I found this awesome organization by the name of Earthship that is doing an amazing job helping Haitians rebuilding their country. They are able to build houses and water supplies with the things that are thrown away on the street as garbage. That shows it’s not about what have but what we do with what we have. It’s all about creativity.

What’s remarkable about this is the fact that they are empowering Haitians to be self-sufficient so that they can rebuild their homeland after the earthquake. I always believe in empowerment. Education is the key. It doesn’t matter how much foods and supplies we fly into the country. At the end of the day, we have to ask, “Will they be able to make it after the helpers leave?”

I congratulate Earthship for a job well done. I hope many more organizations follow their leads. Here’s their own statement about this:

“We do not want people to become dependent on products that we make or any country makes. We want people to be empowered by the ability to create sustenance for themselves, and in doing so, create employment, jobs and a mini-economy. An entire method that is independent of corporations, largely independent of oil and independent of politics.” http://www.earthship.com/disaster-relief

Wow! The remake of the song we are the world. America’s top musicians and singers came together to sing we are the world in order to raise money to help Haiti! What a powerful video! What a powerful moment!

This video is so moving! I’m indeed very thankful for the generosity and kindness of these powerful men and women who came together with one goal and vision to help the Haitian people… To help rebuild Haiti. As I’m writing this, I’m trying to fight back tears. And I don’t mean just tears of sadness. They are also tears of joy! All of this is shows we are one race… One people. We are humanity regardless of what we look like and what we believe in.

We may have many differences. But at the end of the day, when the ship we are traveling in is sinking, we all come together to save the ship and in the process save the world! Enjoy this video!

Just three weeks after the earthquake in Haiti in February 2010, the city Les Cayes was flooded. The flood was due to only 30 minutes of rainfall. Based on my conversation with people in Les Cayes, the flood caused some major devastation.

The only hospital in the city of Les Cayes was flooded. The a hospital was already in a very bad shape even before the earthquake. After the earthquake thousands flee to Les Cayes seeking refuge. As a result, the hospital is full over capacity.

Here’s a video from youtube that will give you an idea of what I am describing here:

One man took that video to share with CNN www.ireport.com. The situation in Haiti is by far not over. I’m constantly in contact with people on the ground.

People are still dying. So many sick people are not being treated for lack of personnel and medical supplies. There’s a huge scarcity of foods and basic necessities. Of course everyday planes are landing with nurses and doctors. But they are not landing fast enough. The demand is just way too high.Having said that, I’m soooooooo grateful for all the efforts and assistance we’ve been getting. My heart overflows with gratitude. Thank you for so much for your help, concerns, and prayers.

Doctors are using machetes, knives, and whatever they can find to amputate legs and arms in order to save lives. Food prices went up as much as 300%! Things were already bad before the earthquake.

My village is now over crowded with an influx of people that had left years ago. Now they are coming back to where their umbilical

chord was buried. (That’s a big tradition in my village. They sometimes plant a coconut tree on that location.)I just pray the government of Haiti use the money they receive to help the people that really need help instead of rerouting it to some bank account in the US or switzerland.

Thank God the world is keeping an eye to make sure the money is accounted for. I’m done crying–I think. Now, I’m doing everything I can to head

down to Haiti to help. It’s hard to enter the country at this time. But I’m in contact with friends and family on the ground. The situation is really gut wrenching.

By the way, I just came back from Ohio. I was interviewed for Pastor Rod Parsley’s Breakthrough show. See it this week on: Trinity Broadcasting TBN :

Broken Physically But We Are Together Spiritually

There are many things I don’t know in life. But there’s one thing I know for sure. Haitians are patient and resilient! They are persistent! They are tough at heart! They are a courageous people.

I am confident they will get through this. They come from the same bloodline that gave us Toussaint Louverture, Jean Jacques Dessaline, and Henry Petion. Those are powerful men that led the fight against slavery to catapult the French army, led the Haitians to freedom and become the first independent black republic in the world.

