$5 art party is back at Underground SF for the awesome Haight Street Art Walk! Check it out...

"Now, we don't usually do this but... let us break you off with a
little piece of the $5 ART PARTY AUGUST HAIGHT ART WALK EDITION
WOOOOO!

Friends, we'd like to welcome you once again to the $5 Art Party! For
August's party we're going back, way back, to UNDERGROUND SF and the
Lower Haight Art Walk! The last time we threw the Art Party on the
same night as the Art Walk it was a blast, we're hoping to have even
more fun this time!

Nubs: The $5 Art Parties are a celebration of affordable art. Anyone can
bring art, trade art, buy art, but mainly we just want to have fun. As
always, if you have some art you'd like to sell... bring it! Anything
and everything is welcome, all we ask is that you price your art at
$20 or less. If you're bringing art, we ask that you check in with
us so we'll have a good idea of the number of artists coming so we can
accommodate. If you don't know until the last minute, that's
okay too... bring art anyway!

This party is extra long! The Haight Art Walk is from 7-10pm, and then

a cuddly creature wall!

Benny and I have to admit, we have always secretly loved the rustic look of bear rugs and deer antlers/heads in a cabin setting. That being said, our admiration of such pieces has always been tainted by the fact that these decorations had once been alive and breathing. It's just a bit creepy, plus they always seem like they are staring at you plotting their revenge! So needless to say we were stoked to came across the idea (stolen from the super talented Megan Quirolo, check her amazing creations at the next $5 art praty!!) of taking stuffed animals and making them into a cute and friendly animal trophys!

Here is an easy little tutorial to help you make your very own creature wall! So head on down to your favorite toy store and "catch" yourself a cuddly lion or a plush panda or a fuzzy bear, anything really! All the How Tos after the jump...

Step 1: gather supplies

Hunt down these supplies...scissors, stuffed animal, hot glue gun (or any other thick glue that will adhere cardboard to fabric), cardboard, marker, xacto (optional), cardstock (optional) and brown paint/spray paint (optional).

Step 2: create the mount

To start the project off you need to create a mount for the head of your stuffed animal. Take your piece of cardboard and draw out your mount shape. You can be as creative as you like here, but we ended up leaning towards a more classic look here!

Next simply cut out your mount shape. We used our xacto knife for this so we got super clean lines, but feel free to use scissors instead.

Step 3: decorate (optional)

This next step is totally optional but we think it's the most fun! Now you get to decorate the trophy mount however you desire. We wanted ours to look as realistic as possible so we created a sweet little woodgrain stencil!

helpful hint: if you want to create your own stencil all you need is a marker/pen, some cardstock, an xacto and brown paint/spray paint. With the marker draw out your woodgrain pattern on the cardstock (this is really very simple just slightly curvy lines in a somewhat parallel arrangement that occasionally circle an area). Next using your xacto carefully cut out the pattern drawn. Once cut simply take your paint or spray paint and stencil your trophy mount. Easy!

Step 4: behead and glue

After creating the mount, all you have to do is attach your stuffed animal! For this we first need to behead our dear creature. Using your scissors cut directly below, not above, the seam that attaches the head of your stuffed animal to its body. This seam is what your will be glueing directly to the mount. Once the head is detached we recommend taking a little extra stuffing out of the animal's body and filling the head with as much stuffing as possible. This will help the head keep its shape.

Now that you have the head stuffed to the brim, simply glue the head to your mount using your hot glue gun and let cool. Lastly, locate a wall in home to showcase your new humane trophy creature and hang!

Voila! A rustic cuteness everyone will love!

In celebration of March being the craftiest month of the year, benny and I have been crafting every chance we get. But this leaves us with a lots of awesome homemade goodies just waiting to be sent to a loving home. So as we promised, throughout the month of March we will be doing homemade giveaways every week!

recycled zipper earrings

Last week for the $5 Art Party, Benny and I brought you some homemade earrings created from vintage zippers. We are really excited with how sweet they came out and since they were so easy to make we thought we would share how it's done. This is a perfect colorful and crafty accessory for spring or a little gift for your love! Enjoy!

All the how tos after the jump...

Step 1: gather supplies

This is actually a really quick project with not much needed...zippers (you can easily steal the zipper heads off a couple pairs of old pants as we have done here), permanent glue, earring posts with pads (easily found on etsy or at any jewelry/craft supply store like Michael's), earring backings, scissors and spray paint

Step 2: cannibalize and color

To begin we must take all the zipper heads off the zipper teeth which is done simply but snipping the zipper fabric between the teeth on both sided of an open zipper and then zip up the zipper pulling the head free of the teeth at the snipped points. Easy!

Next comes the fun part, coloring your zippers! Using your spray paint color the zipper heads whatever color you fancy and let dry. We went with two different shades of orangey brown.

Step 3: gluing and done!

Once the zipper heads are dry take your permenant glue and attach the earring posts to their back. We recommend using something that is sure to work well with metal, like the industrial adhesive E6000, which can be found at most craft stores.

To insure a good bond between the glue, post and zipper let glue set for up to 24 hours. Once the posts are set you have a fabulous new pair of homemade earrings to show off!

This must be said...if you were not at the $5 art party last friday then you seriously missed out! It was by far the best parties so far and just makes us that much more excited for the next time! (we have been hearing rumors of making this a monthly event...so perfect!) As always there were some truly talented artists and crafters who brought the most amazing goodies to sell. Benny went a little crazy trading our art for theirs but we could not be happier with our new arty treasures! Check out all of our scores...

spare change makes sweet tees

Kelly's boyfriend hates all change except quarters, what he believes is the only "useful" coin. So day after day we watch him come home and pile all his pennies, dimes and nickels in a sweet vintage tin never to be thought of again. We could take the time to roll the coins and take them down to a bank, but what is the fun in that? So we decided they must go the crafty way! We grabbed a handful of change, some spray paint and got to work creating some homemade printed tees in three simple steps!!

Step 1: Gather Supplies

To begin, start gathering all the spare change you can find from dirty pant pockets or the floormats of your car or try the classic trick of looking through your couch cushions! After that all you'll need to grab is a spare t-shirt (preferable one your already bored with) and some spray paint.

Step 2: create your pattern

Next just layout the change in whatever pattern you choose. You can make pretty much any pattern, but one of our favorites is the snowflake or star design...

Step 3: add the color and done

Finally just spray the shirt in whatever matter/pattern you choose, making sure you color the coins and the tee around the coins throughly. helpful hint: use colors that are similar in color to your tee and it will look more like it has been dyed that way then spray painted!!

Let dry and remove the coins to discovery your sweet new tee-shirt!!

Benny and I have always dreamed of one day splurging on a really fancy hotel. You know the ones that care more about aesthetics and being arty than your overall comfort. Well if we can ever afford this, we would definitely make HotelPhilosophy's newest hotel creation in Milan, Maison Moschino, our desired destination!! Not only do we love his fashion for its color and occasional whim but Moschino's overall love for simple fantasy. With this hotel he takes a very simple ordinary interior and makes it fantastic with just a little bit of surrealism. I mean really, who wouldn't want to sleep in a giant ball gown or a bed of roses!
