Tips for Hourglass Body Shape

Good to wear :

Because this shape tends to have larger breast always make sure to wear bra that offers good support. The right bra can make a big difference when it comes to enhancing this figure.

Tops with V necks or scooped necklines will lengthen hourglass body. Halter tops are great as they show off the shapely shoulders. To emphasize the waist, wrap around tops are also great. Add an accent to the curve without adding size to your hips and shoulders. will help draw some attention.

The hourglass can wear any color, but darker fabrics will help this type appear slimmer. Select small dots or patterns for a softer slimmer look.

When looking for jackets, keep them simple. They can be either short or long, just make sure that they are well cut, fitted and nipped at the waist to show it off.

Choose jeans that are made of stretch denim, these will hug the curves and give a smooth fit at the waistline and hips. Look for jeans that are cut with larger hips and a smaller waist. Another option is jeans with slightly flared, or have a wide leg, this will balance out the hips. Mid-rise jeans are the way to go, especially for those who are carrying some extra weight in the tummy, but low-rise jeans work great for as well!

When looking for skirts, ¾ length or full length with a long slit or crease in the front will give a taller, thinner and sexier impression.

Bad to wear:

First on the list of things to stay away from is anything that hides the beautiful curves and turns the body into a shapeless line. Avoid pants and tops that are too baggy, these will only show a frumpy look.

For skirts, jeans, and jackets: stay away from straight lines. Skirts that are to short will only make hourglass type look round and shorten.

Keep away from tops that have large prints, checks, and stripes, and blouses with ruffles and lots of details around the bust area, this will only hide the great curves and make the figure look larger and out of proportion.

Wedding gown

Good to wear:

A strapless or off-the-shoulder gown is just right. When shopping for a strapless gown, lean towards the one-piece gowns instead of two-piece gowns. A two-piece gown can result in a “choppy” look, splitting you into two figures.

Bad to wear:

Silhouette: Empire, Mermaid, Sheath

An empire silhouette, with its high waistline, creates an un-proportional look. Also, avoid shapes such as sheath or mermaid shape as their body contouring lines tend to emphasize the wrong areas.

Avoid heavily beaded dresses that can tend to make the bride appear heavier.
Bias-cut and straight designs are not best for hourglass figures. They will usually pull the eye to areas of the body that you want to minimize. These types of dresses are better suited for tall women.

Swimwear

Tips for Pear Body Shape

Good to wear:

For this shape, it is good to wear something that can draw attention to the upper part of the body. Wide necklines should be a choice, such as a boat, scoop, square or halter which give widen effect to shoulders.

It is recommended to wear an under-wire or molded bras and semi-fitted, tailored tops because pear shape looks great with any shirts that are not too loose or too tight.

Details on top will show off your upper and take all eyes up to it, and belt accessories will help define the waistline and slimmer the look.

Puffy sleeves and tops that hug the shoulders or ones with wide-set straps will help to visually widen the chest and shoulders.

In choosing a jacket or blazer, short is the better. In this case, short meaning those which fall slightly above or at waist level.

For the bottom, mid-rise to lower rise style would be excellent for disguising the size of the hips and bottoms. Wide-legged pants and deep dark colors are suggested for a sleek slimmer look.

Pear shape should wear pants with the same stitched color as the fabric’s color. Simple plain pocket at the back, better in large size, can give smaller effect to the bottom part.

Straight leg jeans that fall from the hips make the leg-line of the pear shape appear longer, and boot-cut jeans can offset that extra width around the hips.

For the skirt, the best material to conceal the area around hips and thighs is flowing fabrics in a straight a-line style.

A slightly flared skirt or even ball gown style is also ideal because it flatters the waistline and shows up the bust as well as hiding the larger hips.

Play with light color at top and dark color at the bottom can help balance the shape.

Bad to wear:

Pear shape should stay away from body-hugging tight skirts. This will only show every bump and curve.

Bold patterns, large checks, and light colors are not recommended for below the waist. In addition, pleated or gathered fabric at the waist is not suggested as this will accentuate the broader hips.

Do not wear jackets or blazer that finish at the widest part of the hips.

Back Pockets with too many details, embellishment or decoration should be avoided as well as bulky side pockets. This will only draw the eyes right to the problem area where the bottom part look rounder and the thighs look smaller.

Narrow skinny jeans with tapered legs will only enhance the wideness of your hips, thighs, and seat, so as the stretch fabrics or baggy.

The tighter the jeans, the more it will accentuate the curves, and in this case, that is not at desirable effect. Stretch jeans will make the bottom half look heavier.
High-waisted shapeless pants and skirt also make the bottom part look larger.

Wedding Gown

Neckline: Halter, Strapless, V-Neck, Off-the-Shoulder, Scoop

Strapless corset-style combine with an A-line skirt looks great for a pear shape. Another style would be halter and ball gown. Decorations (including jewelry) in the top can add volume to the bust.

