    <title>Tertiary sector continues strong financial performance </title>

New Zealand&amp;rsquo;s tertiary sector continued to sustain a strong financial performance in 2012 reflecting the increasing size of the Government&amp;rsquo;s investment, latest figures from the Tertiary Education Commission show.
Indicative financial results show that the publicly-owned tertiary institutions collectively recorded a net surplus (before unusual and non-recurring items) of $157.9 million in 2012, an increase of 43 per cent since 2008.

A major expansion of Māori and Pasifika Trades Training to 3,000 places as part of Budget 2013 was announced today by Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce, and Associate Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Tariana Turia.&amp;nbsp;
There are currently 600 places spread across the existing He Toki ki te Rika and Pasifika Trades schemes, which were set up by the current Government in 2011.

    <title>Overseas-based borrowers paying, but not enough</title>

The latest student loan statistics show that the gap between the repayment rates of New Zealand-based borrowers and overseas-based borrowers continues to grow, despite overall lifts in the number of people paying off their loans.
Overseas-based borrowers make up 60 per cent of the 84,562 borrowers in default as at March 31 this year, despite comprising only 15 per cent of the borrowing population. They are responsible for 82 per cent of the $520 million currently in default.

    <title>HLFS shows encouraging job growth</title>

The drop in the unemployment rate from 6.9 per cent to 6.2 per cent in the March quarter is encouraging news, Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce says.
The Household Labour Force Survey released today showed that 38,000 more people were employed in the quarter.
&amp;ldquo;The result follows news the economy grew 3 per cent in the year to December and is another sign the economy is continuing to head in the right direction,&amp;rdquo; Mr Joyce says.

The Hairy Maclary series, first published in 1983, has sold more than nine million copies worldwide.&amp;nbsp;
&amp;ldquo;Hairy Maclary is a much loved character in New Zealand, and he and his friends have helped many Kiwi children to develop their reading skills at an early age,&amp;rdquo; Mr Joyce says.&amp;nbsp;

The student loan repayment rate for borrowers living in New Zealand will rise to 12 per cent from next Monday, as announced in Budget 2012.
Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce says increasing the repayment rate from 10 cents to 12 cents for each dollar of income from 1 April means graduates and ex-students will pay their loans off more quickly.

    <title>Increased international tuition revenues for 2012</title>

Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce has released today the Ministry of Education&amp;rsquo;s 2012 Export Education Levy data that show an increase of two per cent in international education sector revenues for 2012.
The data shows international tuition revenues have increased to $745.7 million &amp;ndash; the highest level of revenue recorded since 2004.

I think we are as a team making great progress in lifting achievement, improving quality, and improving value for money in the tertiary education sector.
Despite difficult financial times and virtually no new money we are training and qualifying more people across the tertiary sector. More people than ever have tertiary qualifications, so we are making good progress. We are continuing to build on this to get even better results.

Mr Joyce is in Malaysia for New Zealand Week, a series of events designed to showcase the education and trade opportunities in New Zealand.

    <title>Early access to Apprenticeships Re-boot </title>

New apprentices will be able to access the Government&amp;rsquo;s re-boot subsidy towards tools and off-job costs and start training sooner, following an announcement today by Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce.
The &amp;lsquo;Apprenticeships Re-boot&amp;rsquo; which was due to start on April 1, will instead commence immediately.

Labour once again stands accused of putting the worst possible spin on youth education and training, Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce says.
&amp;ldquo;The reality is that the latest HLFS shows that just under 80 per cent of all 15-19 year olds in New Zealand are enrolled in education or training, with the total numbers up from 238,000 to 243,000 in the last quarter,&amp;rdquo; Mr Joyce says.

&amp;ldquo;This latest survey reflects the on-going impact of tough economic times globally,&amp;rdquo; Mr Joyce says. &amp;ldquo;It also demonstrates the volatility of the quarterly employment data which continues to move around.

A unique partnership between tertiary education organisations (TEOs) and Pacific churches has seen hundreds of Pacific people trained to help in the Christchurch rebuild,&amp;nbsp;says Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce and Pacific Island Affairs Minister Hekia Parata.
The two groups combined to implement the $6 million Pacific Trades Training Initiative, which is part of the Government&amp;rsquo;s wider $42 million Skills for Canterbury package to maintain the expanded training pipeline for trades people for the Canterbury rebuild.

The new industry training initiatives were today announced by Prime Minister John Key in a speech to the North Harbour Club in Auckland.
