Legendary technical metal act, Believer, are currently in the process of writing their sixth album. It’s their third for Metal Blade Records and the follow up to 2011′s Transhuman, which was heavily spun on SiriusXM’s Liquid Metal and received stellar reviews in print and online. Believer also performed at last year’s New England Metal and Hardcore fest. Since then, the band has been writing new material.

Founding member Kurt Bachman elaborates; “As we begin the writing process, I feel that this will be the most sensual of all Believer releases. Once again we are striving to create something unique, while not throwing away any riff just because it might not fit the typical Believer mold. This is part of the process we love and hate. We love being creative, yet we place intense pressure on ourselves to write something we’ll enjoy hearing and playing at least 2060 times. Of course, we are sticking to our two main goals: 1) Have fun and 2) Don’t die in the process.”

While Bachman’s goals don’t seem all that lofty, the band is well known for their challenging and thought-provoking material, as seen on their previous two Metal Blade efforts, Gabriel and Transhuman. Updates regarding art and music will be made available within the coming months. Make sure to follow the band on facebook and twitter for the most immediate updates.

“Epic and memorable…a well rounded work of metal that is forward thinking on multiple levels, not to mention catchy as heck.” 9/10, Outburn Magazine

“I was so taken by it that I’ve since listened to it several times through… in a row! It’s worked its way onto my “favorite of 2011 so far” list, and I could definitely see it staying there all year. This album is worthy of the attention of just about any metal fan. It’s all over the map stylistically, but it’s got a unifying musical quality that ties it all together… its Believer-ness, if you will.” MetalSucks.net

“Adding color to some of the most bewildering – yet crushing – riffs you could ask for, are engaging elements of industrial, psychedelic and soundtrack music, courtesy of a host of programmed synths and sympathetic keyboards that confirm Believer as well and truly ahead of the pack.” About.com

“Believer has always exhibited a knack for composing oddly compelling tunes.” MetalReview.com

Believer has gained worldwide recognition for their boundary-breaking, artistic form of extreme metal. Joined by bands Cynic and Pestilence, Roadrunner Records pushed a prog-metal/thrash campaign with the three bands called, “The Breed Beyond” and solidified Believer among the ranks of unique, creative musical acts. The centerpiece of their 3rd release, Dimensions, was a metal opera that brought them great praise from fans and musicians worldwide and threw open the doors to collaborations between metal and orchestral musicians and sealed the band’s legacy.

“It’s not often a band can take a 16 year hiatus and come back with an album that gains as much critical acclaim as Believer’s fourth record ‘Gabriel’ did when it was released back in 2009. The band weren’t exactly new to critical acclaim, before taking a hiatus the band were considered one of the pioneers of progressive/technical thrash and were grouped with bands such as Cynic and Pestilence. Two years on from their return and Believer are about to release ‘Transhuman’ and prove that their comeback album wasn’t a one off.”

Inspired by Thomas Metzinger’s Book, The Ego Tunnel: The Science of the Mind and the Myth of the Self

We’re used to thinking about the self as an independent entity, something that we either have or are. In The Ego Tunnel, philosopher Thomas Metzinger claims otherwise: No such thing as a self exists. The conscious self is the content of a model created by our brain – an internal image, but one we cannot experience as an image. Everything we experience is “a virtual self in a virtual reality”.

But if the self is not “real,” why and how did it evolve? How does the brain construct it? Do we still have souls, free will, personal autonomy, or moral accountability?

In a time when the science of cognition is becoming as controversial as evolution, The Ego Tunnel provides a stunningly original take on the mystery of the mind.

Scroll down to watch Thomas Metzinger’s TED talk. Includes all slides and visuals from his presentation.

Thomas Metzinger on the Brain Science Podcast

The free podcast version of Brain Science Podcast 67 is now available. It is an interview with German philosopher Thomas Metzinger, author of The Ego Tunnel: The Science of the Mind and the Myth of the Self and Being No One. Dr. Metzinger argues that any credible model for how the brain generates the mind must incorporate unusual human experiences, such as so-called out of body experiences (OBE), and psychiatric conditions. In this interview we explore how OBE and virtual reality experiments shed light on how the brain generates the sense of self that characterizes normal human experience.

