Diabetes is a rapidly growing, serious health problem among youngster today. Above thirteen thousand adolescents are diagnosed for type 1 diabetes, every year in America. There has also been an increase in the number of teenagers with type 2 diabetes, which was more common among adults above forty and who were overweight. Clinics are reporting that nearly half of the new childhood diabetes cases are of type 2. Adolescents, who are obese and had type 2 diabetes in the family history, are at a greater risk of developing diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease where the human body is incapable of producing or utilizing insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the body in order to get energy by converting starches, sugar and other items. Since the insulin isn't used properly in diabetic people, the blood sugar level increases. This glucose buildup is found in blood and is then passed onto the urine and comes out of the body and the major source of body energy is lost.

Diabetes is a serious chronic disease and should be handled at proper time; otherwise it can create serious problems. It can pose a risk and can damage parts of the human body such as eyes, teeth, gums, blood vessels, nerves, and kidneys. This is the reason why diabetes is responsible in most of the cases of adult blindness, kidney failure and lower limb amputations. And if left untreated, it can cause stroke, heart disease and eventually, death. These problems are not only faced by adults, but also adolescents who get diabetes in their childhood. The important factor in treatment of diabetes is to keep the blood sugar level normal at all times.

There are basically two types of diabetes that will affect an adolescent. It is type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes affects the immune system's function as the systems attacks the pancreas' insulin producing cells, also known as the beta cells. Because of this, the pancreas loses the ability to manufacture insulin. This is the reason why people with type 1 diabetes take insulin everyday. The symptoms are weight loss, increase in urination & thirst, blurred vision, tiredness and constant hunger. And if the adolescent isn't treated at the right time, he/she can slip in to diabetic coma which can endanger his/her life. In type2 diabetes, the body is incapable of properly using the insulin produced by the body and requires insulin from an external source, too. The symptoms of type 2 diabetes are similar to type 1 diabetes. The teenager feels sick, tired, nauseated, and thirsty. The wounds will recover very slowly; he/she will get infections frequently, will develop blurred vision and will experience weight loss.

Parents play a vital role in determining the problem. They should constantly observe their child for eating disorders or signs of depression. Although cigarette, drugs and alcohol should be avoided by all adolescents and children, it is even more important that youngster with diabetes should stay away from these things as they can worsen the situation. A person with diabetes, who switches to smoking, is at risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and circulatory problems. Consumption of alcohol can cause hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. It is the duty of the parents to make their child aware of the possible risk they would face if they start to smoke, drink alcohol or take drugs.

Children and adolescents, who have diabetes, face many challenges while trying to lead a normal life. They have to think twice before doing simple things as going to a party, playing sports and even when staying over with friends. This is because they require to intake oral medication or insulin. Their blood sugar level must be checked many times through out the day. Also, at gatherings, they have to avoid many food items. Because of this they will feel different from the crowd and can feel left out. Not only does diabetes pose behavioral challenges, but also emotional challenges.

Along with doctor consultation, a psychologist must also be consulted who can deal with the emotional challenges of the adolescent. The family should also play an active role in making the youngster feel better. The family should work in collaboration with physician, dietitian and diabetes educators. Teachers, counselors, school nurses, day care providers, and other community members can provide extended support and guidance. They can provide help with transportation, mental health counseling, health education, social services and financial services.

Detoxification has been a lengthy discussion ever since. Whether to detox or not, is up to you.

Even though you are 'healthy' this does not mean that you don't need to detox. Sure our body does this on a continual basis, our kidneys and livers are constantly working by cleaning out all the pollutants (smoke, caffeine, chemical-based products etc) in our body. Detox strengthen our organs back to optimal function.

Basically, this is done through fasting, therefore resting the organs and stimulating the liver by pushing away the toxins from the body. Nourishing the body with healthy nutrients is also done to maintain optimum health. It has been practiced for centuries around the world by different cultures.

Although a lot of people want whole body detoxification, some wants to have a detox on a particular organ only, such as the kidney, liver or colon. During kidney cleansing, herbal supplements and juices are used to dissolve and wash out kidney stones; particular foods are consumed in liver cleansing causing the gall bladder and liver to remove fatty deposits and toxins out of the body. Colon cleansing on the other hand, gently flushes the colon with water providing a pathway for the release of toxins.

