Question: How can I change the default template group for my site?

Answer: It’s a two step process. The first thing you need to do is find out what your default template group is set to now.

Notice that the word news has a red asterisk next to it? That’s your default template group. If you wanted to make the sc template the default, then you’d need to click n Edit Group and change the settings there.

Notice now that when you return to the list of template groups, that sc is the default.

Answer: Look for Return email address for auto-generated emails under Admin > Email Configuration and replace the email address listed there. Also while you’re in there, don’t forget to put something into
Webmaster or site name for auto-generated emails to help your emails not be seen as spam.

What is a Field Group and why Should I Assign One?

Question: What is a Field Group and why Should I Assign One? Do I really need to create one? Can I use the same field group with multiple channels?

Answer: A Field Group is a grouping of custom fields (things like text fields, textareas, file fields, check boxes, and the like) that you use to store information in a channel. Often times these are referred to Custom Field groups, but the two terms are interchangeable.

If you don’t assign a custom field group to your channel, you won’t have any fields other than your title and url_title to save and display on the front end.

For each channel, you can either use the same set of fields, or you can create a new set of fields. The important thing to know is that you can’t reuse field names, so naming these in some sort of fashion is helpful.

As an example - if I were building out a channel for a weblog, I’d use three fields, a summary, body, and extended field. Each of these would be textareas,. Say I wanted to add a portfolio to my site, I could create an additional field to display an image. In that case, i could leave the summary and extended fields alone (I wouldn’t make them required) and just add an image to a File field.

What is a Status Group and why would I Assign one?

Question: What is a Status Group and why would I assign one? Can i use more than one status group, or is one good enough for all my content?

Answer: A Status Group is another way to categorize articles based on their status. EE initially creates an open and a closed status, showing only open statuses unless you specify otherwise.

You can choose to add other statuses, to help with your particular workflow. Often times I create a Featured status, which I use to highlight a specific entry or series of entries. If I have content editors, I might choose to create a Pending status or something similar, so that content which is in flux won’t show until someone who has the ability to switch a status to Open changes an entry.

You’d use that more when doing things like adding entries via SafeCracker, moblog, etc.

When it comes to statuses, make sure you associate a status group with your channel, otherwise only SuperAdmins can post with the status of open. Everyone else will default to closed.

Question: What is a category group, and why would I choose to use on instead of leaving categories set to None?

Answer: Categories is a way of grouping like content. You can create a category group (single or multiple items) which you can assign to a single channel or to multiple channels. You can even decide to have multiple category groups per channel.

This is one of those parts of ExpressionEngine that new users may not understand. Here I use categories to group like minded articles broken down by what kind of information it is. For this article, I use HowTo and FAQs for categories.

You may decide to leave off categories if you don’t see the value or need to break down different kinds of content.

Question: How do I install extra add-ons such as plugins, modules, and extensions? Where do I put the files?

Answer: EE 2.x changed where third party (and first party) plugins, modules and extensions are installed. In this version of EE, you’ll place these files in a folder called third_party found in the /system/expressionengine/third_party folder.

Each add-on should come with a folder named the same thing as the add-on.

NOTE: You may also need to copy information to the /themes/third_party folder if that particular add-on has its own custom themes.

Also a quick note, support for these third party add-ons are the responsibility of the author.
