Pilgrimage to Mickey: success!

I've pretty much believed it was a bit premature and silly to bring a young toddler to Disneyland/world. But when faced with our choices for outings this weekend, and rain in the forecast for the beach, we said "well...why not?" The decision was fortified by August's new and enthusiastic interest in Mickey Mouse (which we think may have started at daycare).

Last night we scoured the website, picked out a handful of toddler appropriate activities, mapped our driving route, and packed up the hats and sunblock. We headed out about 8 am this morning, aiming to get there by 10 am. By the time we parked, took the tram to ticketing, boarded the ferry and made it to the Magic Kingdom, it was probably 11 am. But no matter, we knew we'd only see a small portion of the park, and there's no pushing it with a 2-year-old in tow.

We walked down Main Street, saw the last part of the show with Mickey in front of the castle ("Mickey Mouse!"), then went in to a cafe in Tomorrow Land for an early lunch. By the time we finished, a parade was trotting by ("P'ade!...Mickey Go!"), which we watched for a minute from a distance before going to Fantasyland and Mickey's Toon Town (home to most of the toddler-appropriate stuff). We tried Mickey's PhilharMagic first (too loud and strange for a 2-year-old...the day's misstep), then Small World (absolutely August's speed). From there it was Pooh's Playful Spot for some running around time, then Toontown Hall of Fame, Mickey's Judges Tent to meet the mouse himself, and Minnie too (which we feared would scare August, but she absolutely loved it). Then we rode the Disney World train around the park and realized that it was naptime. We headed into some Pinocchio-themed eatery, where we had some cool drinks and snacks while August conked out in her stroller for a good hour. Meanwhile, the afternoon monsoon had started, but that didn't stop Ray and I from taking turns running over to the Haunted Mansion (not quite as cool as I remembered it, but of course I was 12 the last time). Both soaking wet, we used the umbrella to shield a now awake August, and ran through giant puddles to get to only Must on the list for the day: Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor. Basically it was a comedy routine MCed by Mike Wazowski, which of course August didn't understand, but she loved seeing the characters "live" and clapping with the audience. I think it was the highlight of her day, followed by meeting Mickey and Minnie as a close second.

Since it was now almost 6 pm, we decided to try our luck on the Pirates of Caribbean, another favorite from my previous trip. While the rain was gone, there was no line, and Ray and I again took turns on the ride, while August had a snack and gleefully and inadvertently smeared peanut butter over her new Mickey doll.

Walked back to the main entrance, took the monorail to ticketing, tram to parking, and drove back up to Gainesville. Whew.

So the lesson we learned is: Yes! If you're in the vicinity, do Disney with a toddler, but set your schedule and expectations low for the day. Pick out only a few things to see, allow for nap/downtime at some nice air-conditioned eatery, and pick out one "big kid" ride to do on your own. Since we forgot snacks in the car, we were grateful for healthy choices like PB&J, apple slices, grapes and strawberry yogurt (though I fear a chicken nugget or two crept into our meals today).

All in all, it was a truly fantastic day, definitely worth the cost of the tickets...especially considering August giggled most of the way back to Gainesville.

Blu-ray review: Bolt

When boiled down to it’s elements Bolt is made of the same ingredients as Beverly Hills Chihuahua. The protagonist is a dog which has been ripped out of it’s comfort zone, the sidekick a reluctant and world weary ally, the plot surrounds the heros efforts to get back to it’s owners (in LA no less), and there is a strong motif of “finding your bark” running through both films.

But the difference is, Bolt works.

The story is well paced, the protagonists sympathetic, the comedy funny, and the tragedy poignant. Sure, it doesn’t break any molds as far as plot goes; but it’s a kids film, it doesn’t need to. It’s story of love lost and then regained, an archetypical tale that never goes stale.

To steal a synopsis from the mighty Wikipedia:

The film’s plot centers on a small white dog named Bolt who, having spent his entire life on the set of a television series, thinks that he has super powers. When he believes that his human, Penny, has been kidnapped, he sets out on a cross-country journey to “rescue” her.

