I have recently completed work on the Gloucestershire Lifestyles website, Gloucestershire Lifestyles is a charity based in Gloucestershire they offer care to people with physical and metal health disabilities.
The site has been created using php and connects to a mySQL database which holds all the content. there is a background admin section that provides CMS and the ability to add news and events.
As always Simon from Deltacubed has had a helping hand in getting the site finished.

Hello there good people.

This post is the first of a series of posts that will be looking into the awesome range of open source software out there used in the design community.

I will be starting of by reviewing and giving overviews of two of my favourite applications, Google sketch up and Blender.

Both these application other a wide range of tools for creating 3d models, animations and so much more. If you are new to 3d modeling scene and would like choose an application that is both easy to use and has a large following then sketch up would be a great place to start, so in this first post I give quick summary of sketch up.

Although sketchup is extremely limited when put in comparison to Blender, you will find that its simple palletes and easy to use drawing tools will let you create models extremely quick.

I have found that sketch up excels when it comes to architetural models. You can import PDF’s and CAD files on to a document and use the tape measure tool to create precise guides for planning out your project. Also the fact that model points can snap to other model points and also to guides makes sketch up easy to place models together.

Sketch up may be lacking a render engine but there is a lot of third party support out there and there are several preset styles that come packaged that can effectively present your models.

In summary if you are new to 3d modeling then sketch up is a great starting point, if you where to jump into blender without any knowledge of 3d modeling you will find your self lost very quickly.

I work in a marketing department for a Modular Building Company that specialize in Data Centre Facilities and Healthcare Facilities. A big part of our department is writing proposals for prospective clients and providing concept drawings and building plans. I have worked with quite a few 3d modeling packages in the past, mainly high end applications, these are usually expensive and require a certain amount of training.

I have found that Googles sketch up provides a very basic but highly effective solution for creating all types of 3d models and has a great library of open source plug ins and components that can be found on the google sketch up market place.

The only thing lacking in the default version of sketch up is any kind of rendering engine, after looking through many options I finally stumbled upon kerkythea, this is a high quality rendering engine that is very easy to use and works with both Sketch up, Blender and other popular 3d applications.
The model pictured with this article is for concept Data Centre created for the company I work for BladeRoom Data Centre Group
and was rendered up in only 3 hours at a resolution of 4646px wide and 3638px deep.

In the next few weeks I will be working on a quick start tutorial for using sketch up files with Kerkythea.
