The health fair features a wide range of free wellness and health education sessions and information. Attendees will receive free gifts and an opportunity to win door prizes. In addition, diagnostic evaluations and screenings also will be performed by local medical professionals and physicians. Pianist Donna Stalker will perform in the lobby while the following free break-out sessions are held in the The Atrium Cinema at the designated times:

Mobile Dental Practice; hearing assessments from Anita Avallone of Total Hearing Care; a foot screening performed by Howard Kliman, D.P.M.; hand and foot massages courtesy of The Fountain Spa; chair massage therapy compliments of Jaime Bachrach, C.M.T.; and blood pressure screenings with a nurse from The Allendale Community. Information regarding the senior living campus, which includes an assisted living residence and a skilled nursing/subacute care facility, as well as its Senior Social Club and Respite Programs will also be available.

In addition, Life Line Screening Radiology, LLC will be conducting tests that screen for strokes/carotid artery blockages; heart rhythm irregularities; abdominal aortic aneurysms; and the build-up of plaque, known as peripheral artery disease, in the lower extremities. The painless, non-invasive tests cost $139, with an option to add an osteoporosis test for an additional $10.

I would have to say that my favorite bartender is Alli.

Early one Friday night I slipped into Lenora’s for a much-needed family break. The Mets were on the coast giving me a few hours to waste before first pitch at 10:05. Every seat at the bar was taken and most of the bar tables occupied. With the front room crowded, I took my Bud bottle and wandered into the back room.

I’m no regular at Lenora’s but in the handful of times I’ve been there, I’ve never seen anyone in the backroom. Except me: the first night I ever went to the bar and tonight. Truth is, all I really wanted to do was drink a beer and do some reading (Yes, I’m the type of guy who goes to bars alone and READS!). The backroom was empty with big cushiony chairs that if you think long enough would probably want to put on one of those contamination suits before taking a seat. Exposed to the elements, I plopped down, pulled from my beer and cracked open Augusten Burrough’s ‘Dry.’

Being a memoir about an alcoholic, ‘Dry’ isn’t exactly perfect bar reading. From my experience, I’ve always felt that travel stories with their tales of crazy overseas bars and customs make for the best books to read in bars. All one has to do is read the opening pages to Chuck Anderson’s ‘Smile When You’re Lying: Confessions of a Rouge Travel Writer’ to know what I’m talking about.

As a music lover, I can’t tell you how I actually spend more than five minutes in Lenora’s without ripping what’s left of my hair out. I must resist the temptation to take out my iPod so I can finally hear some bass. The playlist at Lenora’s settles firmly in the space between metal/hair band/rock music. It’s a place where you hear Iron Maiden and Dokken. If you’ve answered the question ‘what type of music do you like?’ by saying anything but heavy metal, Lenora’s music will drive you mad.

Going back to why Alli is my favorite bartender. A few nights later, after I had put ‘Dry’ to bed, I opted to start reading ‘A Prayer for Owen Meany’ a highly recommended book by John Irving. I had only read one Irving book before: ‘The World According to Garp’ which was let on the ledge of the window in the lobby of my old apartment in Hell’s Kitchen. This ledge was a refuge for unwanted items that tenants opted not to throw out. Old magazines, books, CD’s and even a few clothing items found their way to the ledge. I was even guilty of leaving a few stray Maxim’s and Esquire’s on that ledge. The Esquire’s were never touched but the Maxim’s were always snatched up, I suppose by the guys on the 4th floor or the sexually adventurous woman on 2.

So, there I was one early evening, at the bar reading ‘Owen Meany’ when Alli came over to me. She was dressed in a sun dress and wearing the official footwear of summer: the dreaded flip-flop. Why would anyone want to wear flip-flops behind a bar is beyond me, but Alli doesn’t fret over drinks spilled over her pedicured toes.

Now, I don’t like to stereotype people but I must say that I was surprised when Alli – after handing me my Bud bottle, said: “I love that book. I read it in school.” With her young looks it’s hard to know if Alli meant college or high school. Not one to talk much these days, I never asked for clarification. Plus, I like the mystery of not knowing much about Alli.

‘A Prayer for Owen Meany’ is quite the lengthy book with a few surprises I assume along the way. Like who really is Owen Meany and what is his special role in life. Alli tried her best not to ruin the surprises that are coming up the pipe but did let out a “did you get to the part when..” before AC/DC’s ‘For Those About to Rock’ loudly blasted over the speakers, drowning her out.

