1) Sonny from Coco Puffs Is he a Rooster? A Woodpecker? A cuckoo? What kind of bird is Sonny? Whatever he was, Sonny clearly had an undiagnosed behavioral disorder, because every time he happened across any Coco Puffs, he would go completely insane, bounce around and say “I’m CUCKOO for Coco Puffs!!” until he would be shoved offscreen. It was a theme for kids’ cereal mascots to be deprived of the product they were advertising. 2. Count Chocula (Bobble Head Bank) Count Chocula was one of the first of the five General Mills Monster Cereal line. Count Chocula and the rest of the monsters were known for acting all scary, and then usually being spooked by something totally non-scary. I think the only difference between Count Chocula and Coco Puffs was marshmallows.

3. Dig ‘Em from Sugar Smacks/Honey Smacks/Smacks There was a time when cereals were actually up-front about what was in ‘em. They just flat-out told you: We have sugar. There was a time for a while when Dig ‘Em, the frog mascot for Sugar Smacks, was axed in favor of a bear when the cereal decided to change its name to – get this – Honey Smacks! It was called “Frankenberry Stool,” and was the inspiration for a secondary plotline in Stephen King’s novel Cujo.

5. Silly Rabbit (from Trix) When I was a kid, Trix came in different-colored spheres of sugary, fruity-flavored corn that were absolutely magical. About 20 years ago – most likely because food manufacturers were making generic versions of Trix that parents were then pouring into their unsuspecting kids’ old Trix boxes so they’d think they were eating the high-quality stuff, when there was really no difference.

About 20 years ago, the cereal makers wised up and one-upped the generics. Suddenly the real stuff had swirls, or extra marshmallows, or glittery bits. In Trix’s case, the multi-colored balls were changed to multi-colored fruit shapes. What does any of this have to do with the mascot? Nothing. I just wish for once some kid would take pity on him and give the poor rabbit some Trix. Although maybe it’s because the cleanup would be annoying. It’s late at night, I’m away for the weekend, but I wanted you to see this short clip from Pink Ribbons Inc., a documentary about the pink Ribbon and how the Komen Foundation for the cure has turned an epidemic into a massive marketing opportunity. I love Bro-comedies. Give me Entourage over Cougar Town any day. There are some out there that have outstanding writing, character development and are – most importantly – freakin’ hilarious.

Men at Work is one of those comedies. When I had the opportunity to preview the pilot, I thought “Oh, great – another office comedy. Yeah, that’s totally all we need.” But it isn’t.

The pilot focuses on Milo (That 70′s Show‘s Danny Masterson), whose girlfriend has decided to break up with him. His friends (played by James Lesure, Michael Cassidy, and Adam Busch) decide to help him quickly get over his breakup and jump right out there into single bro-land.

We’re also introduced to Neil’s (Busch) struggles in learning how to communicate with his girlfriend in the bedroom; Tyler’s (Cassidy) superhero-like ability to use words to take down the D-bag in the bar (calling him names like ‘Trucker Hat’ and ‘Dane Cook’; and Gibbs’ (Lesure) skills at smooth-talking the ladies.

I laughed. I really did. I’m watching it again and I’m still laughing. If your comedy style leans toward How I Met Your Mother, The Hangover and Hot Tub Time Machine, this is the show for you. Check out the premiere on TBS tonight at 10/9 Central! Should be a great summer-filler comedy!

This week the mowers forgot to put our little partition back on our half-fence, so Sebastian took the opportunity to roam down the street.

I’ve written stories about Sebastian’s escapes before; sometimes he likes to jolt out when the mailman has a zillion boxes to bring, or when the Schwan’s guy has brought us something – or just whenever the door is open for long enough to make a secret escape.

Usually he’s great about staying in his place. When pizza guys and couriers stop by, he’s always ordered to stay five feet back. But occasionally, he starts to wander.

When he went wandering this week, I immediately got into my car and drove it to where my street intersects with one of the city’s busiest streets. I could tell he was just about to decide whether to walk over to the apartments next door or brave the rush-hour traffic. Immediately Sebastian associated my moving car with the thought of “mom’s leaving, and it’s not going to be with me, and she’s probaby going to hang out with other dogs.” So he started paying attention.

I unrolled the windows of my car, turned back toward the house, and drove at an ice cream truck’s pace, yelling, “BYE! BYYYYYYYYE!” the entire time. Sebastian trailed behind my car.

I opened the car door and Sebastian immediately trotted back as if to say “awesome, now I can go play Red Rover with myself again.” I closed the car door, still inside, and Sebastian knew I meant business. So I got out, asked what was going on with him, and said I was going into the house for some bacon and water and he could join me. (To Sebastian, EVERY soft, meaty, stinky treat is “bacon.”)

So he followed me in, and I went out to my mom and next-door neighbor, who were hiding behind the neighbor’s car so Sebastian wouldn’t see. It was truly a sight to behold, and an exercise that once again, if you put the fear of driving away or depriving your dog of his favorite food, you can get him to do anything.

The internal speakers on my netbook just aren't that good, and I have to make leaps and bounds in order to hook up my old desktop speakers to this little guy.