There are also techniques used in whole body cleansing such as:

Fasting. Water or juice fasting is applied for a period of time to lessen toxic loads in the body causing the body to heal itself and nourish inside out.

Parasite cleaning. Right amount of pills or tinctures made out of bitter herbs are consumed to build an unreceptive environment for the parasites inside the body.

Contrast Shower. The contrast among hot and cold water enhances circulation, helps in detoxifying thus having a stronger immune system. This also helps by bringing oxygen, nutrients and immune cells towards damaged and stressed tissue and flushes metabolic waste and other toxins.

Sauna, yoga, exercise, raw food dieting and dry skin brushing also enhance the body's natural cleansing process.

Other Detoxifying aids

There are a number of safe products that helps in the cleansing process such as cleansing supplement packages (with easy-to-follow instructions), detox foot patches, commercially prepared detox teas, Epsom salts, high-class multivitamins for daily intake and antioxidants like Q10 and E that can be found at health food stores.

Before and after side effects:

As the procedures differ, so do the benefits.

During the detox, you'll most likely feel the side effects that take place during the first few days such as headaches, feeling weak, sore muscles, cranky moods and unable to sleep soundly.

There are also a number of positive side effects days after the cleansing process. You will feel energetic, mental clarity improved, skin is clearer, improved sleep, and have a positive attitude in life for a fresh start.

Detoxification is safe and beneficial for our health. It is suggested that each one should at least have a short detoxification program yearly. However, children, nursing mothers, and patients with cancer, chronic degenerative illness and tuberculosis should consult their physician first for approval and supervision or find someone who is familiar with detox.

If you decide to award your body with holiday, find a nutritional therapist who is familiar with detox.

Here's how:

You can call your friends who are into health foods and alternative medicines, ask them for a person who they can refer. Another way is to search in the yellow pages under nutrition or by looking for ads in health publication in your locality. Get the name of someone you found whose name appears in more than one place and check for his profile, like from which school he/she attended the training and if it's an accredited one. Also ask how long he's been in practice.

Many people look forward to retirement. They might be planning to tour the world, move to a warmer climate, play golf everyday, or just sit down and relax. However, in many cases, the day to day chores of living cut into the time that they have to relax and enjoy life. If this is the case, it might be worth the time to look into assisted living.

Many assisted living communities are well-run and are of good quality; however there will be big differences between one community and the next. For many people, there is a direct preference for those communities that go above and beyond the norm to help their residents stay active, busy, and involved with life. Current residents and staff will be warm and inviting and more than willing to share how they feel about their community of choice. Talking with current residents is often the best way to weigh your considerations against each other to find the one that is right for you.

The main goals of seniors that move into assisted living communities are to maintain their independence and dignity. While there can be quite a range of ages at any one center, most residents will be in their early 80s. At this stage in their life, day to day living may previously have become a drag, as loved ones passed on and it became more difficult to do day to day chores. They may find a second youth when they come to live in an assisted living community.

For those shopping for retirement living, there can be some confusion between independent and assisted living. Independent living often provides elders with their own apartments, some complete with kitchens, with central areas that they share, and only minimal assistance. Both types will generally provide meals, utilities, limited transportation, housecleaning and laundry, and social activities. Some communities will offer both independent and assisted living option.

Assisted living is somewhat similar, but offers assistance to adults that need help dressing, eating, bathing, and like activities but do not have to be monitored around the clock. They are able to keep their independence with only a little daily help.

Many living facilities will offer a variety of activities for their residents. This may include religious services, craft classes, Bingo nights, senior sports, and more. While most communities encourage residents to stay active, you can often choose to be as involved as you prefer.

You should not consider assisted living facilities nursing homes, as there is a distinct difference. Assisted living facilities are geared towards those who are independent, while nursing homes are for patients who need care around the clock.

You can find independent living and assisted living facilities around the country. To help narrow down your search, you might want to consider the geographic area where you would most like to live first, and then look for facilities in that area. Some seniors prefer to stay close to friends and family, while others migrate towards warmer or cooler climates as their preferences dictate.