The vocal acting was very good. I was particularly taken by Mark Walton as Rhino the hamster, but even have to give a grudging nod of respect to the normally excruciating Miley Cyrus who portrayed Penny, Bolt’s owner, excellently.

And the animation? Well I must admit that I approached the movie expecting something a little under par. Despite being a Disney film, Bolt did not have any input from Pixar studios and so I wasn’t anticipating anything overly spectacular. Other non Pixar CGI films include Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons which, while they were perfectly acceptable, didn’t really raise the bar as far as moving the genre of CGI forward.

But the animation in Bolt was spectacular. It could have something to do with the Blu-ray but blimey, the first ten minutes of the movie really took my breath away. it wasn’t so much the rendering of the character’s themselves (although they were great), but the backgrounds. Wonderfully realistic textures that meshed exquisitely with the main action. The cinematography was pretty damn good too. Visually the movie was very satisfying.

I’ve read a few negative reviews from my fellow Disney reviewers criticizing the movie for being overly melancholic and even a bit hypocritical (the villains of the piece being a large money driven movie studio, a bit like Disney in fact). To them I say a respectful pish and piffle. Bolt’s a great film, a bit sad in places true and there is a certain irony to it if you’re in a cynical enough mood. But it’s overwhelming message is that of doing the best you can with what you’ve got, and that seems a good enough thing to be teaching my kids to me.

The triumphant return of “It’s all Greek to me” Sunday

It’s been over a year since I retired my regular feature It’s all Greek to me Sunday so I thought it was about time I whipped it out again and slapped it back down on the table.

Here’s how it works. I’ve taken a short film synopsis from the listings page of a TV guide and fed it into Bable Fish, an online translating service. I then translated the synopsis from English into Greek, and then from Greek back into English. The resulting gobbledygook is posted below. Your task is to try and identify what movie the passage refers to.

Here goes:

Another fine mess

On Wednesday evening I was suddenly struck with flu like symptoms. I was tired, my muscles ached, I felt nauseous, I had a balled up feeling in my throat, and I couldn’t stop shivering. We took my temperature and it was high. Not throwing me in a bath of ice cubes high, but high enough not to be normal.

I rang the NHS direct swine flu helpline and went through a checklist of symptoms with them. Unlike my previous encounters with NHS direct it was a relatively worthwhile experience. There was a point when the pleasant and chatty nurse on the end of the phone described my muscle aches as being “a real killer” and we both had to pause for a while to ponder her amazingly poor choice of words; but all in all it was a reassuring and professional conversation.

Basically she told me it could be swine flu or it could be some other random viral illness. I was to isolate myself at home, pop paracetamol, and only emerge a day or two after the symptoms have subsided.

I must admit I did have some dark thoughts that night. Thoughts surrounding the possibility of infecting my children and hoping it would me that died rather than them. Evan worried me in particular. He’s not only under five but also has a history of breathing difficulties, both factors that place him squarely in the at risk of serious complications category.

In fact Evan had actually been running a temperature on Wednesday night, and had started complaining of feeling ill around the time I did. I had discussed this with the NHS nurse who advised to contact my GP if I was still concerned in the morning.

On Thursday I felt about the same, although the temperature and shivering was gone, possibly due to the paracetamol (Why are there no asprins in the jungle? Because the paracetamol). more importantly Evan was markedly better than he was previously, but we still shipped him off to Kerry’s parents rather than Nursery just in case.

Today being Friday I feel a little better again, although I certainly wouldn’t describe myself as 100%. And the report from the out-laws is that Evan is bright and breezy. To be honest I’ve had flu before and it felt a damn sight worse than this so I’ve either got a very mild case, or probably more likely something else entirely. If it hadn’t been for the media hysteria I’d have just struggled through.

I was supposed to be working this weekend but I’ve called in sick. I could probably push through it and go in if I really had to. But all the advice is not to do that and I often spend quite a bit of time in A&E and hospital wards and wouldn’t want to infect potentially vulnerable people (not to mention my colleagues). I do feel a bit guilty about it, if I don’t go in then some poor sod has to cover my shift, but never the less I think I’m probably acting appropriately.

