In 2008, Tommy Caldwell and Justen Sjong completed the first ascent of El Cap’s Magic Mushroom (VI 5.14a) considered to be the hardest big wall free route in the world. This slideshow is a behind-the-scenes, no-holds-barred account of the Caldwell-Sjong ascent and a glimpse into how a hard free climb gets done on the big stone. By Justen Sjong.

Please join us for a celebration of authentic Himalayan food and culture. The evening focuses on the unique, diverse cultures of the high Himalaya, and climbing in the Everest Region of Nepal. Featuring photos and outline of some of our local Himalayan community including Passang Lamu Sherpa, the youngest women to climb Mount Everest, 1^st ascent of Nangpai Gosam II and first woman to teach climbing in Nepal; Also Fabrizio Zangrilli, who is likely the best alpine climber in the world today. He has guided the highest mountains in the world and will be the first to guide K2 (2^nd highest peak in the world) this summer. Fabrizio and Sherpa Journeys is guiding an unprecedented journey up a peak that is accessible to all climbers called Island Peak in the Everest Region 6189m (or a tad over 20,000 ft). Fabrizio wishes to share his love of alpine climbing with all people who are interested to go and will add this climb to his expeditions after Pamori and Cholatse in the same region.

The three traveled to Mount Edgar (6818 meters/22,368 feet) on the Minya Konka massif, Western Sichuan Province, China. They embarked from base camp on May 20, 2009. There hasn’t been any contact with the climbers since.

Copp and Dash are highly experienced alpinists and professional climbers who have many years experience tackling big unclimbed mountains around the world. They received the Mugs Stump Award grant for this expedition from the American Alpine Club in 2008 but had to delay the climb until now, due to political unrest in the region. Johnson (a photographer with Sender Films) was accompanying Dash and Copp to base camp and did not intend to attempt the climb to the summit.

On June 4, 2009, a small party of experienced climbers, organized through the Sichuan Mountaineering Association, arrived in “base camp” and are preparing to continue up to the “advanced base camp” to gather information. Search efforts are being professionally coordinated by friends and colleagues in Boulder and more climbers from China and the US are being deployed to the area. Developing information will be shared as soon as it is available.

“We’re taking all the necessary steps to gather information about the climbers’ whereabouts and haven’t identified any complications beyond their lateness. Although we’re concerned, in alpine climbing it’s not unusual to for climbers to be delayed or out of contact for this long. We are still hopeful,” says Robb Shurr, spokesperson for the search effort.

This search operation will be costly and any financial assistance that can be made will be incredibly helpful in terms of mounting the best search and rescue operation possible. Please donate to the search fund now.

The Golden Community Rodeo is a grass-roots effort that brings together whitewater enthusiasts, local residents and businesses, and industry representatives to participate in this community event. The GCR is organized, managed, and run exclusively by local volunteers whose common characteristic is the hope that all levels of boaters will feel welcomed at this event – from the meekest “newbie” to the local heroes. Our goal is to provide fun events where everyone is welcome, and everyone is supported.

Each year this series has grown, with each event attended by 40+ paddlers and 50+ spectators. The original organizers worked hard to get the local community involved and have encouraged all paddlers to take ownership of this event by competing and working to plan and organize the event. The results are tremendous! We now have a supportive group of local boaters who are working hard to put together the logistics and gather prizes to offer to our competitors and spectators.

Apr 25 - COSMIC Rando Race - "Marmot Grind" at A-Basin

The Marmot Grind is an uphill, downhill adventure race designed to introduce new participants to backcountry skiing as well as challenge the veteran skier. Races are modeled after European randonee events with competitors beginning on foot and running to clip into their skis. Athletes skin uphill on a challenging course and race down to the finish. Race category vertical is approximately 4,500 ft, recreational 2,000ft.

Come over to the Colorado School of Mines this Friday at 7pm for the charity showing of Chuck Fryberger's new film "PURE". Tickets are $7 and 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Elizabethfontaine Primary School in Rocklands, South Africa. This school serves the children of the farm workers in the Rocklands area.

This well-managed and award-winning school sits in the middle of one of the best bouldering areas on the planet, Rocklands. As wave after wave of climbers travel to Rocklands to test their skills against classic boulder problems, visitors and locals alike brace for the first wave of access restrictions, closures, and regulations. Similar to Hueco Tanks, Rocklands is covered with archeologic sites and pictographs. Taking an interest in the community is one of the best ways to build a good reputations for climbers and will go a long ways to keeping access open in the future.

They are the last Tuesday of the month April thru October (4/28, 5/26, 6/30, 7/28, 8/25, 9/29, 10/27). Be sure to stop by the Golden Bike Shop mechanics stand for free minor tunes to your ride.

The Golden Cruise is free and open to all ages. Festivities start at Woody's at 5:30pm and the ride leaves at 7:00pm. Post-Cruise celebration at Woody's immediately afterwords - raffle, prizes, drink specials, etc!

"Here we go! Head out for the first 'official' cruise of the year! This time we have schwag AND a sweet cruiser to give away! Show up at Woody's around 5:30 for a little pre-cruise fun. The cruise winds through downtown Golden and starts around 7:00. After, back to Woody's to bask in the afterglow!

Also: Hey guys wanted to let you know we will doing things on the porch a little different this year. We won't have a server on the porch, but we will have a couple N.B. kegs. South Platte River Cleanup / Sunday April 26

The 3rd annual South Platte River Cleanup is on Sunday, April 26th in celebration of Earth Day in Denver, Colorado. This is an all volunteer event to pick up trash along the South Platte River and Bike Paths.

Last year, we saw over 200 rafters, kayakers, cyclists and pedestrians that successfully removed over 2 TONS of garbage from the river and bike path. The event garnered local and regional media coverage as the lead story on several news channels, as well as appearing on the front page of the Rocky Mountain News the following day.This year we anticipate an even larger turnout.

We will be starting at Grant-Frontier Park located at Evans and South Platte Dr. Registration starts at 9:00 am and we will start the cleanup at 11:00
am. There will be a free BBQ at the take out, City of Cuernavaca Park,
starting at 3:00 and participant raffle starting at 4:00. There is no available
parking at Grant-Frontier Park, but there will be a complimentary shuttle
from City of Cuernavaca Park Downtown, where there is ample parking
(even for trailers). The shuttle will be running from 9:00 to 10:30 am.