When you think of insomnia you're thinking of someone who can't sleep for a reasonable amount of time. A typical complaint from an insomniac is not being able to close their eyes or rest their mind for over a few minutes at a time. There are many reasons for this ranging from anxiety to bipolar disorder. Yet sometimes there's no real causes and can just happen for any given reason, but too much activity and physical pain can be causes for someone not to be sleeping at night.

Finding the underlying causes is key to finding a cure for this problem. It's also been found that not eating has contributed to someone not sleeping. There are 3 types of insomnia and they are transient insomnia which lasts anywhere from a single night to several weeks, acute insomnia is the inability to sleep well for a single period of 3 weeks to up to 6 months, and chronic is deemed the most serious where it's happening nightly for at least a month or longer.

There are options to treat insomnia the most common is medicinal since there's commercials on for Ambien, Ambien CR (Controlled Release) , Rozerem, and Lunesta prescribed for people dealing with sleeping disorders.

It seems in this day and age that sleeping disorders are becoming more common and prevalent because with the new line of sleeping pills coming out explains clearly shows that there is an increase of sleeping disorders of many variations. Some of the medications out there that's used in treatment of insomnia have proven that it was effective in helping insomniacs wake and sleep at the right time, but it lacks the data information to prove the theory as truth and factual. Lunesta and Ambien are noted to having a high psychological dependence than the older brands of sleeping pills and now cognitive behavior therapy is one of the many options widely used in someone dealing with insomnia and using the medication Rozerem because of the like hood of getting hooked to the drug is reduced and is widely prescribed for people who have a history of overusing their medications.

Some insomniacs have used herbs like chamomile when drunk in tea and lavender for aromatherapy as a means to relax. Insomnia can also result in a deficiency of magnesium and getting the right amount has proven to improve the quality of a person's sleeping patterns.

Pomegranates are also good for insomniacs since there's a nutrient in the fruit key for everything from immunity to cardiovascular health and are good for improving sleep. Insomniacs are also advised to eliminate a lot of the stress and tension in their lives because this is a triggering problem in the everyday life on an insomniac. Chinese medicine has also been introduced into helping those with sleeping disorders and other issues surrounding that. According to statistics taken from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services it's estimated that 60 million Americans suffer from some type of insomnia and is noted to increase with age. 40% of women and 30% of men suffer from this.

Women tend to deal with this more because of increased level of responsibilities in their lives since more and more households in the United States are becoming single run homes and 75% of women are the heads of them which makes them the sole bread winners and taking on the role of mother and father which makes their lives increasingly difficult when they don't have a partner or spouse to give them the support they need.

When you work in the field of medicine, your responsibility is for the care of the patient. Here are some of the outbreak control measures that you can take if you have symptomatic MRSA patients under your care.

First, you will want to be aware of any microbiological results you have on the patients under your care. You can use these results to determine a baseline number of persons with MRSA, as well as calculate the MRSA infection rate. This can help you identify trends in the rates of infections.

You can also use the medical records to identify which new residents have MRSA colonies or infections, particularly if they are coming in from a long term care facility or a hospital. There is no need to conduct a culture to determine MRSA status, simply use the information that is given to you.

Once you have identified which patients have MRSA, you will want to keep records on several aspects of their health. Monitor both residents who had a positive MRSA culture but do not have symptoms and those who are showing symptoms. Monitor the known sites of the colonization or infections, the date of the positive test, and the room where the patient is staying. You will want records of any and all treatments that are performed, as well as a record of anyone that comes in contact with that person, including other residents, staff, and visitors.

If you have residents with active infections or symptoms of infections, you will want to keep them isolated from other residents. Put them in a private room whenever possible. If one is not available, a MRSA patient can share a room with another MRSA patient that has no other infections. Make sure that you follow all hygiene procedures, including hand washing and wearing protective gear like gloves, gowns, and masks. Provide the treatment for MRSA as prescribed. Make sure that the room is cleaned daily if not more frequently, especially bedside equipment, frequently touched surfaces, bathrooms, and other possible contamination sites like handrails, telephones, or doorknobs. Make sure soiled linen is bagged in the room to prevent a spread of the bacteria. Make sure that all visitors are informed on the infections and outbreaks, and limit visiting times to infected patients. Having visitors follow the hygiene codes of frequent hand washing and wearing of protective gear can also help stem the flow of an outbreak.

