Nanette Nel recently graduated from the University of Stellenbosh with a Masters of Arts in Visual Arts Cum Laude. Nel has also studied at the Gerrit Rietveld School of design in Amsterdam.

In this body of work the artist explores the handbag as subject. She concentrates on social, cultural and personal history in the conception of her art works. The exhibition consists of four collections divided into two groups – The Mielie Collection and the Protea Collection – which are culture specific within the South African context; and the the Body-Bag collection and the Secrets Collection. Nel's art practice and art works exist within the boundaries of contemporary jewellery and fine art practice and these meticulously crafted objects are an absolute pleasure to behold!

GALLERY: Andrea Mariconti - No More Me

31 year old Italian artist Andrea Mariconti lives and works in Milan. For this exhibition Mariconti has produced 20 new works, each 35 x 50cm using mixed media on paper.

Mariconti's work is informed by memories - who we were and who we are. He paints using white oil paint and ash, a material which cements the idea of our past and our future and at the same time belongs to the land. For Mariconti colour is a hindrance because it distracts. Grey is sufficient for him. A grey which is not a colour but a material (mostly ash and sometimes cement) and which structures or shapes the painting and gives body through variations of its thickness. White and ash, flashes of active light on the inertness of matter, will take you anywhere; and the landscape, thus translated in an elementary alternative, becomes readable as if it were a written piece.

After graduating from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera (major in visual arts) in 2001, he was appointed as assistant professor at NABA - Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti - Milan in 2003.

In 2005, Mariconti was invited to design the stage setting and the costumes for Mozart's "The Magic Flute" which was performed at the famed Suntory Hall in Tokyo.

During 2005 and 2006, Mariconti spent a lot of time in war ravaged Kosovo, teaching art therapy to child victims of trauma. He has also taught drama to disabled students. In 2005 Mariconti attended a workshop held by Anselm Kiefer during the period in which Kiefer was setting up his Sette Palazzi Celesti (The Seven Heavenly Palaces) in the Hangar Bicocca, Milan. He graduated in scenography from Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in 2006.

Andrea Mariconti continues his art therapy programme in South Africa. At the end of June 2009, he will be hosting a 3 day workshop for 20 children from the the Rainbow Centre in Gugulethu, Cape Town. In 2009, Leonard Shapiro met with artist Andrea Mariconti and his gallerist Federico Rui. They discussed the possibility of Mariconti conducting a creative workshop with South African children in need, in order to assist them in coping with their stresses and traumas. In addition, Mariconti would exhibit his own work at a gallery in Cape Town. This project was facilitated by Leonard Shapiro who first met Mariconti in Milan in 2008. Shapiro identified Ikamva Labantu as a deserving organisation to host the creative workshop with children, and the Bell-Roberts Gallery as an appropriate gallery to exhibit Mariconti's work.

Mariconti has exhibited extensively throughout Europe and also in Japan. This will be his first exhibition in South Africa.

We are very excited to be hosting 2 exceptional group exhibitions at the gallery which open on Thursday 16 May at 17h30. From the Mantlepiece features sculptures by acclaimed jeweler/sculptors Geraldine Fenn, Philippe Bousquet and Marchant van Tonder. In Black and White features several artists who have produced artworks quite literally "in black and white".

Snapped, the natty little photography quarterly from Bell-Roberts Publishing, is three issues old.

Taking its cue from Paul Schmulbach's 1974 picture of paparazzi photographer Ron Galella stalking actor Marlon Brando, the new issue of Snapped asks a simple question: Has Nelson Mandela ever wanted to land a five-finger sandwich on a photographer's mug? Likely not, but being one of the most photographed people in the world he has every reason to want to. Snapped explores the camera's relationship to and with Mandela, as narrated by a diversity of famous voices.

Five essays and an interview complement the Mandela story.

Pieter Hugo, winner of the KLM Paul Huf Award and Arles Discovery Award in 2008, talks to Federica Angelucci about control, collecting photography books, Messina/Musina, gothic music, David Goldblatt and Richard Misrach.

Of the five portfolios showcased, three are rooted in musical culture. Durban-based Roger Jardine, introduces some of his home city's musicians, some well known, others not. Michael Wyeth, trained at Michaelis School for Fine Art in the 1970s, presents a series of unseen images of The Base, a popular mixed-race nightclub and live music venue in the heart of apartheid-era Cape Town. Jamel Shabazz, one of hip hop's earliest chroniclers, describes New York City during the 1970s and 80s – before the scourge of crack.

As part of a comprehensive review of the fourth Month of Photography, held in Cape Town recently, we showcase Araminta de Clermont's portraits of former prisoners.

The cover, a portrait of two Eritrean exiles living in North America, is by Dawit L. Petros. Born in Asmara, capital of the East African state of Eritrea, Petros was raised in Canada, schooled in Boston, and is now resident in New York. His photographic practice has evolved from straight documentary portraiture, notably a series of portraits of North American-Eritreans, to encompass aspects of conceptual photography and performance art. He recently held a self-titled one-person show at Alexander Gray Associates, New York.

Looking back to recent shows that intrigued and/or inspired, Snapped reviews the work of Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, Jodi Bieber, Monique Pelser, Inge Prins, Stephen Shore and Hiroshi Sugimoto.

"Bring me my machinegun"

War chant, liberation anthem, folksong, there are many ways to describe "Umshini wami". Popularised by president-in-waiting Jacob Zuma, the Zulu language struggle chant, which loosely translates as "Bring me my machinegun", is vigorously discussed by a range of prominent writers in the summer edition of Art South Africa, now on shelves nationally.

Cuing the debate: a cover image by artist Anton Kannemeyer, a deadpan portrait of Jacob Zuma. The work, customised especially for the popular end-of-year edition of Art South Africa by the artist, was exhibited to acclaim in New York and Cape Town during 2008.

Introduced by a custom graphic created by Durban-based studio disturbance design, the "Umshini wami" special focus presents itself shortly after Kannemeyer's striking cover and includes a range of prominent contributors. They include WISER writing fellow Kevin Bloom, publisher Maggie Davey, well-known journalist Fred de Vries, former NPA investigator Ivor Powell, poet Lesego Rampolokeng, art theorist Colin Richards and Cape Town writer André Wiesner.

Also featured is Bulgarian artist Nedko Solakov's project Discussion (Property), an investigation into the legal dispute over ownership of a Bulgarian derivative of the AK-47. The project was originally exhibited on curator Robert Storr's Venice Biennale show in 2007.

Also in this issue: Marilyn Martin, formerly the director of Iziko SA National Gallery, offers an overdue and in-depth look at the evolution of painterly abstraction in South Africa, with additional insight offered by art historian and dealer Michael Stevenson. Respected editor and critic Shaun de Waal presents a new short fiction.

Art South Africa's focus on young, emerging talent, or "Bright Young Things" as the section has come to be known, this issue spotlights dancer Dada Masilo, French-Moroccan conceptual artist Latifa Echakhch, Cape Town sculptor Stuart Bird and Johannesburg avant-rockers, the Blk Jks, set for big things in London and New York.

Taking as its starting point a great number of group exhibitions held nationally, the reviews section leads with a piece by art historian Rory Historian. This focus on collectivist presentations is paired with a focus on recent one-person shows by Robin Rhode in London, Mikhael Subotzky in New York, Pieter Hugo in Amsterdam, Karel Nel in London, and Berni Searle in Cape Town.
