<dcterms:abstract>Linda Suhr is an internationally successful photographer based in Copenhagen, Denmark. She has been shooting since 1997 and her greatest passion is telling stories through the lens of her Hasselblad. Five years ago, while working on a job in South Africa she fell in love with the rugged beauty of Cape Town's coastline, the outlying hills of the wine-lands and the energy and generosity of the people. A Passion for Wine and Surf is the portrait of a lifestyle; about friendship, wine-making, surfing and delicious food.</dcterms:abstract>

Hard cover.

Linda met winemakers Miles Mossop (Tokara); Sebastian Beaumont (Beaumont Winery); Rudi Schultz (Thelema); Duncan Savage (Cape Point Winery); Adi Badenhorst (Kalmoesfontein); Sebastiaan Klaasen (Vuurberg) and chef Luca Castiglione (Limoncello Restaurant). They invited her into their homes, shared with her their delicious wines and took her to their favourite surf spots. She ate mouth-watering seafood prepared on the beach by a passionate Italian chef who runs a cosy little restaurant at the foot of Table Mountain.

The book is a brief, indulgent journey into some of life's simplest pleasures – fresh tuna on the braai, a cold glass of Chenin Blanc and the luminous beauty of vineyards on an autumn afternoon, told through beautiful imagery and energetic photographic storytelling.'This book is about my love affair with South Africa' Linda reminisces 'and the spirit and soul of this country'. These are some of the special moments that make this soulful, vivid book a tribute to a life worth living. It's a celebration of spirit and an expression of gratitude. There are many stories to be told about South Africa, but the photographs contained in this book are a reflection of one woman's experience and the many wonderful moments encountered on a journey through this incredible corner of the globe.

Handbound in leather.

David Bruce captures the faces, lifestyles and cultures of the Ju/'hoansi Bushamen of the Nyae Nyae Conservancy in the Kalahari Dessert.

His photographs stand both as art and as a sensitive portrait of a culture currently in the process of being lost to the world.

This magnificent book is a limited edition of 200.

we've got more short stories than ever - they need a nice chunk of time, a wee bit of concentration (don't be distracted by RSS feeds or the like) and a cup of tea at your side... Yummy... You might want to dim the lights or close the blinds to view the selection of surreal and esoteric short films... Slip on your headphones and close your eyes for an underwater sound adventure... And open them again to drink up the variety of visual artworks and photography... Dip into the poetry if you only have a few minutes to spare, and come back when you have more time for the rest... The wide variety of works assembled here explore the silence, absence, hesitation and irony that is ... Enjoy...

Prominent and sometimes notorious in the 50's they graced the pages of Drum
magazine which followed their exploits alongside Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela and the other now legendary names from the Drum
era. Until recently however, the Indian influence of this era in South African culture and history would be relegated into the archives. This book, by Riason Naidoo, published by Bell-Roberts Publishing, highlights this rich history, illustrated with lavish photography on the
Indian experience as featured in the pages of Drum Magazine. This 140 page Soft Cover book, featuring over 70 black and white images tells a story of a people whose culture is as diverse as it is misunderstood in South Africa.

Riason Naidoo is the Director of Collections at the South African national Gallery

<dcterms:abstract>"In tough economic times, print your own money!</dcterms:abstract>

"In tough economic times, print your own money!"

According to a recent report in the International Herald Tribune ("Rise of the Super-Rich Hits a Sobering Wall", August 20, 2009), the wealthy are not spending their money on luxuries anymore. Citing the Mei Moses Index, an indicator that tracks the price of art, the newspaper reported that spending on art has dropped 32% in the last six months. Locally, this slowdown in luxury consumption has prompted the closure of two prominent contemporary art galleries, in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Recognising the need for relief, and following the example of central bankers worldwide, Art South Africa is printing new money, which it will be giving away for free. While the new artist-designed currency will not buy you coffee, let alone pay off any pressing debts, it will guide you to the award-winning quarterly magazine. The latest Spring 2009 issue includes a detailed feature article on South Africa's burgeoning secondary market for art, by art historian Rory Bester.

Available in only one denomination, "80 Bucks" – a pointer to the magazine's R80 cover price – the Art South Africa Banknote Campaign features the contributions of four exciting young artists: Bison, Faith47, Senyol and Wesley van Eeden. The banknote flyers, which mimic the look and feel of actual currency, will be circulated at targeted art events nationally, including the upcoming Spring Art Tour (Cape Town and environs, October 1 – 4; Johannesburg October 8 – 11).