Patients who are colonized with MRSA should be allowed to live normally. Protect other residents by avoiding practices that could lead to contamination, such as sharing a room. Normal environmental cleaning procedures and normal linen handling are sufficient. You should only treat a patient with MRSA colonization if they are at risk of developing an infection.

Remember that you the health care worker are the first line of defense against MRSA. When you do your part, patients can live longer, healthier lives without the worry of MRSA.

People with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) have obsessive thoughts that invokes a compulsion to do an act or ritual. Managing these thoughts with out aid may provoke a stronger obsessive thought and/or compulsion. This article is intended to be and aid only. The only way to effectively manage OCD is to correctly be diagnosed and be under supervision of a mental health professional.

The simplest way to try and manage an obsessive thought is not to dwell on it. It may be simple, to the person with OCD this is actually a chore and very difficult to attempt. For some, getting rid of the thoughts creates anxiety because the compulsion gets put on hold and results in a stronger compulsion at the next time the obsessive thought resurfaces. Not dwelling on the obsessive thought can be effective, if done properly.

When an obsessive thought surfaces, or many at once, don't apprehend over it. Try to rationalize that the thought is embellished and is not part of reality. Generally the panic created over the obsession is the causing factor to the anxiety. Try to disregard the fear over the obsession no matter how overwhelming it is. Once the fear is discounted, the obsessive thought then befalls a managing level.

Fear is the difference between normal thoughts and obsessive ones. The alarm created by an obsessive thought (to an extreme) may be washing of the hands until the start to bleed for fear that the germs will harm them. This leads into another managing technique. Discover the source of the fear, once discovered; analyze it to break it down into a manageable level to control the obsessive thought.

When the obsessive thought is at a manageable level, try to imagine a stop light as a signal to begin a managing technique. Since most obsessive thoughts are damaging, the stop light could serve as the indicator to think of a constructive thought instead. Instead of washing ones hands until they bleed, wash them once and then praise yourself for completing the task of ridding the germs. Although this appears to be replacing one compulsion for another, it is not as severe or destructive. The main difference is that the praising oneself is constructive and not as destructive to point of bleeding hands.

It is important to confront disparaging thoughts with encouraging statements and common sense thinking. Does washing ones hands until they bleed actually make them more sanitary? Common sense says no, it actually creates an access for germs to enter the body more easily. So wash ones hands once and pronounce that the germs are now gone and the risks of infection or sickness are now quashed. The best way to help oneself in working on managing obsessive thoughts is to maintain a notebook and document them. When capable, devise ways to manage the obsessive thought and try different ways when one does not work until a satisfactory solution is found. Never quit trying to overcome the disparaging OCD symptoms, if you do not succeed, try, try again.

Perhaps you've already considered taking over the counter dietary supplements to help you reach your weight loss goals. Why don't you consider chitosan-based products?

Chitosan has been around for ages. It is highly considered as a potent weight loss aid for its ability to bind fats in the digestive tract, preventing these fats to enter into the system, thus promoting weight loss. Well, nutrition shops, pharmacies and even websites are now offering a plethora of chitosan-based products that claim to burn fat, block absorption, modulate carbohydrates metabolism, boost energy expenditure, flush out excess water weight, control cravings, and suppress appetite. And, perhaps what is best about these products is that they are now offered in discount prices.

Now, if you are planning to take chitosan to help you achieve your weight loss goals, I have here below some sites that you can visit online discount chitosan. Yes, you heard me right - discount chitosan. Okay, here are a few of them:

QualityGenerics.com

Quality Generics currently features Chitosan Plus, which is manufactured by Universal Nutrition. As such, Chitosan Plus is said to prevent dietary fats from being absorbed by the body.

Note that you can avail a discount of this product if you buy more. This is for the fact that Quality Generics offer a volume discount of Chitosan Plus. And, perhaps what is nice about this offer is that you also have the chance to receive bonus pills savings if applicable.

FitFlex.com

Another notable site where you can find a discount chitosan-based product is FitFlex.com. Just recently, they offered the Dymatize Fat and Thin Chitosan fat trapper. As the name implies, this is said to be potent for promoting weight loss. And, being a discount chitosan-based product, you have the chance to receive this item in a discounted price.

