The microwave is one of those appliances that is easy to forget to clean. Since the door is almost always closed the nastiness that lurks inside can go unnoticed for quite some time. Luckily the microwave can be cleaned in about 5 minutes with only plain water and very minimal effort. Even if your microwave is like mine with gross caked on food seemingly baked into the walls I promise you this will only take 5 minutes.

Take a microwave safe bowl and fill it with water. Add a dash of vinegar. Set it in inside and turn the microwave on for 5 minutes. The water will turn to steam and the steam will soften up all the gunk. The vinegar helps to absorb the smells.

While it’s cooking give the outside a quick wipe down and then go do something else for 4 more minutes until it’s done. You can let the microwave sit for a few more minutes to let the steam penetrate even more if you like.
Be really careful when opening the microwave and taking the bowl out. The water will be extremely hot. Wipe down the walls with a damp cloth and remove the plate from the inside. Rinse it in the sink with hot soapy water. Put the plate back in and voila, a nice squeaky clean microwave ready for the next person to cook something and forget to cover it!

How many cloth diapers will you need?

First, you’ll have to decide how often you want to do laundry. If you can wash every day then you don’t need as many diapers. Most people will tell you to wash every other day – this keeps the stink factor to a minimum. I wouldn’t ever try to push it past every 3 days unless it was really necessary.

If you are planning to start with a newborn you’ll probably need about 36 diapers. Newborns pee and poop all the time. Most go through about 12 diapers per day so you’ll need at least 24 and then some to wear while the laundry is going. Most one-size (OS) diapers don’t start to fit until 8 (more like 10) pounds so you’ll likely need specific diapers for the newborn stage unless you just want to use disposables until your baby fattens up a bit and fits in OS diapers.

Older babies go through about 6-10 diapers a day. Keep in mind that cloth diapers should be changed about every 2 hours during the day. There are heavy duty or pocket diapers that you can stuff with more absorbent materials (hemp doubler, etc) for nap times and overnight though. Another thing to think about – the smaller your stash of diapers is the more use each one will get. That means if you only have 20 diapers and they are washed every other day then each one will get washed over 150 times per year. So, don’t be mad at anyone if your diaper doesn’t last through 3 kids. I’d say 24 cloth diapers would get you through washing every other day or so; if you’re using covers/flats/pre-folds you’d need 6-8 covers and 24+ flats or pre-folds.

What else do you need?

Depending on the cloth diapering system that you choose you may need things like:

Pins, Snappis, or Boingos: These are products that will hold the pre-folds, flats, or fitted on your baby.

Wet bags: These are waterproof bags that come in a slew of different sizes – some that you can carry with you in your diaper bag, some that hang off a doorknob or your changing table. Basically, it’s a bag to hold your dirty diapers until wash day. And, on wash day turn it inside out and throw it in with your diapers.

Pail liners: These are waterproof bags that go inside your diaper pail to store your dirty diapers until wash day. On wash day, turn it inside out and wash it with your diapers. You’ll want 2 of these – that way when one is in the wash you’ll have the other to use.

Creams: Regular diaper creams (i.e. Desitin, A&D, other zinc containing creams) are NOT cloth diaper safe. I repeat, these creams are NOT cloth diaper safe. The whole purpose of these creams is to create a moisture barrier, so if you slab that on your baby and then put him in a cloth diaper it will coat your diaper and make it repel (read: LEAK). There are cloth diaper safe creams available like That’s BALM! BABY, CJ’s BUTTer, and the Grovia Magic Stick among others.

Cloth wipes: These are optional of course, but it makes good sense to use them. That way when you are done wiping up a mess you don’t have to fish the disposable wipe out and throw it in a separate trash can. You can cut up receiving blankets or use baby wash cloths as wipes if you’d like to save money.

I love how my 18-month-old is so excited about trying new foods. That being said her exploration is quite messy with food ending up on the floor, in her clothes and all over our table. To help make the dinner table a little neater, I have been using the Tidy Table Tray & Flexi Diner tray, a portable tray that helps transition toddlers from the high chair to the booster seat while keeping tables, floors and clothes clean.

How it works is simple – all you have to do is clip the tray to a table and then serve meals. This also includes an easy on/off insert for two in one use. The beauty of the tray is that it brings a baby to a table – and provides a lip, which ergonomically molds to a babies body so that food doesn’t not spill all over the place. Created by mompreneur Megan Streit-Wilson, the Tidy Table Tray & Flexi Diner tray is also BPA-free, easy to clean and is dishwasher safe to make the clean-up process quick and simple.

