, and it’s actually very different from the Disney World version because you can find all of the iconic Disney characters within their own countries!

***HOT TIP:*** This ride is especially fantastic during the hot summer months. Not only do you sit down for about 10 minutes, but it’s air conditioned. Enough said.

Plus, they do a holiday takeover every year that’s fantastic. Small World meets Winter Wonderland, complete with different music, dolls, and costumes.

It’s a Small World, all lit up for the holidays. It’s spectacular.

Will you get the Small World tune stuck in your head for days after riding? Probably. But is it something you just have to do when you go to Disneyland? Absolutely.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

If you’re a Star Wars fan, you just can’t skip Galaxy’s Edge. There are two rides — Millenium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. Both are fun, but Rise is INCREDIBLE. One of the most unique rides I’ve ever been on.

Even if you don’t buy anything else the entire day, buy an extra lightning lane for Rise. It’s worth it.

Adventureland, Tomorrowland, and Frontierland

To be honest, I’m not breaking out these three lands into individual ones because I don’t recommend allll of the rides in each one. These three lands do have a significant amount of rides to choose from, but these are the ones I think are most worth the, well, ride.

Haunted Mansion: Do I even need to say more? Come on, foolish mortals, you know you want to ride this epic icon. Yes, yes, ABSOLUTE YES. If you go to Disneyland between October and December, there’s a Nightmare Before Christmas takeover that’s not to be missed (and doesn’t happen at any of the other parks).

Space Mountain: The dark roller coaster you’ve always heard about, and yes, it’s worth the wait. If you want a Lightning Lane for it, get it early, because they book up FAST.

Indiana Jones: Snakes, spears, even the big ball rolling toward you … this ride has it all. It’s sort of a roller coaster, and you’ll get jostled around, but it’s worth it. If they have single rider open, do it.

Disneyland Train: Want to take a load off and ride a ride at the same time? This is your best bet. The train goes around the park and you can get off at different stops throughout or ride from Main Street all the way around. It’s actually pretty fun and convenient at the same time.

Winnie the Pooh: A very cute character ride complete with Heffalumps and Woozles. It’s located at the back of the park. Plus, there are usually meet and greets with the Pooh characters over there.

California Adventure

I’m actually putting all of my favorite DCA rides together instead of breaking them out by area of the park, since honestly the park is not that big and it isn’t difficult to find where anything is.

Radiator Springs Racers: A definite must! This Cars-themed roller coaster is an absolute blast. It’s also busy ALL. DAY. LONG. Try to get Lightning Lane for it so you don’t have to wait in line. The single rider line is a great option too and always moves quicker than the regular line (especially if you want to ride a second time).

It’s almost impossible to see a standby line for Radiator Springs Racers that’s only 10 minutes long! Typically, I’d recommend doing Single Rider for this ride.

Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: BREAKOUT!: MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE RIDE. It’s a must. This used to be the Tower of Terror ride, and now it’s Guardians themed. IT IS AMAZING. If you like drop rides and roller coasters, DO IT. And if you can snap a fun photo, all the better.

Incredicoaster: A very fun, Incredibles-themed roller coaster, complete with an upside-down loop. It also has a single rider line, which can be helpful on more crowded days.

The Little Mermaid: This is my favorite of all the character rides. You sit inside an oversized shell, hear the music, and get completely immersed in Ariel’s world. If you love The Little Mermaid, it’s an absolute must do.

Mickey’s Philharmagic: This is a 3D movie experience with a bunch of classic Disney movies in it. It’s so fun and adorable. (Psst: Look behind you at the very end for a Donald-themed surprise.)

Soarin’: Hop in a hot air balloon and take a ride through different locations around the world. This ride is just magical. I don’t know how to even explain why. But it’s a must.

Toy Story Midway Mania: This is a 3D, shooting gallery type of ride with all the Toy Story characters, and it’s very cute. Just don’t wait too long for it.

WHAT SHOULD YOU EAT?

Do I also have food I’d recommend throughout the parks? Absolutely. Here’s everything you should plan on eating during your Disney day.

Disneyland Food

Ronto Roasters: My absolute FAVORITE meal is the Ronto-less Garden Wrap here (a pita filled with Impossible™ sausage, spicy kimchi slaw, sweet pickled cucumbers, and Gochujang spread). It is DELICIOUS. You’ll find this in Star Wars Land and I could not recommend it more!

Little Red Wagon: Located on Main Street. The best corn dogs in the whole park!

Jolly Holiday: If you’re looking for everything from healthier options like salads and sandwiches to delicious tomato soup and holiday-themed treats, this is where to go. And if you’ve been curious about the Mickey Gingerbread Cookie, this is where you get it!

Plaza Inn: The fried chicken is epic. You get three pieces and a couple sides, so this meal is very shareable, too.

Stage Door Cafe: This is a good option in Frontierland. You can get chicken tenders and corn dogs here.

Tropical Hideaway: Want different flavors of dole whip or bao buns? This spot in Adventureland is a great option, and it has plenty of seating.

Bengal Barbecue: This grab-and-go restaurant located in Adventureland has different skewers. Another good quick service location, and they have a decent amount of seating inside.

Mint Julep Bar: An absolute must, located near the Haunted Mansion, with Mickey Beignets and nonalcoholic mint juleps. They always have special themed ones for the season. Trust me, you want these.

Refreshment Corner: Ridiculously good hot dogs. Right on Main Street.

Cafe Daisy: You can get items like donuts, hot dogs, and lemonade at this little restaurant in Toontown. The donuts are surprisingly delicious!

Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo: This quick-service restaurant inside Galaxy's Edge has food like fried chicken bao buns and a plant-based meatball sub. They also have the BEST cold brew in the entire park — it's topped with chocolate puffs!