HerbsMD.com

Probably you've chitosan by Natrol. Well, this chitosan is now offered at HerbsMD.com at a discounted price. According to certain reviews of this discount chitosan, Chitosan by Natrol helps bind fat on the diet, promoting weight loss. This discount chitosan can now be used in conjunction with a healthy calorie reduction and exercise program.

VitaNetOnline.com

You can also find a discount chitosan at VitaNetOnline.com. Just like Quality Generics, you will be able to receive chitosan-based products with discounts here if you will buy more for the reason that they only offer volume discounts. There are also other diet and weight loss supplements available other than chitosan.

Netrition.com

Finally, Netrition is out there to give you various chitosan-based products with discounted prices. Here you can find a number of discount chitosan products manufactured by different laboratories, such as the Chitosan Plus, F Block, Reduce, and others, all at discounted prices. Pregnant women are also prohibited as chitosan might affect the growth of the child, particularly on retardation.

We have seen movies, heard stories and read about cancer almost everywhere. Even our favorite actors and actresses have portrayed the role of a cancer victim in a movie. We may have even learned about a colleague, a friend, or a close relative being diagnosed with the disease, and always, our initial reaction is that of shock and pity. But when did it really occur to you how serious this disease is, and those who have them suffer a great deal, both physically and emotionally. We have been made aware about this fatal disease and that it can pick anyone, no matter what race, color, age or stature you have in society. Let's know more about this feared disease and how it affects us physically.

What is cancer?

Cancer is a class of diseases or disorders characterized by uncontrolled division of cells and the ability of these cells to invade other tissues, either by growth to adjacent tissue through invasion or by implantation into distant sites by metastasis (spread of cancer from its primary sites to other places). Metastasis is defined as the stage in which cancer cells are transported through the bloodstream or lymphatic system.

The risk of this disease increases with age, although it may affect people at all ages. There are many types of cancer, but the severity of symptoms may vary and depend on the site and character of the malignancy and if whether or not there is metastasis. To diagnose the disease usually requires the histologic examination of tissue by a pathologist. The tissue is obtained by biopsy or surgery. Depending on the specific type, location and stage of a cancer, most can usually be treated.

Damage to DNA causes the unregulated growth that characterizes cancer, resulting in mutations to genes that encode for proteins controlling cell division. Many mutation occurrences entail the transformation of a normal cell into a malignant cell. These mutations can be caused by chemicals or physical agents called carcinogens, by close exposure to radioactive materials, or by certain viruses that can insert their DNA into human genome. Germ line mutations are passed down to generations.

Once a person is diagnosed of the disease, treatments would usually be a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. With modern research and developments, treatments of the disease are becoming more specific for the type of cancer pathology. There are now a lot of drugs that target specific cancers. If this disease is untreated, it may eventually cause illness and death, though it is not always the case.

Many forms of cancer are linked with a person's exposure to environmental factors such as tobacco smoke, radiation, alcohol and certain viruses. Although some of these can be avoided, there is no known method or way to avoid the disease. Public health and vaccination programs also play an important role on a global scale.

According to statistics the deviant in mental health is always, the professionals since these people are striving to submit their patients to the so-called norms. The so-called norms are said to be people that conform to a standard set of rules, and often believe similar in contrast. This means that everyone is everyone else and few are who they really are. Mental health is overrated in many instances. For example, if a counselor believes one way he or she will not falter at the voices of the patient's belief. If the patient believes that he or she is physically ill and the counselor see no evidence of the claim, the professional will often take for advantage that the patient is ill. However, if the patient goes to the doctor, tests are run, and then the who is the deviant.