More Highlights of the Tidy Table Tray & Flexi Diner include:

Its unique design also helps keep tables, floors and clothes clean too;

Features interactive locations for plates, bowls, sippy cups, spoons and forks so that baby can learn to put things back in place;

The firm insert tray is easy to remove, eliminating the need for multiple trips when serving the meal and simplifying clean up;

A ground-breaking spill catch lip that ergonomically molds to a baby’s body and easily catches spills that fall between the child and the table.

Table surfaces, rims and legs also stay clean and dry, while the tray offers a large eating space and rounded rims to keep spills off the table.

It’s easy to use and attaches to most tables via a rubber coated clip, keeping it securely locked in place.

It is also BPA free, phthalate free and dishwasher safe.

Here’s a freebie to start the New Year! FREE Kindle Book:The Well-Lived Laugh: Designing a Life that Keeps You Smiling.

Book Description
Publication Date: August 1, 2012

Ladies, a little perspective can change everything—and owning your own perspective (with a good dose of humor) is what The Well-Lived Laugh is all about. Brand-new from humor writer Rachel St. John-Gilbert (author of Wake Up Laughing and Laugh Yourself to Sleep), The Well-Lived Laugh: Designing a Life that Keeps You Smiling offers a quirky look at life’s crazy-making pressures—body image, relationships, social networking, the food police—and encouragement to develop your own unique perspective to help eliminate those pressures. Through her hilarious observations, St. John-Gilbert will help you embrace the beauty in life that comes through each experience, whether planned or not.

Crying is a physiological process in the life of a baby. All normal babies cry to communicate with others. Since they can’t express their feelings in words crying is the only way for communication. If any uncomfortable feeling comes they simply cry. Normally babies cry in situations like hunger, wetting, too much heat or cold, tight clothes, pain etc. Some kids need the presence of somebody otherwise they will cry. Crying without any cause is habitual in some babies. Even though crying is considered as normal it may worry the family members, Since the reasons for crying ranges from simple causes to serious causes it should not be ignored and hence the exact cause has to be identified and managed accordingly.

The following are some points which should be considered while dealing with a crying baby.

1. It is dangerous to shake the baby vigorously.

2. Tight clothes can cause irritation hence it should be removed.

5. Pat the babies back or stroke its head slowly and let it here your soothing sound.

6. If baby is hungry, feed it.

7. If the climate is cold cover the baby in a soft towel.

9. Take a music making doll and let the baby listen.

10. Try a pacifier.

11. If no response change the babies position.

12. Walk outdoors with the baby.

13. Put the baby on the cradle and rock gently.

14. If no response ask somebody to carry the baby.

Even after all these steps the baby goes on crying see for the following signs.
( Probable cause is given after every sign)

1. Press the babies abdomen gently, she may twist or resist you:—Colic

2. Pull the babies ear gently it may become worse or push your hands away:—Earache.

3. Feel the babies temperature with the back of your hands:–Fever due to any infection.

4. Examine the skin from head to foot:–Eruptive disease, nappy rash, measles, vesicles, allergy ect.

5. See the nose for any discharge:–Coryza.

6. Move the head gently to feel any neck stiffness:–Meningitis, head injury etc.

7. Keep your ear near the babies chest to hear any rattling sound:–Increased mucus in wind pipes.
(pneumonia, bronchitis, asthmatic bronchitis etc)

8. Examine the anal orifice:–Anal erosion,rectal polyp,crawling of worms.

9. Examine the genitalia:–Any discharge or erosion.

During infancy.
—————

cleanliness is essential to the infant’s health. The principal points to which especial attention must be paid by the parent for this purpose are the following:

At first the infant should be washed daily with warm water; and a bath every night, for the purpose of thoroughly cleaning the body, it is highly necessary. To bathe a delicate infant of a few days or even weeks old in cold water with a view “to harden” the constitution (as it is called), is the most effectual way to undermine its health and entail future disease. By degrees, however, the water with which it is sponged in the morning should be made tepid, the evening bath being continued warm enough to be grateful to the feelings.