Carnation Cafe: This spot on Main Street serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I personally prefer the breakfast menu because of the oversized Mickey waffle, but the fried pickles during lunch and dinner are pretty darn delicious, too.

California Adventure Food

Boudin Bakery Tour: A walk-through bakery tour on the pier that’s really fun. And you get free bread.

Pym Test Kitchen: The oversized pretzel here is a must. It’s HUGE. And delicious. Their breakfast options are also pretty decent.

Lamplight Lounge: If you want a reservation for a restaurant on that side, this is the one to try and get. Really good/fun drinks and decent food. They have a secret drink menu with cocktails that are delightful to look at (and drink, of course).

Award Wieners: This hot dog restaurant in Hollywood Land has unique takes on — you guessed it — hot dogs. My favorite is the Bacon Street Dog, an all-beef hot dog topped with grilled onions, bell peppers, and crispy bacon crumbles. I always ask for it without red pepper ketchup, but otherwise it comes with that as well.

Drink Up: 8 Reasons to Grab Coffee at the Woman-Owned Fan Girl Cafe in West Hollywood

I've turned into a complete fangirl ... of Fan Girl Cafe, that is! When my friend Jen asked me to accompany her there a few months ago, I had no idea it would quickly become my favorite coffee shop in Los Angeles. But it stole its way into my heart, and now I can't imagine a better spot. Here are the 8 reasons you should grab a cup of coffee at Fan Girl, stat.

1. It's queer, woman, and Latina owned.

Even if this coffee shop weren't awesome, I'd still love it just because of who owns it. It's really just a bonus that it's as fantastic as it is! The two married owners are women, Latina, and queer, and it's a safe space for ALL.

2. It's themed after women in music.

If you love music, this is the place for you. There are framed photos of artists everywhere you look, and music-themed decor around every corner. Even the bathrooms have music themes — one may even play a Gwen Stefani song, but I can't say for sure. (Well, I can, but I don't want to spoil your good time.)

3. The space is FUN.

I absolutely love this little shop. It's pink, black, and white, with lots of little tables scattered around the room. They sell tons of adorable merchandise, too, like stickers and postcards. I especially love the neon sign in the front corner with a bright pink couch underneath. I've spent many a morning sitting there sipping my coffee!

4. The drinks are delicious.

Now what you're really here for ... the drinks! I've made it a habit to try as many drinks as possible on their menu, and I have never been disappointed. Among my favorites are:

Silk Shiffon Iced Tea: A mix of blue chamomile tea and lavender lemonade. This. Drink. Is. Delicious. It's the first one I ever tried, so it has a special place in my heart. It's totally refreshing and delicious!

Cosmic Love Iced Tea: Blue chamomile tea and strawberry dragonfruit lemonade

So Long, London-Fog Tea Latte: Earl Grey infused with herbal rose petals, honey, and vanilla. You can get it hot or iced. I chose iced and topped it with non-dairy cold foam. In other words ... YUM.

5. It's the perfect spot for meetings or hangouts with friends.

I've honestly lost track of how many times I've said to fellow writers or to friends, "Have you been to Fan Girl yet?" I've taken tons of meetings here, and done weekend coffee meetups, too. I love the vibe, and I love that there are always tables available (although it does get pretty busy after about 10am).

6. It's a great place to bring your laptop, too.

Can you work at Fan Girl? You sure can! They have free WiFi, so you can bring your laptop and type away.

7. It's conveniently located in West Hollywood.

Let's be serious — the most important part of this experience is the fun photos! I'm no stranger to Instagram popups — I've visited installations made of bubbles, illusions, and candy, just to name a few. Of course I'd want to take pics in a bar made of ice!

There are so many different spots to take photos within each of the ice bars. Need a pic with King Kong? Check! Feel like being an icy-cool DJ? Double check! Want to feel like king or queen for a day? Triple check! Seriously, I had a blast running around the room and snapping photos in my fur coat.

I also love that the V-Ice-P comes with commemorative photos. On both visits, we had so much fun snapping these! Depending on who's working that day, they might even give you extra photos when you leave (I had that happen on both visits!).

When to Go

I suggest going to Minus5 Ice Bar early in the day. Hey, it's Vegas — drinking can start whenever you feel like it! Both times that I went, I chose to go around 11:30am, which meant I had the place basically to myself. The ice bar can definitely get crowded, especially on weekends, so if you want your pick of places to sit and photos without people in them, going early is definitely better.

You probably won’t want to stay more than an hour, since, let’s face it, it does get pretty cold in there. It's an ice bar, after all!

Titanic Belfast: The Top 15 Reasons to Visit This Epic Museum

My best friend Andrew and I watch Titanic every Valentine's Day. It's been a tradition for years, and in recent times includes his fiancé, Nicholas. We can quote every line, we know the ins and outs of the history, we discuss how the artifacts are represented. It doesn't feel right to say I'm obsessed with the Titanic, but it's difficult to know how else to describe a fascination that's gone back decades at this point (especially since I saw the movie in the theater five times when it came out in 1997).

It seems obvious, then, that I simply had to visit Titanic Belfast when I was in Ireland. This museum still had me learning new stories and seeing artifacts I didn't even know existed. The sinking is one of the most heartbreaking tragedies in history, and I thought the way the museum handled it was absolutely perfect. Keep reading to discover the 15 reasons you should visit Titanic Belfast.

1. They have one of the last remaining deck chairs from the ship.

This is one of only six remaining deck chairs from the ship. It was found floating in the water by the Mackay-Bennett, which was the first of four ships chartered by the White Star Line to search for bodies after the sinking.

2. Only 12 lifejackets still exist, including this one.

There were over 3,500 lifebelts (AKA life vests or lifejackets) on the Titanic — and only 12 are left. This Fosbery lifejacket was recovered from the wreck site by the Mackay-Bennett.