So now I’m here at home alone for the weekend. Kerry and the kids had a couple of days away with her parents planned and as it doesn’t look like I’m dying we saw no reason why it shouldn’t go ahead. The novelty of having time to myself without any pressure to do anything wore off five minutes after they left however, and now I’m bouncing off the walls (albeit in a lackluster sickly sort of manner).

It probably hasn’t helped that I just watched a documentary about apocalyptic fiction we’d had recorded on Sky+. As much as I am a fan of 28 Days Later and Day of the Triffids et al, it’s probably not the wisest thing to be watching in a house on your own while you’re potentially suffering from an illness the tabloids have been screaming about for the past month or two. I keep looking out the window and half expecting a atomic mushroom or hoards of zombies rushing towards me.

Ah well. Time for another paracetamol, a pot noodle, and a marathon Laurel and Hardy session to cheer myself up I think. There’s nothing like watching two men try and push a piano up a set of stairs to keep thoughts of the end of the world at bay.

Hey all,

How's things with you? [insert lengthy pause here] Hmmm... Plenty going on in my head right now, but I've not yet got my brain around how to type it all up. I guess writing an entry once a week, pretty much every week means there will be some repetition and it's that that makes me stall. It's break the flow out of my head and out to the keyboard.

Thursday I was off to Chams (sorry, Nottingham Chameleons) for a bit of social. It was a lovely sunny evening and part of me wondered about setting the tables and chairs outside. Still, it was early on and in the UK, you never really know what the weather's going to do. Job done, I nipped upstairs to I get changed (I remembered my camera and to charge the batteries!): long summer top, leggings and wedges. It was those or the gladiators, but I think I'll be needing flats for the party next time. The flash isn't quite right and I think my camera is on it's last legs. Still, it's been faithful and perhaps it's time for retirement... and a damned good wipe program for the memory card too. :-)

Anyhoo, the evening was quiet. There was around half a dozen or so of us there: Tracey, Sandy, Yvonne, myself and a new lady called Andy. To be accurate three others turned up but disappeared outside for a chat for most of the evening. Andy turned up around 10ish and it was her first time to the group. She was - and quite understandably so - rather nervous. I suppose when you go to a group for so long or you go out as much as some of us do, it becomes second nature.

Sparkle

Talking of going out, part of the reason why it may have been so quiet is that it's Sparkle up in Manchester. I've not made the effort to go, mainly due to a lack of organisation on my part and family commitments. Part of me would be interested in going just so I can make up my own mind.

There's been praise, scorn and satire of the event. I wonder which of the three are closest to the truth? The cynic in me says satire, but I'd like that not to be the case. :-) I wonder if my lack of drive to go is that I'm lucky enough to get out regularly (from a tranny point of view). Last year I went to Harmony and I didn't really click with the event. The company, food and disco was very good, but it felt a little stayed in places. Perhaps I should have headed to the bar when the beauty contest started. Mmmm... beer :-)

Some people on-line and in real life (Ed: IRL?) have been saying that the next generation of trannys are making the most of the more accepting attitudes in society. I've heard it said that they don't need the support groups or organised events that the current wave do. As the old guard (Beaumont et al) don't seem to be relevant anymore (Ed: Don't sit on the fence, Lynn!) so perhaps the organised events, socials or support groups could one day go.

But... I don't buy that. Maybe some folk are happy to get on with it, but I think as long as we - we trannys have hang ups over who we are - so we'll have support groups in out of the way places to help people come to terms with who they are. It's not all bad news, but hey, it takes a while for that message to get through.

So, whatever you're up to this week: stay safe and enjoy. That's an order, private! :-)

Duchampian Snap (And Some Other Stuff...)