The game of cat and mouse is always played in mental health and mental illness since everyone wants to be right. Is it any wonder mental illnesses are increasing and counselors are sitting in their comfortable chairs trying to figure out what is going on? Anyone that goes to a mental health professional is almost certain to receive an instant diagnose. The intake worker alone will evaluate a patient searching for evidence that complies with the Insurance coverage. They will then ship the patient over to a therapist and possibly onto a psychiatrist. The chain never ends. Too many times when patients visit a therapist the professional will take for advantage that he or she is educated and the patient is a misfit. They often will talk, but listening is minimal. First, it takes years if not a lifetime to treat a patient with paranoid schizophrenia, and most times the patients are covered with Medicaid/Medicare and neglected throughout the course of treatment. Mental health experts are in constant battle trying to find answers too many questions. Today there are experts admitting that listening to the patient is proving more fruitful. It is time we all look at the problems going on in the world and start taking it more serious, rather than disregarding the problems. It is a shame that too many mentally ill patients are sitting in jail, simply because someone did not listen and no one did anything toward finding a resolve.

Mental illness as defined is a series of minds that manufacture behaviors that are reworked copies of a social existence. According to studies, the behaviors of mental ill patients often infringe on the so-called normal society. One of the most common traits in mental illnesses according to professionals is denial. Here is where we stop. Denial > Mentally Ill > When a counselor makes a mistake in many cases they put the blame on the patient or faulty teachings. Few rarely take responsibility for their wrong. Political > When the leaders of the world make mistakes they often search the world for someone else to blame….Religion > When religious leaders are persecuted or else wrong, many find a way to blame the victims or candidates involved. When society makes mistakes, they often find someone else to blame. When the law makes mistakes in most cases, it's always someone else's fault. Denial…I think you better taking a deeper look at who is in denial, since patients sitting across from a professional asking for help are admitting there is a problem.

There are many areas we can review, but the deviant is not always sitting across the room looking into the eyes of a mentally ill person. We can also look closer at the so-called norms of society and see they have their own set of problems. If we all conform to a set of beliefs that has proven failure, what makes the person (s) think they are mentally stable. If people are sitting down letting everyone around them control their lives and rarely standing up for their own beliefs…who says they are mentally stable. Mental illnesses go deeper than many are aware, since nearly everyone in the world is suffering some type of abnormal behavior copied from other behaviors. Someone else influences everyone; therefore, we all lost our values and morals somewhere along the way.

There are many areas to be concerned about regarding the care and environment as well as programs offered. If you are not careful some very important issues may be left out and they may have an impact on your decision-making process.

There is the issue of staff credentials and ongoing training. Ask about if staff credentials are checked for accuracy. It is important to know if staff is receiving ongoing training. Ask for any affiliations the facility may belong to for support and guidance and accountability. You should be able to see evidence of regular inspections for safety being conducted upon the premises of the facility. Ask to see their Form 2567, which is a state inspection survey. This is a report that details the results of unannounced visits by state surveyors who speak with residents and check on various care issues as well as completing checks for sanitation. The credentials, training, associations and inspections are all vital to the safety of your loved one and must be in place in order for you to consider placing your relative in their care.

The environment besides being safe must also be as home-like as possible for comfort and well being. The air quality and temperature must be comfortable. The equipment used must be safe and durable. There must be adequate beds and other furniture for all of the residents.

Staff should be friendly and address the residents with respect and preferably by name. The rooms should be clean and uncluttered. There should be adequate lighting, handrails and wide, clear hallways. There should be a dining room and a place where residents can entertain guests. Residents should be able to personalize their rooms.

Care services should match what the current and future needs will be of your loved one so that the facility can continue to meet the needs now and into the future so that you will not need to move your loved one again. Be certain that they have physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy available. Does the facility have skilled nursing available in case it is needed (feeding tube, injections or intravenous fluids). Are there are support services available such as social workers, clergy, volunteers, medical doctors and specialists, therapists, and also activity director and staff.

Even if your loved one does not require skilled nursing at this point, they may in the future. Make a point to speak with the Director of Nurses at the facility. Ask how long they have been the director and what their philosophy is for nursing care of the residents. Do they have the support of the administration? A care home that experiences multiple turnovers may not have either the support of the administration or may lack good quality nursing staff.

Make sure that the home you decide to enroll in has Medi-Cal. This is funding for when the resident runs out of money or insurance. Make sure you have all fee schedules before signing any papers. Ask for any additional fees for services not covered on the standard contract. Make sure everything you discuss concerning care is in writing. Ask for referrals from staff and current residents. The safety and well-being of your loved one is at stake so take the time now to investigate all you can and ask questions until you are satisfied with the answers.