3. You're given White Star Line tickets to enter the museum.

If you want to live out your fantasies of feeling like Jack winning his ticket to Titanic, your entry ticket will help with that. Each ticket is printed to look like one you would hand to an attendant as you board.

4. Speaking of tickets ... the museum actually has one of the genuine tickets used for the launch.

This wasn't actually a ticket used to board the ship. On the day of the initial launch, people could purchase tickets to see the ship leave from the harbor in Belfast on May 31, 1911. Yes, this was almost a full year before the ship's trip from Southampton.

5. If you were wondering how First Class passengers dined, you can see a menu from the last lunch on board the ship.

This menu belonged to passenger Ruth Dodge, and was for the First Class luncheon on April 14, 1912. Passengers could choose from a variety of foods, including chicken a la Maryland, grilled mutton chops, potted shrimps, soused herrings, and roast beef. The recovered menu even has a handwritten note from a ship steward who knew the family, which reads, "With compliments & best wishes from Frederic Dent Ray, 56 Palmer Park, Reading, Berks."

6. The missing binocular box key was recovered and is on display.

This fact is actually briefly mentioned in Titanic, but I never caught it until after visiting Titanic Belfast — and I didn't know about it until then. This binocular box key belonged to Second Officer David Blair, who was reassigned just before the ship's maiden voyage. Because of his hasty departure, he kept the key in his pocket instead of leaving it on the ship, which meant there was no access to binoculars on the night of the sinking. The lookout, Fred Fleet, told the official inquiry that if he had binoculars, he would have seen the iceberg sooner.

7. You can take photos on the First Class promenade deck.

As you walk through the museum, you'll come to the First Class promenade. At this juncture, there's a video showing what the view would have been like from the deck. It's also one of the areas where you can take a photo. I will admit that while most of the museum feels extremely somber, this is a part that attempts — however much in vain it may be — to slightly lighten the mental and emotional load.

8. Read some of the devastating last messages and distress calls sent from the ship.

One of the saddest things I came across in the museum was the distress calls sent as the Titanic was sinking. There are screens after screens of these messages sent to surrounding ships, crying out for help as the ship went down.

9. Learn more about Thomas Andrews, the managing director in charge of design for Titanic.

As a lifelong fan of Victor Garber, I've always had a special affinity for his portrayal of Thomas Andrews in Titanic. You can learn more about the actual Andrews and how he designed the ship.

10. See the actual violin played by Wallace Hartley as the ship went down.

This is one of the artifacts that truly shocked me. The violin, which belonged to Wallace Hartley, was a gift from his fiancée, Maria Robinson. The string quartet played on the deck as the ship sank, later inspiring the phrase, "And the band played on." While Hartley did not survive, his violin was later found floating atop the water within its case.

11. Discover an original First Class accommodation plan, which was issued to Ida and Isidor Straus.

If you've watched Titanic, you may remember the old couple holding each other in bed as the ship finally sinks. The two people were Ida and Isidor Straus, who owned Macy's department store in New York City. They were issued a First Class accommodation plan to help them navigate the ship. Their story is truly incredible — instead of trying to fight for survival, Ida insisted that their personal maid, Ellen Bird, would go in their place. She had this plan in her possession when she was saved.

12. See a pocket watch that stopped the moment it went into the ocean.

13. Stand over the sunken ship as it floats by.

One of the most haunting areas of the museum is a glass-bottomed floor where you can watch the wreckage of the Titanic float past. The entire video takes a couple of minutes.

Yes, the building you enter looks like the ship itself. It's just one more way that the Titanic Belfast immerses you in the experience from the moment you arrive.

Yes, you can take a photo at a recreation of the bow of the ship and feel just like Leo and Kate. It was actually difficult to want to smile here, after witnessing everything I had. But it adds one last moment of lightness to an otherwise tragic tale.

Drinking beer and enjoying spa treatments simultaneously? You must have stepped into Oakwell Beer Spa. During my recent trip to Denver, I was lucky enough to experience this one-of-a-kind spa, and I'm here to give you all the deliciously hoppy details.

My friend Bri and I were very excited to see what Oakwell Beer Spa was all about. As soon as we stepped through the doors, we were whisked away into a beer lover's paradise.

The front of the spa is open and airy, with multiple comfortable couches and chairs spread throughout the space. At the back of the room you'll find the "taproom" — there are a variety of interactive taps that work by holding up an innovative wristband. You can choose from beer, wine, or cider. We decided not to indulge in the beer offerings since it was fairly early in the day, but I did enjoy the fact that the spa partners with a local brewery each month.

Our favorite area of the entry room was, of course, the ball-filled tub. Did we take tons of photos here? The answer would be a resounding YES. We had a blast doing a photo shoot in the tub before our services! Shoutout to the employees of the spa for helping take our pictures and making us laugh so much.

A Beer Therapy Ritual, you ask? Yes! Each ritual includes a private spa suite with a massive therapeutic jacuzzi tub, an infrared sauna, and personal rain shower. The suite was beautiful — dim lighting, hanging greenery, and, of course, the massive tub. It also includes two plush robes, which we slipped into post-soak.

For the ritual itself, you choose from multiple sachets infused with a mix of herbs, malted barley, and aromatic hops that are dropped into the tub while you're inside it. You're not actually soaking in beer, but still getting all the benefits. The cedar hydrotherapy tub has bubbling jets and steaming water that stays that way for about 70 minutes of your 90-minute experience.

We were each given cozy robes to change into during our time in the spa suite.

The rain shower inside our spa suite was delightful, and came complete with beer-infused shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.

We began with a short session in our sauna. I'll admit that we only stayed in there for about five minutes, because we were already becoming too warm and sweaty! We quickly transferred into our beer tub and enjoyed a full hour of soaking while simultaneously snacking on our charcuterie board and drinking mimosas. I loved how warm the water stayed, how soft my skin felt, and how delightfully calming the hydrotherapy experience was.