Also, consider an Off-the-Should or scoop with an A-line. You'll find that these styles can draw attention to your upper half and bring balance.

This bride should avoid any type of body-hugging gown, full skirts, or cuts that make the upper body appear even smaller or the lower body larger.

Sleek shoes with a thinner heel will work better visually rather than clunky footwear.

Neckline: V-Neck

Avoid styles that contour to the shape of pear bodies such as Sheath and Mermaid. V-neck tends to draw attention towards the chest and hips.

Swimwear

The pear shape is great with a separate swimsuit.
A long lined tankini in a lighter, brighter shade or bold print can be an alternative. This can be worn as a swim top, or as a halter top that can be worn anywhere.

Add some padding or a demi-bra style (with underwire) to make the bust appears larger.
Another great item is the suit with a bubble skirt or shorts.

The bubble skirt has a low waist that helps show off the waist as the best features while camouflaging the hips and thighs.

Good to wear:

The rectangle shape is almost like a ruler shape. People with this body type need to wear something that can create a curvy appearance to enhance their femininity and draw focus to their great legs and thighs.

Choose a top that has a strong or wide shoulder; a peasant blouse or Empire dress that creates a shape on top. Wearing surplice or wrap tops with a scooped or V- neckline will also emphasize the bust and draw attention to the face. Find bras with extra padding and underwire to make the breast appear larger.

Add a belt to pull the eye inward and define the waist. A drop waist top with detailing or belting at the hip will also add volume below the waist. Look for jackets that have a cinched waist, or bias cut as these will look great on a rectangle. Jackets that flare out from the waist will create instant hips. Tops that are fitted and go in at the waist will help give the appearance of a curvier figure.

Pleated skirts or low rise pants and skinny jeans accentuate the hips. Choose skirts that have a dropped waist or pencil, a-lined, and flared skirts that gather at the waist. Wear the same color on top and bottom with a contrasting color in the middle.

Look for jeans that hug and lift the bottom part of the body. Smaller back pockets that are spread far apart will help the small bottom look fuller. If they have flaps on them, this is even better, as this adds some bulk to it.

Jeans with lighter fades on the thighs will help give them shape. Another choice is low-rise and that is a straight fit from the hip to the knee with a slight flare at the end. A contoured waistband helps create curves too.

Bad to wear:

For sure, stay away from vertical patterns and lines, these will tend to create a thin and lanky appearance. Clinging and tightly fitted blouses are not good choices either.
Short cropped jackets that end at the waistline and loose garments should be avoided as those do not help create the curves.

Stay away from skirts, jeans, and pants that are high waisted and straight cut jeans because they will only emphasize your straight figure.

Wedding

Good to wear:

Silhouette: Full skirt, Ball gown, A-line or Princess, Empire waist
Neckline: Jewel, portrait, Sabrina, bateau

Go with a beaded neckline or bodice. The empire style dress (a raised waistline, sometimes right below the bust) can also give the appearance of a fuller chest and add some extra definition and shape. Another option to create the illusion of curves is to draw attention to the waist part.

To do this try a ball gown (full skirt, form-fitting bodice) as this will draw attention to the waistline and give a curvier look. A ruched or embellished waistline is also a nice choice. Ornaments, belts, wraps, darts, and ribbons are just a few examples of waistline embellishment.

Fuller sleeves are yet another way to add curves, and a dress with detailing and patterns can help to break up the straight body line.

Bad to wear:

Neckline: v-neckline, Queen Anne
The square figured bride should avoid sheath or clingy dresses that contribute nothing to creating the illusion of curves.

Swimwear

Look for swimsuits that have a form-fitting waist and a soft cup bra. Two pieces do just that and make rectangle appear a little curvier. Wear a top with some padding to increase the bust size. Choose solid bold colors and plunging neckline to make the bust and butt stand out.

Diagonal lines can do much the same. Stay away from stripes. A one-piece swimsuit with bold bright color in overall and darker color only in the waistline part is a good choice. This will make the waist appear smaller.

Another great look is the tank style suits or tankini. These will accent the midline that draws attention to the smallest part of the body. Avoid those string bikinis. Belted bottoms will look great on this body type as will bandeau tops.

Good to wear:

To balance the appearance of apple type is by giving slimmer look to shoulder and waist. Attention should be drawn to the best part which usually the bust and legs. Simple design and style are always the best for this type.

Apple body type is great in wrap around tops that are not too tight. V-neckline can be chosen to pull away attention from the shoulder part.

Don’t forget to use a support bra to enhance the figure. Bring up the waistline by wearing an empire waist.

Empire waist can disguise width around the midsection.
Tank top is great to wear with a jacket or camisole. Choose those which fall through mid-thigh.

Shoulder pads will only make the shoulders look bigger, so as puffy sleeves to upper arms. Bare shoulder, however, is also not a very good idea.

The too baggy top is not a great option. Bold pattern, horizontal line, large check, and light color, they all will add width to the torso and thus should be avoided. Decoration in up front will not work so well with a big tummy.

