FORT HOOD, Texas —For three Oregonians serving as public information officers, the most difficult calls didn't come from the media, but from family members whose relatives were on the Fort Hood base during the shootings.The three soldiers, all recently returned from the same unit in Iraq, were on the base Thursday when suspected gunman Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, allegedly killed 13 soldiers and a civilian.

FORT HOOD, Texas — A former Redmond resident who was one of the first victims in a mass shooting at the U. S. Army base was removed from the Intensive Care Unit and was able to walk for a short while Monday afternoon.Shawn Manning, 33, was one of 29 people injured when a gunman opened fire at Fort Hood on Thursday and killed 13 people. Manning was shot six times: once in the chest, three times in the abdomen, once in the leg and once in the foot, according to a statement released by his family on Monday.

For Bend's Erica Cardwell, success in rugby was nearly instantaneous.And her progression — is skyrocketing.Cardwell, a first-year player, made her mark last fall playing for the Bend Vixen in Rugby Oregon's high school girls' league. She led the team to a 10-3 debut season and to fourth place in the state. She scored more than half of her team's points, with 42 tries (goals), for 210 points.

Restaurant slated for the former Deep site

A new restaurant, 5 Spice Fusion and Sushi, will open in December in the vacant space that once housed Deep, a similarly themed Japanese fusion restaurant that closed in January.The restaurant, in the O. C. Henkle Building at 821 N. W. Wall St., will be a sushi bar that also serves Asian-European fusion dishes, said co-owner and Chef Bi Long. The restaurant will use organic, local, healthy food, said co-owner Lilian Chu, the former owner of the Hong Kong Restaurant on Southeast Third Street.