Once our tub started draining, we still had 20 more minutes left in the room. We each had time to shower and get dressed before heading to our zero gravity massages.

And, wow, the massages. This was a different type of massage than I've ever experienced, and I loved every second of it. We were led into a dark room with a row of massage chairs, and each settled into one. Once we sat down and covered ourselves with cozy blankets, we were raised up and back into the air, with star-like lights twinkling above us. The massage chair featured a full-body air compression function and L-track rollers that worked through every single knot and strain in my body. I was only in the chair for 15 minutes and fell asleep! I chose pretty deep pressure, and I loved how much it kneaded my calves, hips, shoulders, and neck. I definitely could have sat in that chair for at least an hour.

In all my years going to spas, I have never experienced one quite like this. If you love beer and relaxation, this is absolutely worth a visit. Get ready to glow! During my last trip to Boston, I experienced a treatment at Glowbar on Newbury Street. What an absolute delight!

I felt like I was immediately whisked away to a delightful oasis the moment I stepped through the door. Even though this location is on busy Newbury Street, it's so calm and refreshing inside — I immediately forgot about all the hustle and bustle steps away!

I think this is an interesting way to begin the appointment — you're responsible for cleansing your skin before meeting with your facialist. I haven't usually needed to do that, but actually enjoyed making sure my skin was good and clean before the treatment.

Once my skin was good and cleansed, I waited for my esthetician in a little nook off the front area. She came to retrieve me and lead me to my treatment room. From there, the magic really began!

Each treatment at Glowbar is 30 minutes. That sounds short — but wow, do those 30 minutes pack a major punch for your skin! My esthetician put together a customized facial just for my skin type and concerns.

Since it was wintertime, my skin was SUPER dry and flaky. My treatment focused on hydration with a light chemical peel to slough off dead skin and a super hydrating mask. My esthetician also performed light extractions to remove buildup around my nose and chin.

After only 30 minutes, my skin was GLOWING. Not surprising, since this is Glowbar, after all! I seriously couldn't believe how much better my skin looked in such a short amount of time. And of course I had to snap a photo with their signature mirror to show off the radiance. Not to mention I was smiling from ear to ear for DAYS.

Astra Lumina is a sensory, celestial-themed journey of light and sound that happens every November and December at South Coast Botanic Garden.

My favorite hotel in Las Vegas? Hands down, it's The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. From the well-appointed guest rooms to the luxurious spa, the multiple pools to the variety of restaurants, there truly isn't any comparison. Plus, the location right in the center of the Las Vegas Strip can't be beat! Read on to see why this is where you should stay next time you head to Sin City.

THE ROOMS

I've stayed at The Cosmopolitan multiple times over the years. During my last trip — a girls' weekend with my best friend, where we were supposed to see Shawn Mendes before he canceled his tour (but that's another story for another day), we chose one of the hotel's Terrace Studio rooms.

Every room I've stayed in at The Cosmopolitan has been fantastic, but this one was the best yet. It has super comfortable beds (I was asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow each night!), a bathroom with a large soaking tub, and even a terrace with a fabulous view of the city below.

There's no shortage of amazing restaurants in Vegas. However, the absolute best are all found at The Cosmopolitan! While we did leave the hotel occasionally, we actually enjoyed multiple meals here, simply because there are so many inviting choices at arm's length. THE POOLS

I have a hot tip for you. If you have the chance, get a cabana at one of The Cosmopolitan's pools. We treated ourselves to one at the Chelsea Pool (another hot tip: get one during the week, because it's cheaper than on the weekend), and we had the best time! Your fee for the cabana includes your food and beverages for the day, plus you get a quiet location away from the hustle and bustle of the pool (also some built-in shade, which is nice for pale people like myself!). We opted for the Chelsea Pool because it was a bit quieter and more relaxed — if you like more of a party vibe, try the Boulevard Pool.

If you live in Los Angeles and you're around during the holiday season, there's one activity absolutely worth doing — taking in a performance of Love Actually Live at The Wallis. I've seen it twice, and it's been overwhelmingly fun and joyous both times. That's thanks in large part to the astonishingly wonderful cast, helmed this year by the incomparable Ruby Lewis playing the part of Sarah (and, on the night I saw it, doubling as Natalie). I sat down with Ruby to chat about her beginnings in musical theater, how she came to be part of this quintessential LA holiday tradition (that's now celebrating the movie's 20th anniversary!), and even some of her go-to beauty product favorites. You're no stranger to Love Actually Live, since it's your third time performing in the show! What keeps you coming back?
The only reason I've missed years is because I've been out of town. It's become a holiday tradition for me. It's my family, it's like being home for the holidays.

This year, you're playing Sarah. What drew you to the role?
As I've gotten older, I'm more drawn to the melancholy songs that I can really emote through, and really do continue on the arc of the character. Being from Kentucky, trying to find a different sound, I've bene able to indulge myself in the Joni Mitchell stuff.

Are there any songs you're really excited about performing this year?
I love "River," it's heartbreaking. "Both Sides Now" — what I would consider one of the 11:00 numbers of the show. It ends up being a four-part song and is so powerful. "Puppy Love" is so fun too as an ensemble song that always gets a good reaction.

You're no stranger to For the Record, who produces this show. What keeps you coming back for more performances with them?
2011 was my first show. Having been in LA for a year at that point, I was searching for people to be my tribe. I was living in Thai Town and I discovered a bar on Vermont Avenue. They were doing open mic nights for musical theater people. I started going on Mondays and got on the mailing list. I saw the auditions for Baz. I met these people, I became privy to the whole concept and thought it was brilliant. Subsequently, became really close friends with everybody. It's made my entire career, to be honest. It's led to things in Vegas and on Broadway that otherwise I wouldn't have been considered for. I owe my career to them. Anytime they call, I pick up the phone!