The Banknote Campaign, which launched at a private function celebrating the magazine's seventh birthday, held at wine estate Glen Carlou on September 5, is a three-way collaboration between advertising agency Young & Rubicam, Cape Town; creative art agency Word of Art; and Art South Africa magazine.

To coincide with the launch of this guerrilla marketing campaign, which also includes a series of street posters featuring the banknotes, Art South Africa, in association with Word of Art, is offering limited edition collectable prints featuring the banknote designs. The prints, limited to 50 each and individually signed, are priced at R999.

"Art South Africa has traditionally taken a very restrained approach to self-promotion, allowing word of mouth to guide the magazine to new readers," says Art South Africa editor, Sean O'Toole. "For our seventh birthday issue, a milestone in many ways for a niche media title such as this, we decided to look to Cape Town's unheralded creative talent for inspiration and help."

The Banknote Campaign follows on an earlier collaboration between Art South Africa and Young & Rubicam, Cape Town, who in December 2008 devised a poster asking passersby to drop off illegal firearms at a police station. The campaign coincided with an issue of the magazine focussing on the "Awuleth' Umshini Wami" song popularised by President Jacob Zuma.

Says Art South Africa's publisher, Brendon Bell-Roberts: "I think the Banknote Campaign will energise the magazine's existing brand profile, while also break down some of the antagonisms towards street art amongst high art purists."

The banknote flyers, which mimic the look and feel of actual currency, will be circulated at targeted art events nationally, including the upcoming Spring Art Tour (Cape Town and environs, October 1 – 4; Johannesburg October 8 – 11).

The Banknote

Campaign, which launched at a private function celebrating the magazine's seventh birthday, held at wine estate Glen Carlou on September 5, is a three-way collaboration between advertising agency Young & Rubicam, Cape Town; creative art agency Word of Art; and Art South Africa magazine.

"Art
South Africa

has traditionally taken a very restrained approach to self-promotion, allowing word of mouth to guide the magazine to new readers," says Art South Africa editor, Sean O'Toole. "For our seventh birthday issue, a milestone in many ways for a niche media title such as this, we decided to look to Cape Town's unheralded creative talent for inspiration and help."

The Banknote

Campaign follows on an earlier collaboration between Art South Africa and Young & Rubicam, Cape Town, who in December 2008 devised a poster asking passersby to drop off illegal firearms at a police station. The campaign coincided with an issue of the magazine focussing on the "Awuleth' Umshini Wami" song popularised by President Jacob Zuma.

Says Art

South Africa's publisher, Brendon Bell-Roberts: "I think the Banknote Campaign will energise the magazine's existing brand profile, while also break down some of the antagonisms towards street art amongst high art purists."

The latest issue offer a compelling mix of irreverent fun and necessary pause.

"Cecil Skotnes was admired and respected for his qualities as a human being, for his generosity of spirit, and for the major role he played in nurturing the talents of lesser-privileged fellow South Africans," writes Esmé Berman in her tribute to Skotnes, whose legacy is celebrated by a range of writers and artists in the opening pages.

The new of Art South Africa issue includes familiar stalwarts, Maggie Davey and Thembinkosi Goniwe offering more of their opinions, while Clive Kellner writes for the first time, discussing the diverse threads of twentieth century avant-gardism in an exhibition he produced shortly before the end of his tenure as chief curator of the Johannesburg Art Gallery.

A range of key practitioners are profiled in detail, including wunderkind composer Philip Miller, leading photographer Santu Mofokeng, map-maker and relationship advisor Titus Matiyane, sculptor and consummate draughtsperson Deborah Bell, also the Durban-based sculptor Andries Botha.

Art South Africa's commitment to showcasing young, emerging talent in our "Bright Young Things" pages sees the spotlight fall on highflyer Dineo Bopape, with Cape Town artists Chad Rossouw and Michael Taylor also enjoying attention. In his contribution Andrew Lamprecht wonders how much further Avant Car Guard can push their ticket.

Three prominent women artists – Marlene Dumas, Penny Siopis and Candice Breitz – lead readers into the reviews section. Also under review: David Goldblatt by Patricia Hayes, the Joburg Art Fair by Rory Bester, and Ruth Simbao appraises Spier's recent Infecting the City programme of public performances.

The June 2009 print edition of Art South Africa is currently available at leading bookstores. It is also available by subscription.

<dcterms:abstract>Taking its cue from Paul Schmulbach's 1974 picture of paparazzi photographer Ron Galella stalking actor Marlon Brando, the new issue of Snapped asks a simple question: Has Nelson Mandela ever wanted to land a five-finger sandwich on a photographer's mug? Likely not, but being one of the most photographed people in the world he has every reason to want to. Snapped explores the camera's relationship to and with Mandela, as narrated by a diversity of famous voices.</dcterms:abstract>

Likely not, but being one of the most photographed people in the world he has every reason to want to. Snapped explores the camera's relationship to and with Mandela, as narrated by a diversity of famous voices.