Do not wear bottoms that are too tight because the top will appear bigger when your bottom looks slimmer. Dark jeans and tapered leg make hips look small and distract the balance between your top and bottom.

With V-neckline, the top body can appear less-round and flatter the full bust. To balance with the top, the fuller skirt will surely do a nice job. An empire waist is recommended to draw attention away from a heavy top.

Apple bodies should avoid any necklines that accentuate the broad shoulders such as halter, heavily decorated, off-the-shoulder, and boat necklines.

Swimwear

Unlike the wedding gown, the halter neck is suggested for the swimwear as it can give enough support to the full breast. Wear underwire cups and thick straps to help to move conveniently with larger bust supported.

Strapless bandeau top will not give enough coverage to full bust and better avoided.
The low cut top is not recommended because it will show off the waist which usually is not so flat.

Color choice is the same as for top is solid dark and bottom lighter with print,

Skirtini can balance the hips and top and can be an adjustment on the level of lower high option.

You might have heard the suggestion of wearing something black. Nobody would deny that black can give a slimmer appearance. But be careful with the fabric.
Thick fabric sometimes shows the contrary. And ‘too tight’ may expose all areas which are supposed to be hidden.

The fact is a lot of people feel sexy when they are wearing black. Nevertheless, some people also think that black is so boring and gloomy. Thus, my suggestion is not to wear black every day as if you are a desperate person who is just having a funeral.

What most people not aware of is plus size can also look chic and stylish in color.
Choose a flattering color for your skin. Large bold print or bold patterns are great, so as vertical lines. If you are not confident enough with colors, combine them with black.

Usually, the simple design is good to avoid the bulky and frumpy look. If you like details though, do not choose ruffles, frills, thick pockets or whatever accessories that can make you look bigger.

I need 5 dresses in lime color for my daughter's court (girls) for her Quinceañera. I ordered one dress as a "test". My daughter and the girls love it. The perfect color! The material doesn't look cheap like other reviews have stated. My mother's best friend is a retired seamstress, and she recognized the fabric right away... I can't remember exactly, but if I'm not mistaken she mentioned something about a combination of taffeta and China silk... But I might be wrong. So, the dress passed the test, and I'll be ordering the other 4 dresses as soon as I get the girls' sizes. I got the x-small for my niece, and it was a perfect fit.

Ball Gown Skirt

Nothing can suit almost all body types than a ball gown skirt. It is very flattering because it creates an elegant but traditional classy approach.

This skirt is recommended to pear shape and broad shoulder body type to help balance the body’s general look by detracting negative attention either from lower body part (for pear shape) or upper body part (for broad shoulder and full bust shape).

This ball gown skirt also helps give waist distinction for full figure.

Slim brides are suggested to wear this ball gown skirt if they want to add some figure on their body. However, people who already have curves like hourglass type or petite body type would also want to consider this ball gown skirt as it is never out of date anyway.

A-Line Skirt

Another skirt that perfect for all shapes and sizes is an A-line skirt. Those who love the elegant look in simplicity style should definitely fall for this skirt.

A-line can be slightly slender and narrow or even wider, requiring a hoop. The rule is, if you have larger hips, mostly in pear shape body, you need a wider base of the skirt to create an illusion of tall and slim at the same time. The too-narrow skirt will only draw unnecessary attention to your wider hips.

This A-line is also good for those with the short-waisted body because it can add height to the body. It is much recommended for those with a distinct waistline.
A-line with strapless fitted bodice and waist is called princess gown. This gown only looks great on full bust people.

Empire Line Skirt

The skirt starts above the waist, just below the bust, and is not as full as a ball gown or has an A-shape.
Empire line is suitable for those who have a slim figure with a small bust and not to define the waistline.

It is not recommended for hourglass and pear-shaped type.

Fish Tail & Mermaid Skirt

Both fishtail and mermaid is kind of skirt that fitted at the waist and hips then flares out delicately at the bottom. The different is, in mermaid, it only flares out from knee downward.

Meanwhile, the fishtail is the mermaid style with an extension train at the bottom back of the skirt. Mermaid and fishtail often have a diagonal cut which makes it looks elegant.

This skirt is for people who want to accentuate their curvaceous figure of the back and hips. Hourglass type will certainly look sexy in this kind of skirt.

However petite, thick or short-waisted is not recommended to try on this skirt.

Column / Straight Skirt

Column or straight skirt is absolutely a fashionable style for modern women who want a chic look. It is highly recommended for tall, slim or petite body and also looks great in an hourglass.

Sheath Skirt

Almost similar to a column or straight is sheath skirt. This sheath is very classy and elegant. It is almost like a column but sheath skirt is simply fitted at the hips and falls straight down to the floor. People with flat stomach will totally turn up amazing for this skirt.

The sheath can have a wrap around in the waist part and this attachment appears like a train. With an attachment like that, the sheath looks almost similar to the princess line skirt.
