Summer Craft Marathon 2018 - Week #6

This week's task: Use only needles, threrads, scissors for your creation. And a surface, any surface would work.
Would a disposable coffe cup work? Well, Anna, I say it would!
The geometrical pattern on this coffee cup was the inspiration. I "followed" the pattern with the needle and a new upcycle embroidery cup popped-up!
It took longer than expected (and a light sunburn, as this was an on-the-beach project) and also there was an issue with the lower part of the cup, as the needle would hardly fit in, but still I think the result is quite satisfying.
For the time being, the embroidered cup works as a pencil holder on my book case.

Summer Craft Marathon 2018 - Week #5

Yeap, I did it again: I've skipped a week; while on holiday priorities do change - pardon me Anna from In My Closet. But I am here for week #5, disciplined and agile!

Two years ago, during our first #summerinmyc crafts marathon, we had loved the idea of creating our own greeting cards and we had so much fun playing with colors and materials and textures.
This year Anna repeats the task and I could not miss it. Still on holiday though and away from home; this means a lack of materials and textures - but not a lack of colors: my faithful tiny watercolor kit is always in my backpack, and therefore I was able to create a watercolor postacard.
For the card's theme, I got inspired by the haystack fields, the ochre-yellow hues of which are so warm and summery and will always bring the vacation mood on.
I hope this will work for the card recipient as well!

Cheers to summer nights, to summer days, to summer colors, to summer flavors, to summer sounds!

Summer Craft Marathon 2018 - Week #3

Missed second's week mission, but could not miss this week's for anything in this world.

Anna from In My Closet asked us to make something, anything, inspired by the sea.

Sounds lovely and easy on Monday morning, and you think "great, i have so many days ahead to think of something special and i have sooo many ideas so i can easily accomplish this task" and then out of nowhere Sunday is here and you're in panic.
Long story short, a jar of pebbles, a bunch of driftwoods, some hemp string and my below-basic macrame skills, and here it is, a sea-inspired mobile.

Always let the sea memories be part of your happiness!

Summer Craft Marathon 2018 - Week #1

Old habits die hard.

It's that time of the year.
In other words: Anna from In My Closet is running the Summer Creativity Marathon for the third time in a row and i could not be more excited!

8 weeks, 8 challenges, 8 creative missions.
Let's do this!

This week is all about beauty. And nature. Beauty and nature.
For this year's first challenge, we were called to make our own beauty product out of natural ingredients of our choice.

I decided to use turmeric or curcumin, a favorite spice/herb that i use a lot in many dishes and that is well known for its health benefits.

Only a few dozens of interesting recipes pop up when googling "turmeric diy", such as toothpaste, face masks, exfoliating creams, scrubs etc.
As at the moment i feel my skin a bit dull and irritated due the sun exposure, the idea of a nourishing and brightening face mask seems just right.

So here's a quick and easy diy face mask for glowing skin, with only two ingredients, which i found here (among other turmeric-based recipes and usefull tips):

- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

- 1 tablespoon yoghurt

In a small jar, mix the turmeric powder and yoghurt until you get a consistent and non-dripping paste.

Apply the mask on your face, avoiding the area around the eyes.

Let the mask sit on for 10-15 minutes (don't mind my panic and wary eyes) and then rinse with warm water.

When done with rinsing, your skin might have a yellowish hue. Do-not-panic!
Just rinse your face again, gently, with warm water.
And you're done.
Now you just have to let the turmeric do its miracles on your skin.

Verdict:
Apart from the instant glow, this easy turmeric and yoghurt face mask has actually given me a cool sense of dewiness, which was absolutely necessary for my skin at the moment (hope it'll last for a couple of days!)

You can repeat this once a week - consistency should maximize the results.
For even best results, you can add a bit of coconut oil.

Well, that was all for today: super easy beauty diy shared and now off to get my beauty sleep.

Summer craft marathon 2016 - Week #11

Right after coming home from vacation last week, completely disorganized and in a nostalgic mood, InMyCloset's craft marathon was just what I needed in order to recur smoothly (if possible).

The rules were simple: we had to create a "container" for our summer memories.

I went for the nautical style. I used some rope to simply embellish and old ceramic bowl, which became the nest for my summer memorabilia and souvenirs:

Pebbles, tickets, maps, driftwoods, wedding favors, crafts, fridge magnets etc.

A little something to remind me this summer's best moments and memories during the relentless winter!

Summer craft marathon 2016 - Week #10

Last week, InMyCloset's summer craft marathon found me away from home, on vacation actually.

All participants were called to create "something" unique, using beach finds, such as driftwoods or pebbles or sea glasses or sea shells.

I managed to find some really beautifull pebbles on a beach up north; lacking any other craft gear however, all i could think of was creating these simple guest name tags.

I used an envelope and some glue.

Oh, and a marker and scissors.

No need to mention the time needed for this week's craft.