How did you first become interested in performing?
I've been doing theater my whole life. It feeds me in a way that no other kind of performance will. Can't stop won't stop! My parents met in community theater in my hometown — my mom was directing The Music Man and was Marian, my dad was doing sound and lights. I got my start in the same community theater, it was something I always wanted to be a part of. I never decided on LA, but came off the tour of Grease and had spent some time in LA on that tour, and that initially brought me out here.

Let's talk about your beauty and skincare routine a bit! What is your daily beauty and skijncare regimen — and does it change when you're performing and wearing a lot more makeup?
My skin hates wearing stage makeup every day. My nighttime routine with astringents has been important, making sure everything is out of my pores.

My biggest secret is hot yoga. I go every day before the show and sweat it all out.

Because we wear wigs, I use a strengthener and hair mask.

What are your top beauty essentials?
I always use Kiehl's — I find it's gentle enough but gets the job done.

I use Olaplex because I have fine hair, so it needs a little help.

I've turned on to a lot of bar soaps, including for my hair. It's been kind of a game changer!

What are some things you do for fun when you're not performing?
I travel a lot, do a lot of cruise ship work and symphony out of town work. Traveling is a side job of mine.

I've been enjoying playing tourist wherever I am and wherever the gigs take me. I've been loving solo travel. I had my first trip to Amsterdam, and that was life changing.

During a recent trip to New Orleans, I was invited to experience the fabulous Hot Tin at The Pontchartrain Hotel. I said yes faster than you can say, "Tennessee Williams wrote Cat on a Hot Tin Roof while he lived in New Orleans!" I'm always a fan of a rooftop bar, and Hot Tin does not disappoint. Read on to find out more about this can't-miss spot in NOLA!

Inspired by a 1940s artist loft, Hot Tin holds curiosities around every corner. You never know what you may find next to you! I especially loved finding unique paintings, board games, and typewriters throughout the space.

I'm a sucker for old typewriters, and I loved finding this old Royal one.

But here's what I'm really here to talk about ... the cocktails. Wow, is it worth going to Hot Tin for one of these! They're $14 each, and truly spectacular. My mom and I pored over the menu and had quite a difficult time choosing because every single one sounded utterly divine!

And, since we all know you come to a rooftop bar for the views ... well, of course they don't disappoint! The bar offers a seriously stunning 270-degree view of Downtown New Orleans and the Mississippi River. While there are plenty of seats inside, going out onto the balcony is certainly not to be missed!

If you're in New Orleans and need a fun bar with excellent cocktails, Hot Tin should absolutely be on your list. The bar opens at 2pm every day and is first come, first served. We went on a Friday night and it was PACKED (shout out to Hot Tin for reserving a table for us with the most fun, throne-like chairs we'd ever seen!). I'd recommend going early for the best seat — and the best view, of course!

Ready, set, glow! I'm always, always looking for a facial that will leave my skin hydrated, youthful-looking, dewy, and super glowy. And I've found it at Formula Fig in West Hollywood!

I was searching lately for a new spot to get a facial — primarily in West Hollywood, though I would basically travel the earth for great skin. In my research, I happened upon Formula Fig, and I just knew on sight that it was worth checking out.

They offer a variety of injectables and high tech facials, all of which target different skin concerns and needs. While I'm not opposed to Botox (or Stingers, as they're referred to here), I really wanted to focus on overall hydration and nourishment for my skin.

I loved all of the photo moments found at this space.

Each facial is 30 minutes, with incredible results! After perusing the menu of treatments — there are a whopping six different facials to choose from! — I selected the Hydrate + Glow core facial. This facial includes a mix of technology, tools, and products that leave skin looking radiant and feeling hydrated (of course).

THE TECHNOLOGY

Diamond-Tip Microdermabrasion: A form of advanced exfoliation that helps remove dead skin cells, stimulate new cellular growth, and give the skin a fresher look. I've had microdermabrasion before, and this experience was super easy and calming; the microdermabrasion tip felt like a light pressured scratching across my face. I've also noticed a lot of flaking and peeling from other microdermabrasion sessions that lasted up to a week in the past, but this one didn't produce any unsightly peeling afterward!

Pressurized Oxygen Serum Infusion: This cooling, calming oxygen is sprayed onto the skin to help absorb serums and improve skin's hydration levels. It's used with 98% pure oxygen so active ingredients can deeply penetrate the skin.

LED Light Therapy: This form of light therapy penetrates the skin to help rejuvenate, repair tissue, reduce inflammation, decrease harmful bacteria, and stimulate collagen.

Ultrasonic Skin Slider: It uses high frequency to gently dislodge dirt and debris on skin's surface and help exfoliate.

THE PRODUCTS AND TREATMENT

First of all, the treatment rooms are cozy and inviting. While other spas and salons may have you change into a robe or facial wrap, here, you simply climb up into the comfortable chair and lean back. I actually didn't mind staying in my regular clothes, especially since the session is only 30 minutes.

THE RESULTS

I came in with skin that was dull, dehydrated, flaky, pretty much just not how I wanted it to look OR feel. After just 30 minutes, my skin immediately felt so dewy, refreshed, and hydrated. I literally could FEEL the difference from before and after the treatment! Almost a week later, my skin is still so nourished and hydrated that I have barely even needed to moisturize (though, of course, I have been) — it's baby soft and insanely glowy.

Where to Stay at Disneyland: Element by Westin Anaheim

There are so many hotels near Disneyland that it can feel overwhelming to choose one. Well, I recently stayed at the Element by Westin Anaheim, and I'm here to tell you it should absolutely make your list! Here's why I loved it.

