FORT HOOD, Texas —For three Oregonians serving as public information officers, the most difficult calls didn't come from the media, but from family members whose relatives were on the Fort Hood base during the shootings. The three soldiers, all recently returned from the same unit in Iraq, were on the base Thursday when suspected gunman Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, allegedly killed 13 soldiers and a civilian.

Anyone who has dined at an Original Pancake House has likely seen a server delivering a piping hot plate filled with a single, fluffy caramelized apple pancake. The dish is a staple of any restaurant in The Original Pancake House franchise, and it’s one of the best-selling items at the Bend and Redmond locations, owned by Ken and Betsy Mauch. On any given day, the two Central Oregon Original Pancake House locations are packed, due in part to items like the apple pancake.

People who know a little about yoga may think of it as a series of body poses. Downward-facing dog, mountain pose, warrior. But for Bend resident Amanda Stuermer, yoga is about much more. Yoga is not only a way of staying physically fit, it is a way of life that inspires her to give back to the community.

Stuffing is one of the stars of the Thanksgiving table. It's delicious whether made with simple ingredients such as celery, onions and a few herbs, or jazzed up with sausage, dried fruits and nuts, oysters, or hot peppers. We discussed this classic side dish via e-mail with Christopher Kimball, founder and editor of Cook's Illustrated and Cook's Country magazines, and host of “America's Test Kitchen,” now in its eighth season on public television.

For most athletes, success is a progression. For Bend's Erica Cardwell, success in rugby was nearly instantaneous. And her progression — is skyrocketing.Cardwell, a first-year player, made her mark last fall playing for the Bend Vixen in Rugby Oregon's high school girls' league. She led the team to a 10-3 debut season and to fourth place in the state. She scored more than half of her team's points, with 42 tries (goals), for 210 points.