Sorry for taking so long with my latest post, but this past week, I've been suffering from one vicious mouth ulcer! It started off a week ago as a nasty toothache, and within a couple of days, it had evolved into a full-blown ulcer, causing the lower-left side of my face to swell up alarmingly! I looked like Marlon Brando in "The Godfather" - 'all these years you disrespect my family, and now you come to me for help'... Went to the dentist, who gave me antibiotics, along with instructions to return on Monday, and to go to the local A&E to get the swelling lanced if it got any bigger... Well, thankfully, that wasn't necessary, and my toothache has since vanished and the Brando-bulge gone down - still got a lump of pus along the left side of my jaw, though - you can see why I haven't felt like doing anything much lately...

That aside, let me begin by saying that no, I didn't attend Pride this year, nor did I go to any grassroots-anti-Pride picnic - after all the noise, it seems no-one could be bothered to organise anything! Motherfucking lazy-ass pseudo-radicals... On reflection, though, I'm pleased I didn't go to Pride, Priscilla-orthodoxy or not; Stephanie went, and according to her, the whole march, not to mention Trafalgar Square, where the rally took place, was so g*ddamn crowded that it was impossible to move! The Devil's own stress-department incarnate - why the hell doesn't Pride take place at Clapham Common like it used to?

Anyway, screw the outside world - I've a helluva lot to occupy me at present, and all from the comfort of my own duvet... Last week, I was delighted to receive a package from friend and artist nirbhao, containing the result of our recent collaboration - a chicken-shaped tile with my very own design painted on it! (Click here to see my original design and here to see the finished tile - wicked likeness, huh?) Nirbhao has created a whole bunch of these tiles as part of her "Party of Chickens" project - and the good news is you don't have to be as talented as me to take part! My big collaboration of the moment, however, is with dou_ble_you, a truly fabulous artist I've had the pleasure of working with before... Indiana Jones Five?

Those of you who occasionally cast a glance over to the mini-blog on my sidebar may have noticed I’ve been plugging a number of podcasts recently. Over the past few months Lee, my antipodean pop culture guru, has been churning out a very entertaining weekly(ish) podcast where he examines a particular facet of popular culture.

What’s more he’s been encouraging his readers to contribute by sending in their own audio musings. Never being one to pass up an opportunity to wax lyrical on topics I don’t have any pertinent knowledge or understanding of, I’ve been happily sticking my two pennies worth into the mix for a while now. For example check out:

I suppose I should put in a disclaimer that on the Turtles one I do actually give a rendition of the TMNT cartoon theme tune on the ukulele. A rendition that Lee has also seen fit to convert to a phone ringtone. Thanks for that Lee.

Anyhow, this weekend Lee will be tackling the rumors surrounding the possibility of a fifth Indiana Jones movie; namely asking what Lucas et al could do to redeem themselves and make, against the odds, a truly worthy fifth Indy movie.

It’s a topic close to many a heart. And Lee has asked his loyal subjects to spread the word to the masses that he want’s contributions. as the great man himself says:

Now I already have some ideas and seeing that George, Stephen and Harrison are frequent visitors here I thought you all might like to share your own thoughts in the off chance that they might pay attention to fans and not put universally stupid CGI gophers in the next film.

So please share your opinions and your ideas in the comments here or contact me if you don’t want anyone to know your super secret Indiana Jones plot ideas before the podcast. I also greedily accept your own recorded thoughts via emailed mp3 or wav files (contact me and I’ll send you the email to send them to).

Even if you don’t have any specific plot ideas why not throw out title ideas, if you manage to accurately predict the name of the next film years in advance just think what it will do to your love life! Studies have shown that accurately predicting the name of the next Indiana Jones or Star Wars film/show is what 78% of potential mates are most impressed by. That’s science people!

So get to it, I know I certainly will be.

In fact I’ve already recorded my own ukulele version of the Indiana Jones theme music. I just this minute played it to Kerry actually, and she was so overwhelmed by its brilliance that she had to leave the room in awed silence. You’ll have to listen to Lee’s podcast to hear it though.