I am not saying this to brag or boast. It’s neither the time nor the place for this. I am only saying it to point out the resolve of the Haitian people.

Our struggles as a people are not new to us. We’ve struggling since the slavery days. We often express our struggles through our music and literature.

A series of natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods battered the nation for many consecutive years. It seems as though we never fully recover from our misfortunes. But as a reluctant people, we continue to stand steadfast and press on in spite of our plights.

We have endured terrible blows in the past. But we have always stood in the face of adversities and win. There’s no reason why we can’t do it one more time. We will win this battle. As I always say, “No Condition is Permanent!”

As soon as I can stop my tears and keep my emotions under control, I am prepared to do my part. I am prepared to join forces with the people on the ground to do anything I can. I call on every Haitian living outside of the country to share a common vision for Haiti. Let us each do something—anything—to help rebuild our country.

Let’s not seat idle and watch the world as they come to our rescue. This is our opportunity. This is our time. This is our moment. And the Hatians in Haiti are counting on their brothers and sisters.

I know you are crying. I know you probably lost a friend or a family member. Now is the time to show the people in Haiti our strengths instead of our weaknesses.

Their Homes In Haiti Are Their Pride & Dream… Now They Are Gone

To the majority of Haitians, a home is their Haitian Dream. It’s their pride. When I was a poor kid, I remember how most Haitians build their homes in my neighborhood. They did it just like the birds—twig by twig.

It would often take years to finally finish building a home. Patiently they would lay down a few cement blocks. Then they would work laboriously to make some money to lay down just a few more. Some pray and wait for their family abroad to send a few dollars to buy a door or window.Haitians inherently love to own things without being in debt. They are owners. That’s why most of us often fight the credit system here in America when we first arrive. I remember saying, “I will never buy anything on credit here.” I guest I didn’t know any better.

It’s not unusual for someone to spend 10 or 30 years building a house. Some even die and never see its completion. But one can say that it doesn’t really matter. Their dreams are never theirs alone. They are also that of their children.

Recently during a visit to Haiti, a man sat me down and explained to me what it takes to accomplish anything in life. He said, “You have to start small with what you have. Don’t wait for the large sum to arrive before you start living your dream. Take one step at a time. But don’t give up. That’s how we build our

homes here. As long as you have any kind of money coming in, you can accomplish anything. The secret to success are two words: discipline and patience.”

He showed me his home. I was stunned! I could not believe what I saw. The house was spectacular! The question I kept asking myself is, “How did he do it?” But then I remember some Haitian ladies here in America working in housekeeping positions and raising kids as single parents. They still manage to buy a home here and build one in Haiti.

I said all of this to make a point. I don’t know how most Haitians will ever be able to rebuild their homes or dreams. Times have changed. Building materials are exorbitantly high. There are virtually no jobs in the country.

The devastating earthquake that struck my beloved country Haiti killed thousands. Every second, minute and hour we wait fearfully for the bad news. I’m still trying to locate some of my family members.

It’s absolutely horrible to watch so many of my country men and women pressed against chunks of concrete begging, crying, and yelling for someone to save their lives. And there’s nothing I can do to help. Many of them died on the spot. Many are still trapped with a breath in them. I believe in miracles. And yes, there will be many in the next few days. My heart bleeds. I spend hours thinking about this tragedy. I have lots of questions running through my head. But I don’t know if I will ever get the answers.

I am still trying to reach my aunt and cousins down in Port-Au-Prince. I pray they are okay. Some of my friends have their entire family members in the city buried under the roof of fallen houses. They have not been able to reach anyone.

I am so thankful for so many good friends, and colleagues that called to check on me. That means a lot to me. Words cannot describe my gratitude. If you called, emailed, or commented on my blog, a heartfelt thank you to you!

I also want to thank the people from around the world especially the Americans for their quick responses. Haiti needs a lot of help. And many countries are now stepping forward to make a difference. On that front, I am relieved to know we can count on our fellow human beings.