The Element by Westin Anaheim is only about a 15-minute walk from Disneyland!

THE LOCATION.

For starters, it's a hop, skip and a jump from Disneyland and California Adventure! While it's a bit further away from the parks than some of the other hotels, that doesn't mean it isn't convenient. It's located near the Toy Story parking lot area, so it's about a 15-20 minute walk from the parks, or a very short uber ride to the Harbor Street entrance.

I actually prefer to stay a bit further away from the park entrance sometimes, especially if I don't want to deal with the overwhelming crowds right at the crosswalks — so the Element by Westin Anaheim is perfect for those times.

IT'S SO BRIGHT AND CLEAN.

Really — it's GORGEOUS inside. The hotel is so bright, spacious and airy, and just feels clean. From the lobby to the dining area, and especially inside the guest rooms, it's completely spic and span. It's clear that attention is paid to ensuring guests have a delightful experience from start to finish, and that starts wtih the property having that just-cleaned feeling.

THE ROOMS ARE SPACIOUS AND COMFORTABLE.

I'm always a sucker for a room that comes with creature comforts, and the ones here have those in spades. They come equipped with a full kitchen — we're talking a stove, microwave and refrigerator! So if you're staying for multiple days and don't want to spend a ton of money on the food at Disneyland, this is a perfect option. The seating area is large, too, with a sectional and table.

But it's the beds and bathroom that really get my vote here. The beds are so comfortable — I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow! The bedding is super soft and plush, too. Meanwhile, the bathroom is huge, and the shower comes with full-sized products, which is always a plus in my book! Not to mention the water pressure is FANTASTIC. I can't confirm or deny this, but I may have taken 2-3 showers a day while I stayed here just because I loved the shower so much!

YOU GET FREE BREAKFAST.

Yes, you read that right! Every stay at the Element by Westin Anaheim includes free breakfast. We're talking eggs, bacon, hash browns, yogurt, bagels, fruit ... the amount of choices was actually staggering. I was really impressed not only at the variety, but the quality of the food, too.

All in all, the Element by Westin Anaheim is absolutely worth a stay the next time you're going to Disneyland. I can't wait to stay here again!

What to Do in LA: Visit the Art Gallery Curated by Street Artist MegZany at Four Seasons Westlake Village

Last week I had the immense pleasure to attend the opening night of Love Is An Art, the new collection curated by MegZany for the art gallery at Four Seasons Westlake Village. I'm so beyond happy I got to be there!

MegZany has been one of my favorite artists for years now — I always love seeing her pieces pop up around LA (if you've seen irreverent Strawberry Shortcakes, that's her!), and I even interviewed her on my blog a few years ago. (Click here to read it!) So when I saw that she curated this show, I simply had to go!

This Citrusy, Tangy-Scented Jurlique Body Wash Makes My Shower Feel (and Smell!) Like a Fancy Spa

One of my longest-running obsessions? Shower gel. I've been a faithful shower gel and body wash user since I was in high school and first discovered the magic of Caress. Jamie's Dating Diary: The First One (Not Actually THE One)

“You’re actually really cool,” Cameron said as he swam close to me in his Olympic-sized pool, gazing into my eyes with the combination of admiration and lust that only a new Tinder date can seem to muster. “Girls my age just don’t have anything to talk about. We should definitely hang out again sometime.”

It would be interesting enough if only one guy ever said that to me. But, truth be told, Cameron is just one of the dozens who have uttered those very same words — sometimes in a pool, sometimes in bed, sometimes on my couch, sometimes just over a text — but, honestly, it’s nothing I haven’t heard before.

Cameron was different, though — because he was the first. The first guy I ever talked to on Tinder and actually met in person. The first guy who said these words to me. The first guy I dated who was only 25. And, yes, I say “only” — because I’m over 40. And, more often than not, the only guys who will date me are 25.

Okay, maybe 25 is a bit of a stretch.

I’ve gone in hard on the dating apps for seven years. Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, JSwipe, OKCupid, Match, Coffee Meets Bagel, JDate, you name it. And in that time, I’ve come to realize one very major thing. I am typically only attractive to guys in their 20s. “Men” who are 21-28, with the median age around 25, to be more precise.

You may be thinking, “Well, she must only swipe on guys in their 20s. What a cougar.” You’d be wrong. (And let’s not even get started on how a 40-year-old woman isn’t actually someone I consider old enough to be called a cougar in the first place, yet I’ve been called that, MILF and worse more than once.) I’ve set my age max as high as 55, just to see what happens.

My normal swiping range used to be between 23-49, mainly to see whether the assumptions I’ve ascertained about the young ones were correct. (I've since upped the lowest age to 30, because I'm now 43.) But there is a strange phenomenon that happens again and again — I swipe right on the men 30 and up. They just don’t swipe right on me.

This has become an anthropological study for me of sorts. And in my study of this phenomenon, I’ve come to discern that this is because of two very distinct factors. Most straight men seem to either want a) the younger woman, or b) the older woman (AKA the always popular Mrs. Robinson fantasy).

So, to a man in his early to mid 20s, a late-30-something or early 40-something woman is extremely desirable, especially since the younger woman would still be in high school. Add the fact that I’m not your stereotypical “older woman” and the desire rebounds on itself infinitely. Because, look. I’m a fashion and beauty writer. I have my own apartment in LA. I'm on TikTok. I don’t go to bed at 9:30 on a weeknight or have kids I need to get to school. I know what “lit” means. (The 20-somethings always get a kick out of that last one.) And, honestly, I look pretty young. I was blessed with great genes that still have me getting carded most places I go, so most guys in their 20s ask if I’m lying about my age and am actually 25. When I tell them that, yes, I am actually 40, the desire goes up even higher.

But to men over 30?