Ahem.

Summer craft marathon 2016 - Week #9

While I am on vacay, I wanted to share with you last week's challenge and offer you one of my favorite summer drinks, the famous peach bellini and an easy to make version of it.

Ingredients:
*fresh peaches
*lemon or lime
*champagne or prosecco - I used a chilled sparkling rose

Easiest recipe:
Cut peaches into small pieces and then smash them in the mixer, adding some lemon or lime juice.
Strain the peach pulp in order to remove thicker pieces.
Pour the peach paste into champagne flute glasses, add the sparkling wine and garnish with a slice of peach.
Your fresh and bubbly peach bellini is ready!

Summer craft marathon 2016 - Week #8

Last week Anna from InMyCloset really nailed it!

Within the frame of this summer crafts marathon, we were called to play with watercolors!

The rules were simple, all we had to do is use watercolors and create something "light" and then have our creation photographed outdoors.

I started playing around with my favorite watercolors and I ended up having four small square cards, in various colors and in abstract patterns.

I have not yet decided what do with them, for the time being they decorate my desk!

Summer craft marathon 2016 - Week #7

Sending and receiving greeting cards is something that I love for as long as I remember myself!

Creating my own greeting card is always challenging.

Usually inspiration for cards knocks on my door around Christmas, but this time I was called by InMyCloset to create a summer card or a postcard.

This task stands for super fun and of course I could not miss the opportunity of sharing this delirium with our "partner in crafts" Veronika! Scissors, colorful papers, stickers, washi tapes, cords and all kind of materials where on the table, offering a zillion ideas!!!

It was definitely hard to end up with only one creation...shoot!

Anyhow, these are our two summery cards, ready to carry our greetings to our beloved ones!

Summer craft marathon 2016 - Week #6

Those who follow us, know that Anna from InMyCloset is keeping us extremely busy this summer!

We are happy to announce that we've complete 6 tasks out of 6 so far! Woohooo!

Six more to go! It's and artful summer after all!

Last week Anna asked from us to prepare our own summer emergency craft kit, a box that we can carry on our vacation and serve us in case we feel crafty!

Because the worst thing that can happen is having an inspiration flare, but not the tools. Disaster!

So we really loved the idea of this kit, we already knew the content and all we had to do is create the kits, according to our needs and our taste.

Veronika had two beautiful plain craft boxes, which we transformed into our "first aid" kits, while having our wines and cocktails, tattling and moon-gazing!

A classic, our creative mess!

I've decided to fit most of my favorite coloring pencils, tubes and brushes, some tiny canvases and various craft elements in the craft box, assorted in felt compartments.

I embellished the kit's cover with paper and decorative trims and a bold yellow lace that I found in Veronika's kit (keep reading).

On the other hand, lately Veronika is having her "sewing phase" and therefore she could not leave the house without taking her sewing paraphernalia along! Laces and trims and pompoms and fabrics and sewing tools, all orderly placed in her brand new kit, which she decorated with wallpaper in the most amazing red and fuchsia shades!

Craft kits: check!

Now let's go pack our swimsuits and flipflops!

Last week was all about hats! Summer hats!

Anna inspired a lot of restless spirits in upcycling an old hat or totally creating a new one.

My partecipation was simple but fun: I digged up an old cap - most favorite in my puberty - and subtly embellished it with a pompom trim and a handmade felt ~~octopus~~ squid.

I admit it took me less than ten minutes.

Guilty - slacker of the week!

Summer craft marathon 2016 - Week #4

In case you were wondering about last week's marathon...it was a success, despite the fact that we did not post on time. The whole week was very hectic...
Minutes before the deadline and with Veronika's valuable help - once again, I managed to submit my participation for Anna's summer craft marathon on time!
As far as the rules are concerned, we were supposed to create something non-edible but inspired by a summer fruit.
In particular we had to chose among watermelon, melon, peach, apricot, grapes and fig.
I chose watermelon, which happens to be my favorite summer fruit. I tried to transfer its shape to a plain tote bag, using the potato stamp technique.
This is what the tote bag looks like; I find it super trendy and summery!

Last week Veronika really outdid herself chosing watermelon as well. She grabbed an old wooden tray and transformed it into the ultimate summer tray, ready to serve her ooak cool and refreshing home made lemonade!

Summer craft marathon 2016 - Week #3

This week's marathon was so sweet. Technically sweet.
Yesterday was Anna's birthday, so all she asked from us was to prepare a sweet/candie, with a candle on it for her to blow out. Not a tough task admittedly, cause we like candies, and we do like Anna as well!
And so does Veronika, who invited me over to her place yesterday, in order to ~~mess up her kitchen~~ mix and stir and dust and sprinkle.
At this point I must cordially thank Veronika, as without her valuable assistance and inspiration, I would most probably still be trying to pick out a recipe/method/ingredients etc., instead of writing this very post.
Pastry making is not my specialty - guilty!
So, thanks to her, here are our sweet participations for our weekly challenge, prepared with love for Anna, in lieu of birthday wishes!