It was surprising how little it actually hurt. Yes, i felt groggy and abit rough for a while afterwards, but it wasn't because of any massive amount of pain.
I had some morphine straight after the operation, but my pain wasn't horrendous by any means, half the reason i took the morphine when they offered it to me was just to see what it felt like ( warm, quite nice and very sleepy, just in case you wanted to know ). I could feel where they'd cut my neck but it was, out of ten, maybe about a five pain wise, which seemed mad considering someone had just cut my throat and taken a chunk of cartilage out......
Something else i was worrying about which wasn't any problem at all was the stitches removal. In my head i'd got fairly scared about how they would get them out, what if the skin had healed around and over them, what if they got stuck, or the cut wasn't healed and all my throat came out - eek! - but that also was painless and easy peasy. The nurse just pulled one end and that was it. It didn't hurt, in fact i didn't even feel a thing, and it took about 2 seconds! yay for modern medicine!

Did you hear that? It was the sound of the admission door to next year’s Hadrian’s Walk clanging shut.

Sunday was the deadline for people confirming whether they were coming or not and, with the exception of a few stragglers, I’ve now heard from everyone that I was expecting to.

I’ve decided against chasing people up any further. The level of badgering I’ve already engaged in comes close to earning me a whole bunch of restraining orders. If you really want to come and are worrying you’ve missed the boat don’t worry however, you can still email me and we’ll see what we can do. i just can’t promise anything.

That’s thirty seven walkers in total. thirty seven! Can you believe it! Thank you all so much for agreeing to come along. You’re doing a good thing here.

We’ve a mix of twenty four males and thirteen females with ages ranging from early twenties to late fifties. We’ve got people from England, Scotland, Ireland, America and Holland. We’ve got the personnel to start our own healthcare system: a paramedic, a doctor, and a couple of nurses; our own criminal justice system: a superior court judge, a case builder, and a couple of policemen; and an education system: a university professor and a teaching assistant. But that’s not all, we’ve also got writers, editors, stay-at-home parents, managers, bankers and unemployed bums. As my old cultural studies lecture might say: we have a true microcosm of modern society.

It’d be really good if Team Ocelot can try to get to know each other a little bit before we set off. It will reduce any social awkwardness when we all come together for the first time. Idaho Dad has very graciously agreed to be appointed a sort of net based social secretary and we’ve come up with a number of relatively painless ways of starting to break the ice. All the walkers will no doubt be hearing from him in a couple of weeks.

In the meantime though it’d be a good idea for everybody to add all the blogs listed above to their feedreader, blogroll, or bookmark folder. Even if you’re not going on the walk there isn’t one amongst them isn’t worth a read. And of course if you’re not already checking out the Hadrian’s Walk blog: http://hadrianswalk.org then I urge you to do so as I’m going to start posting organizational stuff on there rather than cross post it here.

Wanna Figure This One Out?

My wife and I were sitting at the kitchen table writing a song together. I sang a few notes and could not believe how beautiful my voice sounded. It was a low feminine voice.

The song had a transgendered theme.

And then it happened.

A horrific explosion.

My wife and I ran out of the house and found that a small private jet had crashed into the neighbor's house, which was engulfed in fire. The fire had spread to our house, the side of which was in flames. We were deeply concerned about the fate of the elderly woman inside the house which was hit by the jet.

Then, I woke up.

That was last night's dream. Definitely a TG theme. The only thing I can remember about the song, besides the transgendered theme, is that the date, June 8th or 10th, was in it. That's it. So frustrating when you can't remember all of the details. I do remember that the house and neighborhood did not in any way resemble any house or neighborhood I have ever lived in.

I have these TG dreams almost nightly. Most of the time, I can't remember any of the details other than I knew it was related to my femme side. Every once in a while I have a vivid dream that wakes me up, like the one last night and like one or two I have mentioned in previous posts. In most of my TG dreams, I look down on myself as a third person, although this one seemed to be a combination of both. I was singing the song but I was looking down at myself and my wife as we were watching the fire.

Virtually all of my TG dreams involve my wife in one way or another and most just involve me living life as a woman. I have only had one erotic TG dream that I can recall. I might note that my gender dysphoria as been running really high on Karen's scale over the past two weeks, and yesterday was a particularly bad day.

Anyone want to interpret this one?