They either want the 20-something or the over-40-something — because these women are both sexier, and neither is as threatening as a woman in her late 30s or early 40s who must be ready to settle down and get married to the first over 30 guy who comes knocking. (This is solely what I assume they must think, since none of them will even match with me so I can find out if I’m right.) My profile doesn’t state those factors—I truly think my age alone is enough to scare them off. And, I don’t know for sure, but the fact that I look young may work as a deterrent for these older men as well, because maybe I just don’t look old enough for them to take me seriously if they were ever going to.

But, back to Cameron.

I’d been on Tinder for a few months, swiping, sort of haphazardly, matching with a few people but not really talking to them — and not really caring whether I actually ever met up with anyone. And then, one fateful Saturday night, that all changed. There I was, lying on my couch, Netflix on in the background, my thumb getting tired from swiping, starting to think, “I-might-be-giving-myself-carpal-tunnel-from-all-this-stupid-swiping-and-why-was-I-even-doing-it-in-the-first-place-and-maybe-I-should-just-stop-already-because-who-even-cares-right?”

Cameron came up. He was cute in a normal, not-too-hot-but-he-probably-knows-he’s-good-looking kind of way. His brown eyes looked kind, he had a bit of scruff, he looked fit without being too sculpted in stereotypical LA fashion. So I swiped right. And he swiped right. And we started messaging, fairly rapid fire, exchanging witty banter and subtle pleasantries. We had a weird but funny conversation about aliens, somehow stemming from the fact that I was from Cleveland. We moved to text fairly quickly, especially considering I’d never even really chatted with anyone on the app before, but it just felt right.

And then, after about 40 minutes of our aforementioned witty banter, came the fateful messages.

Me: “Where are you from?”
Cameron: “I’m an LA native. I have my own place, but right now I’m house sitting for my parents in Bel Air.”
Me: “Oooh, Bel Air? Look at you all fancy.”
Cameron: “Haha not really, it’s pretty normal. But they do have a heated pool that would feel amazing on this semi-cold May night. ;)”
Me: “Oh, is that so? Sounds nice. I’m not really a get in someone’s pool on the first night kind of gal, though.”
Cameron: “Well, we don’t have to do anything crazy or anything you’re not comfortable with. You don’t even have to sleep over if you’re not comfortable. But we can hang out and talk and smoke weed and go swimming.”

This definitely gave me pause. At the time, I'd never even talked to a guy on Tinder before. I'd certainly never been propositioned. And I have to admit — I. Was. Terrified. What if he was a serial killer? What if my head wound up in his freezer? What if the weed were laced with acid or meth or something? (It may be obvious at this point that I don't smoke much.)

But I also have to admit I was curious for a couple reasons.

1) What was this house in Bel Air like? (Yes, it may have been shallow, but come on. It’s Bel Air. And my only knowledge of that neighborhood at this point was what I’d seen on Fresh Prince).

2) What if we had fun and he was actually normal and we started dating?

So I did the (fairly) responsible thing — I texted my friend Gerold to let him know where I'd be and what (I assumed) I'd be doing. I sent him the guy's photo and told him if I didn't text by 1pm the next day, I was probably dead and he should call the cops.

Me: "Okay, I can be there in 40 minutes."
Cameron: "Awesome, see you then."

And then I got an Uber and hightailed it to Bel Air to check things out for myself.

And, after the Uber driver and I got sufficiently lost (those people in Bel Air do NOT want strangers finding them), we got to the house. Cameron opened the door, and I'm pretty sure I emitted an audible sigh of relief when I saw that he looked exactly like his profile photos. He had a moderately deep voice, kind-looking brown eyes, and was sweet from the start. He got me a beer and took me out to the backyard, which was not only bigger than my whole apartment but which housed an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a full-on fireplace complete with stone hearth. It was a pretty chilly night, as LA nights go, and the fire definitely seemed inviting.

Cameron pulled up two chairs around the fire, keeping a respectable distance between us, and we continued the witty banter from our Tinder messaging. One beer turned into two, two turned into three, and he still hadn't made a move. "Maybe he just wanted to hang out and talk," I thought. Yeah, our chairs had been getting closer with each beer we opened, but there was no action.

Then we went into the kitchen to grab our fourth beer. As Cameron opened it, I leaned casually against the sink, laughing at a silly joke he told, my inner monologue still saying,

"COME ON ALREADY. ARE YOU GOING TO KISS ME OR WHAT!?"

And then, all of a sudden, Cameron leaned in and kissed me.

BOOM. (That's the sound of the fireworks that were exploding in my chest.) Cameron grabbed me around the waist, pressed me up against the sink, and we started making out. I'm not sure how long the kissing lasted, but I do know that at some point I leaned back to catch my breath and asked, "So, are we gonna go swimming?" He led me outside and we slipped into the pool, where we swam and kissed and swam and kissed and swam some more. Then, we retired to his bedroom, falling onto the bed in a tangle of limbs.

And, even though I actually despise sleeping over at someone's place, I slept over — mainly because getting TO Bel Air was so difficult that I was worried an Uber would never find me in the dark at 3am.

In the morning light, Cameron seemed the same as he had in the late hours of the evening before. Kind eyes, slightly scruffy, average build. We shared some awkward conversation over a cup of coffee while I waited for my Uber to arrive. Cameron walked me to the door, kissed me goodbye, and I wondered — is that it? Was this just a hookup? Would I ever hear from him again?

Much to my surprise, Cameron texted me an hour later.

Cameron: "I had a great time last night. I definitely want to see you again."
Me: "Yeah, maybe sometime this week or next weekend?"
Cameron: "Sounds good to me."

We spent the next few days texting a LOT. That Friday night, I met him at a bar for drinks and then went back to his place. It seemed so easy, so effortless. Maybe I'd swiped my way into a relationship without even trying, I mused.