Bullet points:
1. For "technical" reasons we have decided to skip the making-of pictures and we just sticked to the before and after photos.
2. Drooling's allowed.

Summer craft marathon 2016 - Week #2

A couple of days ago, on a warm summer night, my balcony was transformed into a little worshop. Our craft partner Veronika came over and despite the fact that we had soooo many ideas about this week's assignment for In My Closet's summer craft marathon, we have decided to stick in just one craft project per person.
So, we proudly present this week's participations.
Bon voyage!

Upcycle #1
An old glass presse-papier that was resting on the library for so many years now, was transformed into a brand new one, ready to travel us around the globe!

Over Caucasus particularly!

All Veronika needed was a lot of torn pieces of map, some school glue and lots of patience (ok and some gossip in between!)

Upcycle #2
I am not the one to collect e v e r y s i n g l e t h i n g in a box/closet/drawer, in case i might need it in the future... I usually throw away objects that I find useless. Luckily, I did not throw away these ruined clay plates (that were supposed to become coasters...) and they were used in this project, saving us money and time.
And time flew pleasantly while shooting the breeze and suddenly we saw all those torn pieces of map transforming into a wall hanging mobile!
Greek islands Tilos, Kasos and Nisyros are on our bucket list as you can see.

Summer craft marathon 2016 - Week #1

This summer, Anna, that restless crafty girl from InMyCloset has decided to keep us busy, as she usually does.
On a weekly basis, she will be proposing a new craft challenge, 12 in total!
Last week I could not help attending her as the challenge was quite appealing: we had to take an old piece of clothing or accessory and transform it into something new.
Unfortunately, the unworn and ready-to-throw-away garments and accessories were way more than I originally thought and there was only one week in order to complete the task. Big trouble.
Thankfully, I was not alone in this creative adventure!
My good friend Veronika -who also happens to be very artistic and crafty and a true handywoman- invited me over her place in order to deliberate for this solemn purpose: giving life to a bunch of old t-shirts, stuck in our closets for many many years now.
Scissors and fabrics and yarns and trims and needles were all over the working table on a sunny Friday afternoon, which turned out to be a super fun one!
Upcycling at its best!

And while a picture is worth a thousand words, here is a glimpse on what we have accomplished together for this first week's challenge!

Upcycle #1
A plain black tshirt is transformed to an haute-couture piece, featuring a pair of angel's wings on the back! Cutting them out was a hassle but a glass of fresh homemade lemonade was a real consolation - well, ok and those extra tiny hands!

Upcycle #2
This white vest top has been brought back to life just by replacing the old twinkly necklace with a new removable fringe necklace, consisting of colorful tshirt yarns (made out of old unworn polo men tshirts). Easy yet graceful!

Upcycle #3 by Aggelina
As you can see creativity and inspiration were thriving and what's more, Veronika's daughter was our little helper, our summer elf: not only did she contributed to our task's completion; she even remodelled her own t-shirt by adding a bright pompom fringe on the shirt's neckline and a little cute detail on the back.
Look at her, deservedly proud of her accomplishment!

Upcycle #4
(out of competition)
An old v-neck black tshirt, not particularly interesting, has been transformed in just a few steps into this fresh ooak blouse!
Veronika skillfully made this cute flower embellishment, using various fabrics, felt pieces and bell beads and Aggelina attached it onto the tshirt's neckline in a few stitches.
A really versatile piece of clothing took the place of that bland tshirt, don't you think so?

After all this crafting overdose, the time has come for us to sit back and shout "Whoopee! Summer Craft Marathon, week #1: Mission accomplished!".
And now off to week #2 where a new intriguing task is awaiting!

Martis bracelets vol. 2

According to Greek tradition, wearing a braided bracelet from red and white string on the first day of March, is considered to help protect the wearer's skin from the strong Greek sun. The traditional bracelet is called "Martis", meaning March in Greek. As soon as March ends, wearer can remove the bracelet from his/her wrist and place it on a bush or tree. Tradition says that swallows will use the bracelet to create their nest.

This first weekend in the city, after a busy summer and a 5-day gastroenteritis, found me crafting out of the blue. InMyCloset posted this article with a bunch of awesome easy diy ideas which immediately brought up a sudden appetite for creation. Of all the 18 ideas, I thought on recreating a couple of these cute cactus felt pin cushions, as they are always usefull for any sewing kit and as I had all the supplies in stock. Well, almost all: my empty ceramic pots were all either too big or too dirty. Luckily there is a jam jars galore in this house, so here are my own versions.
Not too perfect in the details, I know, but I preferred sticking on the fun part.
It took less than 40' and perhaps 0.50euros for both of them. Not bad, huh?