While everyone else in the bar was looking at me rather weird for reading in a crowded bar, With the looks the guys playing pool, gave me, you would’ve thought I was wearing a dress and not reading a book. However, Alli did her job perfectly. She was pleasant, not overly talkative and made me feel very welcomed even though I wasn’t ordering shots or playing air guitar with the poll cues.

I’ve said a few kind things about Lenora’s in this space, let’s add friendly and well-read bartenders to the list.

The Club has always offered a variety of reading programs and activities for the members enrolled in its summer camp. However, it can be a difficult and daunting task to engage teens in extracurricular reading activities, but the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield has created two entertaining activities to get teens excited about reading. As part of a Boys & Girls Clubs of America national partnership with the Walmart Foundation, the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield was able to increase the number and variety of reading programs it offered this summer through generous grants through Walmart Foundation’s Brightspot for Reading Initiative.

Walmart Foundation’s generous support has helped the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield create a space dedicated as a Bright Spot for Reading center – a reading-rich environment dedicated to providing programming to encourage adolescents to read more and develop a more positive attitude toward reading. Through the Club, use of technology and modern media has aimed to instill in youth a desire to become life-long learners.

As part of the Bright Spot for Reading initiative, the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield hosts a weekly foreign film night on Wednesdays for teens. Action, drama, comedy or suspense; Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, French or Polish – the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield screens movies that can allow children to look beyond their own borders to see the world through the eyes of international filmmakers – dubbed movies are not allowed. Films viewed this summer include Ip Man (Chinese), Pan’s Labyrinth (Spanish), and The Protector (Thai) ranging the entire film-making spectrum. “Movies are visual mediums but by using foreign films the children are encouraged to look beyond the simple pictures and concentrate on the dialogue and conversations within the movies. By encouraging them to look at the subtitles they are learning and broadening their horizons….after all without foreign films like the Hidden Fortress; George Lucas could not have found the inspiration to make Star Wars,” said program coordinator Nicole Mendoza. The activities will continue into the school year. All teens are welcomed to join each week, and movie suggestions are both encouraged and welcomed.

A large-scale, multi-faceted and multi-tiered pool and outdoor living project built by Stonetown Construction Corporation (http://www.stonetownconstruction.com) on Greenwood Lake in New Jersey, was featured as one of the top ten pools in the world by AOL’s ShelterPop Web site. ShelterPop is the internet provider’s online destination for home design and décor inspiration and ideas.

The pool area and the surrounding hardscape, all constructed by Stonetown, based in Oakland, New Jersey, were included in the article “Design Drool: World’s Prettiest Pools” (http://www.shelterpop.com/2010/07/13/best-pools-in-the-world/) and was listed among other spectacular pool projects from across the United States and around the world. The Greenwood Lake project is one of the largest that Stonetown Construction has built in the 25 years since the company was founded by President Bob LaNeve.

“The scope of this swimming pool project was an exciting challenge for us,” said LaNeve. “Our crew worked closely with the pool contractor Marson Pools, who designed the pool and waterfall, to ensure every step of the construction was executed to plan and with respect for the beautiful natural surroundings.” La Neve added that Stonetown’s professionals built retaining walls that border three levels of outdoor living space, several patios, the outdoor kitchen, the lakeside walkway and fire pit. “Our masons are specially trained in the Old World, hand-tooled stone cutting method, so our customers get something truly unique and organic to the surroundings with every project,” noted LaNeve.

The Greenwood Lake project encompasses an infinity swimming pool built on a hillside that overlooks the water and appears to empty directly into the lake; a pergola with hidden electric doors that come down on all sides to shield swimmers from inclement weather; an integrated stone whirlpool tub; and elegant water features that coordinate with the surrounding landscape.

Hand-cut stone steps leading to the lower levels of the installation bring visitors to a gleaming upscale outdoor kitchen outfitted with built-in flat screen TV and stainless steel appliances and amenities. Diners can enjoy the soothing sound of the adjacent waterfall that is formed from the water flowing over the pool’s edge to be recirculated into the pool.

The lakeside walkway, also constructed of hand-hewn stone, connects a boat dock with an outdoor seating area centered around a custom-built stone fire pit. “The homeowner spared no expense in creating a one-of-a-kind outdoor entertainment retreat,” said LaNeve. “We were honored to be part of this amazing project.”

Stonetown Construction Corporation is an award-winning hardscape firm whose projects throughout northern New Jersey and New York have been featured in prominent lifestyle magazines for their design and originality.