And so we carried on for a few months this way — texting during the week, meeting up during the weekend. Occasionally we'd meet up during the week, too, but those times were few and far between. And we didn't really ever GO anywhere — it pretty quickly turned into a friends with benefits situation (AKA FWB, which I subsequently found that the guys on Tinder sure do love asking if you're cool with right off the bat). We'd sleep together, we'd talk and laugh for an hour or so, Cameron would make some empty promises that were never actually carried out — one of which being him asking me for help going shopping and picking out a new wardrobe, which never came to pass when I texted him about it later.

Three months in, I was starting to wonder whether we'd ever progress past this, or if I should just end things. I went to his place one night, we kissed goodbye, I left. Two days later, I texted him to say hello, and got quite the surprising text back.

Cameron: "Sorry, I just started seeing someone, so I can't talk to you anymore. It was fun while it lasted!!"
Me [to myself, not actually texting back yet]: "WHAT THE ACTUAL F*CK?!"

This text just felt so cavalier, so tossed off, so insensitive. Had all the times we'd slept together and spent time together really meant so little to Cameron that he could send me this text and just move on? I sat there, stunned, reading and rereading those words, having no idea what to actually say back or if I even SHOULD say anything back. Finally, I knew I had to say SOMETHING.

"Okay, wow. I really didn't expect that since we just slept together two days ago. It would have been nice if you at least had the decency to tell me that in person — or just not sleep with me at all when you were obviously about to get serious with someone else. Thanks a lot."

Predictably, there was no response. I've come to find that these men usually don't like to be told they're wrong, and if you call them out on it, they just say nothing rather than at least apologizing or taking responsibility for their actions.

Three years after Cameron and I met, I thought we were done for good. And then I received this.

Let's just say I blocked him after that and haven't heard from him since. Also, he was engaged to that girl he stopped seeing me for when he sent that.

So, for now, I will continue to swipe in the hope that, one of these days, a better man will swipe back on me. He may even have a nicer pool.

Plus, with its beautiful matte glass bottle and holographic lettering, the packaging is just undeniably chic. This is a must in my morning skincare routine!

I've been using this serum for years. I quite literally cannot live without it. I use a dropper full of it every morning before applying the rest of my skincare products, and my skin is always super soft and smooth! Ah, Mario Badescu. I've been a longtime fan of this brand, dating all the way back to the early 2000s when I used to visit their skincare spa in New York. I've only had good experiences with their products, and this serum is no different! I love that it's formulated with everything from Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 to hyaluronic acid and aloe vera, so my skin is plumped, nourished and soothed simultaneously. I actually like to use it on my neck and décolletage, and I've definitely noticed a decrease in the appearance of wrinkles when I do!

Oh, Herbivore Botanicals. How I've fallen in love with you over the years. And when I tell you that this serum is EV-ERY-THING, I'm not exaggerating. This is the lightweight, non-sticky serum I reach for when I need a little extra hydration and bounciness in my skin — and with one simple dropper full, my skin is unbelievably happy. The inclusion of tremella mushroom — an alternative to hyaluronic acid — helps skin retain moisture. Plus, it's pink! This serum is always, always on my vanity. This is the newest serum to come into my life, and has quickly become a skincare routine staple. As if the purple bottle weren't enough, the milky white formula inside does a ton of skincare heavy lifting (without actually feeling heavy on your skin, of course). It's packed with hyaluronic acid, meadowfoam seed oil and a natural fruit complex of watermelon, apple and lentil extracts to leave skin looking and feeling soft, silky and hydrated beyond belief. I Just Found the Absolute Best Way to Pack Every Travel-Sized Product (Hint: It's These Refillable Magnetic Containers from Cadence)

Is that cool or what?!

The Cadence Capsule System comes in packs of 6 ($84) or 12 ($168). You choose the colors, tiles and labels (either words or cute icons) of each container, and you can mix and match! I selected three each of Lavender and Charcoal, and decided to use them for my beauty and skincare routine.

While I was pretty set on my color choices — honestly, they just spoke to me! — it was definitely difficult for me to choose the labels for each of my capsules. I varied between words and icons, but ultimately chose words because, well, I'm a writer and I like words. (Very scientific reason, I know.) However, the icons are so cute that now I want another set with different colors and only icons! Such is the magic of Cadence.

One thing to consider is that you can use these capsules for more than just products. They're perfect for carting travel-sized needs of pills and medicines, too. I've actually been using one of my Charcoal capsules for my aspirin when I'm doing long days at Disneyland and need to alleviate the pressure in my ankle. The single capsule is perfectly sized for even the smallest purse, and holds at least a few doses of medication depending on the size.

Another fun fact: The capsules are magnetic! They stick to each other in fun arrays. Honestly, one of the most fun parts of owning these capsules is arranging them in different ways! The tops also stay on really well, so no leakage during traveling. (And they’re all quart size bag approved!)

The location seriously can’t be beat. It’s right across the street from the Harbor Blvd. park entrance — a 5-minute walk to security at most!

EASY CHECK-IN.

Check-in is easy and seamless. We arrived early in the morning and were able to do a pre-check in (since our rooms weren’t ready yet) and park our car there for the day. In and out in about 5 minutes!

AMPLE ROOM SIZE.

The rooms are large and easily accommodate 2-4 people. We got 2 adjoining rooms and had plenty of space.

SUPER COMFORTABLE BEDS.

Speaking of the rooms, the beds are SUPER comfortable! I was asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow and I didn’t wake up once during the night — and I don’t think that’s just because I walked 9 miles at the park! The mattresses are just the right combo of soft and firm to give you an excellent night’s sleep.

AMAZING EXTRAS.

The hotel has fantastic little extras, like refreshing infused water in the hotel lobby that they change up daily — the flavors during our stay were watermelon and lemon.