Five essays and an interview complement the Mandela story.

Pieter Hugo, winner of the KLM Paul Huf Award and Arles Discovery Award in 2008, talks to Federica Angelucci about control, collecting photography books, Messina/Musina, gothic music, David Goldblatt and Richard Misrach.

Of the five portfolios showcased, three are rooted in musical culture. Durban-based Roger Jardine, introduces some of his home city's musicians, some well known, others not. Michael Wyeth, trained at Michaelis School for Fine Art in the 1970s, presents a series of unseen images of The Base, a popular mixed-race nightclub and live music venue in the heart of apartheid-era Cape Town. Jamel Shabazz, one of hip hop's earliest chroniclers, describes New York City during the 1970s and 80s – before the scourge of crack.

As part of a comprehensive review of the fourth Month of Photography, held in Cape Town recently, we showcase Araminta de Clermont's portraits of former prisoners.

The cover, a portrait of two Eritrean exiles living in North America, is by Dawit L. Petros. Born in Asmara, capital of the East African state of Eritrea, Petros was raised in Canada, schooled in Boston, and is now resident in New York. His photographic practice has evolved from straight documentary portraiture, notably a series of portraits of North American-Eritreans, to encompass aspects of conceptual photography and performance art. He recently held a self-titled one-person show at Alexander Gray Associates, New York.

Looking back to recent shows that intrigued and/or inspired, Snapped reviews the work of Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, Jodi Bieber, Monique Pelser, Inge Prins, Stephen Shore and Hiroshi Sugimoto.

As of issue three, Snapped is available nationally through all Exclusive Books outlets, as well as from select independent bookstores, galleries and boutique retailers.

Bring me my machine gun

Editor: Sean O'Toole
Bell-Roberts Publishing, December 2008

112 pages.

"Bring me my machinegun"

War chant, liberation anthem, folksong, there are many ways to describe "Umshini wami". Popularised by president-in-waiting Jacob Zuma, the Zulu language struggle chant, which loosely translates as "Bring me my machinegun", is vigorously discussed by a range of prominent writers in the summer edition of Art South Africa, now on shelves nationally.

Cuing the debate: a cover image by artist Anton Kannemeyer, a deadpan portrait of Jacob Zuma. The work, customised especially for the popular end-of-year edition of Art South Africa by the artist, was exhibited to acclaim in New York and Cape Town during 2008.

Introduced by a custom graphic created by Durban-based studio disturbance design, the "Umshini wami" special focus presents itself shortly after Kannemeyer's striking cover and includes a range of prominent contributors. They include WISER writing fellow Kevin Bloom, publisher Maggie Davey, well-known journalist Fred de Vries, former NPA investigator Ivor Powell, poet Lesego Rampolokeng, art theorist Colin Richards and Cape Town writer André Wiesner.

Also featured is Bulgarian artist Nedko Solakov's project Discussion (Property), an investigation into the legal dispute over ownership of a Bulgarian derivative of the AK-47. The project was originally exhibited on curator Robert Storr's Venice Biennale show in 2007.

Also in this issue: Marilyn Martin, formerly the director of Iziko SA National Gallery, offers an overdue and in-depth look at the evolution of painterly abstraction in South Africa, with additional insight offered by art historian and dealer Michael Stevenson. Respected editor and critic Shaun de Waal presents a new short fiction.

Art South Africa's focus on young, emerging talent, or "Bright Young Things" as the section has come to be known, this issue spotlights dancer Dada Masilo, French-Moroccan conceptual artist Latifa Echakhch, Cape Town sculptor Stuart Bird and Johannesburg avant-rockers, the Blk Jks, set for big things in London and New York.

Taking as its starting point a great number of group exhibitions held nationally, the reviews section leads with a piece by art historian Rory Historian. This focus on collectivist presentations is paired with a focus on recent one-person shows by Robin Rhode in London, Mikhael Subotzky in New York, Pieter Hugo in Amsterdam, Karel Nel in London, and Berni Searle in Cape Town.

The print edition of the December 2008 issue of Art South Africa is currently available at leading bookstores. It is also available by subscription. Exclusive online content, including reviews of exhibitions by artists Sue Pam-Grant, Judith Mason, Nigel Mullins and Lawrence Lemaoana, is available at artsouthafrica.com