A few months having passed by, the temperature of the water may be gradually lowered until cold is employed, with which it may be either sponged or even plunged into it, every morning during summer. If plunged into cold water, however, it must be kept in but a minute; for at this period, especially, the impression of cold continued for any considerable time depresses the vital energies, and prevents that healthy glow on the surface which usually follows the momentary and brief action of cold, and upon which its usefulness depends. With some children, indeed, there is such extreme delicacy and deficient reaction as to render the cold bath hazardous; no warm glow over the surface takes place when its use inevitably does harm: its effects, therefore, must be carefully watched.

The surface of the skin should always be carefully and thoroughly rubbed dry with flannel, indeed, more than dry, for the skin should be warmed and stimulated by the assiduous gentle friction made use of. For this process of washing and drying must not be done languidly, but briskly and expeditiously; and will then be found to be one of the most effectual means of strengthening the infant. It is especially necessary carefully to dry the arm-pits, groins, and nates; and if the child is very fat, it will be well to dust over these parts with hair-powder or starch: this prevents excoriations and sores, which are frequently very troublesome. Soap is only required to those parts of the body which are exposed to the reception of dirt.

During childhood.
—————-

When this period arrives, or shortly after, bathing is but too frequently left off; the hands and face of the child are kept clean, and with this the nurse is satisfied; the daily ablution of the whole body, however, is still necessary, not only for the preservation of cleanliness, but because it promotes in a high degree the health of the child.

A child of a vigorous constitution and robust health, as he rises from his bed refreshed and active by his night’s repose, should be put into the shower-bath, or, if this excites and alarms him too much, must be sponged from head to foot with salt water. If the weather be very cold, the water may be made slightly tepid, but if his constitution will bear it, the water should be cold throughout the year. Then the body should be speedily dried, and hastily but well rubbed with a somewhat coarse towel, and the clothes put on without any unnecessary delay. This should be done every morning of the child’s life.

If such a child is at the sea-side, advantage should be taken of this circumstance, and sea bathing should be substituted. The best time is two or three hours after breakfast; but he must not be fatigued beforehand, for if so, the cold bath cannot be used without danger. Care must be taken that he does not remain in too long, as the animal heat will be lowered below the proper degree, which would be most injurious. In boys of a feeble constitution, great mischief is often produced in this way. It is a matter also of great consequence in bathing children that they should not be terrified by the immersion, and every precaution should be taken to prevent this. The healthy and robust boy, too, should early be taught to swim, whenever this is practicable, for it is attended with the most beneficial effects; it is a most invigorating exercise, and the cold bath thus becomes doubly serviceable.

If a child is of a delicate and strumous constitution, the cold bath during the summer is one of the best tonics that can be employed; and if living on the coast, sea-bathing will be found of singular benefit. The effects, however, of sea-bathing upon such a constitution must be particularly watched, for unless it is succeeded by a glow, a feeling of increased strength, and a keen appetite, it will do no good, and ought at once to be abandoned for the warm or tepid bath. The opinion that warm baths generally relax and weaken, is erroneous; for in this case, as in all cases when properly employed, they would give tone and vigor to the whole system; in fact, the tepid bath is to this child what the cold bath is to the more robust.

In conclusion: if the bath in any shape cannot from circumstances be obtained, then cold saltwater sponging must be used daily, and all the year round, so long as the proper reaction or glow follows its use; but when this is not the case, and this will generally occur, if the child is delicate and the weather cold, tepid vinegar and water, or tepid salt water, must be substituted.

Balancing a working life with looking after your children can be very hard and time consuming. Unfortunately, more and more of us are relying on two wages to keep up with mortgage and bill payments, and having one parent off to look after the children is just not an option for many people anymore. For some people, putting their children into nursery provides the solution, however some parents would much rather their children be brought up in a home environment. This is where finding a nanny can provide the perfect solution.

In big cities there is an abundance of childcare, and there are many nanny agencies just waiting to provide you with help for your children. But just how do you know that the agency you are looking at is legit, and will provide you with a nanny who will do the job well?

Nanny agencies will often have websites, which is your first port of call when trying to look for good childcare. However, no matter how good the website looks, talking first hand to people who have used the service is also very important. Making sure any potential nannies have the correct checks done on them is also important. Anyone who is working with children should have a full background check to make sure that their past is clean and that you therefore have nothing to worry about.

Word of mouth is often the best way to find childcare, especially in a big city where there are an abundance of people out there advertising help for your children. While trying to find a nannies can seem an overwhelming, there are plenty of people to get recommendations from and plenty of agencies to contact.