March 7, 2011 • Legendary Heavy Metal outfit BELIEVER has released their first single for their, brand new concept album Transhuman due April 12th!

Once again, BELIEVER tapped into the artistic genius of Michael Rosner and Eye Level Studio to produce the Transhuman artwork and layout. “We wanted to work with Roz again on Transhuman as our visions of combining art and music truly parallel. He just gets it and his artwork is outside the typical box in a way that we strive for musically. It is an amazing collaboration that we have with Roz that continues to evolve. We are excited for everyone to see the final layout!”

The band continues; “Sonically we’re extremely happy with this album and can’t wait for other people to hear it. We feel like this is a really strong and unique album in the BELIEVER catalogue and it’s something we’re definitely proud of.

So what will you hear? We focused more on the overall musicality which included more instrumental layers than we used before. The vocals were also more of a focus as we have had much feedback throughout the years, specifically to get out of the one dimensional realm. Kurt wanted the vocals to be more complimentary to the overall tune feel, so he used many facets of his vocal abilities. As with all Believer albums, this one is definitely unique.”

Transhumanism: The study of the ramifications, promises, and potential dangers of technologies that will enable us to overcome fundamental human limitations, and the related study of the ethical matters involved in developing and using such technologies.

Immensely heavy, deceptively melodic, ambitiously daring, and brilliantly played. BELIEVER’S brand new concept album TRANSHUMAN available everywhere April 12!

“We’re pleased to announce that mixing and mastering for the upcoming album is complete. We decided early on in project that we wanted an outside person to mix the record so we could spend more time writing and recording. Kevin Leaman (BELIEVERguitarist) recommended Kevin Gutierrez from Assembly Line Studios for mixing this record. Leaman had worked with Gutierrez previously and said that he was really easy to work with. From the first telephone conversation it was clear that Gutierrez understood exactly what we were looking for sonically and he seemed really interested in helping us achieve that.

We let Kevin know we wanted this album to sound very musical; not just be heavy. We wanted to use the whole frequency range and not have all the mids scooped out so that everything going on in the tunes was audible. Most importantly, we wanted to keep the dynamics. We were a little nervous about not being there physically for the mix, but we spent so much time tweaking in the sounds for tracking that we were confident he had good stuff to work with. The rough mixes we made for ourselves already sounded pretty decent.

Kevin was fast and efficient. He’d send us reference mixes as he completed each song and we’d be emailing/texting comments back and forth at all hours of the day and night. He was very responsive to our change requests and was really helpful in setting up the mastering session and communicating what we wanted to Maor Appelbaum of Maor Appelbaum Mastering.

Maor also understood what we were trying to achieve with the dynamics and the overall listening experience we wanted to create on this album.

Sonically we’re extremely happy with this album and can’t wait for other people to hear it. We feel like this is a really strong and unique album in the BELIEVER catalog and it’s something we’re definitely proud of.

So what will you hear? As we mentioned, we focused more on the overall musicality which included more instrumental layers than we used before.

Hello everyone! It’s been quite a long time since I blogged to you. It has been a busy several months for us but happy to say that we are recording the follow up to Gabriel now! The drums are just about finished and I have many tunes in the bag for the initial rhythm guitars. Once again, the tunes are quite different and when I listen to them it kind of sounds like someone else wrote them which creeped me out at first. I really like the tunes and you will be able to tell that we stepped outside our comfort zones. Always fun to do that! We hope to finish this up in the next couple months and I will keep you posted on possible release dates once we discuss with Metal Blade.

I hope all of you are having a great summer. I checked out the Cynic show in Philly last weekend and it was great to hang with Paul and Tymon again. Lots of fond memories from the “Breed Beyond” days on Roadrunner! Obviously, they were amazing. You must see them live if you can.

Well, that’s all I have for now and thanks again for hanging in there with us. If you send me Q’s, I’ll try to answer them ASAP.

Cheers,
